What a terribly disappointing video game. Join me as a breakdown why it sucks, and why maybe it kinda doesn't suck. Stay tuned for more content on this channel!
@ihavenothoughts well with mods the game becomes amazing since I got a realism mod that adds the mechanics from the older mafia games into Mafia 3 so police actually react to you breaking traffic laws and they don't shoot you unless you have a gun or you start shooting. Plus they do arrest you technically speaking but they knock you over and knock your ass out when they try to arrest you which is an instant kill to you. Plus now gang members walk the streets instead of I'm their hideouts and they all use different weapons now like AKs, M16s, silenced 1911s, Auto shotguns, they use everything against you. The mods for Mafia 3 make it ten times better
Mafia III made the mistake of being an easily digestible free roam game in a game series that was not an easily digestible free roam game series. It’s mediocre on its own, and horrible compared to Mafia 1 and Mafia 2
Man, I thought Mafia 3 would play out in the same formula as the first two games the first time I played it. It was just so repetitive with what you had to do to progress the story. The setting of the game was nice and all. But other than that, it was just so disappointing.
I’m playing it again right now on PC, I forgot how so many missions have touched drive all the way across the map to get in a truck or a boat then drive it all the way back across
Donovan isn't a psychopath, he is just used to dehumanizing and killing people as a war veteran, much like Lincoln. And they were both killing criminals and mercenaries, not civilians. As mentioned, he is carefree, derisive, and cynical. What was he supposed to do in the bar, for instance? Some guy was killed, no need to cry about it, or avoid taking his cigar. Overall, I don't think he was doing awful things and laughing it off (that would imply he was coping with unpleasant experiences through laughter). What made him dislikeable is the final scene in the church, where he was immature and extremely rude to father James, and desecrated the temple.
Idk why but I enjoyed the missions and how simple they were so I didn’t mind that there were a ton of them I actually enjoyed grinding all the side missions. Try to stealth as much as I could then just go gorilla with the shotty on whoever was left . The setting did help bc New Orleans is my favorite city and maybe bc I was stoned outta my mind I just loved this game. That being said, I didn’t like Mafia 1 and never played 2 so do with that what you will

The Glitches even in 2024 make this game unplayable. Yes, LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE. I encountered a glitch where I was upgrading Sammy's Bar and the game cut to black. (supposedly because it was trying to start a mission but failed) I was stuck in an infinite black loading screen and so I quit the game and it spawned me back in, but every time it spawned me in I would fall under the map and would be unable to move. It practically broke the game where I lost all my progress permanently. Also, every so often the game would freeze for a few seconds and then resume.
I thought the game freezing for a few seconds was a fault of my console, or perhaps the disc was scrached (I bought the game used), interesting to see others bump into this same issue...

Everything about this video is fantastic, I haven't laughed like that in a long time! And it's all true too. Like the melee combat, it's a huge letdown from Mafia ll. You can no longer duck or slip punches, what kind of a fight is that? And the radio stations, there isn't a one bita difference between them like in Mafia ll, expect for the name. What's the point of having 3 stations if they all play exactly the same set of songs? A few times they played say Fortunate Son on all 3 stations concurrently. I hear the familiar guitar intro (after hearing it about half a million times in other games I can stand it no more 😖I switch but there's no escape so I'm forced to turn the radio completely off. And no garage, seriously? After 15 year old GTA lll, Vice City and San Andreas, a major open world driving AAA game doesn't have at least ONE garage? Unbelievable

There's rumors it'll be taking place in Sicily before Mussolini rose to power. My guess is that it'll end with the main character either leaving or staying in Sicily after Mussolini comes to power
The personality thing with Lincoln is debatable because there is a section where you see his journal entries throughout the story and he comments on everything but I can see where your coming from
That's kind of lazy, though. Instead of him expressing himself like a human, just read his diary. The entries don't say much anyway, it's essentially him recounting the events or sentiments we were already aware of "Burke is a drunk lunatic", "Dixie pimps are mfs who deserve to die", etc.
