I bought the yaris for two reasons. Toyotas huge reputation for reliability, and that its the cheapest entry level toyota. This car is for the modest commuter. Its not flashy, or fast, or cool looking. Is cheap, reliable, and simple.
Seeing this review after 9 years of it being uploaded I got a second car, a Yaris recently 35,000 kms / 20,000 miles - almost 12 year old car, Runs like a champ
I drove a 2010 Yaris for a couple months, and honestly, it wasn’t the worst experience ever. It’s cheap, basic, easy and cheap to maintain, and gets you where you need to go reliably. You buy this when you just want a car. As Jeremy Clarkson would say, it’s 14 feet of car (or however long a Yaris is.) I’ve always liked small cars, they are everything you need and nothing more.
This little Toyota Yaris is really humbling to own. It's very affordable. It will get you almost anywhere while sipping the least amount of gas. And most of all will run for thousands of miles just as long as you change the oil regularly.
the 2010-present Toyota Yaris/ Toyota Vitz is assembled in China: Guangzhou France: Valenciennes Indonesia: Karawang Japan: Kanegasaki, Iwate; Ōbu, Aichi Taiwan: Zhongli Thailand: Chachoengsao
I've got the basic 5-speed manual. I love the simplicity of the car (no stupid gadgets I don't need). It handles very well. Very quiet. Plus excellent reliability, safety, and mileage. I'm very happy with it. Great price, too :)
I drive a 2009 Yaris 5speed base model and it has been good to me. Gets around 34 mpg in the city and hasn't given me a problem yet. All I've had to do is routine maintenance, new tires and a battery. I agree this car is probably better with a 5speed than an automatic, small engines usually are. It's nothing fancy, just something to get to work and back in, and I'm happy with it.
Does anyone know where the microphone is on this thing? Everyone always says they can't hear me, and I'm not sure which direction I should direct my voice.
I would definitely get the manual as well but there are still plenty of 4 speed automatics and only recently has a 5 or 6 speed automatic become common.
Suitable for people who carry blood supplies -- that's classic. You learn to love that 1.5 engine, though. My '05 Scion XB uses the same. It now has 190K miles on it, with very little TLC -- just clean fluids. 84 miles per day, at 75-80mph, still cooking. Changing the oil is the simplest of any car I've had. No ramp, no awkward reaches. If you can live with the "basic transportation" experience, and want to save your cash for important stuff, these are a good deal. "Cheap to keep."
0:55 *shows Toyota specs* Integrated fog lights 16 inch alloys 0:57 umm where they at tho? 😂 pretty sure you got the base bro. Also 4 speed autos were still around still like the mid 2000s. Get your shit together Cooley!!!
AttachedSilver you should probably count the doors between the car he reviewed and the one shown on the spec sheet, also Cooley works with analogies and metaphors a lot but he's very blunt and truthful about his statements. that 4 speed 80s statement was obviously an exaggeration.
so you can put the usb stick/other device in there leave the car come back and not have thief break into your car to steal it. All major after market radio have a back usb port and an adapter so you can wired it into the glove box. Further having your device hanging off the radio get in the way if you have a manual and trying to shift gear.
They're complaining because when you're on the highway, the engine is revving really high which drones into the cabin. Also Every other Subcompact like the Fit, Fiesta, etc all have 5 and 6 speed transmissions and they aren't always gear hunting. And Yes Fuel economy would be better. Case and point, the Manual Yaris. the 5-speed yaris gets 3 MPG better. If the engine is revving lower because of the extra gears, it will get better economy.
Its funny that he slams the Yaris for having a 4 speed auto when it ONLY falls short of the Fiesta Automatic combined MPG, with its needlessly complex 6-speed dual clutch automatic, by only 1 MPG. 32 MPG combined for the Yaris, 33 for the Fiesta. If it really was nearly as terrible as he says it is, the difference should be much much larger. According to Fuely.com they are about the same with their real world averages. Either Toyota got something right or Ford got something wrong.
Umm, the Corolla was designed like 6 years ago. Why do people complain that it only has a 4 speed auto now... ITS A 6 YEAR OLD CAR! I can see if the car was just revealed yesterday, but it wasnt. an all new Corolla is coming this year! And it cant come soon enough so people can shut up about the 4 speed automatic.
I agree that it is overpriced but other than that it's a wonderful little car.I went on vacation recently & rented the Suzuki swift & just fell in love with those little cars BUT I'd only buy it as a second car though & at a discounted price.
@remelsheikh They're not in depth enough, how about the head room, leg room for back seats, how big is the trunk, how the suspension feels etc. And no I don't own a Yaris and i never will, my first car will be a Nissan. When did I ever say I disliked it?
