    I think I remember you saying that you used to be a teacher. Is a teacher myself now retired, who taught for 40 years. Years I can tell that you were a really good teacher. First of all, you managed to be very open, authentic and personal even though this is totally through an electronic medium.
    You have a gift of being able to disagree with people in a way that is at the same time accepting of their point of view. You restate their position fairly. You state your own position you acknowledge the good points of their position and make a calm and reasoned case for your own position which makes it very easy for people to be open to change their minds.
    In the same thing you are very open to seeing the other person's point of view and also to put yourself in there shoes, understand where they're coming from, and take that into account.
    You are a problem solver. You enjoy thinking and working your way through problems and you can step back and come at a problem from a completely different angle
    You love trying out new ideas. You are willing to adapt to new ideas, new approaches, in fact, you enjoy it. I don't think you were the kind of teacher that took out the same lesson plan book year after year, that you really wanted and needed to change things up, which is great for you and great for your students.
    You seem to be a person who can help students see and appreciate the good work they do and also lead them on to the next step.
    You would encourage students to do their own thinking, find their own ways of solving problems and celebrate their new understandings.
    You have such a joy in learning yourself that that would communicate itself to your students and make them value learning and growing and stretching yourself as much as you do.
    I don't know if your future plans might include going back to teaching, but if they do, I think that the teaching profession would be better for you being in it.

    The Heirloom Jumper by Fabel Knitwear is also gorgeous in darker colors! I feel like openwork lends itself really well to dark yarn. Potentially, holding a black yarn double with a colored mohair thread could also be very interesting visually and add even more depth to the color
    I tried to overdye this almost black yarn with a mossy green, and while the yarn is still very much that nearly black color, there's also a green tint to it that's just beautiful

    The problem for me with dark/black yarn is more like my eyesight, can't knit them unless i can do it in the sunlight.
    Dark yarns can be really awesome, like some deep pine needle green or deep dark blue of bright starry night.

    I hate it when people just repeat what they heard someone say once without trying it for themselves, or giving it a thought. Textures are visible in dark yarn, unless you are knitting some invisible cables, or transparent lace, or something like that. It won't be super visible on the pictures, but in person it's great, it's there, you can't miss it. And here I come to my conclusion after watching this video - are we knitting something because it looks good on insta or to wear it? Same thing goes for super chunky sweaters that look great on pictures, stitch definition looks perfect, but they are mostly unpractical as they are too bulky to fit under a jacket, or too warm, and so on. On the other hand, you'll reach for a black cardi more often, and show off its textures and actually wear it. Sorry I went on a tangent, great video, thank Taylor, love your work :)

    Couldn't agree more! One thing though, older eyes sometimes need a little help with light when working with dark yarn. I've solved this problem for myself by getting a usb rechargeable neck light. It's not as comfortable as I'd like, but it does help me see the stitches.

    Looking more closely at the Ingrid Slipover, I found I actually preferred the projects that were in the darker colours *because* the texture stood out less. In some colours it actually looked too busy, to me anyway.

    Your dark green sweater is beautiful.
    I sometimes like to take a “nordic” pattern and instead of using colour, I knit textures with knit and perl. Making a swatch, with the yarn you want to knit with, and with the texture of the pattern, helps you see what you can expect.
    Happy crafting 🧶🪡

    I love this video. I love some texture and every garment I knit for myself, I do with black yarn. I am a male knitter, so my viewpoint is slightly different. I would say that any Gurnsey looks pretty in a dark yarn. Also Hudson & West have some beautiful textured designs that translate well in dark yarns. I did their Saven sweater and it is my favorite. I'd also recommend the Korshavn Sweater by Tonje Hodne and the Ryo by Reiko Kuwamura.

It makes the cables look so squishy and rich and beautiful and I love it! I like wearing jewel tones, and after going thru the project pages on ravelry I was convinced that the cables in this sweater look so much moodier and rich when knit in dark colors than they do in light ones.