Kinda, it's a bit sparser than the RDR2 journal but he comments on everything like even health upgrades he mentions Vito sending him to a named mob doc that checks him up but doesn't really describe what the doc does to increase his health.
I disagree. It is way too repetitive. That is for sure and ruins most of the game IMO. The story though is really really good and very satisfying to see through to the end. The characters are also awesome (especially Donovan). The gameplay isn't perfect but frankly I think the basic shooting combat is better than the rest of the series (including Mafia 1 remake). Maybe that's down to the guns being more modern but it also just feels more responsive to me than the rest. What does not get enough credit though is the driving. As a fan of simulation racing games, this has the best driving I have experienced outside of actual racing games. Especially when you get the faster cars in the game, IT IS SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cars actually behave relatively realistically compared to most open world games like this. Hell, I've played many actual racing games that didn't have driving nearly as good as Mafia 3's
8:36 I had this bug, Im pretty sure I deleted the game data or game itself and it fixed it. That or I had an older save in the cloud and I restarted from that point. Its hard to tell, but whenever you have these issues, trying to delete the game profile or game data (NOT save data) or the entire downloaded game on system can help. It can set you back hours, but way better than having to do a replay which most end up doing not knowing how to deal with a corrupted game
mafia 1-2 were my favorite because i felt like those characters were violent but not super crazy, right off the bat in m3 the main character is portrayed to be an incredibly violent guy it’s hard to start to like someone or feel bad that they have to live this lifestyle when that’s the introduction. at least be an innocent cab driver, or someone trying to pay they’re mothers debts back. yes he’s protecting his family etc etc, but we don’t learn enough about that until we’ve already done extremely violent things and at that point my impression has been made but maybe this is a hot take 😂😂
idk man i just played Mafia 2 for like the 10th time and every mission is driving somewhere, watching a cutscene, shooting people, hold one button, and driving somewhere else with another cutscene. all mafia games are like this. The story of 3 is great imo. and you can’t shit on dlcs as a main point cuz remember Jimmy’s Vendetta? or even joes dlc. both were weird and timed for some reason. Mafia 3 literally feels like a mafia game, that’s what makes these games so greT
I really enjoyed this game. Not the best in the series, as that belongs to the first game, but it’s a second for sure. Mafia 2 was fine but the gameplay brought it down for me; story wise though, I liked it. Vito & Joe were really good characters. As for Mafia 3’s gameplay, repetitive asf and that’s what brought it down. But I still really enjoyed the climaxes for each, so it felt worth it to me, but yes, it was very repetitive and bland as you said haha they coulda done way more
one of the strifes i had with the story, was to an extent with the Documentary style, i loved it, but i hated how the outcome of a mission was always pretty much sealed/spoiled with the whole "trial" thing going on with Donovan. Would've been nice if they kept the details scarce to give the player that layer of uncertainty. I also felt that we should've been able to have more stuff to do with our criminal organization, afterall we're building it up, why not be able to customize certain things etc..
The drop in quality compared to the first 2 games was jarring to say the least. My initial thought was that they must have had a much lower budget for this game but I couldn’t find source on this. The studio shift must have played a huge factor though. Compared to the first two this game was clearly not crafted with love and care. Shame this franchise had such a strong identity and it complements GTA and Red Dead really well in the crime sim genre. I hope Hangar 13 gets the resources to make Mafia 4 with production value on par with 2.
This game has always been a guilty pleasure for me. The idea of an ultraviolent open world power fantasy set during the civil rights era South will never stop being hilarious. That said, I play this in doses. The side content and other crap just gets far too tedious at times. Cheap deaths happen way too often on higher difficulties.
Too bad their are no shops. I think there should’ve been a features like us being able to eat at certain restaurants to regain health or buy clothes like you mentioned. This makes it a bigger deal when you cannot eat (or shop in this case) at certain places due to your race.
