    I have a 2007 Yaris with 218,000 miles and has been very trouble free, and on the highway you can reach 38 to 40 MPG without a problem with cruise. (keep the RPMS below 3,000 or about 68 MPH) I kept up on the fluids, and only had a voltage regulator that needed to be cleaned, and a seat belt recall. I drove 120 miles a day, used synthetic mobile one oil. dream to own, not sure I liked the newer model, but it had a great engine reliability.

    You're advising me to buy a Ford over a Toyota? I have had two Fords, both have ended in mechanical disaster. I'll stick with Toyota thank you.

      FORD- Fix or repair daily/Found on road dead! I bought a 2014 Ford brand new right off the dealership lot and had to get the transmission worked on 5 times in 2 1/2yrs...sucky! Even though it was covered with the warranty, it was super inconvenient and worrisome! Went to Toyota and got a Yaris and I'm loving it...no issues as of yet and don't expect any especially since my car is a certified preowned vehicle by Toyota standards. I'm good...hello Toyota, goodbye forever...Ford!

    I just bought my 2nd Yaris. I have always owned Hondas, but because of this car, I'm now a Toyota convert. I love this car. It's basic but no mechanical issues whatsoever.

      Luke Hanson You’ll literally never have an issue with this car it has a 94.3 reliability index, industry average is 42.3 literally more than double the reliability of every other car.

    Well this video sucked.. all it did was bash the car then tell me to buy some crappy ford or Honda.. pfft.. Toyota lasts and that is all that matters. Id rather buy this car and have it for years with little to no repairs then buy a Ford or Honda and have it break down constantly. Sure they cost less but you forgot to mention that repair bills add up.

    I miss Long Beach. Love these road test shots around the city. We bought our 2012 Yaris brand new when it was just the two of us. Now we are a party of four and this car is still kicking at 73k miles. No issues at all. Just needed a new battery every 3 years and just replace another one recently.

    He needs to mention how long the car will last...toyota durability and how other cars in the class may have a few more bells and whisltes, but will never be as reliable. The 1.5 in the Yaris will oulast anything in it's class.

    You are absolutely correct that it's not that hard to manually adjust mirrors. Unfortunately I've seen situations where 3 people had to share a car; daughter, parent, and grandparent. You can imagine the craziness if they had to manually adjust the mirror a handful of times a week.

    I just picked up a 2010 Yaris with 12000 (thats right, Twelve thousand) miles. I could not be happier - I now have a commuter that will carry me for the 5-7 years (at 22,000 miles a year) with no worries at all. None. IDGAF about sexy, I have my Mercedes for that.

