The new Specialized Tarmac SL7 Comp uses SRAM’s latest Rival eTap AXS groupset to become the most affordable SL7 currently available, but does this entry-level model still offer the performance of the range-topping S-Works models that will be raced in the Tour de France? In this review I set out to find the answer

I have a sl7 expert. I put Roval C-38 wheels on it with 28mm tires. I got more comfort with wider tires and lower psi with tubeless. I agree with how fast it is. It practically begs to be ridden fast!

I can buy a 2021 sl7 expert with 10% off. I can switch the wheels from Roval C38 to zipp 404 firecrest. Its a cheaper wheel, should i change it or is the Roval way better? And do you also have mechanical ultegra? How does the mech ultegra hold up in sprints and races?

Good video, but like others I take exception with the comments on weight. 8.6kg inc pedals is something you'd notice every time you accelerate, stomp on the pedals, not just up mountains vs a 6.6kg rim tcr for same money not so long ago. The feel of a lighter bike is absolutely detectable and 2kg excess DOES blunt the feel. Wheels not aero, nor 30mm tyres, but ok that saddle is nice. Love the Power..😀

Got this exact same bike last month. Same size, same colour. It’s looks amazing in the sun. Upgraded wheels to Roval C38 with RapidAir 28mm tires set up tubeless. Have the Roval Rapide carbon aero bar on back order. Very happy with this bike so far. My mate rides the SWorks with Red eTap and Roval Alpinist wheels and for more than twice the price of my bike, it’s definitely not twice as good.

@@TurnLeftNow My LBS contacted me the day the recall was announced. Gave me the update and said would be in contact when parts arrived. 6 days later, another call saying I could bring the bike in. Took it the next day. 4 hours later, collected my bike with new parts, detailed report with pictures showing my steerer had no signs of damage and it had been washed and lubed. All this for the massive sum total of zero dollars. Had a follow up call from LBS a week later to ensure all was ok. So to be honest, Specialized handled this extremely well and I cannot fault them here.

    • @ZachGrabill

This is the downside IMO. I was able to get a frame and put on some carbon wheels that I already had. The wheels are just a blatant cost-cutting measure that, frankly, Specialized should be ashamed of. But with my set up it's just over 16.5 lbs, an absolute rocket ship.

Great review Dave, just what I was thinking about it. Its a great looking bike (except those wheels 🙄)
I just think they could’ve come up with something better at this price point, say some better 40mm carbon wheels. Where as Trek have done that! The Emonda SL6 is fast, comfy and beats it on the spec. It’s a hundred grams heavier but as it’s cheaper so you’d have money left over to buy a few carbon bits and lose that and more.

4500 pounds for a nearly 9 kg heavy (with pedals and other bits and pieces) road bike, and people actually order it. That's the weight of a sub 1000 pound road bike from 10 years ago. Unbelievable how gullible some people can be. I can only wonder how further downhill can the cycling industry go.

The bike industry is bulls$$g people with aero and disc brakes so they can have people pay $10k+ for a reasonably light weight bike. My Focus Cayo Evo rim brake bike I bought 5 years ago on closeout for $2200 with Di2 weighs17 lbs 2 oz complete with pedals, cages and mount. Not to mention my Tarmac SL3 Project Black Limited Edition with Ultegra 10 speed and 50mm extra spoked carbon clinchers weight 16lbs 8 0z complete. In my almost 40 years of riding have I never seen the bike industry add weight while charging more. It is insane. CYCLING IS THE NEW GOLF ⛳

Prices went up 800 euro within a 1/2 years time for a bike i was looking at last year. Thanks to covid, less production and higher demand. Couldn’t of put it better. I’ve raced and ridden for the same amount of years. I rode at a decent level and riding years ago was just as fast and when turning up at a race we never looked at the bikes only the riders. No it’s carbon this, 3k plus wheels it’s total marketing bs. I always looked at golfers posing with Pringles on wasting money etc, definitely a good comparison. Also who used to insure their bikes? A decent rider used to turn up in the winter on a training frame with mudguards and go hard as hell. How many idiots ride through the winter on their race bikes?? The cycle world now is full of spoilt dumb asses who don’t know much, only what the media tells them. 🤪

