I bought my 96 about a year ago because of my dads 96 I grew up in. I paid about 5k for my jeep, but it is a 4x4, 4 door, 4.0, 5 speed, with power windows, and no rust. I absolutely love my jeep, but I don't think these old cherokees are quite worth 16k. Increasing value for these things does make me happy that I got mine before the market spiked though.
Keep it brother. I ran a 93 xj until last year. It got hit in 97 in the back so rust developed pretty bad. Sold it for 650 in two hours. Bought a 2001 xj six months ago for 4500. Put 5 grand into it. Love it. It does have 2 loose wrist pins as per the dealership. Im keeping my fingers crossed. 189000 miles. Good luck with yours. Great year the 96.
People just like to buy and outfit the rigs. Most people don’t even use them. It’s an epidemic in north Florida haha. Oh well, whatever makes people happy I guess.

No it's not. It's a boat anchor. Slow, weak, prone to lots of issues like cracking heads, sensor failures, misfire issues, etc. They also leak oil like sieves and drink gas. I owned two of them, and I wouldn't go back EVER.
I had the carbeurated 4.2l variant in a AMC built J10. Good solid motor. Good for chrysler by taking the AMC block and tweaking everything to work well with fuel injection.
I have a '94 XJ Sport and every single week someone asks me if I want to sell it. I've been offered $10k for it, but I'm not even considering letting it go🔥
I was given a 96 RED Grand Cherokee Ltd with “Everything on it.” Only thing broken is the radio antenna. (I took care of the owner during the last 6 months of his life and this was my gift.) No dent, no rust AT ALL. The only thing is he put a new long block 318 in it in 2021, so it’s barely broken in: Just 90K miles on the odometer total. The only things I’ve had to replace are the battery and one taillight bulb. Won’t pass CA smog, so have to spend some money on it. Will then send it to my son in TX. Glad to know it’s worth something in the Classic Car market m.
I’ve got a 92’ Laredo XJ. I love it. It’s all original to. I bought it from the first owner of the vehicle and he took very good care of it. He was in bad health and just wanted it gone and I got it for $1000 with just 130,000 miles on it. Exactly one week after buying the jeep the guy I bought it from passed away. It was really heart breaking because I made a really good friend that day. And I promised to take him riding in that old jeep.
Congratulations. I bought two of them at auction 10 + years ago and sold both at a profit. They came from the local natural gas company and were used for driving around with a sniffer mounted to the front looking for gas leaks. Both were white without the company logo so I guess they didn't want anybody to know what they were using them for. Got them cheap because it was a very cold day, and nobody was interested in two plain vanilla jeeps. I had a heads up because I worked at the gas company at the time.
I've a 98 and I'll never sell it. It's tough, reliable, can go anywhere, has classic looks and it's basic. When it breaks I can fix it! More important, they ain't making any more of them...
@@officialWWM yea that is true. I was also thinking maybe getting a more economical car for travel or work. Since mine only gets 17 mpg. Maybe a cheap chevy sonic or something. Since they get around 45 mpg.
The market is recognizing just how good these were overall. They were compact, light, nimble, usable, good looking then and still good looking now. They are pretty comfortable.easy to repair. I would put them in the class with 1st generation Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, Type 1 VW Beetle, and Nissan 240z.
Same thing going on in the 4Runner market. Simple and rugged, good aftermarket mods and oem parts availability, relatively easy and affordable to work on, cool styling, highly capable vehicles. The older ones have a personality that modern ones lack.
We can disagree on the "cool looks" of the new 4Runners. I don't like the "bug eyed look" of the 4Runner and Taco's headlights. Nor do I like how their front grilles poke so far out.

I have both. 05 4runner and a 92 limited XJ. XJ all day and the xj is worth more. But it only has 80k on it and is slightly lifted. My wife drives the 4runner.

