    This does not change the fact that in Australia there are 48 million kangaroos and in Uruguay there are 3,457,380 inhabitants. So if the kangaroos decide to invade Uruguay, each Uruguayan will have to fight 14 kangaroos.

    She's just regurgitating the tired anthem of the alarmists everywhere.
    She's not offering sulotions nor ideas on how to solve anything.
    If she was 36, people wouldn't give two shits about her or what she's saying.
    It's sad though not surprising that adults now look to a sixteen year old for advice...

      It causes disruption and forces an issue to be confronted. No one expects those inconvenienced to be happy about it, just to look past their own nose at the wider issues at hand, and if possible effect positive change themselves.

      What alternative effective strategy would you suggest, especially as it looks like we have very little time even to mitigate the worse effects of climate change? Extinction Rebellion (XR) do NOT want to inconvenience workers, but they are out of options.
      If governments ignore even huge non-disruptive protests, ignore overwhelming scientific warnings from 97% of peer reviewed climate scientists, fail to meet even their too modest 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference commitments, cut funding climate research, allow fracking, deregulate the fossil fuel industry that's known about this for decades, promote expansion of flying, legal review fails, etc, etc, then peaceful disruptive civil disobedience is the logical next step.
      Obviously in every movement there are a wide variety of members, not all of which are great ambassadors for their cause (inevitably the only ones focussed on by much mainstream media & the fossil fuel lobbyists).
      However, below is a quote from a protester posting his personal account of why he was protesting, and what happened when he was arrested. facebook.com/JNFClimate/posts/2047647838861263
      "So this was my home for a few hours last night. [Photo of a prison cell interior].
      XR advises people that they do not have to give their names and should say “no comment” to questions. My position is very different because I am retired, risk little by being arrested and I want my day in court. So I complied fully with all police requests for information.
      When my time came, the police approached me and gave me the required number of warnings. I said that I would not move and so they told me I would now be arrested. They asked me to stand up, I didn’t say anything, other than to thank the person next to me for their support. It took 6 officers to pick me up and carry me out of the crowd.
      On the edge of Oxford Circus, just getting beyond the main body of protesters, the police nearly dropped me. Head first. One officer was very concerned and asked for help from other officers. I reassured him by apologising and joking that I really need to lose some weight.
      As I got to the police van the police asked me if I would walk onto the van. I agreed and apologised for being a nuisance but felt this was something I had no choice but to do.
      On the police van there were two other Earth protectors. We all had different ways of handling the situation. Mine was to be quiet, answer all questions when asked and always add that I had no choice but to take this action. I had been forced to do it to prevent mass loss of life.
      When I arrived at the police station my two arresting officers became very chatty. There were so many protesters being arrested that the processing would take a couple of hours. I spoke to them about their priorities and how I understood that they would rather be out on the streets protecting the public from knife crime; and they must see me as a real nuisance. But I had plenty of time to explain that: -
      • I had never been arrested before;
      • I read the science and I know mass loss of life has begun and it will get a lot worse;
      • I have tried every lawful action I could possibly think of but none of it has worked;
      • I have a 1 year old grandson & I do not believe the youngest members of the police officers’ families and my family can survive what is coming;
      • I had helped to launch and helped to pay for a Judicial Review of the government’s CC policies, but the courts had refused to protect my family and the world’s most vulnerable populations; so
      • I was left with no other choice but to take this action.
      There was a lot of paperwork and questions involved when we stood before the duty sergeant at the desk. Most of it is about the arrested person’s welfare.
      During the questioning process I again apologised for the inconvenience & time caused to the police but I had been forced to take this action. In between questions and answers I took appropriate moments to repeat the reasons why I felt I had to do what I did. I was not abrasive; I was polite, respectful and made sure I conveyed the basics of my reasoning.
      The sergeant offered me my chance to make the one permitted phone call, which I did to Anita, my wife. Before doing so I confirmed that it would be impossible to say, at this moment, how long I would be detained. The Sergeant said that if he was coming off duty at the same time as I got out he would buy me a pint.
      The female arresting officer was free to leave and thanked me and wished me well before she departed. A few minutes later the male arresting officer was told he could then leave and he too wished me well.
      I was then off to the cell. The chap who put me in the cell asked if I wanted water and anything to eat. I said I really needed a drink of water but didn’t want to make a fuss by asking for food. He insisted it was no fuss at all, got me the water and later came back with the hot food. Very polite and considerate indeed.
      After 30 minutes I was called out to see my appointed solicitor. Bindmans. I reminded the solicitor that he [and] I had worked together before - on the Plan B Earth Judicial Review application. The solicitor told me that all those arrested today were going to be released, “pending further investigation”. He suspected that no further action would be taken and I would probably merely receive a letter through the post with no need to be interviewed, charged or spoken to again. If charged, he would represent me.
      I explained that I had done everything lawful I could possible do to try to avoid catastrophic loss of life: - petitions, letters to MPs, government ministers, The Queen, issued tens of thousands of campaigning leaflets, and even tried a Judicial Review, through Plan B Earth & Bindmans. My defence would be that I acted through “necessity” - I know the magistrate’s house is on fire and I need to act to save the lives of his grandchildren on the top floor. I am no different to the fireman who turns up at the scene of the fire, breaks down the front door to go upstairs and save the lives of the children on the top floor.
      I want my day in court to explain that to the magistrates, and make the point that I asked the judiciary to act, but it refused to protect my family and the world’s most vulnerable people.
      The solicitor thanked me for the actions I have taken in the past and the action I took today to hold Oxford Circus. He was genuinely grateful to all protesters.
      At around 11pm I had to see the appointed nurse to be given my medication (I took my blood pressure medication and asthma inhaler with me in case I was arrested). In the presence of the nurse I then took the medication.
      I went back to the cells and lay down hoping to get a little sleep. Unfortunately ( ! ), just I was settling down, the police officer returned and said I was to be released.
      I went back to the sergeant’s desk where all my belongings were returned to me, I was asked if I could get home (yes), taken down the stairs and released into the loving arms of the XR volunteers who hang around police stations all night, in the cold, waiting for people to be released.
      I wanted to get home to Anita so thanked the volunteers for their offer of accommodation in the XR flat and headed to Liverpool Street. I caught the last train and by amazing coincidence I bumped into my son who had to work insanely late in the City. But there was a rail bus replacement service from Shenfield to Southend and so I didn’t get to my station until 02.39 and home by 03.00. So it would have been more sensible to take up the XR offer of a bed at the flat.
      I did the March for Life on Sunday, followed by three full days of protesting on the streets, so my joints, particularly my knees, are very painful. I am in quite a bit of pain. I will rest today and return to the streets tomorrow."

