1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 CJ/SCJ - Ridiculously Underrated

  • For the 1969 model year, Ford really upped the ante when it came to performance per dollar. The new 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 equipped with the 428 Cobra Jet (CJ) V8 or 428 Super Cobra Jet (SCJ) V8 had a purchase price an average buyer could afford yet had fantastic performance that was the envy of most muscle car owners.

    In the autumn of 69 I got to drive a new, dealer demo 70 Cougar Eliminator with a 428 cj, 4 speed, and 3.50 gear. (Mom was a secretary at the local Lincoln Mercury dealer). The car was complete blast to drive. The combination of torque, throttle response, and gearing was just spot-on. The polyglas tires hooked up pretty well and the exhaust/induction sound effects were priceless. It made excellent power right up to 6000 rpm with perfect torque at all rpm. I went through a whole tank of Sunoco 260 that night. I'll never forget the 428 cj.

    I had a simple 1969 Mach-1 with a 351-W, 4 speed.Very fun car for driving thru the mountains to get to the coast. Suspension was good for powering out of the corners. Nice car for cornering, very stable. Smaller engine meant less weight on the front end, & the 351 was no slouch for the day!

      Very true. The lighter nose gave the small blocks the advantage in cornering.

      Hi surfing36, I had one also and the first thing I did when the original tires wore out was to replace the rears with 235/70R15 radials and the front with 205/14 radials and I added on a ADCO brand rear sway bar. It handle vastly better.

    I remember in '74-'75, my friend was a car dealer. We would go to auto auctions and he would buy American muscle cars for practically nothing. '69 390 4speed mach1-$1200, '69 Z28-$1500, '70 Road Runner- $900, '70 440 six pack Challenger-$1500, etc.All cherry with low miles. Nobody wanted them, because of the so called gas crisis.Those were good times.

    I ran a 1968, 396 Chevelle ( 375 HP ) with a 4 speed and 373 gearing during the late 60's. These 428 Mustangs, particularly with automatic transmissions, were what I hated most to meet at stop lights. They were incredibly fast and I got beat by them more than any of the Mopars or other GM products. Looking back, the Mustangs probably had a slight weight advantage also. Not saying they would always outrun the "Shevelle", but as quick as anything I ran in those days!

    According to a dyno engineer that worked at Ford during the late 60s and early 70s the 428 Cobra Jet put out an actual 428 horsepower on the dyno. So the 428 CJ was grossly underrated.
    I worked at a Ford dealer in 69. And I remember first time transporter pulled in with 6 brand new Mach 1s everybody came out of the showroom and their jaws just dropped to the ground those cars were beautiful compared to the 68. The 69 70 Mustangs are cars that look fast even sitting still.

    • @CJ-ib2jy
      @CJ-ib2jy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I have never seen a pure stock CJ produce that much. I am sure that the Ford engineers dyno tuned their 428CJ prototype to get that HP figure. That engineer built and tuned motor also turned a 13.40 quarter mile times in a '68 mustang. But the best time Hot Rod magazine could squeeze out of an assembly line built 428CJ mustang was 13.56 seconds. Assembly line built 428 cobra jets tuned by factory recommendations pulled about 20-25HP less than engineer built and tuned CJ's The great performance of the 428CJ's was not due to a super high HP figure but due to its flat torque curve coming off the line with over 400 pounds of torque but still pulling between 440 to 465 pounds at higher RPMs (depending on the car and motor - they varied!). Most high HP motors, including the 426 HEMI and the ford 427MR were more peaky, offering more HP and torque than the 428CJ at high RPMs but less at low RPMs making the 428CJ appear to have similar HP when drag raced when it really didn't. The real HP figures for the 426 HEMI and 427FE depended on the year. Although advertised figures for both motors with 2 four barrel carbs was 425HP, actual HP for both motors continued to climb as the year's went by. Ford increased their valve size on their LR heads and then produced a new, more powerful MR head with even bigger valves. The 426 HEMI got a hotter cam in '68 and in '70 went to hydraulic valve lifters on the same hot cam which increased actual valve lilt due to 0 valve lash.

      From what I remembered, Ford took an early lead, but eventually Chevy caught up and won the trans am series in 69, and then Ford came back with a vengeance in 70 and won the trans am with Parnelli Jones and George Follmer driving the 'factory' cars. It was a great era for pony car racing.

      @matthewnosal6893 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@d.e.b.b5788 Ford saw how Chevy had stepped up their game in the trans am series. So in 67-68 the brought out the tunnel 302 and it was a disaster. Too much port volume for such a small displacement. They had to wind them up to 7/8 k rpm. The bottom end just couldn’t handle it. Then the Boss heads came out. The rest is history.

They were very fast after some serious tuning and a cam change . 428's were a much better street engine than the 427's because you didn't need to work on them to keep them at the top of their game .