And you made a smart move....Just read a review on 10 cars that wil make 250,000 miles...relatively trouble free. 6 cars were toyota's/scion combined. The yaris was on the list.
I really would like to know why Toyota doesn't bring this car to Brazil? They insist in Etios, but the brazilian market is not like before!!!! They should bring the Yaris. Brazil has Corolla, Camry, Hilux (Tacoma), SW4(4runner) and thats it. But the toyota needs a popular and hath car!!!!!
my lexus has a 4 speed and it is only a 97...wish it had another gear. 2700 RPMs at 80 mph is a little too high. Does have great passing power in 4th gear though.
Kurtis Brabeck I have the 2G GS300 with the 5 speed. My car is at 3500 or so RPMs at 80 MPH, right around 3000 at 70. Then again, the V8 and the I6 have different final gear ratios, but Lexus doesn't leave a lot of overdrive.
I've got a three speed in my Oldsmobile, and let me tell you, its infinitely better than my 6 speed in my Fiesta. Not only is it 2 times smoother, it doesn't have to shift every time I touch the gas. If I want to shift, I press down hard and zoom. In the Fiesta, in almost every situation, I have to wait an extra second before it finds the gear I wants, then I can accelerate. I'll take my 1992 over my 2012 most days. And its only ever needed tires, brakes, and a crankshaft position sensor over its 128000 miles. After 40000 on the Ford, I've had to replace two tierod ends, the instrument cluster (?), the drive by wire system, the interior door handle, the turn signal arm, and the check engine light is always on, the Ford dealership says then can't do anything about it. It can't even start from a stopsign without the transmission jolting and vibrating the whole damn car... So yeah, i'll take my "Soviet" 3 speed any day.
Fiestas don't have real automatic transmissions, they have automated manuals (that's why they are so clunky and not smooth like regular automatics) .....it does not help that it's also a very unreliable transmission
Its basic transportation what did you expect? So long as it get 35 mpg has a working heater and a radio I'd take it. every car I've owned has had manual windows one less thing to break
This guy is like a music critic: he wants to be the center of attention over the thing he's reviewing. It might be okay if he were as witty as he seems to think..
So back to the point, the Corolla is still a 6 year old car and a new redesigned model will be here before years end. We will see just how it stacks up against the "best car in the world"
That's because the show is called CAR TECH.... and the back seat is not tech... nor is the noise insulation.... There are a million Yaris reviews, and you have to whine on this one.
So, because you saw no Corolla with heated seats, it cant exist, right? And, I bet that $22,045 focus wasnt fully loaded. I know it wasnt, because theres no mention of navigation, the rain sensing wipers or the handling package that are available on the Titanium only. We were comparing fully loaded cars with no hypothetical cash on the hood, in case you forgot. I recommend you check out Ford.com and fully equip a Focus Titanium 6Speed Auto.
one thing that disappoints me about toyota: 4 speed automatic? really... my mazda3 has a 6 speed auto and gets great mileage. And how come the corolla gets worse mpg than the camry? makes no sense to me. We had a 2003 corolla with a 4 speed auto and that was fine. But really, in 2012-13 a 4 speed? cmon toyota if you would throw a even a 5 speed preferabley a 6 speed im sure they would get to the 40mpg mark without a problem...
this review told me nothing, except where the aux is. and all cars have soviet 4 spd auto except very new cars might have 5 i drive a 3 speed auto, its pretty good, not soviet at all
I never said it is the best car. I wouldn't even argue that. I however think it is one of the best in the segment right next to the mazda3. However, based on that the corolla is a good car, but half of the options you mentioned arent even available i tried to find one with heated seats and navigation and I couldn't. However, I did enjoy my 2003 corolla and honestly wish i still had it, that being said toyotas today are just so bland and boring especially the interior.. and that archaic 4 speed.
He says "think about it." But if you think about what he is saying, you will realize he is saying nothing. He says "that's a four speed kids." Like four forward gears are something a young person wouldn't understand? lol In his mind, if you don't have a gear for every "finger," you're out of luck. lol And what in the world would the "Soviets" have to do with anything? lol He's just not making much sense. But I still think it was nice of him to do the review. I enjoyed it.
Don't give a damn what anyone says - I LOVE A 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC!!! LMAO that tire part is too funny. "carry the tire around the back like a family heirloom."
You commenters who think you're above driving a car like a Yaris - we're all REALLY impressed!
Seeing this review after 9 years of it being uploaded

