The silencing isn't happening because it's the truth. It's happening because the truth happens to be very unprofitable and economically painful for all the world's economy. Fixing climate change involves huge economic changes that will completely eliminate certain corporations or force them to adapt and change a LOT.. Greed is going to fuck over our species, not necessarily a dislike of the truth. Climate change won't be fully addressed until it's profitable to do so.

I'm totally on your side with you calling out the hypocrisy and as such I despise when they do that, but having said that, I have to point out that I don't mind so much if they make fun of my looks orb whatever as long as they will also address whatever argument that I'm presenting to them.
I am proof that people can change. I am one of the people who used to mock her (albeit, not in the intentionally mean-spirited way that some do. I just thought she was rude for yelling at adults in her speeches, and that was weird to me at the time). Recently, I’ve realized that I’d rather embrace sincere, good hearted people like Greta, rather than nit-pick about the details. The world needs more people like her.
I wish more people were open to change. Respect.
Sincerity isn't always kind and friendly, but it's rare, and that makes it respectable.
There is something strange in having to appreciate that someone being honest with you even if you don't like them and vice versa. I'd rather be told I'm hated in sincerity rather than to be told I'm loved in a lie. I would respect the former more.

@Randomly In accurate There is no cataclysm if the Globe warms up. The world is actually very cold in comparison to earlier geological dates. We are currently in a grand Late Cenozoic Ice Age... temperatures get almost as cool as to wipe out all life from the planet and reset it back to bacteria... This almost happened during the Carboniferous period. So, if we are warming up that is actually good. There is a lot of data about this being good.

Props to Stephen being such a respectful, decent man. He asked questions of her that were indepth with a lot of thought and earnest. Thank you for not treating her like another "celebrity child actor". He was talking with her like he would Nancy Pelosi, for example , or anyone of that caliber. This is why I love his show so much.

You know she is around 18? Not really a child star or in school anymore. Usually at 18 they remove you from the "need to be in school" category and it becomes harder to get back in. -edit- my bad she is 17 but by 17 I was out of high school. To the system, at least in the west. You are almost an adult and need a job and to contribute.
She speaks of renewable sources of energy in her speeches all the time. She is raising awareness and that is what is immediately required for action to happen. More people are needed to push these ideas into reality.
The problem with renewable energy is that it is not reliable at all and wont provide us with nearly enough energy to Power out modern world. So unless you want to back to the stone age this is all a Utopia.

This is good, its nothing bad at all, and it works really well. Besides new technology development of Neo-nuclear fuels that won't explodes in case of a malfuction.. Its all producing high amount of electricity compared so solely like solar panels or wind technologies. Its green and creates jobs, whats not to like?

I do agree with you that the question of reliable source of energy is not an easy problem to solve because if it was easy to solve, it would have already been done so. That said however, one of the false arguments I hear is the common one you are "proposing" which is "we will suffer greatly and take many steps backwards if we were to implement strictly renewable sources of energy". It is a false argument because if we cannot continue on this path. Besides the fact that fossil fuel is finite (it will run out in < 200 years), the planet is simply burning up. This is not a sustainable path. Continuing on this path will lead us all to ruin (crop failures, loss of land due to rising sea levels etc) to the point that we may end up back to "the stone age".
Solving the problem of reliable renewable sources of energy is not optional; it is required for our survival.

I'm a 45 year-old "girl" (and even my son is 7 years older than Greta), and I'm deeply in awe everytime I listen to her speeches or interviews! It is extremely rare that people of this young age are capable of expressing themselves like this.
There's a "TED" speech (here on TH-cam, too) where her words remind me of the Club of Rome, like Graeme Maxton (former General Secretary of the Club of Rome) in one of his speeches ("The Four Economic Myths", here on TH-cam as well). Please listen to them whenever you can or find the time.

Yeah. I saw a pie chart on last year's budget which had about 5% for education (5% Health) and about 65% for the military. Scandinavia and particularly Finland do such a great job in terms of education. You can't even BE a teacher in Finland without a Masters degree. Private for profit schools are illegal, government funding is equal so parents can not only simply go to their closest school, they TRUST the teachers to do their jobs given they are experts.

Agreed, I believe Greta, AOC, everyone can work together to help deal with Global Warming. But it requires the right leadership and the willpower to change the future, and Trump does not have those attributes. Furthermore, if the next president can create a foundation to help fight against a possible doom of the climate crisis, then the presidents afrer that have the agenda to help prevent global warming be that much greater.

