I have a “rule of three” with my knitting: I can start project 1 for example and work it until I’m bored. Then I’ll cast on project 2. Work on that for a bit, then maybe go back to project 1 when I just need a break (from cabling, colorwork, etc.). From there, I’ll cast on project 3. My grandma taught me to always slip the first stitch of a row to get a really clean edge. Works nicely. My greatest problem with having UFOs (unfinished objects/projects) lying around is not knowing where I left off if I (as happens too often) haven't made proper notes along the way. And then they start haunting me which leads to me not wanting to touch them and then I feel like a fail. So I tend to try and push through a project, because I like finished and hurting (figuratively) better than failed, but that's just me.
I've always been told I knit funny, but I can see I knit exactly as you. Finally, proof there's nothing wrong with the way I knit.😜 I've been knitting since I was 16. I'm now 52 and I'm still addicted to knitting. By the way, I absolutely love your patterns and your personality. 😍😍🤩
Omg, this must be like a thing that just feels natural. I just started knitting. Like a week ago 😂 making my first scarf. But about day 3 I started knitting the same way she does. Kind like continental but also using the right index finger to “help” bringing the yarn haha. I was wondering if that’s okay or “correct” to knit like that. It just kinda happened for me. Although I’m still figuring out how to holds my yarn for a good tension without making it super hard for it to slide through my fingers.
@@stephaniemoura9325 same!! my mom and my grandmother can knit at lightning speed, the old English /standard way - my hands fall asleep pretty quickly that way, and I’m two weeks and now trying to learn continental - which I find more natural for me ….picking and flicking is easier for arthritis for sure!
I fully agree about not feeling guilty about having a lot of projects on the go! Often, by having a lot of projects it actually encourages me to go back and finish some old ones. Knitting should be fun, so I don't want to be stressed out because I feel like I should feel guilty! 🍍
Exactly, I totally agree and feel the same. I love to be able to try out an idea or start a new project when I get that idea and have the energy and spark, because I know there will always be days when I don’t feel so insoired so then it’s nice to have some options. Also, it’s nice to have some more ”simple” projects too that I can take with me on the road for example (knitting with 4 colors in the train isn’t always the most convenient! 😅)
Learning to recognize an increase or decrease row to count and find your place is a very helpful skill too. Recognizing all your stitches really helps. Especially when doing complicated lace or pattern repeats. Instead of having to constantly check the pattern you can tell what stitch is next by what is below.
🍍I am knitting your arctic light sweater and discovered your wonderful TH-cam tutorials. Now I'm going back and watching all your past videos too. I am in awe of your knitted wedding dress! Beautiful. You come across as such a happy and upbeat person. Your light and energy is contagious! Thank you for the work you do. ❤Amy from Washington State
🍓😉 I just found your show today (and subscribed) . I'm 79 and have been knitting for 60 years. Your presentation was lovely and really communicated your enjoyment of knitting. Your tips are right on target... especially regarding gauge swatches and making good notes. I have come to doing those things along the way in my knitting journey...especially when it's a new pattern or a different yarn...I make (and enjoy) swatching cables and new pattern details so that I can work out any questions that arise...I usually buy an extra ball of yarn for swatching and if I end up needing more yardage for my project it is my insurance. 🍍
I watched this twice. I taught myself to knit in the 80's. Holding the yarn in my left hand came naturally (im in the usa) but I never realized how much better my knitting would look if I held the needles at a constant angle. Thank for that.
Thank you for "allowing" us to have several projects going at the same time! I am one of those knitters who has to "finish" before going to a new project, and I have finally found what works for me and perhaps this will help others - Have one "difficult" or challenging piece going and have one "easy" piece going. Difficult us for times alone, and easy is watching TV or visiting with others.
🍍Loved this video! Completely agree that having lots of projects on the go at the same time is absolutely fine. Creativity is not a linear process, we don't just move from from beginning to end. Also, knitting is such a sensory experience, sometimes I feel like working with a particular colour or texture, which fits with my mood. The colour may serve to calm or enliven me, and knitting a fine yarn and complex pattern is an altogether different enterprise from the joy of a bulky yarn which produces rapid results. We are complex beings with different needs at different times, my knitting definitely reflects that!
