When I did the Wing Rack IEM video, I also was working on pieces for this Overview video, especially since in some ways the two concepts dovetailed. Obviously, the Wing Rack can do much more than just be a dedicated IEM mixer for a band so I wanted to explore that more. But, it also works REALLY well in that compact IEM mixer role. Especially with all buses being stereo and the ability to rather inexpensively expand the output count for SEVERAL stereo IEM mixes (using StageCONNECT or else AES50 boxes...). I also wanted to do a bit of a comparison with the X32 Rack. Especially with that becoming a Facebook forum topic. And in some cases, bands might already have the things they need to expand the I/O count already on hand. For example, if someone was using an X32 Rack and maxing it out and wanting the extra power of the Wing Rack (but 'needing' the extra outputs they were getting by utilizing the X32 Rack's Aux outs), they could keep and use the X32 Rack as additional I/O for the Wing Rack. So, that would give them the 8 local outs of the Wing Rack AND the 8 local outs of the X32 Rack. Plus the additional 16 mic inputs of the X32 Rack could become external preamps for the Wing Rack as well. And I guess the Aux I/O would be available as well. Received mine today. Now for the work of setting it up and transferring all of my X32 settings. Then playing with the effects. In the beginning, I'll be using it with a DL32 and a DN4816-O (to drive my IEMs).
@@pvampman It was available as of about Oct 1 or thereabouts. Some places might be sold out and needing to get more though. It's been a hit. If you click the 'shopping' link that is in the video (lower left) I think they still have some there. Or at least did when I tagged them for the link.
Any perspective on the feedback from users regarding the four headphone outputs? My guess would be most would have preferred 8 more XLR outputs in that space?
I tend to lean toward thinking 24/8 for local I/O on a rackmount mixer is pretty darned good and the expansion is pretty painless (in size/packaging/option/price). Especially with the Wing Rack landing at about US$1600.00 currently. But... Obviously, there were a lot of people that were hoping to pull their X32 Rack out of their rack and swap this Wing Rack into its place. And maybe some weren't X32 Rack users but were ready to buy the X32 Rack and had their plans together on how to configure and package everything, but decided to wait on the Wing Rack (expecting the same or more I/O than the X32 Rack. I'd think anyone coming at it from an XR18 would be thinking... "Wow... all of these channels and buses and all of this local I/O is great... And I can expand it too???" So perspective probably factors in here as well. One thing that surprised me was how many people were maxing out the X32 Rack. I know what it can do, but I look at it more as a 16/8 mixer (and have never had one and needed to max it out). But clearly a lot of people have had more vision than me and put those 6 line inputs and 6 line outputs to good use (for extended mix counts and stereo IEM mixes for one thing). And then they never had the need to add extra I/O. Anyone that added I/O probably would've added enough to avoid the Aux I/O and look at it more like I was. And now CAN see the Wing Rack as an upgrade and drop in upgrade in their ear rack. I guess my lack of vision meant I saw the 16 mic inputs and didn't see band channel counts that would 'need' to figure out the Aux outs and incorporate them into ear mixes. Or bring line level RF mics into the aux inputs, plus trax... Or bring the trax in via USB too I guess. So breaking the 16 mic input barrier, and 8 XLR line outs was happening way more than I imagined. But that said, it's such a mature console, and in so many racks as it is, that it simply makes sense people would figure out ways to max that I/O and share that info with others too. I wonder if Behringer had just not even included the headphone amps if that would've lessened the impact. The fact there are SOME kind of outputs there is almost a tease I guess. And once again, if you come at it without comparing to the X32 Rack, there are 8 local XLR outs PLUS 4 built in stereo headphone amps. Onstage a drummer or keyboard player could connect directly to it for their ears. No beltpack necessary. And for a home studio or rehearsal hall? For a 4 piece band, just grab the headphones, e-drums and Kempers and you have a quiet rehearsal space and easy all in one box monitoring capability. So anyone looking at THAT type of scenario and never knowing the X32 Rack existed (or at least never used one), or ever maxing one out, probably would look at the Wing Rack differently. But yeah... had there been 8 more local outs (24/16) or maybe even just 4 TRS balanced line outputs (24/12) that might've satisfied some more people. I think the Wing Rack is targeting a bit different demographic than who maybe who the X32 Rack is targeting in one area. But also, they could've added more local outputs and still hit both demos or a wider demo. For a fee anyway. But maybe they were trying to keep the price point where it is and that drove some decisions? Dunno... As someone that didn't really have a need in the X32 Rack, since it just kind of fit between an XR18 and a full size X32/M32 (bases I have covered) the Wing Rack is definitely a new option in that ecosphere. A definite upgrade to the XR18 in every way, and with a DN box, an upgrade to the X32 Rack too. And more horsepower under the hood at that point than an X32/M32. So, I'm seeing it differently than someone that bought an X32 Rack at some point and either maxed it out immediately, or grew with it and into maxing it out over time. And has the I/O they need right now... But want some of that Wing horsepower. But can't make it work just by buying the Wing Rack alone. But no matter how you cut it, the Wing Rack can do WAY more monitor mixes (stereo even) as far as being able to handle them within the mix engine, than any of the other Behringer/Midas mixers we're talking about.
