  • How to Set Up a Small Electroforming Bath for Beginners
    Although what I am actually doing in this video is electroplating it is commonly referred to as electroforming. To find more in depth information about how to set up your bath I can't recommend the Electroforming Facebook group enough. They have an invaluable amount of information about this art form.

    💗HELPFUL TIPS
    --The rectifier should be set on CC
    -- You don't want the solution to be cold because it will take a longer time to plate. I'd say 75
    degrees and above
    -- You want to check on your pieces every so often and jiggle them so that they don't form to the hanging wire and you end up with an indention on your piece.
    -- Don't give up! I have ruined so many pieces trying to learn the process and the satisfaction you will receive when one plates beautifully will be worth all the trouble.
    -- Always seal your stones if they are below 7 on the Mohs' Scale: bit.ly/2Q6Smps
    -- A simple guide to follow is .1 amp per sq. inch of the item

    I use 12G wire for the anode (wire inside beaker) not 16G as mentioned in the video.

    can you do more than one ring in the beaker at a time?

    • @MandyReyesDesigns
      @MandyReyesDesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes you can! In a small set, I haven't had the best luck with anything more than 3 rings. You just want to make sure you have enough copper wire on the inside and that you jiggle them around so they don't bond to the hanging wire. Slow and steady is the best, and check on them to make sure some aren't growing more copper than others.

    What is the ideal place to set up? is it safe to do it in the room you sleep? Love 💕 your work

      Thank you! I would set it up outdoors on a patio or in the garage or somewhere well ventilated.

    Hello, good video. I am making my first attempts at this, now I am going to start with a power supply but I am not sure how to do it. What do you recommend ?, according to the type of piece that I put to electroform, what amps do I put ?. How is that: if the piece is opaque / shiny, raise or lower amps ?, it is not clear to me. And another question that I don't see on video. When you take the piece out of the solution you are treating, do you submerge it in water with bicarbonate ?, then cover it with a wax or varnish ?. Thank you!!

      If your piece has about an inch of surface to plate then you would set it at .1 amps. The is the total surface, I always just kind of eyeball it and guess the size because it's often difficult to determine. So if you see the pendant at the end of the video I'd say that's about 3 inches of conductive surface (only measure where you painted). Then check on it after a few minutes, if it is dark orange your amps are too high and if it's not plating after about 10 min turn it up. When I take my piece out, I don't follow the rule on that. I just wash my piece with soap and then I shine it up with a brass brush or dremel and oxidize it with liver of sulfur. I don't use wax, I then paint it with protecaclear to maintain the oxidation color for as long as possible.

    2 questions: are you able to reuse the solution for another project? (if yes...can you pour it back in the unused solution or it has to stay seperate?) and also can you put multiple pieces in at once ?

    • @MandyReyesDesigns
      @MandyReyesDesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep you can reuse it over and over. And yes you can.

    Hi! Thank you so much for this video! Super helpful ❤
    I have a question. If I'm doing sterling silver plating, do I need to get a sterling silver wire for inside the beaker? I know the electroforming solution is different, but I don't want to ruin the solution by putting a copper wire in there 😅

    • @MandyReyesDesigns
      @MandyReyesDesigns  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm almost positive this will not work for silver, only copper.

      @@arielmay827 I know! When I learned, I was hoping you could too. I purchased a really inexpensive plating kit that goes over the copper, but it was a waste of money. I think there are companies that you can send your pieces to and they plate for you, might be worth checking out. Good luck!