That hypothetical old country mission was fucking great and i 1000 percent would play that mission call it somthing like "Old Counrty for Mob Men" perfect
28:00 OK, I agree with you on the whole "lincoln being too much of a badass" thing, badass characters don't really work in games like mafia. HOWEVER, a badass main character in a game CAN work, It IS possible for a main character in a game to BE a badass, just not in EVERY game, cause that would get boring afterwards.
Lincoln made this game seem like Assassin's Creed, among many other things. Meanwhile, the previous ones were about soldiers trying to achieve something in life.
I liked the lethal and nonlethal option you could have. Liked he was a big mfer and it showed by his gameplay. Dude was a powerhouse, his combat boots stomping audio was on point.
Great video, All of problems and good things with Mafia 3 was addressed perfectly. I played it 5 times and never finished it because i would lose interest. 34:35 My only problem was this statement. Calling open-world crime games 'Gta clones' or 'Gta Rip-offs' is what has killed the genre and gave Rockstar a monopoly which they have neglected for 10 years. For more details on why 'GTA clones' is a bad term i recommend Flippy's ''Ranting about "Grand Theft Auto Clones"
id die for a red dead in the 40's-60's with mafia tied in with an open world! My dream game that will never happen sadly. Mostly because i'd see take-two being like NAH we already have a mafia series so it would be redundant.
Maybe the hardcopy helped bugs, but on the og xbox and on release i didnt have any issues with graphics, dips, or glitches, and still dont. Just thought that was interesting, but that looked horrible if that was the digital copy
I liked Mafia 3 but I wish it had a similar structure to Far Cry 5. Less lieutenants to get through before the big bad, and having almost everything you do, from open world shenanigans to side missions, actually progressing each region towards a particular target instead of just specific quests that often have you do very similar objectives. There was too much of the grind in Mafia 3 that wouldn't be so bad if it didn't have the technical state that it does. But I like its characters and its story. And the twist on the formula of being a Mafia game about taking revenge on the mafia after two games of playing as part of the organization was something I appreciated, despite a bit of bloat that robbed some of minor characters of being fleshed out. And yeah, Joe showing up at the end is dumb kinda takes away from the impact of Mafia 2's ending AND Vito's side quest in 3.
The first 2 games were master piece, and this game made me almost say "goodbye" to the franchise, repetetive shit game, bugs, and bad gameplay, there were similliar games like rdr 2,who made it "not" repetetive and good, dissapointment
I bought it for $10 or whatever the psn sale. I'll say this game is fun if you play it for what it is. It is repetitive I admit every mission is a shootout but it's kinda fun especially the stealth kills. But if you want an open world game with plenty of activities you won't like this game. To enjoy Mafia 3 just go from mission to mission no free roam.
The game on console looks terrible because they ruined the reflections and the anti aliasing so everything’s just blurry and desaturated and that’s on the series s
I like the idea of Mafia 3. 1960s New Orleans, and the protagonist, a black Vietnam veteran. The execution is where it fell short. I do find myself going back from time to time just to drive around and listen to music, but everything else is too repetitive. Having a great city like New Orleans and having nothing to do in it is pretty disappointing.
The actual story was great let down by the repetitive gameplay in every sense and the dlc was how the whole game should have been and clearly they understood that with the mafia 1 remake and hopefully 4 will use that as the model
Mafia 2 just might be my most favorite game of all time. The pain I felt lying to myself that Mafia 3 was good was unreal at Mafia 3s release. Its a game I'd prefer be forgotten, it kinda ruins the franchise in my opinion
Well…that was the point. You’re one man who has to take down an entire criminal organization to take out someone you have to exact revenge on. I think it was still repetitive, but the act of destroying a massive criminal organization with multiple layers is a repetitive gig to take up in many ways. Respect the view point, though.
