What you said in the video were my exact thoughts. I actually liked Grown-ish because it was relatable to me. Kenya Barris is a one trick pony that writes from a perspective that only him and others with the same privileges experience.
I really hate how Black women/girls (unambiguous) are being replaced with biracial women and girls. It’s almost erasure at this point.

Kenya Barris has had a color complex for YEARS. I rewatched an episode of Soul Food not too long ago, centered around Ahmad and his 'preference' for white/light skinned/biracial girls. He argued to his brownskinned mother in the end that it wasn't because he hated himself, it was just what he liked. Basically made the mom out to be the villain in the episode like she was unreasonable in her observation and Ahmad's father chewed her out like her concerns were crazy.
It was almost like the writer had something to prove🤔. Well lo and behold, Kenya Barris wrote the episode🤦🏾‍♀️
In general, it's like he's trying to create the 'new' black household. Everyone is light/mixed but goes out of their way to prove they are still pro black. Very weird.

@@sinaitome8764 Exactly! Especially because everyone was treating it like a non issue. Even her sisters! The problem wasn't really explored or given any complexity. Maxine was basically told to shut up about it & that it was her issue, not Ahmad's nor society's. Who knew that mess of an episode would become the man's entire career?

The more I hear about this movie, the less inclined I am to watch it. As you said the age of the actors is a problem, they are both pushing 40. They may be portraying younger characters in the movie, but I have a hard time believing the parental acceptance is as important as though they were 22. I thought that I wanted to watch this movie, but I think that I would prefer to use that time some other way.

The reason you felt more connection to The Cosby Show than to Blackish is because The Cosby Show had more developed dialogue and highly displayed black culture and the arts all throughout the show. It also had the "very black" spinoff "A Different World."
On top of which, both shows showed the array in spectrum of black skin colors in both men and women. They did a great job on both of those shows. This is part of why I hate that Bill Cosby tainted his legacy because those two shows are iconic for the culture.

His shows are biracial & honestly nowadays there are barely any shows will fully blooded black people in tv. It’s crazy how tv shows are going backwards when we have shows in the 90s like a show living single. It’s definitely erasure. Lord knows I don’t want it to feel like I’m banishing biracial people but the world needs to realize that having two different race parents not fully blooded black parents there is a difference & that’s okay. Being different is not bad but we deserve shows that cater to us too not saying take roles away from biracial people.
You are apart of community but you are apart of white peoples as well no matter what anybody tries to say. I still can’t believe they have identity issues all because someone wanted to deny them it’s sad. But humans always want to OTHER someone they done it to us African black people since the beginning of time. Divide & conquer because even though it says American at the end we are not from here we are African periodt. That’s a whole nother convo there tho.

Kenya Barris is a one trick Pony. I really liked Black-ish when it 1st came out. Then after a while it got to be the same sandwich, just with different bread. It was always a race sandwich. Grownish started good, but then they decided to repeat the cycle again with Junior going to school. And black AF was just black-ish on Netflix.

  • @KC_90
    @KC_90 ปีที่แล้ว +7

funniest part of the film was David Duchovny serenading Lauren’s character with John Legend on the piano. It was the most realistic scene, not blatantly racist but still a bit tone deaf (yet not offensive). Julia Louis Dreyfus antics on the other-hand were just extreme (as were Eddie Murphy’s).

I gave the movie a shot because I try to keep an open mind. For all his accomplishments, Barris has a limited range and it shows. I feel like Jonah Hill would've done a better job. There was no heart to this film. It wasn't awkward in a fun way. The jokes were played and obvious. All the performances felt stiff and contrived from a group of great actors. It got tedious real quick. And the ending was dumb.

I keep giving Kenya a chance and I can't anymore. All these good actors and this is what we got. Everything you said I said to my friends when watching. From the two dark brown parents and their biracial child, the complete lack of chemistry, the way the pacing spent too much time on stupid gags and glossed over the relationship to wrap it up so quickly at the end for a terrible CG kiss. We were cheated!!
I was so mad Nia Long added nothing to this movie except her name. I like all these actors and the only person I thought didn't feel like they were phoning it in was Deon Cole. Even though Julia Louis Dreyfus character irked me, I thought she was better than most of the cast because she really did get me hot and I did appreciate the ending apology from her. I dunno what is going on w/ Eddie Murphy. David Duchovney was...ok for what he did and I have met dads like him so I guess he was "real". Just not good and I wanted it to be soooo bad.