Coming from a 20+ year knitter… This is probably the best compilation of knitting tips I’ve ever seen! They are the “true basics” of knitting and pattern design. Thank you for these videos! I’m truly enjoying them all. 🍍 😉
🍍 Dear Kika, great video, thank you very much. I learned to knit from my granny and in my adult life I wouldn´t dare to start knit project for myself! And voila, you supported me and I have couple of sweaters finished. 💖💖
🍍Hi Kika! I've been knitting for 25+ years, but I couldn't pull away from your tips video. You're so supportive, I really love it how you encourage beginner knitters there. Another tension related problem that I feel might be worth mentioning is maintaining tension. On my knitting journey, I've often gauge-swatched, gotten the right gauge and started knitting happily, only to find later that I had veered wildly off-gauge and ended up with a much bigger/smaller garment. A handy little tip here would be to measure your gauge from time to time as you're working on your project. Thank you so much again for all the inspiration, support and expertise!
So many useful tips, even for a somewhat seasoned knitter! 🍍one tip I'd give is to learn two cast-ons and two bind-offs: one firmer and one stretchier, that way even as a beginner, you can knit a larger variety of projects
I love your energy, your happiness and your joy! Thank you for sharing your great tips. Even though, as a brand new knitting woman of 70, I don’t know what you are talking about with regard to much of this yet, I loved watching and getting excited about this new challenge in life!
Thank you for the great tips, it's so recognizing to work on multiple projects at the same time. I totally agree that when inspiration comes to you it's the best to go with it, so you have fun projects in times with less inspiration🍍
I watched your video to the end, and I enjoyed it thoroughly! I've been knitting for over 50 years, but I'm still learning new things. I love your presentation. . .it's like chatting with a friend!
I love the needle angle tip! This is something I realized I do intuitively, but when I began to do Norwegian purling (which requires a little bit of “needle dancing”) it felt so odd!
I’ve been a knitter for a long time but I can always learn something new. I loved the tip about your needles angles. I keep thinking that I should change the way I knit to continental as it would be quicker. I’m thinking this now as I’m doing colour work and it’s becoming evident that I need to change how I hold my needles! Thank you for sharing these videos (and getting more people into the lovely craft of knitting!) 💕
Good job on the knitting tips. VERY long time knitter (65+ years knitting!) but I watched this video because of course you can always learn something new or be reminded of something you knew but haven't been using. For me, you inspired more use of stitch markers and I will pledge to take notes! 🍍
I really liked how you gave tips to beginner like me. How to get dropped stitch, pro tip for double collar, and emphasizing on planning. I mean that sample piece and notes for the project. I guess I'll add those! 😁🍍
Watching your videos has made me want to pick up my needles and knit again and to stick at it no matter how long it takes to knit myself a jumper! You’re very inspirational and you have a lovely way of presenting your videos. Very calming, relaxing and so informative. Thank you. Love from North Wales, UK 🍍
🍍 Loved this video. Dropped stitches are my biggest stress as a beginner. You make it look so easy. I hope you'll consider doing a video about this at some point. Simple things of knowing how to frog back and not lose count of what row you're on etc. See? Beginner here! hahaha Love your videos whether we're knitting with you or taking pictures! xx (and yes, isn't Nimble Needles wonderful?)
Aaah I totally understand the stress! And a good idea, I’ll make a note of a video like this, I’m sure many would find it useful so thank you so for the suggestion ☺️ And yes he’s such a fountain of knowledge and I’ve learned so many tips from NibleNeedles 💕🧶🙌🏼
I love your final tip that we should embrace our ideas when we have them! I think we get stuck sometimes worrying about finishing that there's no joy anymore. Which absolutely should not be the point of a hobby!!🍍🍍
🍍 Thank you for that ending. I sometimes feel guilty for casting on new bits or projects when I have unfinished work sitting around but I usually learn something for it or at least get a little joy from it even without getting a finished project at the end. Sometime I just like to dabble! Glad you confirmed I’m not alone. ❤
🍍 Very interesting and cozy video ! Thank you so much. Everything was clear. Watching these kinds of long, chatty, relaxing videos while knitting or crocheting is the absolute best ❤️✨
I also have a couple of knitting projects on the go at the same time. Thank you for all your advice, I know how to pick up dropped stitches, but today you made it clear on how to pick up a knit stich or a purl stitch, so thank you. 😊
Some great beginner tips! I share your view on having several projects at once - it gives me joy to feel the freedom of starting new projects, but also to have some I can always fall back on when the difficult projects get blocked or I'm just not getting the vibes I want 🍍
THANKS Kika for another amazing podcast. Love all your tips and find it so informative even for a seasoned knitter! Love your enthusiasm as well! Wishing you a long career as a designer and a podcaster🍁
🍍 I really enjoyed this video! Agree with everything, especially knitting a swatch. I have been guilty of not doing that in the past, but now I knit one (or more!) for every project I start. I’m not a fan of folder collars though, not sure why. I tried a couple of times and they feel a little tight around my neck. I’m not a fan of turtleneck sweaters either, so maybe it’s just that I like roomier(?) collars? Also, not sure if I commented about this before, but you were one of the inspirations behind me starting a knitting podcast (I only have one episode so far, but I’m very proud I started!).