I enjoyed mafia 3, least favorite but I can still enjoy it. The thing I can enjoy the most in mafia 3 is the 60s driving Louisiana driving setting, although I prefer the mafia 2 driving style
Mafia 3 had an excellent story but the gameplay was just awful. The missions were painfully repetitive and, while the gunplay was fun, I just got really bored. I made it through it but I was so disappointed. If it wasn't for that soundtrack...
I think they’ll all great games, mafia 3s gameplay was sick, but the story was good but just didn’t flow properly seemed a little rushed, and obviously the missions were all similar and you did a lot of the same stuff throughout the game which took away the cinematic feel mafia 1/2 had if ygm
It’s surprising they nerfed the cops if that’s how the other games were. These should be the hardest cops to take place in a video game consedering the context of mafia 3, the cops should be a huge theme, so imagine all of those laws from the first 2 games, plus possibly getting arrested just by looking at a cop funny for racial reasons I cannot get into without YT deleting my comment for no-no words. I mean this does happen with restaurants, but eh, you have nearly no reason to go to them in the first place.
Oh boy, wait till you go down the rabbit hole of all the stuff that was cut from Mafia 2. 2K released an unfinished game, repackaging it as a linear-story driver one rather than a open world game and people simply choose to believe it. Especially given how those 3 DLCs are just obvious stripped side-missions stuffed together, with little plot or idea behind them.
@@MadWatcher Is it though? Half of the stuff in the game serves no purpose, and it's called linear only due to the fact that the sandbox approach got botched. Mafia 3 however gets bashed for each region take-over being copy paste. Storywise is mafia 2 better, of course, but gameplay lacks.
Mafia 3s gameplay is easily one of the worst out from super repetitive missions to unnecessary objectives and really bad glitches and bugs(seriously I used to wanna punch my tv every time a random NPC would jump into the street when I’m just turning right at an intersection) But yet this is still one of my all-time favorite games because all of the characters are super enjoyable, the writing is some of the best in the business. The actual kills are very satisfying and the story is a masterpiece and is probably my favorite out of the three.
The glitches are the worst part of this game. I’ve owned it for years, and couldn’t ever complete it since the game would not progress due to glitches. Years later, all this hype that they are doing for the definitive edition, and NOTHING has changed, it still crashes, freezes, blacks out, and pedestrians are still trying to commit insurance frad. I’m Grateful for the free dlc but what’s the point if your game still barely runs?
I love this game. Especially when you just want to fuck shit up without thinking. But I respect everything you said. But I still loved every moment of it. Thank you for giving me a reason to replay it
I loved mafia 3 lol I didn’t have that many bugs in my playthrough. Don’t get me wrong it’s my least favorite one of the three but I still loved it. Also the punisher is my favorite character of all time so to say I am a fan is an understatement. This is the closest thing we will get to a punisher game.
For me I liked Mafia 3 but it wasn’t as good as the two Mafia games that came for it, for me I liked the story, Lincoln Clay and the other characters, the city, the music/soundtrack and the gameplay, but the game is very glitchy, I didn’t get the ownership bonuses in the DE version, the a graphics should’ve looked better and the missions are very repetitive but at the end of the day, I enjoyed this game despite its faults, I played it on Xbox One btw. 👍🏻

I definitely DO NOT want to get into an argument with Hugo Stiglitz.
@@ihavenothoughts lol
lol
One of those things where if the game was called something else, it would have had a better reception
at 25:14 .... that point you make about videogame characters is soo true man! You deserve a sub mate!
Indeed man!
I had more of a problem with the glitches.I had a mission that every time you finished it,it would basically restart and have you do it again lol.
