The Fast Lane Car The Cherokee, I will go ahead to say that before watching that video, Jeep is more of an of road oriented and more Moab worthy, like the Wrangler and the trailhawk where the Subaru is a life style, Light off road until adventures.

The current version will look like a Jeep with the benefit of 20 year's hindsight, when all the old-timers [us] will be talking fondly about the old-school internal combustion gas [and diesel] engine and proper stepped automatic transmission.
By the way, these are sold with a choice of Diesel engines as well as a couple of gas engines in Europe.

The 199/232/258/4L Inline six has gone over 1 million miles in Taxicabs without a major rebuild. I had both. I had a 1985 with the 2.1 Liter Turbo Diesel and 5 speed manual. and I prefer my new 2018 Trailhawk . But then I am 33 years older now and less prone to doing stupid things off road with my Jeep, though not sane enough to stop from going off road entirely. :D I am not carrying as much stuff in my new Jeep as I did in the Old XJ, but I am towing just as much. Back then people did not pay attention to things like official tow limits. If you could move it, you could tow it. Back in the sixties I regularly towed a 10,000 lb trailer with a CJ with a Small Perkins diesel (export only) from Houston to New Orleans. Never had a problem, but then never traveled very fast either. The Interstate between Houston and New Orleans was still under construction and I never bothered with switching between the US route and the Interstate sections that were built.

I had a ‘90 in high school and a ‘94 in college.... just for perspective, I fit 40 - 30 packs of beer and 12 bags of ice in the cargo area with seats folded down. And with 2 passengers, the rear suspension was absolutely bottomed out! And I agree the motor was bulletproof. 90% of max torque was already there at 1000 rpm. I had mine up to the governed 110 mph limit....scary stuff. Still miss my’94 sport .

We’ve added a few mods for ours which have made lots of difference in capability. 33” BFG TKO’s, 4.5” Procomp springs front and rear, revolver shackles in back, sway bar disconnects, Rusty’s tubular Lower control arms, Aussie locker up front, Smittybilt xrc9500 winch. Charlie M. You say that now. I did the same thing, then it was "oh, I just need 2" lift spacers because the springs are sagging from factory, then its "its more cost effective to replace the rear axle than fix the original", then "the original sway bar and track bar design is completely stupid and prone to failure, and aftermarket beefy ones that will never break are only $50 more" then "well time for new tires. I can buy small stock ones and be limited with its uses, or I can go larger and unlock this jeeps potential for everything", etc. trust me you'll keep it stock for maybe a year-a year 1/2 then if it ever touches mud or dirt you will want more. it's like an addiction, but positive. (unless you start cutting the unibody and doing irreversible things, then I have a problem). and when you get that itch ill save you some money, AVOID ROUGH COUNTRY, go straight to Iron Rock Offroad for just about everything, Rubicon Express for springs (its worth the extra price for better ride), FOX or Bilstien for Shocks (again worth it for better ride, you will kick yourself if you don't. trust me I made the mistake). if you want any more advice, just get me here.

I Own a ‘92 Cherokee Laredo. Over 350K miles on it. Rebuilt engine from the ground up with main parts being remachined and honed in. Mostly all original parts throughout Chassis and Drive train. Really a total beast. I get just under 20 miles a gallon and I ride Wrangler MRT 33’s.
The XJ is absolutely an incredible machine. And would never trade mine in. Sell it. Or get rid of it.
Bought it off a gentleman that had no idea what he was doing mechanically. I brought it back and then some. Originally spent $1,000 and if i WERE to sell it. Which I won’t. I wouldn’t take less than $8,000 with everything I’ve done to it.
Hands down XJ all day. Not even a brand new 2019 Lamborghini would steal my heart and attention like the XJ does.