I found your channel through this video. I have been knitting on and off for about 5 years or so, and this video is super helpful. Thank you so much for this video! There is so much amazing advice in here of things I didn't realize I needed to learn. So thank you for taking the time to make such a beautiful video, with so much information. I hope you have a great weekend. :)
Lovely video! I am a relatively new knitter . You have a delightful, engaging personality that will encourage all knitters to continue. I especially appreciate the segment showing how to pick up dropped stitches! I usually panic and rip back. Not fun. Now I can refer to the video. I am working on socks…more tricky than expected! I will go back and watch all your videos! Thanks for making them!❤ I would have used the “pineapple” emoji but couldn’t find! Greetings from Naples, Florida, U.S.A.
I'm just starting to learn to knit, i tookl 6 attempts to manage to ast on now i'm onto my third row. but your last point actually helped me not just with knitting but also with crochet, and needle felting to🍍I hope to eventually get onto the stage where I can use more of your tips.
🍍 one of my favorite tips is to have an easy project (such as a scarf that’s just stockinette) and a more involved project that requires more concentration. I knit while watching Netflix and always have to have a stockinette project to knit so I don’t have to look at it.
Hello Kika, I really liked your video thank you, it was very interesting. I like the way you explain things, it is so easy to follow. I am interested in different types of wool and suitable garments to knit with them. Best wishes Ann in South Australia.
Love your podcast 🍁🍃, was looking for a pinecone but wasn't there. So a leaf in the wind instead. Thank you for giving all the tips and tricks with knitting, never to old to learn right. Making a sweater for my husband and as always a pair off socks for the easy knitting. Happy knitting, Petra 🍍
Hi Kika. I know this is one of your old videos but I am thinking of making your Artic Sweater and your Salty Days sweater and this video had some great tips. I watched till the end. I have watched some of your newer videos as well as can see you are a new mum. You have a beautiful baby boy. I hope you are doing okay with being a new mum. It can be really hard. Accept help when people offer it and try to get some sleep when your baby is sleeping too. I am amazing you are also wanting to publish another book. I hope it goes well. Looking forward to your next videos. I am on the other side of the world in Australia and find it hard to travel so seeing where you visit and live is so amazing and beautiful. Thankyou
Thank you so much. I ❤️ your content and tips on your creative process. I listen to, more than watch, your videos as I'm usually working on a project of my own at the time, and find your enthusiasm so inspiring. Just this morning, I told my husband how much I love your cable work. I'm mostly a crocheter, but you make my heart want to do more knitting 🍍
🍍cool tips, Kika, thank you! On my next project, I'm definitely trying the "go down 2 sizes and knit through the back loop" for the ribs! And the double neck one, too! So stylish. I use the interchangeable Prym needles just like yours and they are amazing! #needlepals 😂
That's so interesting! I saw an article about your channel in Suuri Käsityö. Until now I had thought that I had the largest Finnish crafts channel but yours is a little bit bigger! 💗 I do crochet mainly, just tutorials so a very different type of channel. All the best, great to see your channel!
Another amazing video! You have such a great energy and editing style. Always fun to grab my knitting and knit along with you as you discuss your own knitting. 🍍❤🍍
I knit continental mainly but have always done most of the work with my right needle as far as the picking goes. I do realize though that I tighten my work up after every stitch to get consistent tension. It was interesting seeing you use your left hand to wrap the yarn around the needle as I'm left handed and had never even considered this before. I've learned so many different ways of knitting at this point but I'm glad to see there are more ways for me yet to learn. Getting the most comfortable and productive workflow is always the best idea. Always looking for ways to increase my speed.
