    I think this is the perfect use for AI art in game dev. I'm not an artist myself but I think when I finally decide to learn art, this is how I'd want to use AI to create the art for any future projects of mine. Also, I really love the style you chose. Your NPC looks great. Looking forward to seeing more of your game's characters!

    I'm honestly having a similar situation. I tried to write an AI how generates a lot of boring nearly monotone code for my engine and game.
    In the end this is a faster and more interesting solution as to write nearly the same over and over again.
    So yeah I totally get you. I think AI's are fine for boosting stuff like that, still I'm sorry for the hand-working artist out there.

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think for code the situation is quite different, and it can be really useful for simple monotone code. It's not like programmers hone their unique coding style for decades to be distinct from everyone else. 😅

    I think using ai as a reference is fine but not for concept art. I think the creator should pick and choose what aspects of each design they like and make something that is their own out of it.

    The chibis are so awesome. How did the fishing go, how is there no picture of fish in the whole video?! :P
    Btw, have you joined on the twitter and reddit the weekly posts, shares, retweets of screenshot saturday and the tuesday thingy and such with your project?
    Also, I'm not sure if anyone has told you but you have a cat on your head and it has its claws in your scalp. Feisty cat?
    EDIT: Ever tried the AI for voices? It seems it has improved quite a bit and can now basically make virtual voice-actors.

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! :D The fishing was GREAT! But the video was almost done, so I saved it for the next devlog. :D
      I still havent done anything on Twitter or Reddit, but I really need to get to it. 😅 Lot's of things to juggle. First, I finally want to open the discord server.
      I tried AI voices a while back and while they are good, I didnt like them too much. And it's also the question of which voices to use. I still would have to record someone. Paying a voice actor for a couple of sentences and then generating the rest seems... a bit wrong. 😅 Doing it like in the video is also much more time efficient. How do you like the dialogue audio?

    Everyone always talks about AI art, but what are your views on using things like Copilot and GPT to aid with the programming aspect?
    (also, I don't know how trigger happy youtube can be, but the artstation part at 0:45 contained some "human anatomy" that they might not like)

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only ever played a bit with ChatGPT, and there I am very sceptical of the capabilities. I think it can be quite helpful in creating simple stand-alone scripts (e.g. fading a sprite to transparent, adding a bouncing motion, etc.), but it makes mistakes. One has to be able to notice the mistakes and then ask for fixes and I think in the end I'm just faster doing it by myself. I think it's mostly useful of getting a good idea how to approach a simple script in general. I don't find it useful for larger code structures, that are more custom.
      Seeing how it handles logical problems like proofs in math, where it comes across so convincing and is so so wrong, I don't trust it enough with my code haha.
      Thanks a lot for pointing out the anatomy! I'll see if it's possible to edit it out, just to be safe!

  • @ccart2343
    @ccart2343 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing that has not been mentioned about using AI art in your project and launching on steam is the legality of it. Steam does remove games that use AI art, if you can't proof that you hold all the rights to the art the AI has been trained on for your generated pictures. Which nobody probably has.. and since Valve for example doesn't want to get railed by a class action lawsuit in the future they remove games where they figure out AI art is in use .. they don't get all games currently but remove them one by one .. at least for now.

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point to bring up! I didn't know Steam removes games with AI art. But yeah, the question of legality is also why I use AI as a reference at best and paint my art myself still.

    Awesome! How long have you been using Unity and do you have any formal experience? A lot of devlogs have people twisting themselves in knots explaining their struggles with unity and with code, but you seem to be confident with it and just explain what you're doing and get back to the good stuff.
    Also your NPC is great. If you've read the Wheel of Time novels by Robert Jordan, reminds me of Nynaeve

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!! I had a little bit experience with Unity before starting from a student project a long time ago, but have to learn a lot now. But I have lots of experience implementing more complicated systems (physical simulations). That helps a lot keeping code modular and not getting tangled up so much.
      But maybe my confidence will turn out to be misguided overconfidence once I have a lot more things in the game. 😅 Who knows what difficulties I overlooked so far.
      Ahh, I started reading Wheel of Time, but for some reason stopped after a few chapters and forgot about it. 😵 Need to get back to it sometime.

    Nice video and good job on setting up the steam page!
    The whole AI discussion is really polarizing. The option to generate individual things you need is super great for smaller projects e.g. indie games and there's clearly a demand considering the amount of games that use the same asset packs for icons etc.
    The scary part comes when big corporations get involved and not only substitute artists but also push out the smaller creators.
    And that's not even talking about the ethics of using people's art without permission.
    I really hope that both sides can get to an agreement and symbiotic relationship at some point (like you used the AI art as inspiration to create your own interpretation).

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I agree with you and I really hope so too. It would be great if AI can be established without killing small creators. 🤞🏻

  • @dorestheo5314
    @dorestheo5314 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with most of the sections that say what AI companies do is theft and harms the artists works.
    but I don't think using AI drawings just as a reference can be consider fair,
    for example, if people ask me where my drawings is inspired from, I can answer that is inspired from work by this or that artist.
    AI imitates drawing from real artists, but you don't know who they are, so instead of giving the credit to those artists whose work has been stolen by AI, instead you can only give the credit to that AI 😑

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is actually a great point, I haven't thought of that. Especially when there is a larger influence by one or two artists, it is great to be able to name that influence. Thanks for sharing your view!

