What I love about Rhinebeck goes beyond the shopping - it’s the whole experience of a fall getaway in the Hudson Valley. The drive itself, surrounded by beautiful autumn colors, is worth the trip. And there’s so much to enjoy along the way, from visiting historic sites like FDR’s home, the Culinary Institute of America, and the Vanderbilt Mansion, to spending quality time with my wonderful daughter on our annual girls' weekend. Rhinebeck is a chance to slow down and savor the season before the holiday rush sets in. Our hotel picnic and knitting sessions are pure relaxation, and there’s something magical about seeing all the sheep and the whimsical llama parade. And of course, I love the vendors, the food vendors - the wine, the cheese, the maple vendors, and especially the 4H stand with their hot cider. The festival atmosphere is made even better by the warmth of everyone there, from folks admiring each other's beautiful knitwear to those friendly (random) chats in line. I also enjoy revisiting Rhinebeck through others' videos online, sometimes spotting my daughter and myself in the crowd and seeing it all from different perspectives. Rhinebeck is a true celebration of the season and a cherished tradition for us each fall.
Rhinebeck is also just a huge, amazing fashion show! Just walking around and seeing the sheer volume of incredible knitwear is worth it. I went with a non knitter, who just couldn’t believe the number of people that were into knitting (fibers) and pointing out everyone sweaters! 😊
@@akaNoraKnits That would be amazing! You have such a great sense of style and styling, that it would be a perfect avenue for you to branch out to on these festivals.
For those in the Midwest, Wisconsin Sheep and Wool is a nice festival. I went for the first time this year and it was lovely! Great balance of animals, activities, vendors, and did not feel too overwhelming - three day event I believe. Thanks for sharing your pov!
It is a Saturday and Sunday event with some classes available on Thursday and Friday, but you must sign up online and pay ahead, you can't just show up and attend a class.
Slightly different perspective. Rhinebeck is for shopping, yes, but there is so much more to it. Sheepdog trials, sheep shearings, meeting the breeders, seeing the different breeds of sheep and learning more about each of them, checking out the rest of the fiber producing animals, meeting up with friends I may only see once or twice a year and getting to catch up. Quite honestly, $15 to get in just for that is totally worth it. I didn't even go into half the buildings/barns that were only dedicated to shopping. I've been attending Rhinebeck almost continuously since 1998 (it's been around since the 1980s). It's changed a huge amount and grown by leaps and bounds. As you said, it is pretty overwhelming and making a decision can be difficult if FOMO sets in, but if you look beyond the shopping experience, it is totally worth attending. At least in my not incredibly humble opinion. As for Cake or the others, I would not spend the same amount of (or more) money to enter for just 2 hours when the only thing to do there is shop. Not my jam.
It was my first time ever going to Rhinebeck this year. I was there on both the Saturday and Sunday. And yes, the crowds were immense. But, I came away with such a positive feeling and my faith in humanity restored. Over the entire two days, I did not experience any pushing or squabbling. People were consistently polite and patient. Yes, we all had to navigate around one another, but we did so without any poor behavior towards one another, and there were so many, many smiles. And oh, the genuine interest in me, the happy but non-intrusive questions that I received. It was all so wonderful. Yes, I made some purchases, but that’s not why I went. I simply wanted to know what all the Rhinebeck fuss was about. The sheep! The other animals! The food! And most of all, many stunning pieces of wearable art, those Rhinebeck sweaters! For me, Rhinebeck delivered in many wonderful ways.
I appreciate your honesty regarding what feels like an overwhelming amount of repetitive products. Both my wife and I completely agree with your assessment on that. However we prefer attending on Sundays, we find it to be a more relaxed environment, probably due to fewer attendees. We also saw a few products that we had not seen offered in prior years. 😊
It was my first year attending Rhinebeck and making a physical list with pictures of the sweaters/projects and the yardage amounts was very helpful. Also I looked at the vendor list beforehand, made notes of what vendors I was most interested in and the barns they were in helped me feel less overwhelmed.