My mom had the 89 or 90 Cherokee Limited. Those 80s Cherokees were the first mainstream SUV. When I was in high school it seemed like every family had one if they didn't have a Suburban or Wagoneer. Eventually Ford came out with the Explorer and GM added 2 more doors to the S10 Blazer/S15 Jimmy (way late). My mom upgraded to 96 Grand Cherokee Limited. I'll be selling it as part of her estate soon. 109k miles, clean & always well maintained by Jeep. The XJ just has that classic look :D
But I am happy as hell with my 2017 6 banger KL TH.
Mind you it needs better than stock tires and rock sliders added to make it go a lot more places, but since I got those, I can go almost anywhere my local Wrangler Jeep club goes. I keep starting off with them asking me if I want to park it and ride the trail with them, and ending with "That little jeep can go anywhere". Only real weakness I have seen so far is the low clearance. Sliding into muddy deep ruts can hang this puppy up.
Dont underestimate these things :D But do get the rock sliders at the least.
They do have bugs in the computer though. Its not advised to use that door button to lock lol.

In my teen years, my mom had a '91 Cherokee Sport, which was basically a base model 2-door with the 4.0 High Output, 5-speed manual, 4wd (part-time only), and a temporary spare in the hatch. The badging was red and orange vinyl over black paint. Even at altitude (we lived at nearly 7,000 ft), it was definitely faster than the 11.8+ seconds tested here, so that automatic must have been a slug! It did have its share of problems though, including a failed clutch slave cylinder and one of the serpentine idler pullies failing, but nothing too costly to fix. Its fuel injection was also picky on good gas to keep the injectors clean, but most cars of that era were.

This is not hate mail! I have a 2003 Liberty Limited and I can only comment as to my own experience, but I haven't had any issues with it. I bought it new and it now has 175,000 miles. Everything is original other than brakes, tires and battery (+ ball joints replaced by a recall). It has a real transfer case and solid rear axle and seems pretty rugged. It still feels tight and solid, doesn't rattle over rough roads, goes great in the snow and has no noticeable wind noise. The exterior looks as it did when new (with one exception, see below) and the leather interior has held up beautifully. Only 2 negatives: fuel mileage is very poor (I get 15/17) and the rocker panels just ahead of the rear wheels are starting to rust. That said, I still enjoy it and it runs great. I know they have a reputation for being unreliable but I haven't experienced any problems. If you can find one that hasn't been trashed and beat up you might be surprised at how capable it is.

I had a '98 XJ Limited, '02 KJ Limited, '11 JKR, and now have a '19 KL Trailhawk. Obviously, the most capable off road was the JKR. However, the most comfortable and nicest to drive on road by far is the KL. It really depends on your needs. I have a SxS and a half ton truck to tow it to the trails, so my needs for this vehicle are a comfortable daily driver that I can easily park, and that can handle any inclement weather we get, as well as be able to handle the occasional gravel or dirt road. My XJ did these things, and so did my KJ, but my KL does them better in my opinion. I also like the look of the '19 KL, but unfortunately it does look a lot like everything else out there right now.

I'm only 7 minutes in but I was astonished at your comparison of horsepower and torque. 190hp/220t on the '91 is not far off the new numbers when you consider that the '19 has gained 1000 lbs. Plus pulling such impressive numbers from the modern 3.4 must correspond to some sort of decreased operational life. But I digress, I've honestly never looked at the new one since I found out it did not have solid axles AND had a transverse engine.

I leased a 2019 Cherokee last May. First Jeep I've ever owned and I like it. I do miss some of the features that my previous Fords have offered - like the keyless entry pad and being able to open and close the windows and sunroof with the key fob. However, I could not get a Ford Edge or Ford Escape at the payment I wanted without a lot more down. Plus they were both 4 cyl. and 2018 models where my Cherokee is a 2019 and a V6, which I much prefer. I have a lifetime average of 25.89 mpg with the Jeep and 26.82 mpg with my wife's 2016 Escape which has the 1.6 liter.

People must have had lemons, my 2004 Liberty was a Champ. Got pretty good gas mileage, did great in the snow and mud, oh and it was used.
Dodge replaced the engine when it blew up from the previous owners wear and tear and we got the V6 from the 2nd generation Liberty instead and it was fantastic. Still regret selling it to this day.

