  • I'm a VTuber developing my very first indie game about farming in space and turning your desert home planet green! I always loved playing games like Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley, and now I want to create my own take on that genre. I will make monthly devLogs for you to follow the process. Will I make it or fail miserably? :) Thank you so much for watching!
    This time, I focus on crisp graphics rendering of 2D sprites (including mipmapping, super sampling, and fixed resolution rendering) and sprite animation.

    Careful about tying game code to animation events, they don't always fire when the frame rate is low, you'll eventually see issues I think. I only really use animation events for audio because I don't really care if audio is skipped sometimes. Usually I trigger code when an animation event fires via behaviors in mecanim, and add a delay if necessary to line it up to the action.

      I never had issues with animation events in Unity and I used them for a very long time in multiple projects.

    • @Shafournee
      @Shafournee 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's no issues with using animation events, even at a low framerate. They should be completely reliable and always fire. If that happens to you it's a bug, and you should report it to Unity.

    • @MaximumAxiom
      @MaximumAxiom 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Shafournee it's been like this for 6+ years, and there have been bug tickets that they didn't address. It is what it is, the best you can do is work around it.
      It's not surprising, key frames get skipped all the time in mecanim animation clips, and animation events with them as far as I can gell

    • @Shafournee
      @Shafournee 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MaximumAxiom I've worked with the animator for a long, and never run into those issues, but if you're just speaking from experience I get it.
      Unity is very fickle, and there's definitely weird behavior that you'd think they would fix, but they just refuse to lol

    Loving your watercolour painting like artstyle.. very cute animations. Keep it up! From where I come from 'Coconut trees' are very prominent. Coconut Trees give 3 resources: water (inside tender coconuts), wood ( tree trunk) , fire creators (Coconut Shells). You can either chop the tree for 'wood' or harvest the tree for tender coconuts 'water' & coconut shells 'fire starter'.

    It looks like you have made some great progress since the last video! It sounds like you are getting pretty in-depth with the way different plants grow and propagate. Will there be systems for grafting (so that you get different fruits off of a stronger root stock)? Will there be differences between Annuals, Biennials and Perennial plants? It's something I don't recall seeing in many farming games for things like carrots, as an example - having the choice to harvest them in the first season as the vegetable, or let them carry over to the next season to grow into a flower that produces a lot of seeds.
    Since you've asked, a few plants I liked having when I had a garden:
    - Scarlet Runner bean: it is a vining bean plant that will grow up a trellis. It produces red flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds, and long bean pods.
    - Lamb's Quarters: these ones just kind of grew wild and would just pop up in the garden now and then. It's quite tasty when sauteed in butter. (kind of cheating, as these ones were "volunteers")
    - Chocolate Mint: a variety of mint that also has a bit of a chocolate taste to it.
    - Rhubarb: my grandmother would make the best pies with it.

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohhhh, I would love to add grafting, but this would be way out of scope of what I planned. I'll keep it in mind in case there is time after finishing all the other systems, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. 😅
      So far I have single-cycle plants (that die after they had flowers/fruit), multi--cycle (that just keep on growing fruit) and temperature dependent plants like trees. It doesnt cover carrots yet, but would be easy enough to do. :) I really like the idea!
      And thanks for all the super cool suggestions, chocolate mint sounds amazing!! 😁

      @@wolkadev The name is Palo de regaliz and you chew on the dried roots of the plant. I hope this makes it more clear, on Wikipedia the latin name is Glycyrrhiza glabra.

    I think it's gonna be important to consider the purpose of a plant. If the player can grow and harvest 20 different types of fruit, then which variation of fruit should you cultivate?
    In a lot of games of this kind certain crops/materials become redundant pretty quickly. So what some players will do is plant huge fields of 1 type of crop as it makes the most money given the effort required to grow them.
    Or some plants are to be considered "upgrades" over others. Like say, early on you can only plant cacti and such because of the poor soil quality.
    But as soon as one can grow apple trees everywhere the player is going to replace all cacti. This can be quite tricky to balance, but imo it's a good idea to encourage the player to grow a variety of plants as that is basically new gameplay and will also make the gardens look more lively and interesting. One idea would be to have different farm locations, with different temperatures and water availability.
    The ship could act as a sort of "here we can grow whatever we want" or "here we can grow and research plants" place. But the space is limited inside the ship and maybe the inhabitants of the planet need much more than what you can produce inside your ship. Just some thoughts that came up.
    The art looks super cute and drawing the sprites without color first is a great idea. Also think it's the right decision to prioritize plant growth stages and seasons over adding another 20 plants.
    Good luck! Viel Erfolg!