In 1999 I bought a 1987 Grand Wagoneer with 74,000 miles for $3,500. Today with that mileage it is worth $30,000 or more. New Mexico rust free. It's just supply and demand. All the new cars are not "real" 4WD with straight axles. Many want a Jeep that can get them home from the boonies without a computer problem. In ten years, the value will only increase.
Anyone remember what the Barret Jackson auction did to muscle car prices? Well, Bring a Trailer is doing the same thing to vehicle's such as the XJ. $$$
I bought a red 1989 cherokee pioneer with the strait six with around 150,000 on it and it has the all options transfer case, no rips in the interior, no broken glass and an aftermarket stereo for 800 bucks last summer. The blower Moyer just scraped out though.
It's simple. Demand. People are still buying and registering XJ's. The parts retail market can hardly keep up with these things. They're simple, affordable, and easy to repair. What helps both the market and owner, is that you can interchange parts across many other models and some with slight modification. For less than $30k, an XJ can be anything you want it to be. People are smart, and not buying a $40k Rubicon when they can achieve the same functionality for alot less. Then you have money left over to actually live and enjoy your vehicle.
I have owned 3 XJs since 1996. I currently have a 98 with 120k on the clock. Great for commuting in the Montana snow or off-roading Glacier national park in the summer.
I'm the second owner of a '93 Cherokee XJ 4.0L 5-speed with just over 153k miles. Uncut, zero mods, bone stock. No interest in selling. It's a great back-up vehicle for my wife and kids. Mostly it just sits in the spare garage space and gets prettier by the day.
Bought my 99 a couple years ago for 6k. California jeep with no rust. Just spent a weekend on the Mojave preserve with a 50k Lexus GX650 and I out wheeled him every where. Crept up some old crazy mine roads with open diffs with no problems. Think the fact the that the price of a new Rubicon is so ridiculous is what's sending people to look for for budget friendly 4x4s? With some better axles and lockers, I'd put my little xj up against a fancy Ruby any day.
I was blown away at the capability off-road and outright abuse these things took as I put my parents stock XJ through its paces in the backcountry around Vancouver, Canada as a kid. Even had to have my Dad pull me out of a tough spot in my 76 FJ40 one time. Solid, comfortable, reliable and very capable. Considering today’s inflated vehicle prices, it’s only natural that such a great little 4x4 would be going for higher prices.
PSA to automakers: Roof pillars don't need to be humongous in order to provide a strong structure. It's called 1.5 to 2" DOM tubing and some gussets. Outward visibility and driving positions suck in almost all modern crossovers. The Renegade has roughly 7 inch wide A pillars. I think most people gravitate toward trucks for this reason.

