I bought this game like two days before this video came out. Im so glad you're doing a video on it. Its a really cool game and i hope you play more of it!
This looks interesting. I wonder what the story is behind why the player character seems to be different from the other inhabitants of the world. Maybe the player really _is_ an alien. Or maybe they're like some kind of rare or near-extinct analog to elves or some kind of elder race? And what kind of mythology exists in this world? I rather like the trading mechanic, where you have to get some things through trade with villagers. Think of it like this… The village has people who have dedicated all their effort to a craft, as artisans. They have specialized their skills to reach the greatest heights of their craft, and depend on others to provide them with various necessities through trade, so that they can continue to practice their trade. Get enough people in one place, with a diverse enough set of specializations, and suddenly you have a civilization. Perhaps the player character is a type of being that has the potential to be an excellent generalist, easier. But they still shouldn't be able to do the kind of specialist things that someone who devotes their entire life to a skill can. Think of all the obscure knowledge that a clockmaker needed to craft a pocket watch by hand, before the industrial revolution made machining precise and reproducible. Or the skills needed to make a high quality, long lasting, illuminated book, back in the middle ages. A good illuminated book could be considered a masterwork, the same as a fancy and complicated clock.
The player character in this game is called a "Seraph", though the exact reasons aren't really given and there's no direct information about them. I've seen theories that the names are literal and that they're angels decended from the heavens or that they're aliens from another world (as in, coming from the sky or "heavens" as well). There's a bit of lore that seems to hint that the world is going through some sort of temporal instability and that time is subjective in some way. There's ruins that seem medieval as well as modern deeper in the ground. There's a literal temporal stability mechanic and temporal storms as well. Its possible the PC is a survivor of some temporal apocalypse, maybe flung into the far future or past or even another dimension altogether.
I really really would love to see you do a series on this! I can't remember who it was, but i've only ever seen one other person make an LP on this (someone who played minecraft at least) and it was last year, and in a much different version of the game. A LOT has changed, specifically, creative mode was added XD. The LP that I watched, Creative was "coming soon", and there wasn't this "temporal storm" mechanic either! I bought this game shortly after seeing that first LP, and it was only 10$, and it's gone up to 17$ (USD), so clearly it's gotten some attention. If I also remember right, there's Mod support for the game as well!
I do call this out in the intro that they are the makers of Vintagecraft which is similar to Terrafirmacraft and much older and likely inspired Terrafirmacraft.
@@MischiefofMice I can actually shed some light on this - I'm an old (very... very old...) hand at TFC and friends with the only original dev still in active work on it VintageStory was an idea from a TFC community member from back on the old Minecraft 1.7 version of TFC - they hung around on the old Discord and I believe were also on the TogetherWeThrive server, and they wanted to make a TFC addon but were constantly upset about the limitations imposed on the game by Java. Eventually they got well and sick of it and decided to make their own version of the mod with blackjack and C#, and in fact, forget the blackjack. This turned out to be a STUPENDOUS idea, because the main TFC developer - Bioxx - would soon make the disastrous decision, not to remake the mod for newer editions of Minecraft (that was a fine idea), but to take out all the actual fun parts (dude scrapped crops entirely and just made Pam's Harvestcraft a mandatory companion mod). This, combined with him just straight giving the hell up on the project halfway through and axeing TFC2 entirely, made VintageStory pretty much the only game in town so to speak. However, even though TFC2 is dead in the water, there ARE two other forks of the mod still in active development. TFC: The New Generation (abbreviated TFC:TNG) is a faithful remake of the original mod into Minecraft 1.12 made by old forum admin Dries007 with some slightly changed mechanics and a few new additions - basically, it's what Bioxx should have done with TFC2 but didn't... and TFC+ is a fork of the base MC1.7 mod, still in that old version, being actively developed by TFC's original co-author Dunkleosteus. And when I say actively developed, I mean the last update came out... _checks watch_ ...yesterday. It added sloped variants to roof tiles, cobble-paved roads, and some QoL regarding world generation. There's actually a whole separate wiki for the differences between TFC and TFC+ (which include domesticating animals from wild variants, making and wearing clothes to protect yourself the new temperature mechanics, teepees, and wattle & daub building material, just to name a few things). If you liked old TFC but wish development had continued on it, this is the exact thing you wished for and I hope you check it out You can join the official discord for it at discord.gg/CYCmnm where both Dunk AND Dries007 hang out - I'm sure they'd both be happy to tell you more
omg a few seconds on the game and the ost is kicking my feels already. i got it as soon as it was "pre released". the game is amazing and it has some tricks and tips for combat such as pillaring 2 blocks and using a spear to hit monsters guarantees most the victories edit: important tip. if you make a torch (you used to spawn with 1) you can use it in your off hand to get some lightning going on and see where are you going. this game IS REALLY DARK at night and caves the only downside i see in this game is minerals and how to find them. minerals early on are super scarce, you can make a prospectors pick but it's pointless... you have NO way to know if there's items or not there, it just tells you "chances" so for example the chunk may have a really high chance to contain copper and in reality theres none at all in the chunk, and the exact oposite, you can find a chunk that says the chances are tiny and it can be stuffed to the brim. it is true you can find nuggets on the ground, pointing to where the copper veins are but you need a lot of nuggets to make a tool, and you don't allways find them all close. and the nugget trick only works for ultra-early game veins... good thing you can waypoint with commands (but it's a bit rudimentary, even the ui didn't use to work fine) and the fun part is that the ores have a quality rating so when you find something it may be poor, regular or enriched. a lottery uppon a lottery. don't get me wrong. i love the survival aspect of the game, it looks beautiful and the crafting system is amazing (specially the blacksmithing. I LOVE IT.) but for a new player the vein finding is a really step learning curve