@calliecreates I did this too! I actually went to all the events and got some yarn from different vendors to make a souvenir stripe hype sweater. It was so fun and definitely helped the overwhelm
I say this often and I’ll say it again…your voice is so necessary and refreshing in a space where the content can be cookie cutter. Thank you for your POV! As a CakePalooza vendor and Rhinebeck attendee for the past 4 years, this year was wayyy more people-y! The incredible weather was a huge factor but I also think last years auxiliary event fiasco has pushed more vendors and shoppers to Indie and Cake wanting to capitalize on and experience the more Indie side of Rhinebeck weekend. As an anxious maker, I spent a lot of time regrouping and finding quiet nooks to catch my breath. I will say that the novelty of “the hill” has worn off for me. I kind of skim the outskirts and try to breeze by lol. Overall, I’m glad you had a better experience this year, your sweaters were 10/10 and meeting you IRL was the highlight of my weekend. If I weren’t a CakePalooza vendor, I don’t think Rhinebeck would be my top pick for the “it” fiber festival of the year but I do also know what I’m walking into beforehand. Thanks to you, others will have some semblance of what to expect and make good decisions lol. You have to come to Flock! Bigger scale like Rhinebeck but wayyyyy more space and places to decompress. A different vibe but in a good way IMHO. It is still an overwhelming amount of Indie dyed yarn and I just think that’s the nature of these newer events. Looking forward to my Saturday morning dose of Nora🩷
For me...Just seeing the thousands of hand knits on display at Rhinebeck makes the price of admission worth it. I paid $12. I get what you mean about being overwhelmed by so much choice...but also...the reason I go is because there is so much choice! If I go to my local yarn shop ... the choice is very limited and shopping online just isn't the same as getting to squish the yarn in person and line up the possible colors. We go to every barn and I take pics of what I am interested in and make sure to take a photo of the name of the booth too and then I review and go back for what I really want. I bring cash and when the cash is gone..I'm done shopping. I think I've been to Rhinebeck 6x over the past 7 years and I loved it every time. Some years I bought nothing...but the inspiration and fun of seeing the sheep, people in sweaters etc. is always worth it. I've been to Cake, Wool and Folk, A Woolen Affair and Indie Untangled. The best ever (IMO) was the first year of Wool and Folk. My friends and I really loved Indie Untangled this year and we all got something but we also got inspired by a sweater we saw and picked out our Rhinebeck sweater for next year. We liked Cake the year we went and miss seeing some of those vendors. We went once...took two years off and we are thinking of going again next year... thanks for your review. You made me laugh about the walking... we are 3 ladies in our 50s and the walking is similar to what we do all the time as residents of NYC.
Hi Nora, We drove 6 hours from Ontario Canada and attended all 3 venues. If I went again I would pass on both Cake and Rhinebeck and just do Indie Untangled. They definitely had a good variety of yarns and accessories. There were 4( I think) very large open air barns with plenty of room. They also had golf carts continuously transporting shoppers between buildings. I could have spent all day there. I hope you get to attend it next year, and hope to see you there.
THANK YOU for your HONEST opinion of these festivals ! I go to 2 fiber festivals here in Oregon that DONT have a fee to walk through ....I'm a budget knitter , I need that money for yarn ( or fiber ) ! I DO take pictures of the yarn I like, with the vender name in the photo ... I can go back before I leave and buy it, or shop online later !! ( be sure to get the colorway in the photo ! ) I watch ALOT of pod casters and notice a popularity thing ... even down to wordage !! I want to meet you , just so I can hear you say "Button" !! I LOVE IT !
Honestly, the more videos I watch about Rhinebeck, the less I want to go. It seems like the festival (all aspects of it) has gotten too big to be really enjoyable. Navigating crowds, lines, and vehicular traffic for an entire weekend just isn’t appealing. I’m lucky enough to have the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in my back yard, so I think I’ll stick with that. Although smaller than Rhinebeck, MDSW is still one of the best festivals out there in terms of organization, vendors, and accessibility. Location is great too 😊
Thank you so much for this perspective! As a new yarney podcaster, it was some serious FOMO seeing everyone go and talk about Rhinebeck. But also as a disabled person, I could tell by watching these in place videos that it wouldn't be very comfortable for me - too people-y and too much to look at. I appreciate you!
Congrats on your podcast!!! This is exactly why I wanted to share my less popular opinion of the whole thing. I'm really glad that you found it helpful and I hope that you can find a way to celebrate your craft in a way that works for you! 💛
Hey Nora! Thanks for a really human response to the overwhelming-ness of large crowd events! I'm totally there with you. I will try to find small events in my area,( Ocean County NJ) and skip the ones that require tickets and huge parking areas. I think the only thing I miss about in-person yarn events is being able to squeeze the yarn. You can't get that with internet buying. I take some time to figure out what I like that I can afford and that works for me!
I am SO with you on enjoying the in-person shopping experience! Maybe that's why I'm so disappointed by the way that these large festivals make me feel. I'm definitely on the lookout for other fiber festivals and certainly smaller ones! I'm glad that this sentiment resonated with you 💛
Great video recap. I have been going for 26 years now. This year and last year we attended on Sunday. Much better experience. I also had a hard time finding barn 31. That was where a lot of the venders I had marked off were. My intention this year was find some buttons and beads which I did get. Enjoy the day with my son and daughter in law , husband and 3 yr old grandson. It was a gorgeous weekend and so nice to just relax and enjoy the day. We interacted with many of the animals. So fun!
