I test drove one of these in early 2014 wanting to like it, and I absolutely hated it. I definitely preferred the Honda Fit and the Hyundai Accent to the Yaris. Maybe it's because I was doing my test driving in a snowstorm, and the Yaris did not feel firmly planted AT ALL. It was sliding and fishtailing all over the place. It was also underpowered, even compared to its direct competitors in the subcompact segment. But, for just a little more than the Accent, I ended up with the even better Hyundai Elantra GT.
Agreed. I'm 57 and just bought a 2012 Yaris LE simply because that's what I wanted. What, just because I'm over 30 I'm supposed to buy some stodgy big car or a penis-compensating sports car? I really like the look and feel of the Yaris, the gas mileage is great, and I know it's good because it's a Toyota. What difference is it how old you are?!?
@smithsfan425 Actually, I'm 69 now, and yep, I still have it! I took it to a detailer last year who did a great job making it look almost new again, then took a 2 week trip across the U.S. and it ran great. Just over 112k miles on it now, and I plan to keep it as long as it takes care of me!
@@graytonw5238 that’s awesome! I want a small car but I’m cautious about safety. Really impressed with you driving cross country, that would take huge balls for me.
Perfect car :)
No the Toyotas that are available in Canada and the US are made in Canada and the US. That's a good thing in terms of employment, it's a free market so if Toyota sells better than domestic products that's the fault of the big 3 not Toyota.
That's fine and understandable. There's still time to learn if you want to. You'd be surprised how cool car guys can be if you know a little here and there. We're a dying breed, though. Computerization and high costs make it a pain for a lot of people to be interested these days.
why would you say it's for the under 30 set.. some ppl struggle their entire lives and would love to have their first new car, are they less of people for being older? great review otherwise.
I own and autocross a 2010 Evo X SE and a 2012 Toyota Yaris SE. Both have aftermarket shocks, swaybars, tires, etc. The Yaris is now just as much fun to drive on the street, legally anyway, and cops pay no attention to it.
As an Echo owner, the only plus side is a slightly larger interior volume over the Yaris or Mazda2. I love my car to bits, but if I were to look at a Yaris SE or a Mazda2, I might still go with the Mazda. Yes, I know my 1NZ-FE and how much abuse I throw at it, but the Yaris is only fun when it's an SE (which thanks to a revised steering rack has a huge turning circle). A base Mazda2 is cheaper and still fun, if not sophisticated. Cost be damned, I'd have a Sonic 1.4L turbo manual instead.
@casmatori The Yaris is made in Japan. Kentucky plant rolls out the Venza, Avalon, Camry and Camry Hybrid only. Corolla, Matrix, Rav4, and Lexus RX models are made in Canada.
It lasts a lifetime. Zero issues. I have 200k miles and average 35mpg. No having to worry about hybrid battery. And tires last 70,000 miles because it weighs 2,300 lbs. well worth the sticker price.
Alex B yes sir. I love my little four dour hatchback. I own a toyota 4runner as well. And a lexus in the past. But I have to admit. This Yaris has to be my favorite car that I have ever owned. Handles well and fits a lot of stuff with back seats down. I only have one gripe. Wish the fuel tank had two more gallons :). Besides that I love it!!!
Just because it's American doesn't mean it will perpetually be in the shop. A friend of mine bought a brand new Camry 5 years ago and repeatedly had to take it back to the shop because of a noise coming from the brakes that would not go away. Ended up trading it in.
Many Toyotas are made in the US, but not the Yaris. Just to state an interesting fact, the only subcompact car currently made in the US is the Chevrolet Sonic. That may change in the future.
Probably the only plus of the new Yaris to me is the SE package with bigger tires, better steering, four-wheel disks, slightly firmer suspension, and sport seats. Technically one could just do all that (maybe not the steering) to the older model and have just as much fun. The old hatch was better looking to me in a bug-eyed, funky way like a Mini or Fiat 500. This new one bulges out too much on the edges.
Check your information, only a few models are built in the USA. Most of their models, including their Lexus side-brand is built in Japan. Like this Yaris, it's origin is Japan.
@corvettekid224 Actually I don't think the Yaris specifically is made in the US. I was simply telling the troll that most of Toyotas you see today are made here. x
if i had one of these id have to get it in black. and the first thing id do with it is add tinted windows, then HIDs/LEDs. im just waiting for toyota to hurry up and put in atleast a 5-speed or a 6-speed auto.
@Seattlecarnut Well to tell the truth Toyota have never really been a major maker of larger vehicles. It's only in the American market they produce larger cars (predominantly) So the Yaris is what Toyota is majorly about - small affordable cars for everyone.
@Seattlecarnut Yes, but the Land Cruiser has only been "big" in the past 20 years as SUVs have increased in popularity. It's the same with Land Rover, they were never the 5500lb vehicles they are now to begin with.
How is the Yaris being cute a selling point? And yeah, making an Echo look good (ish) is kinda a bitch, but it can be done. What bugs me is the Mazda has the same displacement as a Yaris, but still can't overtake the Toyota's ancient engine in power or economy. Mazda seemed to do a half assed job in that camp, and needs to get some power in there asap-- even the Fiat 500 Pop is nipping at the Mazda2's power output with a smaller 1.4L.
Wow this one tested slow. Most the manual SE's have run around the 8.7-9.1 marks. Even my 446,000 mile Echo could give this tester a run for its money.
No it's not. Considering any other magazine is getting the manual SE as low as 8.7 seconds, this is a horrible time. I think even my 469,000 mile Toyota Echo could outrun Motorweek's time.
It is interesting to see that toyota always offers the top models for test drives while the lower-mid range models people buy most have far less amenities. If you want those features belonged to 21st century car, prepare to pay for a premium for a toyota emblem. Look at the toyotas of the 90s and early 2000s, and compare the toyotas they build today, you can see the downward spiral of the "value" toyota boasts so hard. All in all, if toyota wants to rise again, it should not ride on past glory.
Yes Toyota reliability is legendary (I've owned a few) But Hyundai isn't that far behind..I drive a 2006 Hyundai Sonata V6 w/138,000 miles and the only things I've changed are oil and brakes...I also have a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon V6 with 100,000 miles on it..Only changed timing belt and oil and filter...Fun reliable cars...Older models seem more reliable.
I didn't know cars could be gay or straight. And what is wrong with the gay Japanese? I don't see how gays in Japan are any worse or better than gays anywhere else. I bet our gays are just as good as the Japanese gays. I don't know any Japanese gays so I can't say for sure. I have to assume there is parity.
@ExistUNDRGROUND they only put it on lower trim model just like other JAPANESE automakers, you NIMROD -______-, And if toyota started listening to everybody and add all these luxuries features and High-End technologies their will be no need for LEXUS and you guys would be paying 29,000 and up for a COROLLA and 40,000 and up for a CAMRY duhhhhhhhhhhhh ! Think before you TALK !
Finally a good and real review of Yaris. Unlike Consumer Report, who bash it for nothing.

Cool, I'll wave at you in the repair shop from my Toyota.
I am glad that they fixed the dash. From center gauges to in front of the driver.
SE model looks quite nice. Not messy or overstyled like some subcompacts. It has a sophisticated and clean look

If you live in Canada, the Yaris sedan is still alive and well, but you'll have to live with the center-mounted instruments.