For the "calculating how much yarn you need" part: I like to just buy an extra skein or maybe even 2-3 if you can't check it. (Happens a lot because I'm not from the US but often use patterns from American creators.) I like that if you buy too much you can just make a small project out of the scraps like dish towels or dolls or something like that. :) Edit: For the taking notes part I really like writing my notes on my original pattern, a lot of people hate that because I also do that in books ^^´
I just found your channel and I’m so delighted. You seem such a gentle and pure creator that truthfully shares incredible tips! Thanks for putting your content out there 🍍
🍍Thank you so much!! I'm back into knitting after a very long period of pause, going back to the basis and you're so inspiring and supportive.I definitely love all your videos even if most of your knitting projects seem to be out of reach, it makes me feel like going on and trying. Thank you for that!
🍍 thank you for the tips! I am just learning how to knit, and it's so helpful to hear advice and encouragement from people who have been doing this much longer.
🍍 Great tips. Just watched your wedding dress video and it is stunning. You are a beautiful bride and congratulations on your new baby. I can’t wait to make your stitches sweater. It’s one of my favorites.
🍍 I stopped knitting for years and just got back into it. This video was a very helpful reminder... and no I forgot to gauge swatch my two current projects. The third is nålbindning but I think it still counts!
I really enjoyed this video and appreciated some of the tips, especially the one on dropping down 2 needle sizes for the rib. I also like my rib to be firmer but I lack your skills and stick rigidly to what the pattern says. I always have several things on the go, partly because as the work on my needles gets heavier, I give my wrists a break by then working on something smaller for a bit. I avoid anything with cables like the plague because having to use that little extra needle behind or in front of your work drives me crazy! It never sits where it’s supposed to and I mess up the tension from grabbing it too tight cos I think I’m gonna lose the stitches on it!😀 but I love knitting almost anything else. Love all your videos! ❤️🍍
🍍🍍🍍 I crochet and still found many of these tips helpful! My grandmother knitted and taught me when I was young but then I picked up crochet and have done so for the last decade but I’m inspired to also re-learn knitting. Your patterns from your book are STUNNING and I’m loving your vlogs. Just found you last weekend.
❤ I enjoyed this video, and thought the last suggestion is a good one that you don’t have to finish one project before you start another and it is a form of art, I really like that. Thank you.
🍍 Thank you for the video!! I love watching your channel while I'm knitting and you've inspired me to start on my first sweater. Thanks for posting!!!!
A couple of years late to the party but thank you for this video! I’m pretty new to the knitting world but my enthusiasm for learning new things is tremendous. Thanks for helping me get better. 🍍
So happy this video popped up in my “Recommended” feed. I’ve been knitting/crocheting off and on for over 20 years and these tips, some new & some familiar, are all very helpful. Thank you! Here’s your pineapple. 😜🍍
Another fun video with great reminders. Learned from just watching you make your stitches.... calm and deliberate and not frenzied at all. Ahhhh. Thanks!🍍
Thank you so much, you are fun to watch. I am Brand new at knitting. Have tried many times and failed, lol. I’ve crocheted since childhood and knitting hasn’t felt as natural to me. Lately, I’ve had a bit more success. Your tips are helpful and I’ll try the tension and dropped stitches ones for sure. Thanks again! 🍍
🍍 Thank you for the video. And a compliment, of course you are lovely in white, but that purple sweater really makes your pretty skin come alive with a healthy glow. It is a total winner for you!
Love this video! The tips were fantastic. I really appreciated your highlighting that having multiple projects on the go is a reasonable creative process! 🍍
Great tips, thanks for making the video and sharing it. My own tip is the opposite for yours re: ribbing. I really hate tight hems, just doesn't suit my body shape, my favourite is a boxy look so I tend to use same size or find an alternative to the ribbing. On the other hand, for sleeve cuffs, I'm with you 100% 🙂
I just recently discovered you andblove to explore some of your older videos. I am still a beginner knitter and have so much to learn. Thx for the tips :) 🍍
🍍Thanks for your fun videos! I’ve been having fun watching your knitting videos while I knit lately, and your sparkly personality and great sense of style always perks up my stitches
🍍I have tried to knit many times and given up. I'm now knitting a hat and am being more independent, not relying on others to sort out my mistakes. Also, I've had to let go of perfectionism and see projects as a learning curve. This video was really inspirational as well as practical. Thank you.