    Benefits:
    1. No gasoline direct injection, hence no intake valve deposits build-up. (This long-term durability issue for all makers releasing direct injection is probably on the road to being solved, but if you are cautious, it's something to consider.)
    2. No CVT. (Much more reliable than before...but still a potential Achilles heel.)
    3. No 5 speed automatic - 5 speed automatics never had the bullet-proof reliability of the classic 4 speed.. (It wasn't until 2016 that Mazda rolled out its super smooth, super high mileage Skyactiv 6 speed into the Mazda2. I have an iA and swear it's the greatest automatic I've ever had. BUT it isn't as well proven as the funky 4 in the Yaris HB. Will Toyota eventually push its in-house CVT or the Mazda2's new automatic into the Yaris now that M & T are partners- only time will tell. The problem is, the 4 speed is "adequate" while the solutions all have potential issues, and the Yaris we get is really a French car where most drivers take stick shifts...and granpere and granmere are ok with the 4 speed, which just goes and goes and goes).
    4. Toyota build quality. In shopping for a Yaris - mostly only available on Hertz Car Sales lots these days - the Yaris "body integrity" after 30,000 miles and 18 months of rental (ab)use is much better than rivals like the Ford Fiesta.
    5. "Sit upright" positions for front and back seat result in amazing rear seat leg room. The trunk, on the other hand, is a tiny disaster - with more wasted space under the tire lid than above it (more space, I think, under the lid even with the spare still in there).
    6. Super simple controls. For 2017, all trim lines get AEB (pre collision alerts up to 85mph, emergency braking up to 49mph) and lane departure alerts and auto high beams. For 2018 add rear back up camera all trim lines. And yes, they relented and gave the rental fleet "L" power windows and power door locks (no remote though) but still torture us with reach-over manual mirror adjust. At least the mirrors are inside a housing and don't get whacked out of alignment by the car wash - plus they fold front AND back which means less damage from cyclists.
    7. Incredibly light maintenance schedule. Download the manual, free, from Toyota, and marvel how little needs to be done during the first 100k miles. I think performance at the beginning and end would be very consistent, if Top Tier gas and full synthetic oil are used (I use full synthetic with 5,000 mile oil changes - Toyota requires 5,000 miles oil changes since the Yaris still isn't spec'd assuming full synthetic use). Remember, full synthetic doesn't lose viscosity the way conventional oil fortified with VI improvers does, and its so better in terms of volatility that GM now requires full synthetic (dexos2) across its full 2018 product line.
    8. Since this review - which is actually very accurate imho - Toyota improved the sound proofing, widened the seats slightly, and improved the handling. Model years 2012, 2013, 2014 are accurately represented in this review. 2015, 2016, 2017, have improved sound proofing and handling; 2016 and 2017 get Toyota Safety Sense C; and the 2018 gets a backup camera throughout, tilt (not telescope) steering wheel throughout, and sound system/phone controls on the steering wheel throughout.
    9. L's are best bought at Hertz for about $5,500 off MSRP for a 20k 1 year old model (2017) at the time of this post. LE's are dealer only. Sticks and 3 doors are dealer only. The SE is dealer only.
    Negatives:
    1. The automatic is well-geared and delivers 40mpg at 70mph BUT yes you will sound like Speed Racer when accelerating aggressively. Using the "overdrive off" switch for highway passing is more pleasant, although still roar-y, than risking a full throttle kick-down to 2nd. Full throttle on-ramp runs will actually redline the beast instead of giving you nanny-like 5,000 rpm early shift. Kudos you French redliners.
    2. Despite coming from the land - France - of people saving manual transmissions, the clutch engagement point is so high I routinely stalled the stick shift something not a problem with other stick shifts I've driven.
    3. It isn't the Mazda2. The Toyota iA, a rebadged Mazda2 with all the new Skyactiv goodness, is much sportier. BUT the 2016, 2017, and 2018 are limited to the much-inferior Mazda designed pre-collision, AEB system which is low speed (under 30mph) only, also lacks LDA alerts (lane departure alerts).
    4. It is underpromoted in the USA and hence hard to find on dealer lots. In terms of dealers, many dealers are still stuck with new 2016's they couldn't sell. That's sad.
    Curiosity shop dept:
    This sucker is made in France and I believe the engine is now made in ... Poland.

    It is actually 6 years old, it got it in July of 2006 as 2007 model (and it was, it had minor changes from the previous lot). I dont know about consumers report, but mine has been working just great and it is still doing it. It has over 112k Km and has run over all type of roads. The engine works great, just regular maintenance (oil, spark plugs, air filter, etc). Actually is now running with Iridium Spark Plugs and K&N Air Filter. Fuel economy is amazing. Not bat for less than $US12,000.00.

  • @Optimoose20

    Exactly. Heck, my '99 Camaro SS made it to 120,000 miles with the original clutch on it. And what really gets me is why people pay that much money for essentially a rust bucket with wheels. $15K can buy some awesome stuff! The only reason I think one should buy a new car is for the warranty, in which case the Hyundai makes the most sense. Keep up the good work!
    Cheers!

    I have been driving my wee 20 year old Yaris this last 10 years, it has been the best car ever, I just love it, and I am only reluctantly trading it in for a newer Yaris. As for your Ford recommendation, no thanks, I had a Ford for about 5 years, and it was one thing after another with it, every other week there was another problem with it, never again!

    Well, they dont release the model and thats it, they monitor the product and gather info, especially from 3rd party safety agencies. They verified the parts they used and when they were used (the actual lot of cars where the faulty parts were installed) and they place a recall. Ford did it fairly recently with the F-150 that had a potential problem with the gas tank, they just recalled the cars from the affected production and fixed the problem in those cars. It is not too complicated.

  • @tOki3y0xpoP
    @tOki3y0xpoP 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A lot of new cars are 'crappy' -w- The demands for cars are high, so besides focusing on the quality they use to have (compare to cars of the 80's and 90's) they use cheaper materials. But, still, toyotas are the most reliable cars... they last forever! And when they do have a problem... balabing balaboom! Cheap to fix.

