I first discovered this franchise through the definitive edition and fell in love with the series. The remake of Mafia 1 being one of my most favourite games ever! Thank you for this video, giving a background story that I haven't seen anywhere else. The depth and informative nature made for good viewing. Thanks again. Let's hope that a fourth game is on the horizon and that it is made learning from the mistakes and successes of the previous three iterations of this wonderful game series.
I remember going to my father's workplace to try and download a 9mb video trailer of Mafia, so that I can watch it. Took about 2 hours. It was an experience for the whole afternoon. Mafia was a game changer. Literally. I rode my bike 30km to get the pirated CD.
I went into comments for the debate but i forgot to give u BIG UP !! U realyy made a great video !! I was hooked from the start to the end. Thanks man.
Mafia 3 was Hanger 13’s first game so they had a lot to prove, while also not fully aware of what makes the Mafia series so special. With the Mafia remake I do think they finally realized what makes a good Mafia game.
Mafia 3 started out technically pretty uncooked for sure.. And still misses the details that were in the previous entries (especially Mafia 2) but the core story was pretty engaging minus the grind and it was interesting to see a developer not afraid to look into and display a story most companies would never consider touching today. And for a first game created, it's quite a bit better than many other studios would ever be able to create. The series can really only go up from where it's at currently and that's good with me.
Mafia 4 should be set in the 70s and 80s and maybe, we could have a version of Las Vegas exist in the game since it was a playground for the Mafia back in the day
The original Mafia 2 was my favorite, I had 600 hours played on my steam account because my sister and I would play the campain over and over. Its immersive plot, and dramatic, action packed scenarios really set the bar extremely high for a mafia game.
This is a type of content that you'd only be able to get on TH-cam. If this were on cable back in the day. It would've been on G4TV and only for 30 min. Thank you.
Haven't seen the video yet, but I need to share that Mafia 3 is one of my favourite games ever. Yes, it is really repetetive, but since I like the game mechanics, I didn't mind too much. The story and atmosphere are just great to me. Cruising around the world while listening to the sweet 6os jams, is just so much fun.
Mafia 2 is one of the last game that i have experience during my childhood. It was all thanks to the demo. Without the demo, i would have forgotten about this game or play very late.
Mafia Definitive Edition is a great remake in my opinion. Let's hope us modders can restore the cut features like public transport. (which I'm working on)
The wanted level/cop system in Mafia was always amazing to me. Even now, it's still far better and much more realistic than Grand Theft Auto 5. Where a dead cop, even with no witnesses, results in an immediate swarm of police with instant and perfect autoaim who all know exactly where you are on the map. Such an annoying shortcoming for an otherwise incredible game.
Maybe I missed it but was there no mention of the incredible Mafia 2 soundtrack? I’m not just talking about the score, but the radio stations opened me up to a whole new generation of music, and I’ve been in love with doo wop music since I played it!
Also, I’d really like to know where the devs sourced the song “Maybe” by The Chantels, as the sound is so crisp and clear in the game, but all versions of the song I’ve managed to find sound very unclean and almost unlistenable past a certain volume. I have an mp3 of the Mafia 2 radio version but would love to know where I can buy it officially.
I like how the original Mafia separated the side stuff from the story stuff, much like the original Driver did. So they don't get in the way of each other.
Original mafia is still my favorite the story was spot on and the feel and tone of the game brought it all together. Liked #2 but it definitely felt more arcade like loosing the original feel and tone of the first game. Never played the 3rd game as of bad reviews.
I am really happy with your content good sir, I could eat, drink, relax and just watch your content and learn. Thank you very much for your hard work, Nick.
The first game's racing mission is quite manageable once you realise that you need to respect the car's mechanics and handling, not always having pedal to the metal and actually taking time to break before a sharp (or not so sharp) turn makes a big difference in the experience.
This was a great documentary I wondering can you do a documentary on the syphon filter games from Sony, I always felt they were some of the best espionage spy games to ever come out .
Mafia Definitive Edition is a beautiful game. The time the intro rolls in I was really hooked to the screen. The acting in this game is amazing in my opinion.👍 It's a perfect example of how a Remake should be done. One peculiar detail though - if you look closely at the faces of Tommy's friends, they seem to look like Tommy with just a little but of facial tweaks.😅
I was always fascinated by the fact that the first major game about one of the great American stories came from Europe, from the Czech Republic of all places. This shows the true creative power of the medium and that talent can be found everywhere.