Thank you for saying that! I'm happy to hear that Sunday was better! And that I'm not alone in losing building 31 😂 I'm really glad you got everything you hoped for 💛
@@akaNoraKnits I do want to say that this year they made each barn and space wider so it was a nice change. No one was bumping into each other. Free flowing. Much better experience
I am looking forward to attending Rhinebeck next year. Your opinions are similar to many other opinions I’ve heard. It’s good for people to be knowledgeable about any activity that they want to participate in. Seeing podcasters is of no interest to me, so I’m planning on a Sunday visit. It is fun seeing you dressed as a pilgrim for Thanksgiving!
Great video! I wasn’t able to go this year and really enjoyed your videos. Do you use a Go Pro? Everything was so smooth! As a fellow vlogger I appreciate how hard it is. Nicely done.
I was there on Sunday. I had my daughter and grandson with me. The weather was so gorgeous and maybe that added to the crowds. I had a great time and I grew up about 1.5 hours south from Rheinbeck. I visited my mother for the weekend and included Rheinbeck in that! I didn’t mind spending money for the goods. Everything I bought I love ❤️ 😊
I was thinking the gorgeous weather definitely would add to crowds (& keep pl there much longer) esp compared to the soggy cold festival weekend last year.
Thank you, Nora - this video was extremely helpful. I’m a longtime knitter, but have never been to Rhinebeck. When I do go, your review will be so valuable. I loved seeing your video of the booths, layout, sense of the crowds, etc. And, your impressions and thoughts about the event were very informative. Thanks again!😊
I'm glad that you found this to be helpful!! I hope you find a way to make Rhinebeck work for you whenever you choose to go! Thank you so much for watching 💛
Thanks for your recap, I missed going this year. Everyone has their view and that is what makes it all so wonderful. Last year I went and it was amazing- I went to four festivals and stayed in a house with a group of friends. It was perfect for me- I love the yarns and choices, I love crowds and searching for my favorite podcasters. It’s all just what makes you happy. We are lucky to have choices. Oh, and I went to Flock this year- amazing too!!!!
I went for the first time this year, but I live just a few hours away near Syracuse. My husband and I stopped at Rhinebeck on the way into the city to see Sleep No More (there's an event I wholeheartedly recommend lol). It was fun enough. To me, it felt like if the NY State Fair was 1/4 the size and only fiber. It was just jam packed. Too many people to enjoyably shop or look at anything. If you have friends going, I think that sounds nice. And everybody there was great. I found a new indie dyer (shout out Fiber MacGyver!) and got a little inspiration from seeing other people's sweaters. It was overall fine, but it was *stressful*. And I know other people say you should do a bunch of homework beforehand to figure out where you want to hit, but .... that sounds hard lol I ended up seeing about 4 buildings, buying a bit of yarn, and feeling so overwhelmed we just went back to our hotel. I'll *maybe* go again, just because I live so close, but the truth is that NYS is full of fiber fests. There's one going on like right now in Queens, there's a big one in Western NY every year, and in June my area has the CNY fiber fest that's so close to my house I can bike there. Rhinebeck is way overhyped as something that every knitter - or even most knitters - would enjoy imo. We are a diverse community, so obviously some of us are gonna love it and I love that for them! But if you're stressed out by crowds or tight spaces, or if you prefer to shop slowly or quietly, proceed with caution. I live nearby and am really glad I went! I can't believe it took me this long lol, but I don't know that I'd go back. Especially not with so many other fiber festivals. 😬
It was my first time this year. I didn’t see you there, but did see my friend Arianna in your video at time 28:13! I also went Sunday and it seemed just as crowded to me even though everyone says it’s so much less crowded on Sunday. One if my friends bought unspun yarn NY sheep and wool, but I didn’t see any, I would have bought some.
A fun day trip for you from CT (I'm from CT too!) is Green Mountain Spinnery in Putney, VT. They have beautiful yarns - and I think somewhat reasonable - and they will show you the spinnery too. On the way is WEBS in Northampton. I agree about Rhinebeck being overwhelming- decided not to go this year but rather work through existing yarn. Hoping to go next year for a day trip - and just enjoy the beauty and community!
I went this year but as you mentioned, it was more for spinning things... Rhinebeck has so much breed specific fibre you can't find easily, that was my goal for going. I had a sweater quantity project in mind, but I think by the time I settled on something, they sold out of the colourway I wanted. Still, I was introduced to a bunch of mills and farms I can order fibre from online. It was fun to see everyone's sweaters, I def got inspiration for future knits!
