  • In this project, I set out to see if you could assemble a usable EDC Kit for very little cost. I think beginner kits like this would make excellent gifts to people just getting into EDC or preparedness.
Lifeline Pouch and First Aid Supplies $5
    Coast Pocket Knife $6.20
    Jute Stick/Boxcutter $1.50
    LED Light $0
    Bic Mini Lighter $1.50

I'm slowly amassing my "normal" edc kit.
    The final EDC:
    - Streamlight Microstream
    - homemade flashlight diffuser
    - marine whistle
    - paracord keychain (sometimes supplemented with a paracord bracelet)
    - keychain flashlight (kind of crappy, but sometimes, you don't want to get a larger flashlight out)
    - Swiss Army Knife
    - medical kit (thyroid medicine, duct tape, painkillers, allergy medicines, sterile gauze, alcohol prep pads, nail cutters, dental floss, antiboitic ointment (cheap, but works))
    - an Ontario RAT2 folding knife
    - wallet with money/cards/ID
    - extra AAA battery for the Microstream
Depending on where I go, I'd add a few things:
    - Sawyer mini water filter system
    - credit card diamond sharpening stone
    - cell phone
I was thinking of making a $20 one (minus the pocket knife) for a friend. My list for this: alcohol prep pads, sterile gauze/bandages, duct tape (stuck to parchment paper), box cutter with jute twine, cheapy flashlight ($2 at the Dollar store here), and a mini-bic lighter with more jute twine.
I might invest in another Streamlight Microstream for my buddy although, making this effectively cost $22 + $6, as well. I would probably sew a drawstring style bag for my friend as well, and tuck in a few free garbage bags as well.

The best budget survival kit I've seen so far. Will duplicate the kit & put it to the test next time I'm on the field. Great idea mate, not many folks can afford a full survival kit & first aid. You've given them a good start & reason to head out. Cheers mate. Greetings from Australia.

The only problem with this little kit is that I'm addicted to my Leatherman.

Hi man, I was waiting something similar from you.
I liked the video because of the philosophy behind it. Not everyone needs a expensive micro edc or maybe he can't effort it.
Another point, and that's my case, is that maybe people for edc (it means something you can easily lose) don't want to carry with them a 100 bucks of stuff. I know that you have to buy something that last and can bear some hard works but for 20-30 dollars/euro you can find some decent stuff.
In my case I substituted the box opener with some needles and threads, superglue and some rubber coated wires (to close up things).
Used as containers those rigid cases for photographers, you can find them for 1 euros in sale.

Haha what a coincidence, today I decided to specifically carry a budget kit. An 80's Vic Spartan I got used on ebay for ~$5.50, a Ultrafire/SK68 Flashlight at about $3.50 and a Sheffield rescue knife I picked up at Walmart for $5. Granted, I'm not counting all the crap on my keys and in my wallet, but you can still do pretty well even without a lot of money.

I second your statement; WAJK made a good point there by presenting this video. It clearly shows that proper mentality + common sense + minimum elaboration, can result to "infinite possibilities" (as WAJK likes to say). Cheers.

Thanks for this one. I just found a drawer full of diabetic glucose test kits in nylon, zip-up, pouches. I threw away all the old meters and accessories, but the pouches were too nice to throw away and I was trying to figure out what to do with them. I'm still hoping that you will get around to testing the SmittyBilt trail axe tomahawk. They have added to their line and now have an M9 bayonet, a survival knife, a multi tool, and a machete that looks just like the Ken Onion machete from CRKT. Meanwhile, I have 8 or 10 EDC kits to build. Cheers.

I picked up a British army webbing first aid kit for next to nothing as they're phasing out the DPM pattern equipment and the markets flooded at present, the EDC goes in there and that goes in my rucksack, this isn't always ideal and I can see where your kit would be better. I would add a button compass to your kit as there's just some places that make you loose your sense of direction (or is that just me??).

Well done, nice vid. Not everyone has the cash to spare for the expensive stuff, so it's good to see the budget options. Although my EDC is not what I'd call budget, it's not that expensive either. It just has a few good quality items. Nothing really flash and costly, but each item has earned it's place. But I do know people who have very little money to spend on such things, and this vid will be of great use to people in that situation.

