I pitched my game at GDC and won! [Kohlrabi Starship Devlog #8]
Hi everyone! I went to GDC to find a publisher and pitch my game. This video is all about that journey! :D
I'm a VTuber developing my very first indie game Kohlrabi Starship: a cozy 2D farming game with space travel, in which you revive ecosystems, find love, and explore the galaxy. I always loved playing games like Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley, and now I want to create my own take on that genre. Will I make it or fail miserably? :) Thank you so much for watching!

Godot 4, just happens to be simpler on all levels.
What an amazing experience that must have been, thank you for the breakdown of your pitch deck, that was really helpful!!! Best of luck with all the publisher correspondence, and with development! Your game is so charming and original, and I'm so excited to see it's progress!!
That's wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
uhh, what a surprise to have your game shown to me by the YT algorithm. see you at the game hub =)
Nice, good luck! Next year I'm gonna force my company to pay for my trip to GDC so I can finally go, lol
way to go!!
Godot gang <3
Cool devlog, hope to go to GDC with my game one day too
Thank you for the very informative video
Congratulations! Art looks nice, and the concept sounds really good. I'm gonna use all your advice since I'm attending Gamescom Latam in about two weeks with my project. I wish you the very best with all.
Good luck!!
Very cool! I wish you all the luck 😊
It's amazing how you went to gdc with the vtuber mask :o
Haha, it's my true self! :D
Congratulations!
Kohlrabi Starship looks amazing so far, congrats for your progress!
Sounds like you had quite the adventure! Congrats on winning GDC and landing some hot leads! The art of the first slide of the Pitch Deck is so adorable. I love that she is wearing the astronaut's helmet. She should make him a helmet out of that pumpkin behind him. 😆
A pumpkin astronaut helmet is such a sweet idea!
Why did they give you a bat for pitching instead of a glove??? I'd say you got ripped off!
Good question! I don't play baseball, so I never even realized xD haha
cuz she "knocked it out of the park" ;)
Congrats !!!
Sockfish! ❤
My deepest regrets that I didn't include a single fish in this video... xD
@@wolkadev I actually replied with a fish emote since I accepted your offering of the fish in a sock :D But I can see how you could take it the other way so, my mistake!
you are so brave!
i'm very expected to play ! 😍
It was great to meet you at GDC! Thanks for giving some insight into all the prep work you did - a lot more than I realized. Hope you're able to find the perfect publishing partner!
Thank you for watching and coming by my booth!! It was great talking to you! :D If I find a publisher, there will definitely be another video about it! :)
whoa! both of you have me! I follow both of your videos!
Welcome to the godot cult
fantastic work! If you need music for the gameplay or to promote the game (trailer), let me know.🤗👌🏻😁🎮🤗🎶
Hello! Did you stopped ?? Im about 2 weeks playing an game called eastward, octopia is the dlc name, the dlc is all about farm and i recall your game. I wish you keep on it, you are very brilliant and intelligent, honestly i couldnt do the same on programming and planning. I really hope you keep making it because it is on my list of best and cozy indie games but als if there is an discord to keep updated i will love to know 🎉😊 I personally couldnt keep on my 3d project, so i stopped and i plan do something that only one person can handle,i am still thinkimg about do an rpg maker game by the way but the only issue is the the 4:3 size of output image. Anyways... thank you and God bless you on this journey
Hi! I didn't stop, still working hard on the game!!!! :D There is just a lot to juggle at the moment, so I am a bit late with making new TH-cam videos. You can follow the journey on Discord too: discord.gg/NcACfnbXh7 Good luck to you too with your game! :)
Sorry, i did not checked the discord, i am happy that you keep going with your amazing game😊 Thank you
You've made the right choice!
So, is a "Vertical Slice" in a game development an MVP in startup terms? 🤔
Yeah, I think you could say so
Even though Godot is free but the education is not free for godot site..
Hi! All the resources for Godot like its documentation and also a lot of tutorials on TH-cam are free. There might be some people offering paid courses, but you can learn Godot without those! :) I never any paid Godot education to learn all that I needed.
@@wolkadev Oh you need to its like sharpening your skills.. 80 percent of game dev quit because their habit are not good
I find it hard to believe you were once a research scientist, given how cute your voice is. You sound like a little kid! 😆 Your Vtuber avatar really suits you well.
Thanks! Never judge a book by its cover I guess :D
Good luck :), just found this video. I'm a indie developer too, just hobby for now. regardless of the success of this project, you can use all the systems you made to make another game much faster so you don't have just one shot to make the work pay off
The devlog style is quite unique and funny with the character. All the best for your journey ahead.