Mafia: Masterpiece (with Dan Vávra involved) Mafia 2: Respectable sequel, but nothing so special (Dan Vávra leaving the project in the middle of development) Mafia 3: Just rubbish (Dan Vávra not involved, establishing his own studio instead) Kingdom Come Deliverance: Masterpiece (with Dan Vávra at the forefront of development again) There is the problem. This man was a hidden gem for a long time and im so happy, that he is free to reshape his dreams into great videogames. I had even pleasure to swap a few sentences with him during my visit at Warhorse HQ in Prague during the facial scan of mine. As a historian and videogames lover i can say, that KCD is the best historically accurate videogame i have ever seen. Really looking forward for the sequel, hoping for hussite wars, very interesting part of czech history, that many people from abroad dont know.
If I could only play 4 games for the rest of my life, it would be these four. These games helped me through the hardest moments of my life, and will always have a spot in my heart. They may not be the best games ever made, but they are my favorite.

@Wulf if Haden would made the same concept everyone would still say the same "dOsEnT fEEl LiKE mAfIA". At least in mafia 3 i get to become the mafia boss of the city with time
I really hope the recent Mafia Definitive Edition sold well enough to warrant a future 4th entry, I'd love a Mafia game set in the 70s or 80s following the events of the 3rd game and tackling new themes, and maybe have some old characters show up in a supporting role like Vito did in Mafia 3.
It would be nice to have a 4th game
What a beautifully well executed documentary! I salute you for making such a high quality video for TH-cam.
Great video - love this series
(I actually really enjoyed Mafia 3)..
There is just something about this franchise that I can't really put into words but it makes me respect this series soo much
I knew this video was gonna be good.. but not that good! :D
Can't imagine the amount of time and research you've done to tell these backstories
Keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Videos like these should be treasured, so that future generations 20yrs from now can gain knowledge about how things worked before.
Nice to see someone shining a light on quote OUR THING
I enjoy these videos even though I know a ton about the game and the development, the pacing and almost documentary-esque structure of the videos are so compelling and make the information feel fresh.
Dude I’ve been waiting for this since the definitive edition came out
Been waiting for this ever since you announced that you were working on it! Mafia 2 is one of my fav games of all time, i have some great memories from my childhood from it. I would love to see a documentary on the GTA Franchise!
You're in luck! GTA Documentary is being worked on already :)
Cant wait to see it dude!
An hour long my god this is about to be good
One of the best video game TH-cam channel! Keep up the good work Nick.
You really are improving mate! Thank you so much!
I don't know how you do this, but you are the best youtuber i
I know. Your documentaries seem made by the developers of thr games! Thanks for posting this I am a huge fan of the Mafia series and I was looking forward to see you talking about it. Can't wait for the Grand Theft Auto one.
This was a great video. Thank you so much.
I went into comments for the debate but i forgot to give u BIG UP !! U realyy made a great video !! I was hooked from the start to the end. Thanks man.
After the disaster with MAFIA 3, they've regained my trust with MAFIA DE.
Mafia 3 was Hanger 13’s first game so they had a lot to prove, while also not fully aware of what makes the Mafia series so special. With the Mafia remake I do think they finally realized what makes a good Mafia game.
Mafia 3 was not a disaster it’s the best one in the series...!
@@thundermane3289 with bugs that are still presents? With repetitive missions? This game can't be the best.
@@thundermane3289 it may be a good game but definitely not the best dude
Mafia 3 started out technically pretty uncooked for sure.. And still misses the details that were in the previous entries (especially Mafia 2) but the core story was pretty engaging minus the grind and it was interesting to see a developer not afraid to look into and display a story most companies would never consider touching today. And for a first game created, it's quite a bit better than many other studios would ever be able to create. The series can really only go up from where it's at currently and that's good with me.
you are one of the best documentary makers and storytellers of all time; not just in the gaming world
This was really good! The mafia trilogy will always have a special place in my heart, especially Mafia 2! I wish they'll make Mafia 4
Mafia 4 should be set in the 70s and 80s and maybe, we could have a version of Las Vegas exist in the game since it was a playground for the Mafia back in the day
Man the intro was very insightful amigo thank you
The original Mafia 2 was my favorite, I had 600 hours played on my steam account because my sister and I would play the campain over and over. Its immersive plot, and dramatic, action packed scenarios really set the bar extremely high for a mafia game.
me and a friend did the same its a shame mafia 3 wasnt as good
This is a type of content that you'd only be able to get on TH-cam. If this were on cable back in the day. It would've been on G4TV and only for 30 min. Thank you.