      @@brianreed7959 Wasn’t Ford beating Ferrari when Chevy was still trying to figure out how to make a big block stay together. And then in trans- am Ford took 66,67 and 70 the only year every manufacturer had factory backing, everyone was there. Only reason Ford didn’t win 69’ was because a huge wreck took most Ford cars out early in the season but they had finished first first four races before the wreck. In top fuel the SOHC went drag racing and won only triple crown in top fuel. Bob glidden, roush and gapp dominated in pro stock too. Ford was also just getting started in Formula one racing with the DFV dohc 4 valve V8 that ended up becoming the most successful engine in Formula One history. My favorite class was NHRA asking each manufacturer to come out and prove which one was the quickest baddest of them all. They could use whatever engine, body, trans, rear- end they wanted. A Frankenstein of all the manufacturers best parts. Ford won so much they killed the class. But yeah you and your trailer park buddies running 15’s down the 1/4 in 1972 in that rust bucket chevell makes cheby the fastest and bestest ever. Magazine ran all these cars stock back in 60’s and 70’s Fords were the fastest many many times. The Mercury Cougar Xr-7 cj ran 13.2 bone stock making quickest muscle car tested in 1970

    Nice to see a good report on the CJ. Still have a 69 CJ fb 4spd bought June 1969 sitting out in my garage. A few years of ownership but only one of many like my 67 GT500 24yrs or 70 Boss9 3 yrs. Although - maybe cause I am gittin a bit old - has a few of your facts different. Engine HP rating was for playing the NHRA class game. FACTORY advertised HP/pound. IF you look at FORD's own Muscle Parts book from 1969 (?) you can find a HP torque graph that put the CJ at 415HP. Think that rule was changed in 1971. CJ 428 was a very good street engine just like the 440, 455 430 from other mfg. Ford did a lot to promote it with Muscle Parts & with the Ford Drag Teams using both Stang, Torinos and even Mavericks. There was a lot of factory technical support in the mid-late 1960s. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.

Hate to say what books I have - still have the sales brochure for my 67 GT500 (24 yrs). Complete Ford Master Parts books from before they went to microfich (mid 70s) Owner's manuals for a dozen 60s cars. Most of the the Ford performance manuals of the 60s Hot Rod & Car Craft from 1964 and hundreds of others of the day. Been weeding out a lot of that old stuff the last couple of yrs. Expect most will go in a dumpster when I die as its all online now.

      Get real.
      As they drive off the showroom floor, the 428 CJ was at best a 285 HP - as it sat in the car with al engine accessories and full factory exhaust system in place.

    The 1966 Ford GT40 MkII went 0-60 in 5.2 seconds with 485 horsepower. It was also a much lighter mid-engined car, indicating that the SCJ Mustang, capable of 5.5 s to 60, was indeed much more powerful than the factory claimed.

    great video...your comments on their sturdiness, very accurate.....but they blew up the big wedge left and right back in the day,....really just being a beefed up and upstroked 390 with big valve medium riser heads.....with the 428, rpm was critical,...stay at or under it, they,d live all season,..go above it, and ka-pow,...better never, miss a gear or kapow....they were known for living longer in automatics....they weren't cross-bolted 427s...people just wouldn't stay with factory limits so...of course the partially restricted main oiling passages being half closed in the all fe,s but the 427...[actualy 425 cubes] didn't help matters much, but they owned stock eliminator slots in the late 60s and 1970...rated the same 335 as some of the 390s?.....ha!!!....with that big arm crank?....oh sure.....great coverage of a legendary engine......

      My cousin bought a '69 390 GT 4 speed and at the time I couldn't figure out why he didn't go for the 428. I had a 67 390 GT at the time and knew it's limitations which made it all that much more bizarre to me. Also, I seem to remember that either in 68 or 69 Ford also had a 427 option in the Mustang. Now that was the Hi-po engine to get but I'm sure it was a very expensive option and very few built as I've never seen one. Had a neighbor at the shore in the mid 60's who stuffed a 427 hi riser in 56 T-bird.....what hoot!

      I had a friend in the late 70's got a 390 4 speed car from the original owner who special ordered it. Pretty much regular Mustang except odd choices in that it had a non-posi and i think a 3.00 gear. Even with L60 tires you had to launch easily. But the TORQUE ! I was in the car when he short shifted 3rd to 4th on top of the torque curve and left a black streak about 6ft long with one tire. It also was great on street races starting from 70 mph. Great pull away speed since it had low numerical gears

    Nobody I know ever "underated" the 428CJ - The engine that's far too often overlooked is the "Baby Boss 429" - The (1970 model) 351 Cleveland (4 barrel) It's a true high performance engine which actually has much larger valves and ports than the big block 428, putting out (actual, not advertised) around 340HP! Plus, in the Mach 1 it offered much better handling. The 351C responded nicely to bolt on performance upgrades, too. I know . . I owned 'em both back in the good old days.