I've only been into XJs for about a year now. I'm in Midwest and I'll see a good Cherokee for $3000-4500 quite often but they sell within a week or less. You gotta be ready to buy and have the cash on hand when that deal comes around.
I have a 1993 XJ Sport I bought for $3000. I have put 171000 miles on it in 14 years and put maybe 4000 in repairs. I keep it because it's cheaper to maintain than anything I've ever owned. It only has 295000 so if it don't get wreaked it should last at lest another few hundred thousand. It's still my daily driver. I pull my camper with it and take trips where and when I want. It's always ready to go.
I have had 3 Rangers ‘83, ‘97 and now a ‘19 crew cab. All of those trucks have (had) their pluses. That said the older Rangers right now only have the ability to scrape the side of it along a wall or tree and not have the guilty feeling of having done that. And yes I worked on plenty of the ‘98 and newer in my days at a Ford/Jeep/Isuzu/Saab dealer and couldn’t justify the ride torsion bars gave the truck. But yes there is tremendous value in the older stock of trucks still out there and with the aftermarket scene there is no reason to buy an overpriced Jeep.
I still miss my '95 XJ every single day. We sold it to my dad's friend back in 2012 for $2,500. It was pristine and had 77k on the odometer. Best vehicle I have ever owned. BY FAR
These old jeeps bring back such good memories, reliable, simple, affordable. I have a 90 renix 2 door that is rust free and a 99 4 door. I picked the 2 door up for 1700 in 2018 and I refuse to drive it in the salt to keep it in it's good condition
This was the most mass produced suv of all time. 3 million were made, and there are a lot still left. They are AWESOME and I have owned many, but paying anywhere near this type of money for one is outrageous. You can thank bring a trailer for inflating the market.
Yup, i am inclined to say, we have You Tube to thank. Channels such as (mentioned) Matt's off-road recovery make public the pluses of the Cherokee Jeep. With such off-the-cuff endorsements why would anyone looking for a used 4 wheel drive not put a Cherokee near the top of their list. Proven performance = value.
Yeah, for sure. I love my XJ-- don't get me wrong-- but I always saw them as unremarkable suburban mall crawlers. But now they look old skool compared to the new FIATs...
I bought one in June of this year. 97 Cherokee sport 4 door, 4.0, auto, it has all the options on it. One owner and it has 28000 miles on it, never been off the road. it was driving in bad weather here in Indiana. I had to replace some parts to get road ready. Now I drive it all the time. Love it.
i bought an 87 for $1400 last october and since then ive gotten cash offers at gas stations for as little as 3500 and as much as 8000. might take the offer and get something more efficient.
I think it has a lot to do with nostalgia. I’m 42 and I already miss the old days! The old days for a gen X’r like me is the 80’s and 90’s. I had an XJ back then as well. Unfortunately flippers have taken notice and that had driven prices up as well. On BAT, they are almost always “acquired” less than a year ago and it’s usually “from the family of the original owner”, blaw blaw yeah right. If you really want one, keep your eyes peeled and scan Craigslist. I’d stay away from the rust belt though.
remember people, just cause people are listing there vehicle for an incredibly high price does not mean they will be able to sell it for that much.. but at 5:21 is a 1992 jeep cherokee laredo 4x4 sold for $16,250 and the msrp in 1992 was $16,842 .!. and the more that are scraped the more the value goes up
Why would the prices ever come down? The supply fixed (technically diminishing). Not to mention they were a top 10 car that was crushed during Cash for Clunkers, so likely over 100,000 units crushed. I would estimate somewhere between only 25% to 50% of the original supply still on the road and very, very few without rust and sub 200k miles. So maybe 5% of the original production numbers are desirable? Of course the prices are rising.
Now I'm starting to feel really good about $1500 for a 99 deep purple stock XJ with 130k miles. I was going to lift it, but now I'm thinking about just fixing it up in stock form and daily drive it. The motor is great in this thing. And it's a monster in the snow here in west michigan.
Bought my 99 Cherokee sport three years ago for $ 5k 135k miles ...super clean...everything works ...added BSE 3" lift...new leafs and coils to...30.5" AT tires...no rust ..I love it ...I call it my sand toy ...drive it on the beach allot
just like Foxbody Mustangs. they were millions made. they wound up in trailer parks where they got absolutely trashed and many of them went to the scrapyard. suddenly overnight, people realized there arent that many nice ones left
I'm really regretting selling my 1997 Cherokee Sport. I'm currently living in Japan and I've seen a decent amount of XJs here! It just makes me miss mine even more!
I live in Japan as well and have an 87 Wagoneer 4.0. back in the states. Have thought about shipping it to Japan. I used to get people asking me all the time if I wanted to sell it but not sure whether to keep or sell. Your right, Ive seen a few clean ones here in Tokyo.
I own a 95zj - got it ears back to haul my Kayak and fishing trips: parts are cheap(Rock Auto) , and my mechanic works with me. The straight six with 150,000 runs great, I decided to keep it and just installed a new A/C, stereo & speakers. Its really nice and does the job. So, I'm starting some basic body work (peeling paint) and making sure I don't get corrosion. This vehicle does the job for me, and I really enjoy it. The big thing - it is not expensive to keep running.