@@murcielago188 you must have been living under a rock last year.. i was looking for a new bike, colnago c60 was one of them. Close to 6500 euro for a rim brake version with cheap rims etc. With nice paints etc it was close to 7000. Thats way more than this one. Don’t even mention the c60 disk brake version with di2… c59 should be compared to tarmac sl6. The tarmacs are cheaper than colnago’s.. colnago’s always were more expensive. Then buy a secondhand old light bike, nobody will stop you. You guys always complain about the bike weight like you already have achieved 3% body fat. The modern bike heavier than the older one because it has disc brake, which is way way safer. It's a give and take here. DB bike is heavier but you can use it safely during rainy season, it's called compromise. RimBrake bike is way way lighter and cheaper yeah, but when you use it during rainy or winter season, you'll endanger yourself. I'm not a DB fan until my tarmac sl3 almost force me use a wheelchair for the rest of my life. If you said you won't cycle in winter or whatever, that's also a compromise right? DB system is more expensive than RB because it has more parts obviously. Frame wise, the weight will be almost the same, you won't see a 3 kg carbon bike frame just because it use DB. Specialized frame is expensive yeah, but maybe it's because they give you a lifetime warranty. I don't think bike frame industries have balls to do it 5 years ago.

Thank you David for another excellent review, and a question: to what extent, do you think, the lesser comfort of the Tarmac compared to eg Filante or TCR could be down to the tires? Did it still feel less comfortable than those even when you road it on the Zipp 454s, with tubeless 28s and lower pressure? I'm in the process of deciding between Filante and SL7, to be ridden on the same crumbling Cotswolds road you ride on, so that's a critical consideration...

I have exactly the same bike. I got it for 5.600€. Before I have driven a Canyon Endurace CF 7 (2000€) for about 8 years and more then 40.000 km. My first experience in comparision to my simple old canyon is, that is not that faster as I expected. It is more harder meaning less convenience when driving. Driving montains I can say by now my old canyon is the same. In the plain it is possible that the SL7 is a little ittle bit faster. I am talking about 2 - 3 % and definitive no more. Summing up I am a little disappointed about and the price is to much for what I am getting.

How much of the comfort/compliance issues do you think are down to the wheel/tire setup that comes stock? I would bet most people buying this kind of bike already have a nice set of wheels or would be upgrading soon anyways.

That's a good question. I did spend time riding the bike on different carbon wheels I'm testing with 28mm tyres at 60-65psi but the ride was still firm and full of feedback compared to other bikes that manage to be smoother with the same setup. The wide tyres definitely help though

Nice review, looking through the comments you can see that people buy bikes based on two things, parts lists and weight, comparing the weight of what was available 10 years ago is not the answer. Technology has moved on, its aerodynamics, material compliance, geometry.
Going purely by weight and parts will get you a nicely speccd light bike, but not necessarily a fast one

@@stevetee4145 Late reply I know, but an important one. I have just gone from a 2015 Emonda SLR rim brake that weighed 6.7kg 1(4lbs 8oz in old/US speak) to an S Works Tarmac SL7 that is 7kg (15lbs 4 oz). If we used weight as the sole metric, it would seem I have gone backwards. However, I am significantly faster on the Tarmac. I would consider myself a decent rider - I held about 23.2mph over a 15 mile solo time trial over undulating roads. The same route I now hold 24.8mph for the same effort. 1.6mph faster may not seem much, but at my level it is very welcome and 2mins30secs faster over just a 15 mile distance is a huge deal.

Frame with not so good compliance, aluminum stem/non-aero handlebar, another kilogram more due to the rather cheap group set I suppose, low-profile aluminum rims, and then 5000 eur? Does not sound like a good deal. Seems like ppl are willing to pay A LOT for the brand name. It almost seems to me you might even get a better, lighter and much cheaper bike if you take a really nice aluminum frame, and combine it with good carbon parts (seat stay, stem, handlebar, wheels) and a DI2.

I think this particular bike will feel a lot more comfortable with a wider rim and 30mm tyre. The head tube is a bit long for me on the 56cm so not something I'll buy unfortunately.
