Very true that the next generation of trades people are ill equipped in many ways. We are hoping that these videos will inspire to think outside the box, apply and gather knowledge and begin the steps of training tomorrows restorers.

Albert Zuger is a frickin' mad scientist. He needs his own show.

Could also use a fusible alloy such as Indalloy 117, 158 or 255 (those are melting points in degF) whereas lead melts at 620degF. The first two can simply have hot water poured over them to release from inside of the tube. Keep up the interesting vids.

Obviously amazingly talented guys in bodywork etc, but I'm seeing what looks to be EMT tubing (conduit) for an exhaust? All of the work that went into this could have easily been done on a good quality Ercolina or Ineco bender other than the ends (with light radius bends marks or neck down would have been almost nil) or purchased steel or stainless mandrel bends and cut and welded like the end pieces on the flange? I enjoy seeing good work-arounds but when time is money spending a day on something that should be a few hours is costing money, not making it. If this was a guy at home that would be a clap on the back, this just seems to be a lot of extra work.

Approximately how much lead is used? I have a small motorcycle frame section I need to bend. I tried the same pipe bender and got bad results, this video has me wanting to try again.

If you haven't tried it already, or have and it still didn't work, try heating the pipe you're pouring into. Otherwise, the lead can cool and clog before a true fill can be achieved.

Can you fill the pipe with sand and get the same results?

Yes you can, but it needs to be damp sand and it must be tamped down tight, if not the sand will move. The results will very using sand depending on how tight of a pack you can make. Melting a lead substitute guarantees that the bend will produce the best results every time.

I am wondering, we have a Type 57 Ventoux in the workshop, with a non supercharged motor, but it has one thick beefy exhaust pipe on it front to back, why did this particular model have such small pipes on it?

On the Aerolithe, the exhaust was designed as an objet d'art, and not intentionally perfectly functional.

What's the rust preventative coating used at the end of the video?

      I think it's a Kalex urethane coating

Somebody think again. Urethane will not stand up to heat

Any particular reason why a shop like yours wouldn’t have an actual TUBING bender? You can pick up a bender from harbor freight for about $200 ( american).

      John Butler
: That 200$ bender won't do a mandrel bend . You will see the impression of the dye on the outside of the bend and it also reduces the internal pipe diameter . I am more surprised they don't have an actual mandrel bender for the cars they build !