    This was super helpful to breakdown mentally and help choose yarns I would actually enjoy wearing once knit up…I tend to like understated clothes, but enjoy all the coziness that texture brings-love the idea of keeping my lights and brights more simple, and darks for more texture when wanting “pizazz” that’s not going to look like a fad, and simple with dark for streamlined elegance. Great tips and ways to describe things in terms of light hitting it and why I may be drawn to certain things without understanding it

There is texture in the pattern because it has eyelets all through the pattern allowing me to wear a contrasting or complimentary color underneath thereby getting some much desired color. My daughter requested a cable sweater in black. It turned out beautifully and the texture is stunning! I used the Hayfield pattern #9219, which is a classic fisherman’s cable pattern. I will say, however, that knitting cables in black is a real challenge and that I suggest knitting outdoors in the sunlight!

    Its so funny that this is such an established rule but I've never really heard of it lol. Ive knitted several darker sweaters (2 in black) and I wear them all the time. I do tend to like more cropped vintage style shapes and I love knitting lace, so ive made the Emelie cardigan in black Charlemont (which is a silk blend) and the shine from the silk gives it a nice highlight so you see the faux cables just fine. Ive also knit the Florist Bolero in black plain wool and the lace kind of gets lost, so I think a lot of it depends on the loft and sheen of the yarn, not just the color. Probably my most worn sweater ever is the Alecia Beth knit in Heritage yarn in Navy. Dark colors go with everything, so why not knit them? All stockinette is so boring. Slap some lace and texture on there and get knitting! Don't worry about other peoples "rules".

    Love the Ingrid slipover!! I love mohair!! Too bad I run hot and live in Northeast Tennessee!! I read where it says to make sure you get gauge in height and width so substituting a worsted yarn probably won't work!!

    I have been knitting the Jules Genser in charcoal grey mohai, so nearly black, and I think those kinds of lace motif sweaters are great for darker yarns, because they'll be a bit see-through, and so still visible. also, I hope to get a bit more of an edgy than completely feminine look eheh

    • @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS
      @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Jules Genser is gorgeous and if it were me, I would do just as you're doing and opt for close to black for the same reasons. It's a VERY feminine look based on the sample and I would definitely want a bit more edge to balance things out (I'm feminine, but not that feminine 😅) and the black would be a really nice, classy way to tone down the see-thorugh bits. I bet it's going to be beautiful Liliana! 🖤

    I think one big thing to consider when knitting a textured garment with a dark yarn is the structure of the yarn. A lofty or loosely spun yarn isn’t going to show the texture as neatly as a high twist merino. I learnt this the hard way after I brought yarn for the storm sweater 😅

    Thank you Tayler for this wonderfully informative video. I, also, had assumed texture in a black or very dark yarn was a waste of effort. Your comments helped me realise that, in our media / photo image biased 'view' of choosing things to purchase / make, 'we' forget what something can look like in real life. We can be mindful of the amount of editing one has to do to 'see' a photographic image as clearly as we would in real life and think / consider that the texture of a dark item can be discerned much more easily by the naked eye than it would be through a photographic image? hope this makes sense and doesn't sound 'preachy' but this has made me reconsider my knitting yarn and item choices.

      Yes! I'm so glad to read this comment because I feel like that was my intention for this video. Not to necessarily say that we should be knitting all the texture in dark yarn or that it's in some way "better", but rather that it deserves reconsideration and that's exactly what you may have been doing as you watched. I love that and I appreciate that. And what you say doesn't seem preachy at all.

    I really enjoy the content that you create. If you reach out to designers I wonder if they would clarify pronunciation of their and pattern names. As Americans we have a reputation for not caring about such details. I had a maiden name that was not typical of American culture. It hurt when most people mispronounced my name and said, “whatever.” I realize you and all of the other creators are busy and this feels like a time consuming, unimportant detail. I am not trying to represent any group, only myself.💗💗💗

      @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, yes. You're absolutely right. But in this age where everything you see is on a screen and how that image is displayed has a lot to do with digital processing and resolution, the notion that "texture gets lost in dark yarn" is nurtured by just how poorly automatic digital cameras pick up detail in dark spaces (generally). I think if we all did a gallery walk (in person) of several textured sweaters knit in dark yarns, we'd put to bed this idea for the most part. It's an interesting quandary for sure.

    I dislike that dark yarns make textures look more subtle. In my opinion, either the colour should have full attention, or the texture should. If I'm going to make something textured, I don't want subtle. If I've added texture I want the texture to be immediately obvious and yell "hey look at me". I'm very much a go big or go home person 😂