I'm not convinced there are any better gaming channels on TH-cam
same
Colourshed production. Also great channel.
I find your voice so chill. I’ve watched several of these multiple times.
Been waiting for this for a long time!! One of the most underrated game series of all time
Please guys, give this video a like! He definitely done his work! Well deserved!
Honestly might be the best video I've seen from you yet - and all your videos are baseline very good! Well done :D
Thank you! Glad you liked it :)
Mafia 2 is one of the last game that i have experience during my childhood. It was all thanks to the demo.
Without the demo, i would have forgotten about this game or play very late.
This makes me so happy that I grew up with Mafia II and explored the franchise to its fullest later on in life
Mafia Definitive Edition is a great remake in my opinion. Let's hope us modders can restore the cut features like public transport. (which I'm working on)
You din't gave up on the project ? I thought it had something to do with the engine
@@talpatv512 I had to cut some features, but it should be doable.
@@Kamzik123 can't wait
Nick930 is the absolute GOAT. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WITH THESE VIDEOS
You are very good at these doc mate. Good work.
The guy puts a lot of effort in these videos, I think he deserves more subscribers
Can't wait for history of grand theft auto
Cheers
My favorite game series.
Thanks for the amazing vid. Keep it going man
Amazing job! I can't believe I get to watch this for free ☺
It's not RPG and in 2002 there were no side quests in games, I miss that old days with classic gameplay with not driving for quests like idiot.
Love these history videos they are so well made and you can tell a lot of love and effort was put into making them
Original mafia is still my favorite the story was spot on and the feel and tone of the game brought it all together. Liked #2 but it definitely felt more arcade like loosing the original feel and tone of the first game. Never played the 3rd game as of bad reviews.
I love how in depth you go on those videos. Thank you.
Mafia deserves the same recognition as Grand Theft Auto.
I am really happy with your content good sir, I could eat, drink, relax and just watch your content and learn. Thank you very much for your hard work, Nick.
Mafia 2 is so god damn legendary that makes me want to kiss this bloody game
never finished it, it was so boring compared to the first
The first game's racing mission is quite manageable once you realise that you need to respect the car's mechanics and handling, not always having pedal to the metal and actually taking time to break before a sharp (or not so sharp) turn makes a big difference in the experience.
This was a great documentary I wondering can you do a documentary on the syphon filter games from Sony, I always felt they were some of the best espionage spy games to ever come out .
It's finally here! Been waiting for this one! it's a long one, so it was worth the wait.
Mafia Definitive Edition is a beautiful game.
The time the intro rolls in I was really hooked to the screen.
The acting in this game is amazing in my opinion.👍
It's a perfect example of how a Remake should be done.
One peculiar detail though - if you look closely at the faces of Tommy's friends, they seem to look like Tommy with just a little but of facial tweaks.😅
nothing beats the original
I was always fascinated by the fact that the first major game about one of the great American stories came from Europe, from the Czech Republic of all places. This shows the true creative power of the medium and that talent can be found everywhere.
Mafia: Masterpiece (with Dan Vávra involved)
Mafia 2: Respectable sequel, but nothing so special (Dan Vávra leaving the project in the middle of development)
Mafia 3: Just rubbish (Dan Vávra not involved, establishing his own studio instead)
Kingdom Come Deliverance: Masterpiece (with Dan Vávra at the forefront of development again)
There is the problem.
Woaahhh Dude !! Was eagerly waiting for this one!!!!! 😍😍😍🤩🤩
This is one of those rare moments on youtube where I click a random video thinking it's most likely going to be terrible but ends up being amazing.
If I could only play 4 games for the rest of my life, it would be these four. These games helped me through the hardest moments of my life, and will always have a spot in my heart. They may not be the best games ever made, but they are my favorite.
The first mafia was the best mafia ever made
1 HOUR LONG YESSS!!! can’t wait to binge this when I get home!!
no wonder he took so long to make these history vids he's going from the scratch of the stone age lol, do a history of need for speed next maybe??
You did a very good job on the History of The Mafia Series video! You are a very talented and amazing person and keep on the good work. I would really like to see The History of Saints Row video, made by you.
Mafia 3 was a low point in the franchise, but Mafia Definitive Edition really recovered my hope on the Studio.
Man I just LOVE your documentaries! Phenomenal work!!!