This movie was horrible and so cringe. I question anybody's taste in movies who says it was good. I'm also seeing ppl give Lauren London a pass for not having chemistry because of Nipsey's death... ummmm that's literally the whole point of acting. To embody somebody different.... She's literally the Saweetie of acting. Who keeps giving this girl role starring roles!

The information about Kenya Barris at the start of the video is in my opinion your best work thanks to your wisdom and honesty about Kenya and the industry as a whole. I don't know where to start...I believe that there is nothing wrong with doing interracial relationships in shows/movies but it has to be done well than putting in the checkmark to please some people online, it sounds like the You People movie was boring to watch and I agree with the criticism. Sounds like Kenya is the new Tyler Perry in that when you find out that Kenya is doing this the eyes are ready to roll back like The Undertaker because he's a one-trick pony and it's the same shit as the other movies/shows that he did, plus he's doing the remake of The Wizard of Oz and I wonder if the casting of Dorothy is going to be Ariel 2.0 I would not be surprised if that happens and I did defend the casting of Ariel in the remake but the movie had to be promising than a lackluster so I hope that the remake of The Wizard of Oz is good than another lackluster heartless movie. 👍❤️

I'm only liking this video for your review NOT the movie itself, and I didn't even watch the movie tbh lol🤣. I got heavy spoilers from my homegirl and I found it ridiculous that someone like Jonah Hill could bag someone like Lauren London, (not to hate on anyone's love story, cuz love is love and i'm sure this has happened before) but be fr. Jonah's character and the constant lying pissed me off. Lying about still using COCAINE, lying about that whack ass ring he proposed to her with, lying and pretending to be deep( wannabe black) and . His parents were clearly uncomfortable with him bringing home a black girl, especially the mother and all her micro-aggressions ;they were definitely written as the type of white people who "don't see color" ,but that's problematic when dating outside your community. These types of conversations considering the circumstances are necessary especially in America and it seems like too much of a hassle, especially when they don't respect each other's cultures. Honestly, the beautiful Nia Long and Eddie Murphy and his comedic presence is probably what would make me check it out and nothing else. Sorry for the long rambles girl😝😂

Both Jonah and Lauren are great as this Black/Jewish interracial couple but the writing in this film is unbelievably I won’t say it awful I will say bad terrible screenplay from Jonah himself and Mr. Harris as well. I’ve more disappointed the fact we’re seen Eddie Murphy, Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny playing Black Muslim Family and Jewish Family going head to head figure it out are they’re perfect together. Also, the movie trying to us who’s the bad parents and the idiots my biggest concerns is Kenya Harris going to continue making these interracial stereotypes or keep making television shows?.
Jonah Hill will make his first directorial debut Mid90s which I seen and loved is the last person you expect teaming up with Kenya Harris.
    👎🏾 2/5

    💯 facts
I understand now why Kenya B named his show Black-ish. I was offended on the name alone when the show first came out. Esp when I saw the skin tone of the characters. Which kinda matches his skin tone. I'm not coming at him with the School Daze approach, I'm just saying, I understand why he did what he did.

    You people,
Basically neither of them needed sibling's cus we just seen Lauren's brother once at the coffee shop when we met Eddie.
And seems like his sister just was put in the movie (and made her gay because of course...) To flirt with Lauren when he brought her home.
My favorite characters was Eddie and Julia. Eddie played a good straight man comedy roll in this to me.Especially scenes wit Mike Epps. And Julia seems like every show I see her in is hilarious.I think I can watch it again when I'm bored in the background. I'm never watching coming 2 america again.

If Jonah Hill went clean shaven with that hair style he'd look like ever middle aged man in the early 2000s'. Such a strange time men with Sun in, in their slick backed hair.

Certain parts were cute but as a whole this movie is 🚮 & I hate that, the casting was good the lil previews were ok so that made me want to watch all just to end up disappointed. Throughout the movie they looked like friends or a marriage set up by their parents, the physical moments were speed up & bypassed fast as hell lol I couldn’t tell if they kissed or bumped four heads. It’s like she just took this role just to put herself out there more or maybe they switched the dude who originally suppose to play the boyfriend 😂idk the way she was acting I would thought he smelled funny & he seemed very cautious with how he touched her. All weird
