Larry Creek A 6 km (3.7 mi) forestry road runs north of the river from SH69 to Larrys Creek Track, which runs a further 2.4 km (1.5 mi) to the site of the Caledonian Gold Mine.[7] The mine operated from 1874 to 1910, with shafts up to 285 ft (87 m) deep.[8] It is the most northerly in the Reefton goldfield, in albite-epidote hornfels facies, which are less than 370 million years old.[9] Remnant...

Was on the market for many years until it fell into Abandonment and a state of disrepair, this historic building known as the "Stables" was originally built in the late 1800s by the well known businessman A J White to house his horses, and with a hay loft on the upper floor. Converted in the 1950s into three flats. We believe it went on the market as it would'nt have met the requirements for th...

Seddonville was named after Prime Minister of New Zealand Richard Seddon. It was established in the late 19th century as a mining community after the discovery of significant coal reserves in the area. Several mines nearby opened, with varying degrees of success,[7] until the last one closed in 1986, due to having up to 6% sulphur in its coal.[8] Coal was first discovered in 1862,[9] when the N...

Blackball was a centre of New Zealand radicalism and workers' militancy. It is credited as the birthplace of (the predecessors of) the New Zealand Labour Party, which followed the 1908 miners 'cribtime' strike, at ten weeks the longest in New Zealand history.[3] In the 1913 Great Strike, Blackball miners were the last to return to work, in 1914. The Ross Goldfields Information & Heritage Centre is located at the southern end of Aylmer Street and is the one-stop spot for gold mining history and regional information. You can hire or buy a gold pan and head up to the DOC fossicking area at Jones Creek, where gold was first discovered in 1865, and the odd flecks are still uncovered today. Or, if time is short or the weather wet, you can pa...

Wow that's great. I was over there a round 1970/ 1980. We walked the old tram line. At the time we were with a guy who drove the little train used on the line back after the war. Is there any more information available about the old mines .

I always find it sad that 99% of these abandoned relics are maintained. They are vital windows into the history of NZ. The country owes so much to the pioneers and gold miners who opened up the country. Without them the country would be nothing. Its a disgrace that they are simply left to rot. Before long they will be gone forever

My family came from England and Scotland early 1900s to coal mine in Millerton. The Eastons and the Ross family. My great grandfather David Ross Senior went missing in the 30s up there his body never found. Sad for great granny who had already lost her 23yr old son to ww1. Lots of those Millerton and Westport families who worked in these mines lost their young men to that stupid war

This brings back memories bro thank you so much. This is the West Wing where I stayed in Cell 25 from February to July of 2015 when it finally closed and I was about to be released. Last 20 Weeks of great memories. The Chow room with the paintings had many cool functions where we use to practice our haka for a powhiri. The Kitchen dining room where we shared church on Sundays and study courses. The naughty room was the Gym room filled with a Bike, Rowing machine and a bench press workout machine. The door hanging off its hinges was the Laundry room. The Recreational pool room was cool. Playing Touch Footy almost everyday was classic. Miss those days. First time seeing snow

Thank you for your video I have visited waiuta before all the wire fences were put in place to stop people getting in trouble Wiauta means inland river invented by NZ post There were two mine shafts too mine the 1.5 million tons of gold bearing quartz reef about 800 meters below the town at 1951, price of $40 a ounce (750,000,ounce of gold) On the 9 of July 1951, the older mine shaft, which supplies electricity venterlation and drain pumps for the main mine shaft, collapsed. Party over the world was a different place , There is still gold their and at $2500 a ounce, it will start all over again

One of the craziest things associated with that place that I know of is a kind of dare people would do at the far end of the subway where the trains would cross the river just before entering the tunnel. At the point where the train tracks went from being a bridge to solid ground there was a gap under the tracks! This gap was just wide enough to fit under which you would climb into just before a train came, crazily stupid huh? Well, here's the kicker you did all this whilst tripping on magic mushrooms!
