New Yorkers have a dark sense of humor. They don't think that pollution is non-serious, they just laugh kind of darkly when people call them out on their pollution problem, as if to say "Yeah, we know, you caught us... it's embarrassing." They're laughing that she's being very frank and doesn't mind pointing out something in an "undiplomatic" way, which generally New Yorkers enjoy, even at their own expense. Most of this audience is very much in favor of seeing climate change as a fact and doing better for the environment. But the very corrupt power structure that keeps things the way things are has left many New Yorkers disenchanted, and so we/they (and Americans in general), tend to laugh at our problems. There's that saying-- you can cry or you can laugh, either way it sucks.
I think she was trying to downplay it after all that laughter. New York doesn't quite smell like pollution, instead, it would be more accurately described as PEE, EVERYTHING SMELLS LIKE SUN-BAKED PEE, I COME FROM A TROPICAL THIRD WORLD COUNTRY'S MOST POPULATED CITY AND EVEN HERE IT DOESN'T SMELL LIKE PEE, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU NYC PEOPLE?!
When I went to India, first I went to Goa very close to the beach and the jungle. Next stop was Delhi...let me tell you, you could really smell the difference/pollution and while Delhi surely is more polluted than NY, I get what she says and I don’t doubt her words.
FINALLY a host that actually lets Greta talk a little about what’s happening with the climate. Most other interviewers have mostly focused on her as a person. Great job, both Trevor and Greta!

They’re treating her like a little, frail girl that can’t possibly answer ”difficult science questions.” Studies show that women in general get that kind of treatment in media more often than men. Men get to talk about actual issues, and therefore appears to be smarter. Women get asked more about emotions, family, or other ”softer issues”. This affects both womens’ and mens’ views of womens’ capacity in general. One of many, many phenomenon that adds to the gender inequality we still have. Greta has been studying the climate issue for 7-8 years now, with an intensity of an Asperger’s... She’s as close to an expert as anyone can come, without being a scientist! She SHOULD be asked about the climate, every single interview!

I don't know you and your life circumstances and therefore don't know how that attitude developed and will certainly not be able to convince you otherwise, so I won't argue with you. Trevor isn't making a lot of eye contact in general. That's not necessarily a thing outside of America. In fact it's often considered rude to make direct eye contact.

Absolutely. Everyone comments negatively about the cost of Bernie's climate plan, but they really don't take into consideration how much more it'll cost if we don't do something like what he's planning.
Bernie would be the worst choice for climate change. He wants to phase out all nuclear power plants immediately, which currently generate 50% of all our carbon free energy. Whenever nuclear plants are closed they get replaced with fossil fuels, not renewables. Since closing the nuclear plant in his home state a few years ago, Vermont carbon emissions have gone up 16%. Discontinuing nuclear power on a national scale would be a disaster for the climate. Bernie is stuck in the 60s, we should be looking to the future. Statistically nuclear is actually the safest form of energy, even more than wind and solar. Look up Bill Gates’s TED talk on nuclear power if you want to learn more.

One individual person choosing to go green will not change the environment on their own, but that's not why she's doing all of this. There's a good analogy of a man trying the impossible task of pushing a boulder, where he gives every ounce of his energy to do so. He sees success in not moving the boulder, but convincing people that together, doing something such as moving a massive boulder (a seemingly impossible task), as difficult as it may seem, can be accomplished if we work together. One person can't change the world, but one person can influence others to help change it together.

CBS gave her less than a minute, had 3 people asking her questions, and one interviewer even asked her about her "hunger strike." This young lady deserves more respect. I totally agree. Mediators were not there to listen. They wanted to control the message and get their voices heard instead of Greta's voice. Hunger strike ? I wonder did they bothered to take 5 minutes to prepared for this interview with an amazing young mind.