Hi Alan……. We are moving from an XR18 rack unit to the new Wing rack once it comes in. I know in the past you had videos on drum EQ settings that we used as base points in the past when we setup or XR18. They were great starting points. Do you have the same videos available for the Wing EQ? We are a full e-band all direct including drums. Is it part of your patron page? I’d like to do the same with the drum kit as a starting point if possible. The EQ on the Wing does not mimic the XR18 as I tried to carry the same settings over to the Wing but the EQ’s are different it appears?
Hi! Please give me the factory firmware for the Wing Rack. Version 2.x. Is needed to update the external Dante card. On 3.x, it does not work in the Dante controller. You can download it by USB cable.
Can I use a vocal processor pedal without running microphone to processor then to mixer. I seem to lose quality. Can I just connect the processor to mixer then with another footswitch control the effect on and off?
I really thought this new version would not have the screen. Given I expect to rack mount it and have it on stage for IEMs and mix FOH and IEMs with an iPad, I'll never need to bother with a screen.
The screen is pretty handy, even if not mixing on it or doing mix tweaks, just to set up routing and configurations. As well as jump thru those things to doublecheck your settings.
The omission of the extra aux outputs is silly. There's clearly room for it on the panel and it probably would have cost them five bucks more. Just a ploy to sell more ultranet boxes!
I think you're correct... But I don't recall hearing it. Or at least being bothered by it. So I'm thinking any concerns about fan noise should be pretty low. EDIT: And it MIGHT be I'm just remembering vents, or even vents for a fan, and maybe there's no fan there. I don't want to be quoted as saying there's a fan as much as saying I don't recall hearing any fan noise that bothered me. No fan would certainly be quiet and not bother me! ;)

The Wing Rack is definitely the more powerful mixer and has way more ability to expand much further than that X32 Rack can go. Not just because of the options for hardware to be added, but internally the Wing Rack can feed and control more I/O. But, like I point out in the video, if you just want to buy one piece of gear and max it out without any expansion, the X32 Rack can have more outputs 'out of the box' than the Wing Rack. While the Wing Rack has more mic inputs and of course those additional mic inputs can take the place of the Aux inputs on the X32 Rack. Input-wise, out of the box, the Wing Rack wins that battle. But... Nothing on the Wing Rack can give you anything to compensate for those X32 Aux outputs though... unless you add more hardware... And while you can add more hardware to the X32 Rack as well... it can't natively utilize the StageCONNECT boxes like the Wing Rack can. And those boxes are some smaller (1sp) form factor boxes that can really add to the I/O for not a lot of additional money. Moreso, the mixing engine of the Wing Rack can utilize those outputs for way more STEREO outputs (which can translate to stereo IEM mixes). Of course we could also be talking FOH outputs, fills, delay speaker mixes, a stream mix feed, a recording feed, balcony speakers, nursery speakers, foyer speakers, etc... Depending on the venue and application. It's not just a matter of having outputs for stereo IEMs (or other sep mixes). You also have to have the (stereo) buses within the console to feed them. The X32 platform has MONO buses with a stereo 'option'. For stereo outputs you have to link 2 buses. The Wing has STEREO buses. So those bus sends are already stereo and you just need to add outputs for them to send to. IOW, 16 stereo buses can feed twice the outputs of 16 mono buses. And 16 mono buses add up to only 8 stereo outputs. Of course, the X32 Rack can become 'additional hardware' and BE more I/O for a later Wing Rack purchase. So it's not like an X32 Rack has to necessarily be orphaned when a Wing Rack is added to a band's rack. And not all bands have to have stereo IEM mixes. Or might not even be on IEMs and just need mono wedges. Or there aren't that many overall outputs even with FOH outputs included. But in those cases, then the band's outputs might fit with the Wing Rack's 8 outputs in the first place. Then the comments about adding additional hardware becomes a moot point. And in that case, the Wing Rack is the easy choice IMO.
Behringer's page says 9.44 kg and Google says that is about 21lbs. I would've guessed less than that so I'm glad I looked it up instead of telling you what I thought it probably was. 😉 It also says it draws 130W as far as power consumption goes.
I imagine they might have plans for StageCONNECT to handle a lot of what Ultranet has done in the past. Not sure of that though. There's also the Klark Teknik DN4816U which is (currently anyway) US$159.00 or so... It does a bunch of Ultranet/StageCONNECT and even USB 'tricks'. I don't know if one of them is an interface to take a StageCONNECT output from the Wing and let it then feed Ultranet to a P16 system or not. Maybe someone who has already went down this road and knows will comment.
