I attended an Air Force DEP meeting in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
I got to answer a lot of Air Force questions for people who are joining.
I got the opportunity to go to my hometown recruiting station and talk with some recruits in the DEP. We had a few Air Force questions that were asked that the Air Force recruiter and I got to help answer. Overall I expected a lot more Air Force questions to be asked but we did get a lot of good Air Force questions answered in this Air Force DEP recruiting video. Hope you guys enjoy. If you have anymore Air Force questions, comment below and someone may be able to help answer for you.

I did exactly what you advised - back in 1976. I enlisted for 6 years with the last 2 being inactive reserves. I had a guaranteed job and went through an 8 month technical school. During my last review, my boss (a 20 year Master Sgt.) gave me two pieces of advice. He said I should "make the AF a career because it's a great way of life." Then he said, "off the record, you'd be a fool to stay in." I was willing to re-enlist IF the AF could guarantee cross training me into digital flight simulators and stationing me at one of my bases of preference on my dream sheet. They wouldn't commit to the base of preference by telling me "the needs of the AF come first". I said go ahead and start processing my separation paper work. I have no regrets about joining the AF but I knew I could find a good job in the civilian world - and I did.

Buddy. Don't know if you're thinking of staying in or getting out, but based on what I've seen of your ability to lead and direct, I wish you'd stay in. We need people like you. You ever consider OTS? I can see you there. Enlisted to Officer could be a great fit for you. ( One Staff Select to another) You've already created a wave... ride it.

My DEP is usually kinda shy too or maybe just nobody has that many questions due to all the info online now. Within like 5 minutes my recruiter is like "sooooooo... any questions???"

The real hustle is finishing your 1st contract and immediately going to a reserve unit. At this point either A) go to college via your GI benefits or B) begin applying for federal government jobs.
If you latch on to a Gov agency, you can buy ur military time and continue to contribute to TSP (with the 5% match he mentioned). You’ll get veterans preference when applying for Gov jobs so if you meet the minimum qualifications, you’ll at least get an interview.
In the end you’ll end up with two retirement checks!!

I want to say thank you for your service and thank you to Makenna as well. The sacrifices made by military spouses is often extremely underestimated. I was in the Army as an Intelligence Analyst from 1998-2006. My son enlisted in the Air Force about a month ago and will leave for BMT in January. I follow you on this channel and also on the Gott Love channel so I got my son watching some of your videos here on this channel and he is really enjoying them so far. So thank you for your service and also for taking the time to post these helpful videos so others, such as my son, can prepare themselves better for the adventure that lies ahead.

It's also such a small world. I remember making friends with a my friend Chris while station in Turkey. We then later found out that his dad worked with my Step-mom who were also military back when I was an AF Brat. It was just trippy that I knew his brother, and had met him more than once way back when I was third grade. Then there we were multiple years later across the world, and became great friends.

I was just at my DEP meeting on the first, it was basically the same as the one you were at. I got there early, he was making jokes with everyone in the beginning before everyone showed up. Then when they did, the recruiter talked about the retirement program that was being put in place, I think there was only one person that asked a question, he also covered the airman's creed and the Wild Blue Yonder song.

RAP stands for recruiters assistance program. You can do RAP every year if you want. Once i gain more rank i'll probably ask local recruiters if they need some help. I'd love to come in and talk to DEPers on a down to earth level.

i don't know if there are regulations against this, but when your contract is coming up, start applying to civilian or other jobs before you get out. most applications you can put a start date when you're available. sometimes you can put in more detail that you're in the service and put your expected separation date. that way, you could get a job sooner after you leave, then get out, and be jobless for the coming months until you get a job.
again, i don't know if there are any regulations the military denies you from doing that though.

As to what you were saying about advancement, in the Navy we have something called an I love me binder. Basically it's a written record of all of your achievements and awards. Also I have been in the TSP since bootcamp. However I'm thinking about doing the the New Blended retirement program.