  • @wtrdogg20
    @wtrdogg20 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I got a 2007 Accent, and it is still working like day one. In terms or reliability, I feel Hyundai is doing very well. I have many friends that got the Yaris at the same time I got my Accent and they got rid of them already, some of them got Elantras now, and others moved a little higher to Tucson.
    To have an idea, I am also a Honda customer, I currently have a CR-V and I used to have a Civic. So you can imagine my expectations from a car, and Hyundai is meeting them considering the price.

  • @bigcrowfly
    @bigcrowfly 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Problem with the Yaris is that because it is made in Japan, supply is limited so it does not get discounted so in the same dealer you can get a larger much more loaded North American Corolla for the same or less money.
    Also insurance costs of the Yaris are much higher than that of the Corolla, because of the profile of buyers, so much so that they offset the cost of the lower fuel economy of the Corolla.

  • @wtrdogg20
    @wtrdogg20 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, and Honda proactively recalled all cars before something worst happened, not like Toyota that denied the issue at the beggining. Hyundai recalled the Sonatas just for a little issue with the drivers door locking, something with the door not locking by itself if the internal oppening handle was moved at the same time, something very silly like that, I dont remember exactly... and I still think they are reliable, because they did not wait to have victims to run the recall. Thats my point.

  • @hawkermustang
    @hawkermustang 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good point. If you have to share a car all the time it would suck.

  • @wtrdogg20
    @wtrdogg20 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see your point, my problem now is that Honda and Toyota is not offering something that really worths the price tag. The only way to know if a brand is good is giving it a try. I did it and I cant complaint. Toyota and Honda were not well taken in US at the beggining back in the 70s/80s, but people tried them, now look how they are. However, while Honda stills keeps the fame with facts, Toyota is not doing the same lately. Hyundai reliability now is on par (if not better) with Toyota's.

  • @wtrdogg20
    @wtrdogg20 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thats why they were supposed to do evaluations and monitoring the product quality on every production period. Thats how a serious manufacturer knows if there is a potential problem before it happens. Anyway, the way Toyota handled the problem was not the best for a company like that one, without mentioning the type of problem.
    My perception: Toyota used to be great and reliable back in the 90s and early 2000s, now they are just good, but not as good and reliable as they used to be.

  • @wtrdogg20
    @wtrdogg20 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I dont know about the US market and customers, but where I live, they had to go to the point... the issue was more than the floor mats. But anyway, I was 15, too. I used to "argue" about everything at that time, as well, good old times :-)
    As you grow up, you'll learn many things, kid. It is good you have a good starting, paying and taking care of your own stuffs, Congrats! Take care and good luck, High School and College are tough! heheh! Keep making your parents proud! C'ya around, son ;-)

    I am not saying Hyundai has been always good, what I am saying is that they are not what they used to be. Their new level of quality is backed up by several awards. Dude, you know I like Honda, but I am a car enthusiast, not fanboy, I cant be blinded just for loving a brand and not see what others are doing really well. Several award from performance to safety and design are not just for doing bad cars. Hyundai has done a good job, while Toyota is getting behind, basing their sales on a fame.

    No, it's more than that, it's not just because it's a car I don't like. If you want reliability and only reliability, buy a Corolla. But that's the ONLY thing it offers. IMO, that is very important, but as a car, the Corolla does nothing else really that well and it definelty is not the jack of all trades for the same reasons I listed and more. They buy it because they don't know better, but I'm assuming you're a car enthusaist and want more, would you buy it?

    Hmmm, one thing is a recall for a potential situation before it happens or for a minor issue, and other thing is finally taking action for a recall after several people died because the car accelerates by itself and cant apply brakes. When it happened to Ford, it was devastating for their sales (without counting all legal sues after that), in Toyota case, all their reliability fame became just the word, but not the fact anymore. I'll stay with Honda, Subaru and Hyundai for Asian cars.

    Simple yes, but you're ignoring the lackluster handling and horrible interior quality, too factors that are major even in the small compact class. I also am not a fan of cars like the Elantra and Focus, but I also don't like the design of the Corolla and 2012 Civic (looks nice in some colors though) I love the Impreza and Mazda 3 . My point is, the Corool has fallen way behind the class. It placed 8th in MT comparison last year, putting it in last place.

