    Don't be afraid to join at a later age. I was 37 when I was at bmt. I was dorm chief (leader of the flight and the toughest job). And I was in the top 3 most fit in my flight. So don't think that just because everyone is younger they will be in better shape. So many airman that were fresh out of high school or college were out of shape. I agree that sometimes being older is a good thing. You understand more why the Air Force makes you do certain things in boot camp.

      The heat is not a bad thing. I went through June 19th through August 10th 2018 322TRS/FLT569, black flag conditions meant we were hardly outside but it did suck during beast week because we got flagged out of the fun stuff. Also you're reminded to hydrate and will get in trouble for not taking a drink.

    I USED to play trombone. In middle school. For 2 years then I quit band. I have no memory of how to play it. If I step forward what would I play? I hear I’ll get made a cymbal smasher. Is that true? I have also been told by friends that did BMT to not step forward. Would you say you have to do more when in band flight? Because you have the normal BMT stuff plus the band stuff. Or would you say it makes BMT more “enjoyable”

    • @FateTheArcher
      @FateTheArcher 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It depends on the person to be honest. Keep in mind, I graduated in August of 2016, and BMT has experienced a few changes over the past couple of years.. I know that I never had that need to quit, but I also came from a home life where there was a lot of yelling and real threats to physical and mental health. If you are used to being scared to be at home half of the time, going to BMT feels like a fucking vacation. It's especially easy if you keep in mind your life is gonna get even better upon graduation. That's just me though. In my flight there were plenty of girls that came from more stable walks of life, and there were quite a few who almost gave up because the TIs terrified them. The big thing that helped those girls was that we reminded them it's only 2 months long. That feels like a long time at the start, but you have to take everything one meal at a time. If you're struggling just focus on getting to the next meal. If it gets to be too much talk to your wingmen about what's stressing you out-- 9/10 times they can relate and will help you through it. Again, though, this was my experience 3 years ago. Everything I've seen on BMT for recent months shows it's a lot easier compared to when I went through, and as I said, I thought it was easy for me. Anither big thing to remember, if you want to quit, and the TIs let you leave, you dont go straight home. You get sent to separation flight, which can leave you in BMT for almost as long, and sometimes longer than the 8 and 1/2 weeks of BMT you signed up for. I got sent to med-hold (another flight in the same squadron as separation flight) -- and from what I saw, separations is 1000x worse than anything you can experience in normal BMT-- because you're just sitting there waiting to have your paperwork go through for weeks. You're left to watch from the distance as the flight you came in with progresses through basic, while you wonder what it would be like if you didnt give in early. -- Had so many conversations with separation flight trainees, and 90% of them would say stuff to me like "If you get better, at least you have a chance to graduate- we either gave up too soon or had the chance taken from us due to medical/discipline/etc... work hard to get better for all of us who dont have that chance"...
      Aka: if you feel like quitting, just remember quitting will make you stay there longer and you'll possibly be left waiting long enough to regret the choice.

    • @mongdc
      @mongdc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fate Fate I cannot thank enough for this response!! Thanks for taking the time to explain your experience not just to me but to open up about it to all girls out there who don’t know what to expect or how to feel about it. This is amazing. I had no idea you have to go through all that when you quit or that it gets that hard with all the paperwork.
      :) so happy I asked

    Hello, this question is in reference to the Band Flight comment you made. I haven't played an instrument in a very long time, do you have to be really good at playing an instrument/reading music or do they teach you how to do all those things?

    • @lanewilliams867
      @lanewilliams867 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rmzjon it you haven’t played in a while they won’t take you into band flight and you have to know how to pretty much do everything on your own they will not teach you. They expect you to know how to do it all hence why they won’t take you if you haven’t played in a while

      We you get to bmt they will ask who has played an instrument if you play a drums or any band instrument you will automatically get put in band camp if you tell them...from there you practice playing instruments instead of marching like other flights...

    • @carlslv7
      @carlslv7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gabbie you need to be able to know how to read notes and not much more. Usually they ask the first night you get in who played an instrument before. After they put in band flight. You won’t play the piano since it’s technically a marching band.

    Are the new trainees still being assigned sage ABU’s or are there now OCP’s with the coyote boots?
    I heard from other trainees that it depends on your MTI, but that I may be able to wear a “non-uniform” but more comfortably and lightweight boot like a Danner Tachyon or Reckoning.
    What can you say about this?

      Is there an opportunity to wear another style of sage or coyote (depending on uniform) if I bring them myself, versus the gravity boots assigned with the uniforms?

    • @Scoogwie
      @Scoogwie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say don’t bring any boots, just wear whatever you’re issued while you’re there. Even now some MTIs don’t allow trainees in their flight to buy lightweight boots because they want everyone to be uniform. Just be smart and don’t chance anything, wait until you get to Lackland

    • @aviatorlogic
      @aviatorlogic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went through BMT late last year. To be honest, I prepared very little other than trying to follow the workout routine the AF website recommended. Be sure to work on your sit-ups and push-ups, as you will be tested on that periodically and it's best to come onto the scene already able to pass (33 push-ups and 42 sit-ups in a minute). You will constantly have PT with each day alternating between strength and running. The strength workouts are not bad once you get into the routine. Some people in my flight were not really prepared for running though. On run days you are expected to run for 26 minutes straight at your own pace, so long as you don't walk or stop. As for the ASVAB, I downloaded an app on my phone with practice questions from all of the subject areas and went through those a few times a week. The computerized test did not seem bad at all. If you've taken the ACT or SAT, it's mildly comparable in format to that, but reasonably easier in my opinion. I knew nothing about mechanical or electronic things going into the AF, but I scored in the 90s in every area, and I'm sure you can too! Good luck!

      @MegaRecon117 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aviatorlogic , Thank you very much I've been training for maybe 4 mo. now and I've been working on what you said. I appreciate your insight it really helps. I did not know about running for 26 minutes straight, so i was only doing 10 minutes at a good pace to me, i will now try to improve on that. Thank you!

    • @aviatorlogic
      @aviatorlogic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MegaRecon117 I'm glad I was able to help. For your fitness test, the run makes up the majority of your score. I believe the minimum for the 1.5-mile test is just over 13 minutes, but if you can make it in under 11 minutes before BMT you'll be in a great position to score very well when it counts. To improve, I fully recommend a mix of comfortable-paced long distance runs (somewhere between 2-3 miles is useful to prepare for the average distance of PT run days) and HIIT training. For me, 15-30 second sprints followed by the same duration of a light jog/walk for about 20 minutes really helped boost my performance and it trains your heart very well without being too exhausting. Kudos to you for staying at it for so long 😊
