- In the seventh episode of this series of GCSE Sociology revision videos, I turn attention towards sociological theories on the role of education in society. I look at the arguments of functionalism, Marxism and feminism and consider how you can use theory to answer a typical essay question.
The video is aimed at GCSE Sociology students but will also be useful as a recap to those studying at a higher level, particularly if you’re new to the subject. It’s 26 mins long. I hope it’s helpful for you!

12 markers are methods questions. Essentially, you need to do an intro, 4 x paragraphs (aim for 2 strengths, 2 weaknesses) and a conclusion. Sorry that didn't come in time for your exam - but hopefully it sets you straight for the future! Cheers!

hi sir! can we criticise setting by saying that marketization means that educational triage takes place in school. this means that the borderline children (mainly wc) will be given more attention and thus compensates their disadvantage within the education system because they are given support to boost their achievement?
That would be a sound criticism! I’m guessing you’re an A-Level student with that kind of knowledge?! Alternatively, you could always argue that students are able to work their way out of particular sets with hard work and dedication. Well done and good luck for your exams!! ✌️
Can all of this be applied to AS level sociology? I definitely remember learning most of this but do I need to go more in depth at AS level?
Absolutely. You’ll always need to go into greater depth (and be more analytical and critical) but you could do a lot worse than to use these vids as a starting point ✌️

Anyone know the structure for a 15 marker about education
Hey there! In short, it's an intro, 3 x paragraphs (1 must mention the thing mentioned in the question), conclusion. For e.g. The Q could be something like 'Evaluate the view that differences in achievement is a result of teacher labelling.'
You'd want to make sure that 1 paragraph is on labelling, and the other 2 are on other factors, e.g. material deprivation and anti-school subcultures. Hope that makes sense?!