The title Rhinebeck Rant …... Cake palooza is a lovely little festival event to dip your toes in for your first fiber event. A good selection, plenty of room for wheelchair access. Very organized.. Saturday with a late start and only 4.5 hours with no attempts to check out vendors prior to attending you get what you get.. Maybe Rhinebeck experience isn’t for you.. take care
I have been a couple of times. I printed out pictures of patterns and glued them in a notebook with yarn weights and colors I want. I also spend Saturday walking through all the buildings over and over and then Sunday I buy when I know which yarns I want. I think the most popular booth is Ms Babs. Good luck getting in there your first try. I think I went back 10 times before I could get in 😅
I lived in upstate NY for years, but wasn't a knitter then. It would be fun to go to a yarn festival, but more as a spectator, for low-budget me. The destination aspect appeals to me, combined with a longer vacation. I'm dreaming of going to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia someday and hope to combine it with their yarn festival. Picturing biking around the island, hiking and hanging out with knitters in a less intense environment seems like an ideal mix.🤗
Thanks for sharing. I have never been to Rhinbeck but plan on doing so next year. As for paying for a time slot for a 2 hour shopping experience, that will be a no. These places are crowded, the booths are crowded and I don't want to feel like I'm forced to rush thru. Basically I feel like I'd be paying for a bad experience, for me. I want to take my time and enjoy the experience
I definitely appreciated this walk-through and honest review! I am planning on going for the first time in 2025 and this absolutely helps me plan. Thank you for another awesome video!
Thanks for your in depth and honest thoughts!! :) This was my 5th time attending this year, and I have to say, Saturday had the busiest crowds I've ever seen! Definitely because of the beautiful weather. Sunday was definitely much more chill. After having done Rhinebeck for several years, I've learned that for me it's best to go both days, with doing some initial scoping and attending events on Saturday (and taking pictures of things I'd be interested in) and then going back on Sunday to choose from my initial thoughts and take a deeper look at the booths. Also to go with a strict plan/budget so I don't buy a ton of random skeins of yarn, haha! Also I definitely agree with you that this year especially was good for spinners! There were many deals to be had on fiber with gorgeous colors -- this is my first year spinning so it was nice to be able to dive into that. Definitely less good deals on yarn this year, but it was great to be able to see lots of breed specific and unique New York yarns around that you don't usually see in yarn stores!
I'm happy to hear that Sunday was more chill even with the stunning weather! It is nice to know that there is a little break in the chaos. Lucky you to have been there as a new spinner especially!! I can imagine it was fun to see all of the beautiful options that you can't typically find otherwise! I hope you continue to enjoy your trips to the festival!
@reverie-knit I agree about spinning! Im brand new and I got some gorgeous fibers to spin with and so much help from the vendors as a new spinner. To the point that one vendor swapped out what I originally purchased with 2 of a different fiber content because he wanted me to be successful as a beginner spinner. It was just amazing for spinners and there were so many spinners that came up to chat about the spinning items I was looking at to help me. Do spindle or wheel spin?
@@courtneylee3352 yes, the vendors were so kind about helping understand different fiber types! I was able to choose better fiber (Corriedale rather than Merino) for beginner spinning too :) I'm a wheel spinner! I've tried drop spindle spinning and while it was meditative, it was a little too slow for me, haha. What about you?
Great video as alwaysI! really appreciate you sharing your experience. I haven't been to any fiber festivals yet, so your thoughts are super valuable for me to have a well rounded perspective if I decide to go!
I can completely relate to everything you were saying. I’ve never been to Rhinebeck..but I did attend my first fiber festival this year and I was surprised at how overwhelmed I felt. I didn’t have any projects in mind and for me that was my problem. So many wonderful vendors and I couldn’t really tell the difference between yarn after about an hour. For my next fiber festival…a few months later, I had a checklist and that helped a lot. I would still absolutely love to plan a trip to Rhinebeck…but maybe not yearly. Great podcast!!😊
Thanks for your honest reviews. I haven’t or probably never will attend but appreciate the videos of the event and enjoy the yarn/sweaters for future ideas.
I think there was a lot of wisdom in what you said! I have a walking disability and think the terrain would be too much of a challenge for me. After seeing lots of great vlogs, i came to realize, i don't buy superwash much anymore. I like the unspun and wooly wools feeling and texture. Im thinking Reinbeck is not that place! Head to Vermont to the Woolly Thistle!😅 The other component is the shear overwhelming-ness of the crowds! It would take a while for me to seek out humans after that!😂 Can't wait to enjoy one of your regular podcasts!❤❤❤
Loved hearing your honest thoughts! Watching your podcast inspired me to jump into garment knitting and start an IG page. I’m so hoping to make it to Rhinebeck one of these years 🧶🐑
Hi Nora 👋 me again…. I really enjoyed your podcast. My feeling is… you have to see Rhinebeck once in you life !!! Your are right there is a LOT of hype. So many people..too much to see! I too would love to visit another festival.