      @CJ-ib2jy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The quenched chambered 351C-4V was a great engine but its HP was not 340. I owned one back in the day. It was great fun once you got the engine up to speed but its torque suffered at lower RPMs. The valves and ports were too big for smallish cam that Ford stuck in there - low intake charge velocity. I assume they planned to go with a better cam but was forced to settle so the engine could pass emissions. An aftermarket cam, even an aftermarket street cam would make that motor. But even stock with an automatic transmission, it would whip 350 powered Camaros. But that engine is more like a round engine than drag racer . For drag racing, its not close to the 428CJ. The 428 provides more torque at 2500 RPMs than the Cleveland had at peak RPMs. The 428CJ only weighs 75 pounds more than the Cleveland. In a '70 Mach 1 (the one with front and rear anti-sway bars) it handles a lot better than people think. I have one in a '70 Mach 1. The 351C block is light but those 351-4V heads are heavy . Worst thing about the 428 is its freaking intake which weighs close to 90 pounds! Swap out that for an aluminum one and the weight drops down close to what a Cleveland weighs.

I've never run the fastback at the drag strip, but, as I mechanically modified the convertible, it made several trips there. My best pass with the car was a 14.308 @ 99.1mph on street tires. Not bad considering I'm giving up over 120 c.i., a four speed top loader and a lot taller gears to an SCJ that turns, according to the video, 13.9 @ 103mph. My 302 is bored .040 over to 308, has a Road Demon 4V, GT40P heads, custom tri-Y headers, KB flat top pistons, a Comp 351W single profile cam (224 duration, .500 lift), Edelbrock Performer manifold, Ford Motorsport roller rockers, anti pump-up lifters, and a shift kit in the C4. 'muh dad have a 4200 pound chevell ss with a 454 no one could beat him' etc etc etc

      stock for stock a big mopar with the 383 finish the 1/4 with almost the same time as the 440, and yes the HEMI (i know its so cool to say HEMI but yeah stock they were marginally faster than a 383) same thing for those chevelle 454 and 502: their 396 equipped cousins wreck them

      SOHC are again pretty. The 90 day wonder engine was the first attempt to have a NASCAR hemi beater and was immediately outlawed by NASCAR as too exotic. It had a few Ford promotional installments but for the most part was delegated to drag racing. It had a great deal of successes along with its issues. Prudhome once commented that you never had to worry about doing oil changes as it was all over the outside of the car by the end of a run. Pete Robinson tried making gear drives to overcome the 6' long chain issues. Ed Pink probably came the closest to synchronizing the cams at rpm. He spent time with strobe lights and high speed camera to see what was happening. Later someone built a Gilmer belt drive.

It had the Torino script on the drivers side of the hood. I sold it in 85 to my best friend to try to get my wife and 2 sons to come back home. He in turn sold it(much to my dismay) to a young man in Ok., who sold it to a Shelby collector. The Shelby collector managed to get my phone# in 89(i live in Maryland) to get more information about the 70 Cobra. No lie, the Shelby collector called me in 91 to see if I'd be interested in buying the 70 Cobra! His wife left him!The problem was, I just bought the 69 Cobra in Feb of that year. Had some$ tied up in it but the Shelby guy said he'd let me have it for $6k! He claimed he invested $9k in it.(he restored it) I tried but had about $3,800 and that was committed to the 69. I called him about a month later and he told me a Vietnam vet, his wife and kids travelled from north east Oklahoma to pick up the 70 Cobra. He didn't get a chance to buy it new because he was serving our country in Nam. Hopefully he's enjoying it with his family. I might just have to take a trip to Ok. Talk at ya later! John

    Great engine just looking for a decent set of clothes. It found them. From 1966 to 1973 AC cars in Thames Ditton in the South of England fitted these engines into the Cobra 427 chassis and clothed it in a beautiful coupe/soft-top body by Italian coachbuilder Frua. Sadly, almost all of the AC 428s were autos (clutch weight too heavy) but today a light clutch could be achieved with a concentric thrust bearing and a Tremec 5 speed box would complete my dream car.

Back in the 1970's when the began putting disc brakes on the front of the Camaro ___ they were the same pads, calipers and rotors they were using on Suburbans and full size blazers and they had great stopping power although they had shoes on the rear. The brakes in my 69 mustang really sucked.
    That red 69 Mustang color was called Candy Apple Red.

    The '71 Mach-1 Mustang is the best looking of them all.

    There is a video on TH-cam by Ramairguy where they dyno test a stock 1970 428 SCJ. They got 405 hp and 447 ft. lbs. of torque.