I have learned so much from your videos since finding you a few months ago, and I recently ordered your book and can't wait for its arrival! I agree with you; it's good to have multiple projects going simultaneously. Different projects for different moods and levels of concentration. Thanks for sharing your knitting know-how through your uplifting and inspiring videos.
Thank you Kutavakika! I loved your video and your tips. I am very like you, so many new projects on my list and I sew, knit and garden so I am always inspired by new ideas! There is never enough time or energy in one day! I learnt so much from your tips! ❤️
🍍I love your different video's. I crochet; did knitting very long ago, but nothing fancy. You are inspiring me, to try out for something knitted; not sure..maybe socks😯🤩 I love a challenge. There will always be, other yarn &/or other projects, that catches my eye; so I think, having a few projects going; helps me, to stay motivated. Thanx for great content!
Fantastic and very useful information - thank you so much !from Toronto ….I am a beginner but my mum and grandmother are incredible knitters… your sweaters are beautiful! I only wish it wasn’t so expensive now to buy real wool and make sweaters.
Wonderful video & tips! Your sweaters are sooo beautiful and you are so prolific, you are enormously qualified to give knitting advice! I like what you say about having multiple projects going, plus your folded neck lines are beautiful.
Just finishing my first project…a simple wash cloth. So I appreciate these tips, especially how to clean up the edges, because that’s been difficult for me. Thanks! Pineapple 🍍
🍍 happy to discover I already know and apply all of your “tips”. Also, thank you for defending being a polygamous-knitter. I am 100% with you with probably 100 reasons why this works best for me including tempering the pang of sadness I can feel when I finish a project I really enjoyed knitting - similar to the bittersweet feeling when I finish a good book or series and don’t really want to say goodbye to the immersion and escape into the characters’ lives. I always have a variety of WIPs going. And they all satisfy different moods and needs and keep me progressing as a knitter and stave-off boredom, monotony, or Heaven-forbid feeling negatively towards a project. I do keep it capped at about six WIPs at a time tho. That’s my sweet spot!😊

Omg!!! The jumper you’re wearing in this video is just stubbing 😍 stunning stunning. I love it
So many useful tips, even for a somewhat seasoned knitter!
See? Beginner here! hahaha Love your videos whether we're knitting with you or taking pictures! xx
(and yes, isn't Nimble Needles wonderful?)
Found you via recommend in a nimble needles vidio .The vidio was very useful
You need a crochet hook to pick up and re knit a stitch.
I love your final tip that we should embrace our ideas when we have them! I think we get stuck sometimes worrying about finishing that there's no joy anymore. Which absolutely should not be the point of a hobby!!🍍🍍
I have just rediscovered my love for knitting, and your channel inspires me. Thank you for sharing your creativity and sparkly spirit so brightly. 🍍❤
🍍🍍🍍 I just started my first sweater ever! I'm a little bit nervous but LOVE how encouraging you are in your videos.
🍍
Very interesting and cozy video ! Thank you so much. Everything was clear.
Watching these kinds of long, chatty, relaxing videos while knitting or crocheting is the absolute best ❤️✨
Im just starting on my knitting journey and i know these tips are going to be invaluable. Thank you Kika 🍍
I’m so glad to hear that, hope these will help you 🧶🧶☺️☺️
I also have a couple of knitting projects on the go at the same time.
Thank you. I just started to knit and your tips are exactly what I needed 😀
🍍I'm so glad to know that there are other fiber artists like me that have a lot of projects going at once. Thank you for making these videos.
🍍 Just finished my first knitting project, a headband. Still deciding what to make next. Can't wait to learn and make more!
You can find the pineapple emoji by the fruits and vegetables.😊
I am just about to finish my very first sweater and might just try doubling that collar! 🍍
I'm just starting to learn to knit, i tookl 6 attempts to manage to ast on now i'm onto my third row. but your last point actually helped me not just with knitting but also with crochet, and needle felting to🍍I hope to eventually get onto the stage where I can use more of your tips.