    BTW, the problem with Toyota is that it is too OVERPRICE... They cant base their price tag on their "reliability" fame from back in the 90s, they already proved to not be the same after that huge Recall, the major in car industry history, incluiding several mortal victims as a result (worst than the Explorer issue with the tires). Honda, their cars are pricy, but at least they deliver for the price, even though their current designs and details (especially in the Civic) could be way better.

    People today are so soft to keep crying about manually adjusting your mirrors. I've owned many cars like that, trust me, its not hard to do. Having said that, I do find this car underwhelming. However, it would make a great car for Obama to drive.

    LOL, that BS about the rubber floor mats... Man, I really think that had nothing to do with it. I know about people that had the same problem without those floor mats. The problem was something wrong with the pedals themself.
    I mean, I totally understand that you are a Toyota lover (I can tell just by reading your main TH-cam nickname), but there are other people, not me precisely, that knows the truth about that ashaming recall.
    Anyway, you buy TOY-ota, we buy cars. Good chatting with ya ;-)

    This is the problem with toyotas nowadays. They just make boring cars. When you see the styling and performance of their competitors you just wonder what the hell is toyota doing? They have the resources to do better and compete in the market but for now they aren't doing really new. I say they should take a risk and up the ante.

    Good to know you buy other brands, well, your parents, you are just a kid. About the 90s Camry, it was really a good car, a good example of what Toyota used to make: really good quality cars.
    You argue the ignorance, OK, I do almost the same, however I preffer not to always argue, but to listen other people and share opinions.
    Good to know that a 15 years old kid drives manual. I learned to drive when I was 10, back in 1990, in a 1985 Ford F-150, manual tranny.
    Good talking with you, son.

      I agree that Toyota has a good reputation for making reliable cars, but my experience with them in trying to get this defect resolved has completely shattered my respect for them. After I paid nearly $20,000 (after principal, fees and interest) should I have to drive a vehicle that is unsightly and an eyesore after less than tree years? No way! I paid way too much for a defective vehicle and got absolutely no help from Toyota USA. They didn't stand by their brand and completely dismissed me as a consumer.

  • @wtrdogg20

    Honda, well, they still have the fame and facts to back it up, unlike Toyota that just has the fame, but their are not backing it up with facts. In terms of design, well, lets be honest, Toyota and Honda arent doing their best.
    Would I buy a Honda? probably, depending on the model (a Pilot maybe), a Toyota? Definitely no, unless I need a Land Cruiser, not a luxury one. Hyundai? It has been a good car, probably a Santa Fe, but I am not lover of those CUVs.
    It is matter of giving them a chance.

    • @MichaelWebber
      @MichaelWebber 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely right with your math. It made no sense to me at all until I saw that almost the entire "L" sales are to rental car agencies. I think Toyota deliberately creates "pain points" in the L to "protect their brand." The ones they sell through the dealers are mostly LE's and even SE's. Flip side is, Hertz is currently selling 2017 L's for $12800 with under 20,000 miles - that's about a $5,500 savings. Suddenly the Yaris is "priced right". Question is sorting out a lightly abused Yaris from a heavily beaten one.

    In resume: Previous Yaris was way better than this one. It doesnt even offer the sedan version anymore. It's OVERPRICED and those manual mirrors are the worst I have seen in a car now, no even the little internal sticks? So you have to lower the windows everytime you need to adjust them? and what if it is raining? or snowing? Is that a good way to push the buyers to buy the next trim level? C'mon, there are way better options in the market at way better price for an inexpensive daily driver.

  • @hondaftw1234

    That means nothing, that justs means a bunch of fools have bought the car based on it's reputation and have not test drove anything else in the class. Face it, Toyota's compact cars are underwhelming with their boring/ugly styling, crappy interiors, sub-par driving dynamics and outadated 4 speed autos.

    Hmm, sorry, but I think you speakl like a fanboy... Again, sorry, that is my perception. Why? Because it is well known that American were not too convinced of the Japanese products. Anyone objective and follower of the car industry history IN GENERAL, without favoritisms, knows that Toyota and Honda had to make their reputation on reliability, especially in US, where they had to fight against the domestic brands and all prejudgements after WW2. And about Hyundai reliability, just google it.
