    Monica was so stuck on Quincy even after their breakup in college. She gave up the one thing that she loved the most, which was basketball, because she didn't have Quincy anymore and decided to get a job in her father's bank. She never gave herself a chance to live. She should have dated more and really experience life. Her whole world was centered around Quincy and basketball.

      It's hard to date when you don't want nobody else... If you still have feelings for someone else, then don't go wasting other people's time, using them to get over that person... That's selfish... She did the right thing.

      @@RobotRebelCinemaShe could’ve given herself a better life and she would’ve gotten over him eventually. Some people act like you can only have one connection with someone. This wasn’t a romantic love story at all. This was a classic act of a BW waiting around in the hopes of a man being her happiness.
      Romantic relationships and children aren’t for everyone. Idc what anyone says, Monica settled and never even gave herself a chance.
      It’s unfortunate how you automatically assumed that she needed to move onto someone else. She could’ve enjoyed herself and her singleness + meet actual friends…

    • @RobotRebelCinema
      @RobotRebelCinema ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@indigoGoddess7 I never said she should move on to someone else... I actually said the exact opposite... She needs to work on herself and get over Q before walking into someone else's life with her emotional baggage.
      In my 34 years of living, one of the TOP things I've learned about women (not just BW, women in general) is when they love and I mean really love someone, they love HARD... And they will always love that person even when they are not in a relationship with them...
      My point is so many women in this world settle in marriages because they are ultimately not with their first choice, and therefore the man they end up with is a poor sap and most of the time he doesn't even know it... I say that because unless that woman has had a good and complete closure with the real person she's in love with (which most of the time they never do), she will never love the person she's with, the right way... That's why divorces are so high and women are the main ones filing them.
      Prime example, Will & Jada... 2Pac died before Jada could get real closure with him and because of that she will NEVER love her husband of 20+ years the way he loves her because her heart still belongs to a dead man.

      No he wanted her but only superficially. You saw that when they was kids. He had toxic male views of women. So when she balled out on him no he didn't like that. But when she was dolled up he liked what he saw. But he screwed up when he got bossy and said she HAD to ride his bike. Aka women supposed to listen men. Once he saw she wouldn't do exactly what he said he didn't want her. That's the whole dynamic the whole movie. When she was pretty he wanted her but the second she didn't do exactly what he said he flipped on her. But she should of just moved on. He didn't want a woman with a mind. Black people really love this film, but now that I’m older I really can’t overlook its flaws.
    First of all, Quincy’s character was very underdeveloped. His relationship with Monica was very one-sided from the very beginning with Monica being the one that truly showed that she cared about the relationship. Me and my homeboy would joke that the only times in the film that Quincy showed interest in Monica was when her hair was done. Even Monica’s mom commented that she would be more desirable by men if she did her hair. I didn’t hate the Quincy character per se, but the plot didn’t do a good enough job building him up to the audience.
    Also, Quincy having a complete meltdown about the Allstate dude cheating on his mom was unrealistic. They established pretty early in the film that Quincy would overhear his parents’ arguments..Quincy should not have been that naive. I get that the plot needed to have he and Monica break up to have the predictable reconciliation at the end, but Quincy spazzing out over his father after he idolized him was not believable. His father provided a good life for him. What happened with his parents was none of his business anyway. They broke up after he was 18.
    Lastly, Sanaa Lathan and Alfre Woodard have played daughter and mother in at least 3 films that I know of (this film, The Family That Preys, and Something New) and they always have an antagonistic relationship. Make it make sense.

      Love how you broke everything down. And l agree . Maybe Quincy's character was underdeveloped ??? Especially , the way he spazzed out over his parents situation ???
      But as far as how he delt with Monica made sense to me. Because that was me yrs ago
      I kind of treated my late wife (who was just my childhood friend at that time) almost "exactly" like Quincy treated Monica.
      Q just saw Monica as his homie for a long time. I could relate to that. That childhood friendship transitioning into adulthood is weird for some ppl.
      Monica saw Q in a romantic way early on. While Q basically saw Monica as the "homie" . You can't fault him for that. Men tend to catch on much later than most women their age ???
      The only times Q saw her in any other light then the "homie" was when he saw her with her hair done at the dance . And when she challenged him to that one on one basketball contest for his heart before he was supposed to get married ??? That's when Q really realized what she really ment to him. That's when he knew. That's what snapped him out of just seeing Monica as just "the Homie". I became clear to him.
      I was just like Q. My homie got my grandfather a headstone for hus grave because when l first came home from a prison stint , It was hard for me to find my grandfather's grave ??? They only had a little red flag in the ground as a place marker.
      That upset me because my grandfather was a WW2 army veteran. The military was supposed to had supplied that headstone ???
      My then homie saw just how upsetting that was to me. And she , without me knowing anything. Took her student loan money and purchased my grandfather a headstone.
      We went back to the grave later and l was looking for that little flag again a saw that headstone instead. I was floored !!! Crying and everything. It was a moment for sure. One that lll Never forget.
      Immediately , l knew she had done this for me. Without me even asking because l didnt . She just was so unselfish. And so generous towards me.
      At that moment she went from "the Homie" to the Love of My life.
      So in closing , i could absolutely relate to Quincy's character . And his immaturity . His character flaws as a man. And him not recognizing Monica in a different light until the end. Which was in fact , the begining to the rest of their lives together.
      Personally , l think they should make a part 2 , to see them as a married couple. Because me and my late wife had some adventures that were more interesting than the things that happened when she was just my Homie ???

