2021 Specialized Tarmac SL7 | Devastatingly Effective, Single-Minded Venge Killer 🔪

  • The 2021 Specialized Tarmac SL7 is here and it marks the end of the great aero versus weight divide for the brand, with the new model replacing both the existing Tarmac SL6 and the more aero-focused Venge as the brand’s flagship race bike.
    The new Tarmac SL7 is also disc-only, and the top-flight S-Works bike is claimed to weigh just 6.7kg in Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 spec.
    It’s a fearsomely expensive, fearsomely effective speed machine that will delight go-fast riders with its ultra-stiff frame, sublime handling and engaging ride, but is it just too race-focussed for the more casual roadie?
    Senior writer, Matthew Loveridge digs deep and presents everything you need to know about this very special bike from it's integrated cockpit to the new FACT 12r carbon and larger tyre clearance. Have a question about the bike? Or do you want to shout about the price of the top spec model? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments!

    So, what do you think to the new Specialized Tarmac SL7? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments! 📌
    Matthew wanted to add some more information on the range for you:
    "There are actually two Tarmac SL7 Expert models, one with Ultegra Di2 and alloy wheels, one with mechanical Ultegra and carbon wheels, both cost £4,750 in the UK.
    "In addition, some markets get a cheaper Tarmac SL6 Base model with Shimano Tiagra that costs $2,000 / €2,199 plus a FACT 10r SL7 frameset option costing $3,000 / €2,999 / AU$4,500."

      I've owned a Tarmac years ago it was a nice bike, I currently ride an Allez sprint disc and I don't love it, even with upgraded kit it's still too heavy. This looks like the perfect bike for me as a cross between a nimble climbing bike but something that's still stiff under power.

      If you are good enough to ride one of these you are good enough to get one for free. The bike seems very modern and cutting-edge but the truth is looking like a pro and getting equipment like a pro is already very 2016/2017. Yes it may be a tomorrow bike, but reviews like this are straight out of the day before yesterday .

      I think the idea of an 'all round' race bike makes more sense for most riding. However I do think buying a frameset (and the necessary integrated bits) is the way to go for this.
      Want a bike for flat terrain? Super deep wheels.
      Want a bike for big climbs? Fit lighter components.

  • @PeakTorque
    @PeakTorque 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Industry gave up on pressfit because they couldn’t get a few SIMPLE tolerances correct. I pity this industry I really do. Threaded is a backwards step in engineering terms. Narrower chainstay width thus lateral stiffness , narrower bb shell, and the big elephant in the room, a bonded Alu BB shell which arguably poses more unknowns/QC issues than a well-done pf86. Pf86 just works. Just ask Giant.

    • @RB-xv4si
      @RB-xv4si 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree. Everyone has been hating on the pressfit style as an actual idea but it is objectively an improvement over threaded bottom brackets in every way. The problem has always been the execution of the pressfit frames and lack of QC. Frankly, it could just be a situation where the manufacturers could get the quality where it needs to be but, for instance, need to scrap 3/4 of frames before they even go out the door in order to uphold that standard. There would be no money to be made in that situation. I think it’s a rare situation where the engineering simply is exceeding manufacturing capabilities.

The industry hype about the "obvious improvement" disc brakes give road bikes is suspect (at best; plain old BS at worse). Manufacturers ought to rethink axing the rim brake versions of their upper-tier bikes or they risk losing a lot of sales to old guys like me that prefer the ease and simplicity of riding and servicing rim brake bikes. They are lighter & quieter too.

    "Specialized is trying to make this as practical as it's feasible given the limitations of hiding everything." - finally somebody openly admitting that integrated cables are a limitation. My respects for that. Not that people who actually bother building, upgrading and servicing their own bikes didn't know that already...
    I do understand this obsession to aerodynamically optimize every single bit of a bicycle when we're discussing top end bikes targeted at people actually racing them, for a living or not. But this integration plague has started to affect more and more lower-end bikes, bought by people who are far too fat or stiff to be aero enough to care about those 45 saved seconds, and it has to stop before bicycles become as complicated and time-consuming to service (or build) as cars or motorcycles.

      Good for both of you. Problem is other people care more about practicality than look, and still want a good quality frameset from a reputable brand, and because of this obsession with looks and minuscule aero gains there are less and less such options on the market. Have your fancy-looking three-times-harder-to-maintain frames if you wish so, but what are the reasonable people supposed to buy now?

    • @thomasbutcher3593

      @@thomasbutcher3593 I was not talking about getting an out and out race bike. I was talking about buying a mid-range full carbon road frameset (or bike) from a decent manufacturer that still routes all cables externally. There is none, or none that I can find. And those which are internally routed become more and more complicated to route and are less and less compatible with mechanical shifting and regular brakes.
      So in 5 years, simply because I don't want to spend money uselessly on Di2/eTap/hydrowhatever, I shouldn't be able to buy a decent full carbon frameset any longer? Just because racers have their needs and just because some people value looks over ease of installation and maintenance?