32:48 Far Cry 5 had a decent radio soundtrack.
mafia 1-2 were my favorite because i felt like those characters were violent but not super crazy, right off the bat in m3 the main character is portrayed to be an incredibly violent guy it’s hard to start to like someone or feel bad that they have to live this lifestyle when that’s the introduction. at least be an innocent cab driver, or someone trying to pay they’re mothers debts back. yes he’s protecting his family etc etc, but we don’t learn enough about that until we’ve already done extremely violent things and at that point my impression has been made but maybe this is a hot take 😂😂
The best part of Mafia 2 was eating Gyro at the restaurant
Mafia 3 should've been about the Gotti era.
idk man i just played Mafia 2 for like the 10th time and every mission is driving somewhere, watching a cutscene, shooting people, hold one button, and driving somewhere else with another cutscene. all mafia games are like this. The story of 3 is great imo.
and you can’t shit on dlcs as a main point cuz remember Jimmy’s Vendetta? or even joes dlc. both were weird and timed for some reason.
Mafia 3 literally feels like a mafia game, that’s what makes these games so greT
When you encounter the camera bug you could reload last checkpoint instead of closing the whole game
Underrated video 2 years later. Love it man
And then there's GTA where it's done this exact thing for the online crap but barely anyone addresses
True
Yeah for the online, not the main single player story where it matters...
I take Mafia 3 anytime then GTA 5
I really enjoyed this game. Not the best in the series, as that belongs to the first game, but it’s a second for sure. Mafia 2 was fine but the gameplay brought it down for me; story wise though, I liked it. Vito & Joe were really good characters. As for Mafia 3’s gameplay, repetitive asf and that’s what brought it down. But I still really enjoyed the climaxes for each, so it felt worth it to me, but yes, it was very repetitive and bland as you said haha they coulda done way more
The game is improved dramatically if you modify out the racket damage missions. Shortened, too.
I really liked the video !
I wonder why you stopped making more, I think you're really good at this !
I mean, look at his numbers. I don't blame him if he stops because of it. Hopefully, I am wrong.
After playing it for some hours, i haven't been able to play more than two missions in a row and then putting the game down for some weeks
I’m sorry buddy, try mafia 2 if you haven’t yet
@@ihavenothoughts I did love the first two!
one of the strifes i had with the story, was to an extent with the Documentary style, i loved it, but i hated how the outcome of a mission was always pretty much sealed/spoiled with the whole "trial" thing going on with Donovan. Would've been nice if they kept the details scarce to give the player that layer of uncertainty. I also felt that we should've been able to have more stuff to do with our criminal organization, afterall we're building it up, why not be able to customize certain things etc..
10:44 the music makes this funnier
The drop in quality compared to the first 2 games was jarring to say the least. My initial thought was that they must have had a much lower budget for this game but I couldn’t find source on this. The studio shift must have played a huge factor though. Compared to the first two this game was clearly not crafted with love and care. Shame this franchise had such a strong identity and it complements GTA and Red Dead really well in the crime sim genre. I hope Hangar 13 gets the resources to make Mafia 4 with production value on par with 2.
this is such a high production quality review I was shocked that the 'K' in your subscription count wasn't an M!!
Thanks dog! Just hit the K a couple days ago!
Great review honesty, hope you make more
Thanks dog, I’m working on something rn
That hypothetical old country mission was fucking great and i 1000 percent would play that mission call it somthing like "Old Counrty for Mob Men" perfect
28:00 OK, I agree with you on the whole "lincoln being too much of a badass" thing, badass characters don't really work in games like mafia. HOWEVER, a badass main character in a game CAN work, It IS possible for a main character in a game to BE a badass, just not in EVERY game, cause that would get boring afterwards.
Yeah, most of my favorite games have a mega badass lead character, but I prefer something different for the mafia series
20:25 in files there is litterary dialog where they were supposed to choke joe, thats just for people who are saying he should have survived
Does this mean that I was right or that I was wrong?
You were right@@ihavenothoughts
sick
@@ihavenothoughts joe was supposed to get choked than vito would have deep monolog and than epilog chapter would start
@EasterMafian pretty cool, I never knew that
How the hell you have low numbers of views and subscribers. This is insane!!!