  • @KumoKumori
    @KumoKumori ปีที่แล้ว

    This character looks very cool and your art is gorgeous, but I think you should consider tweaking some of her features because she looks very white despite her skin.
    The light untextured hair and blue eyes are very white traits, and while that's not inherently bad it feeds into racist tropes of giving black women typically white traits to "make them more beautiful and interesting," with the implication that they couldn't be with their natural features.
    I don't think this is purposeful, but part of having a truly diverse cast is embracing what makes them different

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks a lot for the feedback! I agree that she looks very white despite her dark skin. I was a bit worried about these things too when working on her. I want to have very diverse characters, since it's space in the future, not Europe in the future. I have a lot more characters planned out, including a lot of clearly not-white people. For her though, my reasoning was that I wanted her to have a witchy look instead, with very unnatural hair/eyes. But maybe I could have achieved that differently. Thanks a lot, I'll keep it in mind and maybe change her once I have all the characters done.

    I feel like you're getting started too early with localization. 99% of projects started don't finish, so all that extra time you take working on localization is time better spent on getting a vertical slice to players to find out what's working and what isn't. I know its easy to stand up a localization system - I can stand one up in an hour, but the annoying part is how much time you waste per text you add into your game, and you will end up scrapping things and having to remove things from localization. It just adds complexity to adding any UI in the future that you shouldn't worry about.
    The actual hard part of localization is making your UI work with languages that are verbose like German or tiny like Chinese, and you want to do that work all at the end.
    That being said if you're building a NPC dialogue system then make it easy to hook in a localization system later, but don't worry about using it until you on your way to releasing the game.

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks again for sharing feedback, always appreciate it! :) Yeah, I'm not doing all the translations or UI optimizations now, just setting up the system so it will be very easy to do the localization work in the end. I agree it's important to focus on the vertical slice, so I'm only doing the stuff that I know I will need in any kind of game this turns out to be, and that are highly unlikely to be scapped. Thanks for reminding me to stay focused. :D

    i use AI to brainstorm,it is very useful,the thing is: people are crazy because AI is more powerful,has more flexibility and helps more,but AI is here since what? PS1,Snes?? since web started if you think wisely...
    But its a tool,a tool that we need to use wisely like photoshop is a tool,simple as that.
    i see much potential in using it because for example, i use for brainstorm because when i can't see an detail,it helps me to see on another pespective,to look where i wasnt looking, i don't have friends to help me develop,i have only one best friend that is my brother and he helps me alot but even 2 minds can sometimes don't see what an AI can see and helps you. so that is why i use for it,but it can help in many ways and Indie Dev needs all the help and no indies too, time is an need no one can recover and no one have but everyone can lost easily,so to ''save time'' and help you archieve your desired dream a little bit more fast,a little bit less complicated,AI is here for this.
    Why model an 3d model that many people did when 3D started to grow as developer tool? why photoshop an image background that many did back when photoshop was launched? why not archieve all this instantly so you can focus on programming your game that is an hard job to be done to conquer a simple attack movement,an simple grab movement and system? that is why we need AI,we don't have to blame,we have to use,its a tool!
    So one advice i have to help on this process, always stop and think what you really wanted on start of all brainstorm,because this counts much, i get myself almost copying the AI art and stop,think about what i wanted on start,what is the feeling my character needs to transmit,what i really wanted about it and the atmosphere it shows or have around hin, so if you lost the main idea you lost all and copy all, if you always have the main idea,you use AI art to guide not to be copied,that is the main difference on ''how to use AI art properly'' and not ''copy AI art''
    I am very bad on image monsters, so i will use AI to help me on that... and on other hand im very good imagining enviroments,that is why i love so much AI advancement because im good on something and wrost on another,why not have an AI to help me? it also teachs me,it motivate me as well.
    Nowadays its a Bless,really..stop and think: im starting developing an game that many people started 30 years ago...ok i have no knowledge compared to someone who works 30years on this. what better than have this ''Bless'' to help me?
    That is why i keep my idea about AI and love AI art generation,it is something unexpected for me even had thinked about it past time ago...but never realized it was possible on this ''dimension''
    Imagine what was the game without AI? without NPCs? Honestly AI on art generation is something like 3D software,an programmer wants to make Art,he developed an software to ''imitate'' the artist,then borned the 3D art software,the 2D art software.
    On other hand we have zbrush and brilliant software maded by artists in contact with programmers,its brilliant and one of the best sculpt tool,the interface is very intuitive and i prefer more than an 3dsmax or maya...they don't need to go on sub-menus, sub-menus is for programmers >D
    anyways i don't hate programmers, both sides think on their ways but we need advancement on both sides..
    sorry for throw all this...
    THank you for show us your amazing game i am cheering up here and following your game because its cute,its incredible, im still learning about it but you show me what i can do,what i can possible archieve on mine as well. mine will be about dungeon,i love dungeon :D
    But i love harvest and see an game better than harvest moon bringing me memories of Harvest moon BTN is something incredible.
    Thank you and please keep pursuing your dream