    • @astrangeone
      @astrangeone 9 ปีที่แล้ว

zednotzee7 I plan for my edc items to last for a lifetime. Mostly the folding pocket knife I'm getting in the mail costs a fair bit of money (the Ontario RAT 2), but I hope it does last.

    • @zednotzee7
      @zednotzee7 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Ontario make a good product, and the RAT series has a good reputation, so it should last for quite a while. Depends what you do with it and how you treat it tbh.

In a comment someone said they couldn't find that Coast knife. Well today I was looking to start a micro EDC kit, and dug up a knife which was basically the exact same, and I had gotten it at a National Park many years ago; one of the ones they have whole racks of, both plain and with peoples names on them. So that sort of knife is definitely still out there even if that particular Coast isn't.
Also an idea: I'm sure a number of people have oldish digital cameras they don't use anymore (because of smartphones), which had small cases, potentially with a belt loop. I found one in my house, and I plan to use the case on my belt as a low profile micro EDC kit! It might look a wee bit strange if someone saw it (though I expect to be wearing a jacket most of the time right now) however maybe some wouldn't think twice if they realized it's just a camera case.

Wear a jacket, put items in the pockets, instead of digging through a pouch to find stuff. Pouch is good to put into lunch bucket or carry in the car.

So guys, I'm a novice in more serious EDC. Let me explain: all my life, till recently (a few months back), I have always operated, anywhere (be it at work, be it in private, during vacation time etc) with a moderate EDC mindset, mainly by always carrying a pocket knife [a SAK; either a CAMPER or a CADET]. So, last year and in fact after adopting a hobby with paracord tying (bracelets and fobs), one thing led to another and the seemingly moderate mindset grew wild (LOL). By watching videos, reading fora, noting reviews and searching the market (both web and street), I had most beneficial epiphany in regard to EDC and realized the true personal value and potential. So, apart from starting to gather various gear for EDC, I also realized the importance of effective carrying. Key ring is an option, especially we refer to small and practical gear we all know one way or another. But, the concept of EDC when it comes "on one's person, finds its true meaning and value IF and WHEN one makes the decisive step to contemplate for a means of carrying (e.g. a pouch). So, as a novice, I started up by trying two different CASE LOGIC pouches (the ones meant for point'n'shoot cams), on my belt. The change of my EDC efficiency is amazing with either one and it has become a daily concern. Though it is becoming apparent that the choice of those pouches, very soon showed that their capacity is not enough... So, to date, I'm expecting the delivery of a pocket organizer (spacious enough to neatly keep my gear for immediate deployment and small enough to carry it on my belt. EDC is a never ending process. What one gets in return is the relative, yet substantial status of capabilities to overcome daily awkward predicaments. Take care. George from Hellas.

MrDidaxi Sure, we ladies call that a purse. Granted some of us ladies let our purses turn into "garbage cans" - I know of one lady who basically dumped all her food reciepts into the purse. Gross, and ineffective too!
I love tying paracord (just finished with a couple of king solomon keyrings), and I've used them as well.
Basically, my purse holds what I can't in terms of my edc.
      - mini flashlight (35 lumens, single AAA battery)
      - extra AAA battery
      - gum
      - first aid kit (mainly lacerations + bus fare change taped to the inside)
      - paracord keyfob (used as a pull on my crappy purse zipper)
      Keys/lanyard:
      - keys (x2)
      - keychain flashlight (good if I don't want to break into my bigger light)
      - mini whistle (signals and gets people's attention)
      - swiss army knife (granted, this knife is dinky, but I mostly use it for SCISSORS)
      - work keys
      - GNC saver card
I will add a dedicated pocket knife to the mix, but I don't have much of an use of it either (it's just so that I don't have to deal with my dinky SAK knife).

Those are usually around 10 lumens and less, the Ozark trail version at Wal-Mart is 80 lumens. $1.88 and comes with batteries. I bought one and it's taken a beating, still working good and surprises everyone I show it to because of how much brighter it is than your typical 9 LED light that it appears to look like.