Greta usually is very serious, focused and quite dry, humourwise. Trevor shows great hosting skills as to give her space enough to release her humourous side.
i love how she actually answers the questions, after seeing so many politicians just evading questions or keep repeating their own talking points as if they didn't even hear the question.
That's because they were all softball questions. Trevor didn't ask about the plane flights her boat's crew will take for the return trip. He also didn't touch on the fact that her boat is made of plastic and carbon fiber, and therefore actually has a huge carbon footprint. He also didn't wonder aloud why she couldn't just use the internet and video-conference to address a summit on another continent, the way tons of people do every day. That boat trip was a publicity stunt for fact-free people to tweet about. Have you seen her boat ? Where do you think they shat ? That thing doesn't have a toilet. Ask anyone who's sailed that kind of boat where your piss and shit go. And this was a 15-day trip. I was a guest speaker at a hospital in Karachi years back. One of the doctors asked me, " what do you dislike about Pakistan"? Replying, I relyed the experiance of when my driver drove over a bridge and I couldn't see one drop of water as it was choked with garbarge. They don't think that pollution is non-serious, they just laugh kind of darkly when people call them out on their pollution problem, as if to say "Yeah, we know, you caught us... it's embarrassing." They're laughing that she's being very frank and doesn't mind pointing out something in an "undiplomatic" way, which generally New Yorkers enjoy, even at their own expense. Most of this audience is very much in favor of seeing climate change as a fact and doing better for the environment. But the very corrupt power structure that keeps things the way things are has left many New Yorkers disenchanted, and so we/they (and Americans in general), tend to laugh at our problems. Studies show that women in general get that kind of treatment in media more often than men. Men get to talk about actual issues, and therefore appears to be smarter. Women get asked more about emotions, family, or other ”softer issues”. This affects both womens’ and mens’ views of womens’ capacity in general. Like state-wide radio hosts or the like. They're local actors and singers in a small country that actually taxes the wealthy, not some sort of cabal of backroom multinational CEOs.
And it's a false dichotomy to say individual action and holding the wealthy and the rest of us responsible are somehow mutually exclusive, or that one is important but the other one isn't (even though she absolutely has been calling out businesses and governments as well). Trevor, himself, speaks multiple languages, so he has empathy for speakers of a different language. Most Americans have trouble speaking English, let alone a second language, plus patience is not something that Americans understand.

American audiences laugh and "whoop" at everything. It's really annoying. One of the most annoying things is when there's a slow, sincere passage in a song during a music performance - during those quieter parts, US audiences start whooping. Really annoying.

@@annagallus8544 You hit the nail on the head. She's not speaking her native tongue, so it's a little tougher to convey your thoughts and feelings when the question has to be translated to your language, and a repose had to be instantly created in a different language on the spot.
Trevor isn't making a lot of eye contact in general. That's not necessarily a thing outside of America. In fact it's often considered rude to make direct eye contact.
Lyra Serpentine in all honesty, Trevor often does not make direct eye contact with many guests. It always throws me off a bit. It works here, but he often does it w/ people not in her position.

Bernie would be the worst choice for climate change. He wants to phase out all nuclear power plants immediately, which currently generate 50% of all our carbon free energy. Whenever nuclear plants are closed they get replaced with fossil fuels, not renewables. Since closing the nuclear plant in his home state a few years ago, Vermont carbon emissions have gone up 16%. Discontinuing nuclear power on a national scale would be a disaster for the climate. Bernie is stuck in the 60s, we should be looking to the future. Statistically nuclear is actually the safest form of energy, even more than wind and solar. Look up Bill Gates’s TED talk on nuclear power if you want to learn more.

He also didn't touch on the fact that her boat is made of plastic and carbon fiber, and therefore actually has a huge carbon footprint. That boat trip was a publicity stunt for fact-free people to tweet about. Have you seen her boat ? Where do you think they shat ? That thing doesn't have a toilet. -start a small garden
-set your thermostat to 75° in the summer 69° in the winter
-take short showers
-stop eating fast food if possible
(Eat at eco friendlier ones instead Chipotle is one of them)
-compost if possible
-switch to safety razors
-buy bar soap and shampoo
-don't water your lawn
-consider becoming vegetarian/vegan or a flexatarian (eating meat on special occasions)
-buy clothes used
-learn to sew
There are so many and not all will work for your life but there are plenty that will. Find what works for you and start there.

Fight for and create laws that fight corporate waste. You could completely stop creating polluting waste as an individual -- ALL of us could -- and the corporations and their waste and pollution would still destroy the planet. We need to call massive corporations to account for the damage THEY do.

One use plastic bags are banned in New Zealand now - apart from some funny moments carrying too much to the car when we forget to take our own reusable bags and don't want to buy another, it's been way easier than expected. No need for them at all.