I'm glad to hear that things are still moving along! Good luck at GDC!
From what I hear a lot of first time developers really struggle to get good sales on their first game. I dont think it is that their game is bad or not fun, it is just that you don't have an established group of people who already know they will like your game. It seems like you are really letting a lot of people know about your game and trying to get it into as many hands as you can though. I hope it will all work out for you in the end, and just know that regardless of how it does you put an amazing thing out there. Like you made a work of art that only you could have made.
Thank you for your kond words! :)
i was very curious abuot godot but it is also programming like unity... even so your game appears to be much like an game than before. And i think from somepoint you need to think it is an Game on final, so if you have whatever you have in mind..if you dont make an quick time event only you end up making an game like much others... maybe the way is that on final you have to make similar to what someone did before or an ''team'' did... What i praise every day about indie is that they innovate on somepoint and this is the best deal for games today.. I am an tiny fan of eastward game but the new dlc make me think that it is just an copy of an harvest game that alot of harvest games have...and it is just the visual on final that changed.. maybe i am hitting much the button and being exigent to see new gameplay style but there are few games that innovate but many just copy what exhist, i know it is more easy to make an shooter and just focus on the visual side but after 20 or 26 years playing games i get bored easy with games that just are copy. To praise your game but being totally honest, your game isnt an copy... and that is what calls me to comment here and watch your video. I can only praise and cheer and pray that you can keep doing it but avoid overdo yourself or ''throw all money to the sky '' to make it... just ''be wise and never react but respond on intelligent form'' That is an phrase that inspire me. Another tip i can bring to help is: There is this team called blackcitadel, they are also making game devlogs on youtube, the way he does to make his game grow is an discord chat community to help hin develop his game meanwhile people can also make stuff for his game like 3d assets and etc.... Thank you for make all these amazing and inspiring gamedevlogs
Thank you so much! Yeah, I hope I can innovate on the genre and not just make a copy. I have a lot of ideas, but of course bringing all those ideas into the game in time is the real challenge. I have a Discord too, the link is in the description if you are interested!
@@wolkadev Sorry if my comment was very obssesed with the innovation theme thing, i just hope your game be an ''star'' shinning upon others harvest games. I know it is hard, i myself studied for 9 months and on final i realized i did not wanted to programming on the way i was doing because i want an more artistic way to express my stories so i quit that idea not by surrender but i accomplished what i most wished and was curious about. Now i am studying 2d art. I really want to be part on your discord,if i can help somehow it will be amazing as well.
Good luck at GDC! We're also showing off our game to puhlishers there. Make sure to schedule meeting with the publishers in advance if possible!
Good luck to you too! Maybe we run into each other! And already on it! :D
I hope to see you at GDC!
Yay, I'm at the SwissGames booth, come by to say hello! :)
Good luck at GDC! Wishlisted the game to help the steam algo :)
Congrats on all of the hard work and the grants/ mentorships! I'm rooting for you from Canada :)
Good Luck for you at GDC <3
Very interesting game, wish listed on steam and wishing you good luck!
Thanks a lot! :D
All the best! Love your videos and your game.
Still using Godot?
Yes, still using Godot and loving it 😊

Hi - I like your attitude. Are you in contact with Philomenia Schwab over there in Zurich? If not, please look her up and connect to her - I'm sure she can and will give you some mentoring about game development, as she runs a successful studio of eight people and is very active in empowering new developers, especially women. This may bring some risks and chances into a more fleshed out light. Love your work!
Thank you! Yes, I know her, she's really cool! :)
i would love to see a video about your time as a research scientist, i dont see alot of game devs with that background and it would be interesting to see how one makes that transition and if there is any cross over with game development
Ok, I'll put it on the list of future videos! :) Maybe it's time to share my secret past haha
Congratulations on getting the grants and being part of the Swiss delegation at GDC!! Fingers crossed for finding a publisher! 😊
I love to watch your journey. :D
How close to a demo is this vertical slice? Why is there a difference? Am I dense?
There is prototypes, vertical slices and demos. The vertical slice is a build where all the major systems are contained, and as a term most clear. From what I've seen, sometimes prototype is used for something that exists before the vertical slice. Demo is often used to describe a playable, downloadable demo on Steam, which usually adds a bit more "game feel" to the vertical slice. But yeah, sometimes it all means the same. :) It can become confusing.
Hope all goes well for you !! Being a solo dev is a lot of hard work.
Good luck at GDC and good luck with your game !
Good luck, WolKa! Your game and its progress has been really interesting to follow from the start and I really hope to see more of it in the future.