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like what you wrote. Agree 100% and I have been thinking about this too. I have a few ideas to hopefully discourage monocultures:
      1. A market system where the money you get for an item decreases the more you sell of them.
      2. More profitable plants may decrease soil quality, so they need to be planted next to other plants which increase it.
      3. I will have animals which will all have different food plants they eat.
      4.Maybe you might be able to trade random crops at a market instead of money, so it might pay off to have a variety.
      I don't have an exact plan, but something like this. :)

    I've tried making one myself, and here are some suggestions/fail exp to share:
    1. As you might have notice already, the farming game will have many animations for each tool you try to implement... thus its a good idea to use animator overide controller...
    2. If you decided not to use a finite state machine pattern then consider at least using the Behaviour in the Animator. cuz the switch case statement turns out to be a pain to read at the end of my project.
    3. There is a new official preview package from unity to support import from Aseprite. It will auto create the animation from the Tags in the aseprite file and auto generate a animation controller too. I would highly recommend using that instead of photoshop because the photoshop work flow for animation is a pain to work with. If you are using this approach, you might also want to look into how to animate using code from Tarodev channel, it will save you tons of time from maintaining the animator complex...
    4. In my "Little" project...after spending a few months making all the game play mechanics (planting,tool, crafting,day/night,dialogue, npc schedule, npc pathfinding,in game item data base + other custom tools, 3 maps) and parts of the animations ... i realize... its a pain to implement the rpg contents in the game ... it will be an estimate of another 1-2 years for me to add the game play rpg content like each npc dialogues, quests, ...etc. So...i decided to drop the project when i thought i was half done...

      Hi, thank you so so much for sharing your experience so extensively! :) It is super helpful! I'm going to look more into what you wrote about Animations. As for the project duration... yes, I also expect it is going to take more than a year. I do not mind, I just need to plan carefully, so I do not run out of money. :) I'm used to long term projects from working in research before. Thanks again! :D

      About the image size, did you tested vector based lines? on clip studio there is this option,maybe not in photoshop...
      you really bring much knowledge from these issues and it is a gold mine for who want to make 2d art game. i myself love both and want to do both but 3D also calls me..so im planning to do grease pencil as an test to export as an 2d plane to an 3d enviroment..maybe it can help you too...
      Oh my god, you did a lot of work here,i mean the tree grows,the tree give fruit,the variation of vegetables and other stuff.. it is an brilliant work that going to be an brilliant game, i am from Brazil and we have some peculiar plants that you can also put on your game. i loved that purple flower you did and grew on this video, i am developing an rpg game and in sometime ago i searched for all the natives trees and flowers from Scotland an country that is like a dream for me so i draw and draw again all the trees and leaves but i did not finished the game because i need to learn more about how to do video games... i also sugest some to your game,the richer the better.
      i am loving the result you did here and my gamer side says: '' i want to play!!! ''
      Definitively harvest moon games from back of time on ps1 was the game i most played with my brother and your game is maybe the new most advanced harvest moon i seen so far, i played some nowadays but nothing that have the rich things you bring here like the variety,the cactus is something amazing! and im excited to see more.

    It would indeed have been a shame to have low resolution wiggles, so I'm glad the wiggle quality can be kept!
    As for plants, I don't think I could live without rice, though that seems like a real challenge, growing that in a desert :D

    Hahaha Kohlrabi Starship is a great name. I really like the idea, though for me it's a bit counterintuitive that everything you do takes place inside the starship. Wouldn't it be more logical to grow everything on the outside? Or is there a part to the story im missing?

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You will also be able to grow plants outside, but every planet has different conditions and only a few plants will survive there. In the spaceship you will be able to set temperature, light etc as you want for different rooms and grow everything you collect. :)

  • @TreizeSC
    @TreizeSC ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure I understand your bug, but if you used normalized vector or raw input you will always have a value between -1 and 1 and so the blend tree will always play one animation.

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว

      It might depend on the Input System we use I think. Unfortunately in my case normalization is not enough. E.g. when I walk left, I get a movement Vector2 (-1, 4.73636e-8). And even though the second entry is very small and can be considered 0, it will still blend with the upward walking and trigger an animation event for this.

  • @InzeDev
    @InzeDev ปีที่แล้ว

    It's incredibly impressive that you've individually drawn out and hand placed all of those sprites. I'm currently working with pixel art on my game for the express purpose that you mentioned with the color distortions on different resolution, though my style is not nearly as cute as yours despite my best attempts.
    To organize my sprite sheet, i've been using Aesprite to compare the animation frames which saves a lot of time getting the animations to work and lets me export the sprite sheets. This might be something to consider and save you some time in the long run. However, it could possibly effect the style of your game as Aesprite a purely pixel art centered program, so it's understandable if you want to avoid that technique.
    I am also very interested in your time of day/seasons system. Do you use a state machine pattern for both of those or some other method? I'm trying to make a system for my player to change between 3 different states based on a certain amount of time passing and am trying to get as many ideas for how to accomplish this as I can.

    • @wolkadev
      @wolkadev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks a lot! :) I considered Aesprite, but chose Procreate, since it has really nice support for animations. Only the export of the spritesheet is not automatic, but once the animations are done it does not take too much extra work in photoshop.
      My day/night system is purely based on continious time, and I can specify an hour for dawn and dusk, where I change the global light with a gradient. I kept it quite generic, cause I need to have different settings for other planets.
      The growth if plants depends on temperature. Some plants (like the trees) have seasons and an internal state machine. But it is different for each type of seasonal plant, so I could have seasonal plants on colder or warmer planets.
      I can't say if this is the best way to do it, but so far it works nicely for me. :) Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

    • @InzeDev
      @InzeDev ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wolkadev Thanks for your reply! The time based gradient for your day/night cycle actually just gave me an idea for a separate feature I'm working on that involves light changes for various object states.
      Really interesting that planet temperature is something you have to consider. I hadn't thought about that before you mentioned it, but makes perfect sense. Really excited to see how the rest of your development goes and how the mechanics and style of the game evolves :D