Or, more likely, she was driven to an airport, where she boarded a jet airliner which flew her to the UK, where she used a taxi to bring her into London. How much greenhouse gas was discharged into the atmosphere to bring this little preacher over to lecture us? If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem!

      Good for her. However, she got to the UK somehow. If she travelled by train, boat or taxi, then she created greenhouse gases. Electric vehicles produce emissions indirectly by utilising electricity generated by power stations. Please don’t come back with a lot of guff about wind power - most electricity is still generated by gas or coal. Nuclear is the only truly clean energy source, but l’m sure Wee Greta won’t like that either. Personally l don’t want to be lectured by a preachy little kid, by wealthy gap year students or by virtue-signalling ‘celebrities’. Here's some silly myths and how to counter them. The stuff being posted on this thread is laughable and ancient. The points being made were disproved 20 years ago.
    skepticalscience.com/argument.php
    George Monbiot is one of my favourite writers on the subject of scepticism (which I'm very guilty of):
    "The commonest current excuse is this: “I bet those protesters have phones/go on holiday/wear leather shoes.” In other words, we won’t listen to anyone who is not living naked in a barrel, subsisting only on murky water. Of course, if you are living naked in a barrel we will dismiss you too, because you’re a hippie weirdo. Every messenger, and every message they bear, is disqualified on the grounds of either impurity or purity."
    Monbiot is right of course, although I disagree with our chances of adaptation. It is undoubtably good to do what you can in the time we have left. Hopefully you'll feel better, even if it makes no difference in the end.
    "There is no going back: the alternative to capitalism is neither feudalism nor state communism. Soviet communism had more in common with capitalism than the advocates of either system would care to admit. Both systems are (or were) obsessed with generating economic growth. Both are willing to inflict astonishing levels of harm in pursuit of this and other ends. Both promised a future in which we would need to work for only a few hours a week, but instead demand endless, brutal labour. Both are dehumanising. Both are absolutist, insisting that theirs and theirs alone is the one true God."
    Let's smash capitalism, the evil system that has brought us to this terrible moment. I can't see us developing as a species until we put our animalistic selfish instincts away. We can end it calmly and sanely, even if that's too late for the bio-diversity of this planet. Let it go.

This was later endorsed by the Carter administration. If we had switched course in those times, mitigation would remain a viable trajectory. Now though, we can only prepare for the extinction of our way of living. Most animal life will not survive and human civilisation could easily end. This phase of hydocarbon use is done, any actions we take now are futile. But thanks for playing!

That means that further actions can legally be taken by "climate protestors" in future citing the parliamentary vote. It is no small victory, though what happens now is uncertain.