    I like that we seem to be moving from a aero / race split to a one bike for all reasons direction. Obviously we'll never have something that spans gravel / tour / aero / race in one bike but this new Tarmac, to me anyway, addresses the biggest dilemma. I've got a top of the range TCR that I love but the lack of aero bars on a bike with electronic shifting and hydraulic brakes is really annoying .. and that bird's nest of cables and traditional bar is the most significant reason I've been looking at aero bike alternatives. If the SL7 delivers to it's promises and the ride is less harsh the a Venge it'll be a winner.

    being in the industry myself and having close friends at prominent wheel and tire manufacturers. The reason they went back to tubes is because people are idiots. customers hyper analyze tubeless because they don't understand it and it kind of freaks them out. You lose 10 psi overnight where you wouldn't have with tubes and people want to warranty their entire wheelset, an immeasurablly small hole that doesn't leak and the tire is getting warrantied. Ive seen people accidentely seal the rim and blow it up with the air compressor sending carbon splinter everywhere while trying to seat the tires. Conti 5000s aren't even compatible with half the rims on the market. There is no real standard. So they are gonna let other brands handle these messy years and pay the price with increased customer support costs and ride it out until tubeless is more standardized and work better on the road. Obviously tubeless is better if you aren't neurotic about it and have wrapped your head around the pros and cons but many are not that way.

      @The Mig Cycling Cars have longer set standards, weight is also not an issue with car tires or wheels like it is in cycling, beads can be stiffer, wider, bead shelf can be more aggressive because you aren't trying to hit crazy weight goals (and im not talking crazy like sub 1300grams im talking crazy like sub 2500grams all bike wheels have to be very very light relativley speaking), because cars have more power and you aren't expected to make a product that can be installed on the side of the road, you have tire machines that do it in a shop. comparing cycling tech to car or motorcycle tech is pretty much inherently invalid. the bb thing just comes down to cost. Half the reason your car loses 10 psi over the course of 6 months instead of 1 day also comes down to the fact that it has a MUCH higher volume of air. so lost air has less of an effect on pressure.

This Varmac is 45 secs faster over 40km than the SL6 but the Sworks Roubaix is 10 secs faster then the SL6. Put if you fit the S-WORKS AEROFLY II you get back another 20 secs over the standard bars. So the Roubaix is only 15 secs slower then the Varmac. OH wait add either the CLX50's or the new Rapides the wheels and it is probably as fast or faster just with bigger tyres clearances and the future shock. The cockpit is actually a two-piece unit, so bike fitters can rest easy on this. Besides, riders can run any cockpit they like if they wish.
      I tried to find whatever I can hate greatly on this bike, but I couldn't. Ultimately, if I were given a choice of taking just ONE S-Works frameset for my build, chances are, I might take the Tarmac SL7, and I'm saying this as a Venge-biased cyclist.

It was foreseeable when the venge started to look more like the tarmac a few years back, and I won't be jumping on to a specialized tarmac over a venge at all. On top of that, talk about expensive. Jeez. Way to make a carbon bike accessible to people, good job apple, I mean specialized.

    One thing strikes me, though: Why did speci made such a huge cutout in the seat tube? Even with a 32 mil tyre, there´d be plenty of space between tube and tyre. Compared to the clearance that the cervelo S5 offers at this place (which seems to little to me, though), Specialized constructed a massive clearance. Not the best in terms of aero, is it?

    Nice! Does look mighty similar to the latest Scott Addict though. I’ve got an SL6 S-Works Tarmac with Roval CL50s and run tubeless on them. I put the 26mm turbo rapide tyres on them too. However, don’t think their tubeless technology is quite where it needs to be. Had to send wheel back within two months of receiving. Some problem with the spokes it seems (ping when go uphill!?). Secondly, despite lots of faffing tyres don’t hold air for more than 24 hours. I’d have gone for some Zipps if I’d had my time again.

    I think this bike is mightily impressive. Great to see where 'we' have come in such a short amount of time in terms of integrating aero. No more cumbersome to deal with than your average climbing special, light enough to leave anyone without an excuse on that climb and pretty much as fast as last year's all out aero weapon around The Netherlands. That said, it's a bit sterile. It wil no doubt appeal to your dentist. I however, will not be pissing my pants out of pure excitement when this rolls past for the first time. Instead, I will glance over at my very imperfect but lovely purple Allez Sprint and appreciate it even more than I do now.

  • @tristano1998

    We have a rider in our grupetto running with the SL6 (not S-works) with disc brakes and the sram force groups. His bike is not the lightest, but the rider is, and he´s very fast on the flats and always first up a mountain summit! - Personnaly so far the Venge S-Works was my „dream bike“ for flat and mildly hilly courses, but now that specialized has merged the venge and tarmac into one, dropping also the weight, i think the new model would be my choice over the former venge. Because „aero“ is not so important in respect to my average speeds ranging from 30 to 34 kms. And personally i believe you get the most aero savings from the rims anyway. Furthermore i very much like specialized´s decision on the bottom bracket! Great opportunity to get your desired, long-term durable, very lightly running BB! - As i have already put it since 2 years, the industry will be going to „integrated“ solutions (cable-wise) more and more, so for me it is no surprise that specialized came up with an integrated tarmac, too. Since the cable integration was the only „real“ visible difference to the venge, the decision to offer only one model now came naturally and consequently. Yeah, very high price, but i would go for the SL7 S-Works, presumably with the DA-DI2-Groupset Version. First, i like the red/black colours more than green, secondly the DA is better in terms of spare part supply. And 11 gears is enough for me and i can swap cogs around my other bikes. The price is exceptionally high, but this would be my „last“ road bike for at least the next 5 years, having then this one for everyday training (also in wet conditions), plus an extra very lightweight fuji SL for the mountains (only around 6,5 kg fully equipped), a crossbike for „nature“ and a commuter bike for the city. Voila!
