In 1879 the government opened a sanatorium at ###### ####### New Zealand. European settlers had been using the thermal pools since 1859 although Māori had long used them.[3] In 1889 a reserve was created around the pools.[3] The sanatorium building was destroyed by fire in 1914.[3] Duncan Rutherford, a local sheep farmer, offered the use of The Lodge Hotel for convalescent soldiers while a new building was constructed.[3][4][5] In 1915 plans were drawn up for a hospital to accommodate 200 servicemen returning from World War I who needed rehabilitation for mental and nervous conditions, particularly shell-shock.[6][7] The first hospital building was the Soldiers' Block[3] which was opened on 3 June 1916 by G.W. Russell, the Minister of Public Health and Hospitals.[8][9] The full name of the hospital was ##### #### Hospital for Sick and Wounded Soldiers.[7]
1922 to the 1980s Edit
The hospital was run by the military until 1922 when it was passed to the Department of Health.[3][10] The name of the hospital became ##### #### Hospital.[11] A women's ward (Chisholm Block) opened in 1926 and another men's ward (Rutherford Block) in the 1940s.[6]
By the late 1960s most patients had alcoholism or addictions.[3] In the early 1970s ##### #### became the national hospital for the treatment of addictions, taking patients from all over the country who were referred by their general practitioner.[12]: 33-34 It was administered by the North ########## Hospital Board but funded by the Department of Health.[3] Specialist treatment for addictions was lacking in many other psychiatric hospitals and ##### #### was the only hospital offering therapies for addicts and alcoholics.[12]: 33-34

I know where this is its an hour drive from me. I've visited this place and I felt it was haunted

@@TheForsakenExplorerNz i yep just thought id ask somone that looked like you was there and his partner would visit there were clients sniffing petrol laced with purfume a disco got held one client got caught rooting at that disco the cops got called because they were smoking dak and the whole ward of decent looking chicks got taken to another ward because of that incident. A lot more went on within a very short period glad i was not involved or blamed for any of it even though my treatment plan was pretty messed up for things id never done. still a corupt system to this day just not quite as bad or just more sneakey probably the second one'

Can you suggest any areas of interest close to Hamilton for folks with limited mobility? (no three hour tramps through virgin scrub etc). You have inspired us. Any ideas welcome... Did you get into any of the other buildings while you were there? That place is fkn massive. I remember seeing some real creepy looking wash rooms and kitchens that would've been cool to get a closer look at..
Unfortunately the rest are all alarmed and has 24/7 Security