I will try to knit again, and this time, not pressuring myself but to enjoy the process of my knitting journey. You are such an inspiration ❤️
Yay #needlepals!! I love them they’re so handy and feels really good with all the yarns I’ve tried them out with so far ☺️☺️
That's so interesting! I saw an article about your channel in Suuri Käsityö. Until now I had thought that I had the largest Finnish crafts channel but yours is a little bit bigger! 💗 I do crochet mainly, just tutorials so a very different type of channel. All the best, great to see your channel!
@Crochet and Knitting with Tuula Maaria Would you remember which nr of Suuri Käsityö that was? I'd be interested to see :)
@@elvinam888 A very recent one, February this year 😊
@@TuulaMaaria Ah, thank you! I'll see if I can find that one :)
Another amazing video! You have such a great energy and editing style. Always fun to grab my knitting and knit along with you as you discuss your own knitting. 🍍❤🍍
This makes me so glad to hear! Thank you for watching 🥰🥰
❤🧶 not a knitter YET but I love to watch your videos while I crochet. One yarn lover with another
I knit continental mainly but have always done most of the work with my right needle as far as the picking goes.
Edit: For the taking notes part I really like writing my notes on my original pattern, a lot of people hate that because I also do that in books ^^´
I just found your channel and I’m so delighted. You seem such a gentle and pure creator that truthfully shares incredible tips! Thanks for putting your content out there 🍍
Just watched your wedding dress video and fell in love with your presentation style. This video popped up and I learned a ton. Thank you
🍍Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for this - super helpful for someone who loves knitting and are always looking for new tips! 🍍
I love the way you explained these things. I'm new to knitting so I'm always looking for more views on things. 🍍
Fantastic tips, even for a seasoned knitter! Your enthusiasm is contagious and darling. Your creations are lovely!❤
🍍 Thanks a lot for all of the advice! I’m new to knitting 🧶 and will be starting my first project soon, so all the tips are welcome 🤗
On the other hand, for sleeve cuffs, I'm with you 100% 🙂
The white jumper you are wearing in this video is gorgeous!
I absolutely love this video! Thanks for all of the tips. I’ve knitted for several years, and I learned new things.
I just recently discovered you andblove to explore some of your older videos. I am still a beginner knitter and have so much to learn. Thx for the tips :) 🍍
I started learning just today, went easier than crocheting!! I'm so glad for finding your channel, as I have so much ambition for projects aaah! 🥰🍍
I really needed this and appreciate it very much. Trying out knitting from crocheting and I want my projects to look their best. 🍍🍍🍍
🍍I am a brand new knitter and love this video; I am learning so much! ❤
Thank you Kutavakika! I loved your video and your tips. I am very like you, so many new projects on my list and I sew, knit and garden so I am always inspired by new ideas! There is never enough time or energy in one day!
I learnt so much from your tips! ❤️
Thank you as a new knitter I appreciate all the help I can get
🍍
🍍I love your different video's. I crochet; did knitting very long ago, but nothing fancy. You are inspiring me, to try out for something knitted; not sure..maybe socks😯🤩 I love a challenge. There will always be, other yarn &/or other projects, that catches my eye; so I think, having a few projects going; helps me, to stay motivated. Thanx for great content!
Hii! I’m an intermediate knitter (starting a business) and this was nice to learn some little extra things! 🍍thank you❤
🍍 thank you so much!!! These tips and lessons will definitely help me when I get stuck on a project.
Fantastic and very useful information - thank you so much !from Toronto ….I am a beginner but my mum and grandmother are incredible knitters… your sweaters are beautiful! I only wish it wasn’t so expensive now to buy real wool and make sweaters.
I rewatched this, great review, I’ve been knitting 50+ years🍍🍍
Wonderful video & tips!
Thanks! Pineapple 🍍
wonderful tips! i haven't heard a number of these - thank you! I've now subscribed. ☺️🍍
Total beginner here. Thank you so much 😊🍍
🍍 happy to discover I already know and apply all of your “tips”.
🍍 I’m enjoying binge watching your videos after That’s a Sarah shared about you in her latest video. Thank you for sharing so many good tips and ideas for knitting and life. 💛
