Is It Numbers Matching? - 428 CJ Cougar by the Numbers

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ส.ค. 2024
  • In this video we delve into the complex topic of decoding tags, date codes, and other numbers to check if your classic Ford / Mercury is "numbers matching," using Don's newly acquired '69 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 Cobra Jet convertible as an example. While we haven't covered the subject 100% in this video (to keep it concise) we think this covers most of the major components and gives you the knowledge you need to figure out what your numbers mean. As mentioned in the video, we highly recommend Marti Auto Works, especially his Tagbook, which made this video possible. Visit him at www.martiauto.com , and for everything Cougar, visit us at www.cougarpartscatalog.com

    window switch was put there by an assembly line worker to be the mystery rattle the dealership mechanics could never find?

  • @ZADOMAN48
    @ZADOMAN48 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As cougars were coming down the assembly line each station would bend and snap off the tags from the master sheet as in my 68 all the tags once removed can be placed all together in a "strip" including core tag door tag and VIN .

    Great vid for the Ford buff!! I very much enjoyed it! Very nice Cougar and nice score on all the original stuff! The original carb in the trunk was a great score, as was the build sheet! Now that this vid is 7+ years old, you probably have this car looking like new by now.

      The next owners had it totally restored by KTL, so it's looking better than new now!

    Back in the 70's I had a 68 GT500KR, a 69 R-Code Mach-1, and a 73 351CJ Mach-1. Of all those the one I wish I still had was a 70 Cougar Eliminator with what I was told back then was a SCJ 428. It had leather seats, tilt, AC, 4 speed manual with Hurst shifter, and all the extras you could get on one. Fully loaded is what that car was. It was custom ordered by the owner of a Ford dealership in Houston. He didn't like the spoiler on the deck lid, so he had it delivered with a luggage rack on it. I bet there wasn't too many sold like that. It was a dream to drive. Sold it to my old girlfriends father when I went into the Army back in 1976. Yea, the Shelby was fast, but I still dream of driving that Cougar. I am jealous of yours on this video...;)

      Your right Lee they didn’t. I was told back then by the first owner that it came without AC, but that he had it installed. I first questioned it too when I opened the hood & saw the Oil cooler & horn placements.

    I totally agree with stangcrazy89. You could of got a non-matching everything. But for just the fuel pump and passager window to be non original I think you got lucky. Or did you know more than you're telling us. I was impressed seeing the original mufflers. I would think the body has to be in near excellent shape, meaning the sheet metal. It looks like an resto.

    Yeah this was a classic… I knew it was a matching car.. other than it being raced.FE Motors Were Real Solid.. They just were. Especially The Hipo. 390 / 428 CJ/ SCJ . But extremely Underrated especially in their day.. As We Remember the 429 Actually appeared in 1968.. great car .. & Don Yer very special too… like I said you can tell That Motor never been pulled..

      I do not believe such a book currently exists. Kevin Marti (Marti Auto Works) wrote the ones for the Cougar and Mustang. He has a contract with Ford for access to all of the the production data for all 1967-2014 North American vehicle production. He does offer what he calls "Marti Reports" which will give you production data for a given vehicle: www.martiauto.com/martireports.cfm

    why would it be important for the fuel pump to match? fuel pumps wear out, can you refurbish a fuel pump such as those carters?

    • @WestCoastClassicCougar
      @WestCoastClassicCougar  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For concours restorations, every detail matters. Having the correct fuel pump is just another "original equipment" piece that the picky guys / judges will notice. The good news is, they can be refurbished. There is a rebuild kit, see here: www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/carterkit.html

      @@WestCoastClassicCougar what would the date "window" be in order for components to be considered numbers matching? From watching the video at first,the window seemed to be within a month of the car bein built....not to exceed the build date,which makes sense. • @jarivasarainen1924
    @jarivasarainen1924 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    All nice about numbers matching but who cares about the numbers, you drive the drivetrain and not the numbers. If you want to build a vehicle for yourself then why limit yourself with this OEM crap? If it's a rotisserie resto with no planned street time in the future at all, and only restore it to keep it undriven in a bubble, then go for it. These kind of videos are only for the investors, not car guys. Good for preserving history but I'd never buy a numbers matching vehicle because it is irrelevant if you want to actually drive the car. Buy a well built hot rod instead.

    • @kennethsouthard6042
      @kennethsouthard6042 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @butchtropic I have lately seen articles where they now recommend that if you own a rare numbers matching car and you want to drive it, that you remove the original engine and store it to preserve it. You then buy a crate motor to install in the car for driving.