As for Gretta's maturity.... I sincerely hate seeing this "brain stops growing" bullshit. Go read the actual study. It doesn't actually mean what the media, politicians and lawyers say it does. The study was about risk taking behavior and the differences in how decisions are made between youthful brains and "mature" brains. It found that young brains, being more plastic relied more heavily on novel and adaptive thought processes to make decisions while older brains depended more on memory and past experience to compensate for their brain processes slowing down. The "age of maturation" as people call it is the point where your brain majority depends on the latter method over the former, building fewer new connections compared to the brain of a teen or someone in their early 20's.
The point your brain stops "growing" is the point you start getting dumber... it is not your peak performance intelligence. Juvenoia and a political incentive to keep young people disenfranchised and disbelieved, corrupted the data to mean the exact opposite of what it actually said about youth. While you're not wrong, and Gretta will learn to spur action from politicians better as she gains more experience and learns more about politics. She's not wrong to call politicians out on their bullshit either. I've been in politics and too often action doesn't happen until you strip people's excuses away publicly, harshly and in no uncertain terms. It's a grave misconception to think that the reason change is difficult is because politics/professions/business are complicated. They aren't. It's people who resist change. Not systems.
@@tomazowa Isn't that the point of youth though? The world is in the care of adults and they are responsible for making lives better for future generations. It is her prerogative to point out the problems because as a minor, she does not have the power the adults who run countries and corporations do t actually fix them. Despite that, she is bringing awareness and even proposed rudimentary solutions which I believe people in charge could at least acknowledge. She is not asking starving families in africa to die so that climate change could be reversed. That is people like you taking the message of the movement and twisting it to fit your narrative because everything is a zero sum game for you. If something has to improve, then something else has to be degraded. You can put what ever lens you want at any age and see the world to match your beliefs. Ms. Thunberg is a pillar of reason and sadly shows that our youth seems to be way more logical than our ekected "leaders".
In 40 years, it'll be a completely new world. The majority of the newer generations are progressive minds and leaders like Bernie Sanders will eventually become much more commonplace. I'm 26, so most of the time that I'm with my friends and family, we talk about ways we can make the world more efficient. Which sources of renewable energy are more practical, how much longer batteries last nowadays, etc... In order to stop climate change, we'd have to plant 3 billion trees a year, but with certain algae that can take in C02 400x more efficiently, combined with reducing our emission by about 15% in the next 20 years, we'd only have to plant 2.2 billion trees a year. We'd have to find a way to grow the algae in a large body of water and then collect it so that it could be stored, or buried as 99% solid carbon, but it's completely feasible.... I personally blame the whole tetraethyllead thing on why some of our parents and grandparents are so.... unhelpful. A lot of them grew up with dangerous levels of lead in their blood during crucial brain development stages as a result of leading gasoline and that can have serious repercussions on the brain later in life.
Our job is to bring in new leaders.
@John Burrett And you base your statement on what exactly? What compromise do you speak of? There is not much room for compromising here. If your house is on fire, would you like it to be put out or would you like the fire departement to find a compromise that suits both the fire and you?
@John Burrett When facts are established with overwhelming evidence, we stop talking about the subject in a speculative way and talk about it in a more black and white kind of way. The foundation has already been laid and reinforced. Think of it like this; When we get a team of engineers working on a new kind of satellite it's not a compromise to include a flat earther on that team. Yes, someone who thinks the earth is flat would bring additional perspective. Imagine a person who doesn't believe in gravity, trying to grasp orbital acceleration. it would just be a waste of time at that point, though. People who are either scientifically illiterate, or who desperately embrace pseudoscience are not capable of logic or reason. A climate science denier's opinion (likely swayed by over 120 years of big oil influence on the US education system), is not an equal argument to an environmental scientist's overwhelming evidence.

The reason why Greta is more popular is literally because of the hostility she received from some of the many famous people who began talking about her. Apparently the fastest way to bring attention to something is to get a ton of famous people to talk about it in good and bad contexts, and the negative response will keep empowering the positive response and then that's it. It's never going away. Greta's messages will never leave our current society's docket.

You might be from a generation that wastes everything and has to have the latest gizmo and the latest fashion in everything, but I was bought up not to waste anything, to mend items, not throw them out, use cloth bags for groceries, recycle every possible item, compost food waste, put lunch in a container, not plastic bags, never litter the countryside or throw rubbish into waterways, not to waste water or electricity (fans and jumpers instead of air con all the time) houses that were built to suit the climate, financially support organisations who are buying properties to rehabilitate the land and breed and reintroduce endangered species, plus others who are building sanctuaries for wild animals, walk or catch public transport whenever possible instead of driving, using power efficient appliances and my own water bottles, and I could go on. No wonder people like you (who can't even get my name correct) want people like me to shut up. You can go on your consuming ways and then pretend you are doing something wonderful by prancing down the street, preventing people from going about their legitimate business and think you are being wonderful and saving the Earth. @three blind mice I believe fossil fuels should be gradually eliminated. Even without the climate crisis there is a shortage of them and when they run out it will leave millions of people "dead in the water" as far as travel is concerned. We have very little in the way of public transport in America and a laughable need to keep adding lanes to the highway despite evidence that all it does is make traffic worse.
The Coch brothers fucked this country over in a BIG way.
As for the break in fossil fuels due to the virus, in my area there has been little change in traffic unfortunately. Texas is largely populated by idiots who simply don't care and people who can't afford to care because without working their three to five jobs, they and their families will starve.
Greta inspires me, this is true. But the change that anyone brings on at this point, I fear, is too little and too late.

Greta also said to end the fossil fuel madness. She does understand that we are quite dependent on them, but she wants governments to stop investing in ways to expand fossil fuel usage and turn to clean energy instead.