    I never understood the hype of this film. It is just another representation of toxic black love. The only thing about the movie that I ever enjoyed was that the story followed them as they grew into adulthood, but the journey fell flat too many time for me to ever be emotionally invested in this film. Basically, it’s a film that can be watched one time in a lifetime and then simply collect dust for an eternity. These types of love stories, especially concerning black love has gotten very old.

    I remember this. This was a very good movie from the main leads to the parent. Show you the struggle between young people and the pressure of growing up, school, career, family. This movie went so far hitting all the corners of life. Even show the later years of both playing for a team with one winning and the other losing. I mean this movie covers it all. Honestly I don't think there has been any movie ever like this. It might be the first movie of it kind? FD Signifier made a great video really breaking them all the way down to what makes them tick and the elements of performative Masculinity and Gender roles and it really helped me see the movie (especially Q's fuckery) in a more nuanced light.

  • @shayjones5716
    @shayjones5716 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Ok I have a diff perspective. I feel like BOTH had a lil flame for each other but they weren’t in a space to explore it.We see in the beginning her telling Leah to make her hair look pretty when she learns that Q’s walking her to school. But what was Q doing? Watching like a puppy her get her hair done. The next day their relationship lasted all of 5 minutes lol and they bumped heads again which set the tone for their friendship where we see them acting more like brother and sister in the way how they can fight like cats and dogs but still show up for each other when it mattered. They both had subtle moments of jealousy for the other but we don’t see Monica just pining away for him while he’s oblivious to her. She was always giving him hell bc that’s the type of relationship they had. Yes Q was a player but I don’t think he ever wanted to play her. He was able to have deeper feeling for her than the randoms bc they already cared about each other, they just showed it in a weird way. He wasn’t perfect but I do think he loved her.

    I can relate to this movie because it happened in my life in some similar ways.
    Me & my late wife were childhood friends off & on.
    It wasn't until l became an adult that l understood hiw much my childhood friend really ment to me .
    My friend held me down in so many ways , l had to recognize that God ordained this woman to be my life partner.
    We had our ups & downs like any other relationship , but l knew that she was that one.
    :
    Just like Monica understood after Q was about to get married that she couldnt let him get away .
    They had way to much history & memories between them. Q realized that too.

I hated the scene where Monica is struggling to be on the college girls team but the white lady coach and the senior girl Sidra keep throwing bull crap in her face making her feel like she don’t belong there and that gets on my nerves. She was already going through annoying controlling nonsense with her mother keep telling her what to do and forcing her to change her attitude and smile and whatever. I also felt for Q when his father is not being a man for his family and going behind his mothers back cheating.

    The movie was very honest about being young and thirsty when it comes to romance. Monica did well with her lack of experience. It was great that she wouldn't compromise on her career goals. So often men want women to sacrifice their career and bet everything on being with them.

  • @shellyb6926
    @shellyb6926 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Lol. Your reactions were hilarious 🤣. I love this movie, and i dont even like romantoc films. It was a great story imo, and it was just very well-written, well-shot, great acting, great soundtrack. I saw it when it first came out on vhs (i was like 11 years old or so), and ive seen it a million times since then.
    This definitely was struggle love lol. But i wasnt upset by it. Q was a jerk, but the movie constantly reminded us of why he was the way he was. His upbringing had a lot to do with his personality. His dad was a big shot, and his mom was second fiddle to the dad. So, thats why q's mentality was like that. I think he cared about and loved monica the whole time, but she was a different type of girl, and he didnt know how to deal with that type of girl. He knew how to deal with women whose sole goal was to look good and hook up with a baller...women who were more like his mom, probably. But monica had goals for her career and she was strong-minded, and he wasnt taught how to deal with a woman like that. So he showed his love in indirect ways, like how he payed attention to her game stats, and how he would joke on her and be immature. He was a product of his upbringing.
    I think monica would have been in the right if she wanted to leave him though, because a woman doesnt have to wait around for a man to heal from his past and grow up if she doesnt want to wait. However, she loved him, and they had a special bond. The heart wants what it wants sometimes. At least her affection was reciprocated in the end. Although, i always felt like he probably turned out to be a trash husband to her lol. Im glad we didnt have to see that part though.

    I hated the movie, even when I was younger. Q was entitled, spoiled & selfish (all about him), and Monica was always short sighted, unable to see the bigger picture & placing far too much of her happiness onto Q. There were other men far deserving and worthy of her time, but she only ever had eyes for him. And he wasn't supportive, loyal or faithful. She was just a talented doormat who essentially ended up begging him to choose her. It screamed of desperation and punishment for Black women's excellence. I never understood why this movie was so popular and loved by my sistas. I'm glad BW are waking up and realizing the indoctrination now.

    This is really one of my favorite movies and I’ll play devil’s advocate all day. So many people want to be mad a Q not realizing he was YOUNG and was going through so much with the absence of his dad. Now Monica on the other hand never really reached out to him, until after she realized he was engaged. I will say no relationship is perfect . Their was no indefinitely, and something they could’ve recovered from in due time. The main issue was Q hadn’t matured , and pushed her away during his darkest hour. He needed to heal . My favorite scene is the ending when he’s cheering “ go mommy “. It’s a full circle moment. I recall in the beginning she says, “ I told you I was nice. I’m going to be the first girl in the NBA. Then he says, “ no imma be in the NBA and you gone by my cheerleader. “ in the last scene it shows him actually being the cheerleader. 🥹🥹🥹❤️