2 door models are way nicer since the cherokee was originally designed that way. They just look great and classic. I own a 98, 2 door, 5 speed, 2wd chilly pepper red and i love it
I had a '97 2 door 4x4 5 speed in red about 8 years ago. Bought it for $2800 in 2012. The 5th gear synchro was starting to howl & it had 173K on it, but it ran smoothly, didn't smoke or run warm and passed California's stringent smog test with ease. The interior was in fantastic condition and other than a slight ding in the left front fender, the body was excellent. Should never had sold it 8 months later for $2K ☹
@@erreruz I totally screwed up....😐 The darn thing was so useful and was decent on fuel(about 21 mpg daily driven). At least the guy I sold it to went cross country about 20 times before he got busted and had the Jeep impounded. I hope someone bought it and is now enjoying it... The later Cherokees are better IMO. The engine was upgraded to 190hp, 4 wheel ABS was added & the interior was nicely upgraded. You can comfortably drive a '97+ Cherokee in everyday traffic these days without an issue. Cheers buddy!!
Oh, yeah! They're worth all that and more. Of course, I may be a bit biased. I am an old codger and the original owner of a '99 XJ 4.0, less than 82,000 miles, all original except the driver's side door lock actuator, batteries, and tires. Well cared for, no rust, no wrecks, no problems. However, it was the vehicle my late wife and I enjoyed together, so I'll never let go of it. Maybe you can get it from my estate after I've bought the farm.
I would say that 99% of Cherokees out there aren’t worth the crazy money. However, really clean older ones might be because of how rare nice ones actually are. Most have been beat to heck. So if you are a collector and you find a really nice one I can kind of understand paying a good chunk of cash for one. For the average ones though, there’s no way they are worth more than 4 or 5 grand.
My grandma has a 1999. Completly stock and has never seen a dirt road. Needles to say that she nsnnys it a lot. Not even sure if it has going over 60mph in the last few years. Good on or off road, simple to work on, parts are relatively cheap, very low maintenance, what more can you ask for. They out last every 4WD out there with good maintenance.
I had an 89 XJ Laredo 2 door with turbine wheels and pop out windows for 2 years. Then a 99 XJ Sport bought new until 2012. 220,000 miles on the clock. replaced the head gasket (my fault), several radiators, 2 batteries, 3 sets of tires and 3 steering shocks, maybe a set of front u joints. Traded it on a 2012 Ford Escape Limited. It was in decent shape but needed work. The dealership gave me about $1600. It was off the lot within a week. That vehicle got me through some tough times and provided a lot of utility. I don't really miss it as my Escape was like driving a low end luxury vehicle. But it was reliable and you couldn't kill it. I'm sure 8 years later it's still rolling around somewhere.
I absolutely loved my special order XJ that was a Two door, five speed, trac-lock rear dif and vinyl interior (easier to clean off-road dirt ). I am really surprised that the market, except for the new Bronco/4 runner, haven’t noticed the draw of a basic, mid size true 4WD truck that is affordable to a large segment. Current Cherokee is in a stop production mode because of a glut that is not moving, take a clue FCA.
I agree. They should have stuck with the simplisity of the original Cherokee but they got greedy. Ford proved that there is still a market for simple when they came out with the Maverick truck.
The 4.0 is super reliable. These things are almost as rugged as the Wrangler. What’s not to love. It seems like the price has increased in just the last 2 years. A few years ago these things were dirt cheap on Craigslist. A lot of them were destroyed in cash for clunkers. That’s probably one of the reasons these things are a lot more expensive now. In my area, a clean unmodded XJ goes for 6-8 grand. There’s a guy on TH-cam called Matt’s towing and recovery that uses a yellow xj for trail recoveries in Utah.
things that are over priced : 3rd gen 4 runner from 97-2002 , tj wrangler not in pristine shape, new gladiator, fiat renegade trailhawk, getting married/ having a wife.
I have a 2000 XJ Sport. Bone stock, no mods (yet ;)). It was totaled in an accident in 2016. I replaced the pass. side fender, front axle, and bumper end cap. Got the rebuild certificate, and was recently offered $7800 for it.
They are very reliable, solid and capable vehicles that are easy to work on. New vehicles have gotten stupid expensive and often require specialized tools and knowledge to work on.
LOVE my 2000 XJ classic. Second owner. Amazing in snow and off-road. TONS of mods available. Beast of an engine in 4.0L V6. It's light, tows everything. Decent gas mileage. Easy to DIY fix and maintain. Back seat easily pops out and clicks back in for full cargo space. Roof bars slide. Parts are cheap and easy to find. Only flaw I have found is wonky tape deck and wobbly center console. Otherwise, it's such a great vehicle. Mine is 95% stock and it's perfect.
Great video! Very factual. I bought my 98 XJ stock for $1,000. Probably have an additional $10,000 in it. But it's still just a high mileage, well built, 22 year old 4x4. Love my XJ! Can't deny that it's been a financial mistake for me.