I LOVE these reviews. I'm not in the market for one of these, but Brian is just plain funny and entertaining! :)
Awwwww... It's so cute! It just looks cheerful!
I have a 2007 Yaris and it has worked good! A little more hungry for gas now but still strong in the engine and never had a problem with the engine.

THIS IS THE YARIS L............NOT THE SE........THE SE ONLY COMES IN FOUR DOOR AND IT HAS RIMS.........NOT HUBCAPS
Good review as always
Cooley is 6'5". He says this in one of the Fiat / Mini convertible videos.
I had a rental in Costa Rica and it was definitely an $8k car. Came back to my Jetta and it felt like a luxury car in comparison
can i get a in dash GPS for my yaris......i want to have cooler looking tech in the car?
how does the yaris compare to the current corolla
one of the top reliabile cars available today, it beats(all other car makes)
Reason I'm getting one in 2019 that 1.5 engine has been around for nearly 30 years.

exactly my gf has a cavalier with a similar transmission.

How to convert an American yaris temperature from Fahrenheit to Silice

They'll love em in the uk..

It's not Motorweek, it's CNet.

No. The grille is also different. And the Se is only in 5-door. Check the Toyota website again.
Damn, I thought this thing was discontinued a while ago!
Only the 4 door hatchback yaris passed the IIHS (Insurance Institute For Highway Safety) test. The 3 door hatchback has NOT been tested..
"ball of putty that was shoved into a latex glove".. yup hahahahaha
My parents bought a 2013 Toyota Yaris Hybrid for around 120,000 NIS which is about 30,000 USD (and it doesn't have sat nav).
he says that he has the SE model but those have fog lights and they dnt in the video!?
Its funny that he slams the Yaris for having a 4 speed auto when it ONLY falls short of the Fiesta Automatic combined MPG, with its needlessly complex 6-speed dual clutch automatic, by only 1 MPG. 32 MPG combined for the Yaris, 33 for the Fiesta. i watch all of your reviews even though i don't like all of the cars you review
I want the new Yaris SE.
why the ...... put the USB inside the gloves compartment?

oh you are soo welcome. Its all about you...
did he like it, or hate it? strange guy, strange review.
***** "In all, a pleasant little, high-riding, springy, light input transportation...that's why this car sells so well." 4:46
cadsux I missed that. thanks.

I like the Matrix alot more.... bigger while being just as good on gas.
2008 Focus had a 4speed.
2010 Toyota Yaris 4 speed.
And you made a smart move....Just read a review on 10 cars that wil make 250,000 miles...relatively trouble free. 6 cars were toyota's/scion combined. The yaris was on the list.
My 09 F-150 has a 4 speed and I'm 18 years old, so I have seen a 4 speed under the age of 30.
I can't watch this on iPad.
I really would like to know why Toyota doesn't bring this car to Brazil? They insist in Etios, but the brazilian market is not like before!!!! They should bring the Yaris.
Brazil has Corolla, Camry, Hilux (Tacoma), SW4(4runner) and thats it. But the toyota needs a popular and hath car!!!!!
it makes more sense to buy the yaris the the scion IQ. its cheaper, more interior room, and similar gas milage
The iQ is intended to be used in cities where finding parking space is an issue. Two different cars for two different scenarios.
my lexus has a 4 speed and it is only a 97...wish it had another gear. 2700 RPMs at 80 mph is a little too high. Does have great passing power in 4th gear though.
+Kurtis Brabeck What kind of Lexus was it? An LS400?
+Aki Kurose yes. I wish I had bought a 98-00 with the 5 speed, though when I drove it, didn't seem to be much better at cruising speed.
Kurtis Brabeck
I have the 2G GS300 with the 5 speed. My car is at 3500 or so RPMs at 80 MPH, right around 3000 at 70.
Then again, the V8 and the I6 have different final gear ratios, but Lexus doesn't leave a lot of overdrive.
+Kurtis Brabeck wtf, my 2013 BMW 335i is at 3,000 RPM at 80 mph! It's the 6 speed manual
My Mazda had a 5 speed and would get to about 4100 at 80.
The SE has fog lights, this on doesn't.

C'mon Brian. I'm 20 and I know what a 4-Speed Automatic is. My 1992 Honda Accord had one!
Perfect5Recurve Toyota use 4 speed Auto until recently so he is way overeating
Wish I had the 2012; Toyota outlawed the middle dashboard.
Watching old Cooley reviews are much better when they’re shitty cars. The roasts are great.
I agree.

Pretty sure that's not an SE.
Come on Toyota, you need to step it up with the Yaris. A 4 speed auto, seriously? No wonder I see Fiestas and Sonics more on the road than the Yaris.

Well its better looking at least
the ONLY reason i watched this was cause of Brian.

I didn't say that you just lost and you know it... thanks for not being a poor sport.
Don't give a damn what anyone says - I LOVE A 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC!!! It's my favorite type of transmission layout - 6-speed autos like whats in the 2013 Hyundai Elantra or Mazda3 shift around way way WAY too much, or would you rather a 2.0L 2016 Civic coupe that would be perfect with a 4-speed automatic but is instead ruined w/ a CVT.
Thumbs up if ur watching this cause of brian cooley!!
Just so i dont have to see your screenname in my inbox ever again in my life why don't we do this... the Focus is the best car ever in the world, Everyone wants one, Everyone needs one, its better than every compact ever in the world. There. Its over.
in manual, nothing beats the yaris in its class. beats a damn corolla. so yap! take your CVT to your granny
i think he was biased from the get go when he did the video he din't like the yaris

it's just good for a rental car, and that's about it. overpriced for what it is.