Very original video, repeating the same opinions that nearly everyone had almost a decade ago when this game came out. Very enlightening
The first 2 games were master piece, and this game made me almost say "goodbye" to the franchise, repetetive shit game, bugs, and bad gameplay, there were similliar games like rdr 2,who made it "not" repetetive and good, dissapointment
One thing I will say about mafia 3 is they made a pretty decent stealth game
I'm surprised you don't have more subscribers. This video was very well done. You earned yourself a subscriber!
I was shocked, too! I was like damn great video. Let me see his past works, and I only saw 3 videos and low subscribers. I was like damn how!
I still enjoyed the game despite the problems.
Really enjoyed the Faster Baby and Sign of the Times DLC too.
Rebuilding Sammy's was cool.
I bought the full season pass version of this game and got like 6 hours through the campaign and decided nah. The radio was dope though.
Mafia 3 was really good to me in terms of story but lacked in the gameplay department. I’m hoping mafia 4 expands what 3 was doing!
Question: Would Mafia 3's premise have gone down better as a spin-off title in the Mafia universe?
Yes, but also, I think the premise was fine, execution was a total fumble.
@ihavenothoughts1000 Yeah, that's fair.
After reading some of the comments I feel like the only guy who thought Mafia 2 was the worst in the series lmao.
The only thing mafia 3 will be rembered for is that kid that shit himself while streaming himself doing nothing important in the game.
I must admit I THINK I am noticing a theme here
10:47 BRUH IDK WHY THEY DO THAT. I literally get cops on me because of this. I bet the Devs did this on purpose and its still not fixed to this day.
It’s worth it for the lols
i loved get called a racial slur every few minutes
It started out amazing but the game became one of the most repetitive games I’ve ever played , never picked it up after the first playthrough
This video is so funny 😂 and the roast is epic!
Ayyy
I got it and didn’t understand how to play the story so I just did the dlc missions for better weapons
Well…that was the point. You’re one man who has to take down an entire criminal organization to take out someone you have to exact revenge on. I think it was still repetitive, but the act of destroying a massive criminal organization with multiple layers is a repetitive gig to take up in many ways. Respect the view point, though.
I feel that, just doesn’t line up with what I liked about the first 2 games
33:47 i laughed out loud and “and then go play the boring video game” just earned a new sub
I enjoyed mafia 3, least favorite but I can still enjoy it. The thing I can enjoy the most in mafia 3 is the 60s driving Louisiana driving setting, although I prefer the mafia 2 driving style
Definitely the best part of the game
I know it s boring for a game but i see organizations fighting between them most of the time that s how they fight ( go and just sh .....)😂😂😂
Especially given how those 3 DLCs are just obvious stripped side-missions stuffed together, with little plot or idea behind them.
and somehow it's better than Mafia 3, how does an unfinished game be better than a finished game is beyond me lol
The cutscene movie on yt is kinda dope
You should get back into youtube.
I can actually look passed a lot of these issues. But the game bugging out to the point where it's unplayable is where I draw the line.
Never seen a bug in 4 years - played the game more then 10 times.
Im at the halfway point and haven’t had any glitches apart from a loading screen taking forever and making me get out of the game.
It really shows how much I detest this game. I finished both Mafia and Mafia 2’s story and never finished Mafia 3’s
I love this game. Especially when you just want to fuck shit up without thinking. But I respect everything you said. But I still loved every moment of it. Thank you for giving me a reason to replay it
Mafia 3 -kinda- sucks...
Thanx for the upload 👍👍👍
I didn’t hate the game, it was just boring and repetitive. Hope county radio in Far Cry 5 was actually good.
Derazio looks like my math teacher lol
he looks like Jack Packard
Fair enough, nice to see all the love for it in these comments
@@ihavenothoughts that’s ok. 👍🏻
I just could not get past the first bit after the end of act 1, it was so incredibly boring to me and i gave up pretty quickly.