An interesting comparison! I actually loved my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee...it was the most comfortable and powerful vehicle I've ever owned. Based on my very positive and enjoyable experience with the older Grand Cherokee, when I got the redesigned 2014 Jeep Cherokee, I thought I had the best SUV for my needs yet again. It was a beautiful vehicle for sure, and quite comfortable as well. However, in the 2 years I had it, I experienced 3 stalls/non-starts, the last of which occurred while doing 65mph on a major highway. That incident could have had dire consequences, but fortunately I was able to maneuver through traffic while coasting to a stop on a small stretch of shoulder. It did restart, and I was able to continue driving, but my confidence level in this new Cherokee was rather depleted! The dealer couldn't find the problem, so they told me they just did a "software module update, with the hope that the issue was resolved". Obviously not the most comforting response, especially since it had done 2 non-startups prior to that! This experience forever changed my opinion of Jeep, and I, sadly, moved on to other SUVs.

As for which one I'd rather have. I have a 2015 Cherokee Trailhawk, I love everything about it except for Jeep "reliability", but that is something that hasn't changed since 1991. 90s Jeeps are typically giant piles of problems and my 2015 has had its fair share of warranty work. Your 91 is incredibly rare that most things are actually working, and some kid hasn't chopped the doors off.

  • @ElectricDanielBoone

The new Cherokee also has "Differential Brake Lock" technology, which TFL often does not talk about. This technology automatically applies the brake to any of the four tires losing traction, which allows the open diff to send power to the tire with traction. Even the non-Trailhawk models have this technology, which gives all the new Cherokees a virtual-locker front and rear.
I believe most late model rigs have DBL as it is part of the traction control system. I've seen it work on 2WD rigs, like the Dodge Magnum in the snow and mud. DBL seems to take a lot of power to make it most effective, so it works best with the low range of the Trailhawk.

My first car was a 95 Cherokee “Country” trim. Kept it 9 years and 100,000 miles. Really wish I still had it. At the time I didn’t know how good a vehicle it really was. I hope its still on the road somewhere. I didn’t know about that “power” trans button. Mine didn’t have that. Mine didn’t have the full time four wheel drive option either, just part time that would lock the front diff. But it did have a drivers side airbag. I remember The speakers in the rear were mounted on the roof in a speaker bar kind of thing.... I though that was pretty cool. Not sure if that was unique to the trim level

While the new one might perform better,(subjective for sure) I can’t see having as much fun in a 40k vehicle off road. Would not want to damage and probably expensive as heck to fix. Not to mention it looks like a Kia. I’d be embarrassed. Mabey im biased I had blast in my 86 camanchee back in the day. It was built like a tank that racked up almost 400k. Thirsty and underpowered but captured something so deep in my soul that it didn’t matter.

I'd happily pay far less for the XJ to take camping, and pay for more fuel. My 1997 ZJ will run better than 300 miles on one tank (17-ish gallon.) The cost of a new vehicle will never offset the poorer fuel economy of a used, older one.

I was 13 years at the time mom was stopped at a stop light and a guy in his big ol k5 blazer was going 40mph not paying attention and nailed us at 40mph. He was paying so little attention the police said that in the camera's it didn't even look like he attempted to slow down. Needless to say 15 years later I still have irreversible neck problems and migraines on a regular basis.

We test drove a Trail-hawk and commissioned a build on an XJ - we remain pleased with our choice
No you weren't too hard on the Liberty. A basic XJ has more ground clearance then a "Trail Rated" Liberty. However, the big loss was the solid front axel that gives the XJ additional flex.
The rear seat cushion can be easily removed on the XJ which increases it's storage capacity
Front Air bags: SRS, supplemental restraint systems, were originally intended to protect people who didn't wear their seat belts and only serve to violently push glasses into the face of the un-suspecting who do.

They can both tow about the same. He spouted out the vehicle weight and said the new one weighs more and tows 500lb less. It has a listed lower tow weight as a matter of law. Light trucks have cgvwr of less than 10000lb. Math has to add up to be legal. Both vehicles are however capable of about the same haul.