    Hello Kyle and everyone,
I plan on joining the Air Force and have a few questions regarding my options.
    1. As I told my recruiter, my primary motivation for joining the Air Force is to be able to go to school and complete my bachelor's degree. That's the primary reason I chose the Air Force in the first place, as I came to the understanding that it is the best branch with which to continue my education. Is that true? If not, what other branches would you recommend?
    2. I'm not sure if I'll stay in the Air Force for 20+ years, so I'd like to know if the benefits of a 6-year enlistment outweigh the potential 2 additional years I may not like being there over a 4-year enlistment. From what I gather however one of my top 2 jobs listed below requires a 6-year enlistment, so this may be a moot point.
    3. My second goal is to find a job in the Air Force that I will both enjoy and that will benefit me in the civilian world. To help me make my decision you should know that many of my interests are academic, such as History, Sciences, and Literature, as well as what you'd call "geeky" such as video games, fantasy, anime and what have you. I have also always wanted to learn another language but just haven't put in the time and effort to do so. So far I've narrowed down my top two job choices to "1N3X1 - Cryptologic Linguist" and "3D0X4 - Computer Systems Programming." Are there any other jobs that sound like they would interest me/are these even good choices for me?
Also are there any tips for taking the DLAB and EDPT? From what I've gathered so far the EDPT should be fairly easy for me, but the DLAB may be an issue since I missed out on years of grammar in school.
    4. What are some of the most interesting and up to date bases? I haven't done much research here so I'm open to any suggestions. That said I am anticipating a good score on the DLAB so that I can learn a language and perhaps get placed in a place in that language's country. For reference, my top 5 languages are Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, French and Italian in that order.
If there's anything else you'd like to add, or that you need to know about me please feel free to share/ask. Thanks in advance for all the help.

My top 2 choices are also a “Cryptologic Language Analysis” and “Computer Systems Programming”, as I think they will best transfer over to civilian life. If you see this message please reply !

Exactly when during the zero night or during receiving week a trainee's backpack/belongings get searched in Lackland? I know at USMC and ARMY the MTIs asks you to pour down everything from your backpack and then they go through every piece of your belongings. Is it the same case for Air Force? (Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to sneak in any contraband ot BMT. Just curious in case I can take few tums with me or a photographs or two of my finance. )

Don’t know if you’ll reply but I have a question not mentioned about the DEP program. I have been training my self to pass the bmt/pt but I have a cracked tooth with a few cavities and can’t afford a dentist trip. I was wondering if the military would pay for it and give a dep as long as I swear in which I would?

    • @Jodywithawhy
      @Jodywithawhy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes. The Air Force will take care of all of your dental. Once you’re in, you will be scheduled a dentist appointment, and during that inspection, they’ll find anything they need to fix. Best part is it’s all free. Good luck man

Best move I ever made...I barely passed high school, had no direction and could barely read. Somehow, I passed the ASVAB and qualified to be a Jet Engine Mechanic. During Tech school I was having trouble and was sent to reading specialist...changed my whole life. I excelled in Tech school...served 4 years as a jet mech and later became a Flight Engineer on C141s. After 8 years I applied for and was chosen to go to College on an AFROTC program called POCI...2 years later and a Bachelor's degree later I was an Aircraft MX Officer. I retired in 2015 as a 2 Time Sq/CC and Deputy MX Group CC as a Lt Col. Air Force is the only way to go. I would do it all over again. Aim High

Kyle, how many job positions do you have to list on your dream sheet? There are only two positions that I am interested in, which are boom operator or loadmaster. Can I hold out for these in DEP without being dropped for being “job locked”? I am very eager to join but am in no rush. The reserves say they can guarantee my position/aircraft, but I would much rather go active duty for the pay and benefits since I have a family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I plan on joining the Air Force and have an idea of what job I want. Do you know if Puerto Rico is a base? Thank you!

    • @hellseagle21

Mckenzie Berringer you should just be able to google all Air Force bases and all options should come up and what goes on there so you have an understanding. There’s plenty to do in Okinawa especially enjoy the ocean if you’re into snorkeling, and there are hiking spots but do realize that Okinawa is a very small island and a lot of people do start getting a bit bored of it. Taking leave and going to mainland japan is always a great since it really is one of the most amazing places in this planet.

Each AFSC/job will be different. As that job is special forces it is different from regular Air Force jobs, but in my opinion I think you will not deploy right away you would go to your duty station. Also for being stationed it comes down to if your job can go there and where the Air Force needs you.

Hello Peers! Quick question I went to talk to a recruiter recently and told him my career pathway which is public relations ( photojournalist & Broadcast Journalist) and he told me as expected that those jobs aren’t high in demand. That being said he that one was open this past December and who knows when it’ll open back up I wouldn’t be to picky I would just get in to get your foot in the door. Here’s my question should I wait till my job opens up or just enlist? I see so many people regret their jobs it just leaves me to think..

The broadcast journalist job is a lot easier to get than photojournalism. Get with the recruiter and do an audition tape. If you’re accepted, all you need to do is score a 72 on the asvab and have qualifying physical. The photojournalist job though, that’s tough to come by.

Yes! In many cases, particularly where you go up in rank a little bit, it's even heavily encouraged (which is why they have programs like Tuition Assistance to help pay for schooling). However, your job always comes first. If school interferes with your job, your leadership won't be happy, and they may not approve of you doing it.

The air force offers associates (CCAF) through their Community College for all 150 jobs. You just need to complete your training (done early in your first enlistment) and typically complete six college elective classes. Most people in the AF have decent free time to complete classes. I suspect other branches may not have this advantage.