It’s the damn overland scene driving up all the prices of 4x4’s.
That's more than likely the biggest reason
Over landing is better the all the buggies everyone used to make
People just like to buy and outfit the rigs. Most people don’t even use them. It’s an epidemic in north Florida haha. Oh well, whatever makes people happy I guess.
And as overlanding/bugout vehicles
Yeah I really hope that fad fades out, so prices drop all around the scene.
The 4.0L is the best engine Jeep has ever made....
Even to argue one of the top engines ever made. Bulletproof
The 4.0 litre H.O is the last great American engine. A final chapter to 20th century AMERICAN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE. My work truck is a bow tie, the daily is a slightly neglected 00 Cherokee sport. Restoring as I go. Love this thing! Get one before prices soar.
No it's not. It's a boat anchor. Slow, weak, prone to lots of issues like cracking heads, sensor failures, misfire issues, etc. They also leak oil like sieves and drink gas. I owned two of them, and I wouldn't go back EVER.

Good, keep it..don't give in,10,000 bucks will soon disappear. I'm from UK have had a 2000 XJ for 22 years. I will never sell it.
I was given a 96 RED Grand Cherokee Ltd with “Everything on it.” Only thing broken is the radio antenna. (I took care of the owner during the last 6 months of his life and this was my gift.)
No dent, no rust AT ALL.
That’s because the new ones are less capable, way more unreliable and incredibly more expensive.
New ones have a lot of Chinese components. XJ is the way.
I've always thought they were beautiful. I'm not surprised that the price has gone up so much. They are truly iconic.
Just bought one rust free yesterday!
More important, they ain't making any more of them...
i have a 93. im never getting rid of it too. i want to still have it when i have grand kids.(im 18 now). hopefully its my only car.

Plus older ones don't have the slew of overly complicated electronic bullshit jammed into them that can break and your can only take to the dealer.

Not in my area. About 3 years ago that was the case but they seem to have flip flopped lately.
I had a 4 runner a 2000 limited with the first style diff lock, it absolutely sucked in snow, absolutely reliable also, had over heating issues snow would pack up underneath the front with it in deep snow plowing around and yes deep as it could take without truly dogging it harshly, would cake up harshly in the grill area under neath, a stock xj with some decent all terrains and it pushes thru snow and just plows thru end of story , ending all is good under hood, then no overheating issues..👍, and that's the honest truth, they are amazing in the snow if drivin correctly...,
I agree, a simple fb marketplace search has tons of them under 2000, and many under 1000.

The reason they are selling for this outlandish price is that there's been 500000 of them parted out and scrapped in the last 5 years
I agree with that. As years go by, many vehicle are appreciating fast. The less good ones left make them more valuable.

Nobody ever believes me when I tell them what kind of mileage I get out of my '99 with the AX15.. Basic maintenance, and a few modern upgrades to the injection components yields atleast 500 miles out of a tank. I refill at a 1/4, but I'm positive it could not be done with the AW4.

Back in ‘08, I traded my ‘91 Cherokee Sport in on a Commander for $1,000. I wish I still had that little Jeep. 😕
Ouch.

It only has 295000 so if it don't get wreaked it should last at lest another few hundred thousand. It's still my daily driver. I pull my camper with it and take trips where and when I want. It's always ready to go.
We can thank Fiat for the old Jeep prices surging. And the quality and safety ratings not lining up with the new Jeep price tags.

5 speed is a rare option
Yup think like 10 in every thou were 2 dr. And maybe 2 of the 10 were 4X4's. Talk about collector rare!
Of course the prices are rising.
these XJ's will be future classics. one day you'll be seeing them 50K or more for an original clean one.

Yeah but hard to put a price on fun on the trails with a hardy reliable 4X4.

Did a semi restoration, it was one of the cleanest XJ examples through the entire metro Detroit. Got tons of compliments when filling up the tank. Sold it for 10k. That was last January of 2019. Now I'm in search of another...
Got one sitting in the garage. Red and all stock 👍
I have a 2001 with 234k that my grandpa had for his last car and I have been restoring and fixing it up. I love my XJ and cant wait to finish up grading and restoring it.
Have fun and congrat's. You will have a rare legend.
You forgot kids in that list.
Got mine a year or two ago for 1200. 250,000 miles, a little rust, and a few dents but it runs perfect and has never let me down
I wish I bought one a few years ago. One of my favorite cars ever
I have a 2000 XJ Sport. Bone stock, no mods (yet ;)). It was totaled in an accident in 2016. I replaced the pass. side fender, front axle, and bumper end cap. Got the rebuild certificate, and was recently offered $7800 for it.
I’m so glad I bought mine 3 years ago because prices have gone way up since then.
same! got mine for cheap from a soccer dad. phew!
They are very reliable, solid and capable vehicles that are easy to work on. New vehicles have gotten stupid expensive and often require specialized tools and knowledge to work on.
All these xj’s going for over 9k and my dad can’t sell his fully built one in fairly good shape for 5k...
Throw a picture up here or in a forum and the offers will have your head spinning.