I loved this video! I feel the same with decision fatigue at festivals. That’s how I’ve felt at flock the past two years. It’s soooo fun, but also overwhelming.
First time catching your podcast cast and truly agree with perspective with NY sheep and wool. I was warned to go on Sunday and this was my second time on a Sunday. I volunteered at Indie Untangled and loved it. 2 hours are just enough time to shop then relax in the beautiful surroundings. I though about Cake but I'm a lifer of indie now😊
Whenever I have been to festivals near me, I have typically stuck to purchasing minis that speak to me, rather than worrying about having enough money to buy the whole skein. If I find I still want the big skein a week after the event, then I try to match the yarn with a project, and save money to get the yarn in the quantity needed. Saves on space, and I don't get overwhelmed with my yarn
What fun buttons! And the little bag from Black Purl Magic is so cute! I attended Flock this year (first ever fiber festival I’ve gone to) and I relate to a lot of what you are saying. I enjoyed the experience but talk about overwhelm and decision fatigue! I plan to attend the next one but I will be better prepared for the next time I go.
I was there Saturday and your assessment is spot on. I would just add that it was SOOOO crowded I found it hard to really get to see many booths because they were so pack with people. Also, I found the pricing on most yarns cost prohibitive considering the lack of brick and mortar, employee, licensing , insurance and general business costs to the sellers. My local yarn shops basically carry much of the same products at the same price points so I really didn't understand the markups at the booths. I very much appreciate your thoughts on the need for a more organized layout with sectioned areas for specific products.
I went to Cake Palooza,, Indie Untangled and two days of Rhinebeck. The weather was glorious which I think made for the extra crowd on Saturday. I think of this weekend like childbirth - while you are going through it, you say “never again” , but the pain fades and all you remember is how in love you are with the new addition - whether it is baby or yarn. 🧶 if a person doesn’t like crowds, Sunday is the day to go. 😊
That is such a perfect way to put it 😂 I can imagine it would be fun to try and conquer the full weekend too!!! Just to be able to do it all must have been a fun challenge!
Thank you for your honesty. Everyone makes it sound like it’s so amazing. I am a spinner so I would love to buy a fleece there 😊. I think I would be so overwhelmed by the amount of people and choices also.
Look into smaller fiber festivals! I went to the Shenandoah valley fiber festival this year in Virginia and it was absolutely lovely. Not too crowded, but so much yarn and fiber! Full fleece sales as well! And I took a beginner spinning class that was lovely.
It's always a little unsettling when I hear soooo much hype around an event and then I walk away feeling like, "is it just me or...?" I figured I couldn't be the only one who felt that way. I would definitely encourage checking out other local festivals or if you're determined to give Rhinebeck a try, give it a go on the Sunday! Or even map out your plan using the online map and vendor list and go for the very beginning or end of the Saturday!!
I agree with you about the decision overwhelm at big festivals and also the feeling that hand-dyed yarn starts to lose its uniqueness when there’s so much of it to look at. What I enjoy at Rhinebeck when I’ve gone (I skipped it this year, but your footage gave me serious FOMO of the beautiful weather and foliage!) is the sheep and learning about different breeds, buying breed specific yarn/fiber (because I’m totally going to take up spinning!), and of course, the buttons and accessories in building 31 which is always the last building I find! Oh, and I love the book corner too. The first time I went to rhinebeck was actually to meet the two founders of Pom Pom magazine!
I also have been feeling like I was missing out on Rhinebeck every year for YEARS, but I also live with a touch of the ‘tism and nearly debilitating anxiety in crowded/public/loud places and become overwhelmed to the point of hyperventilation, tears, and anxiety attack. Every year I want to go desperately, and then remember why I can’t every time we make our monthly trek to Costco. No lie.
It was nice to see they vendors at cake!~ I wrote them all down and spent time looking them up! (i'll never be able to visit rhinebeck!!!) LOVED this eye witness reporting! LOVE your witchy collar also! ~ Now off to binge your content!
This was a great episode. I love how honest you are. It’s so cool and exciting that you saw the Grocery Girls and Tony! I also saw other knitting podcasters in the wild just as you were walking around, which was fun. Happy knitting 💚🧶💚
Thank you so much! I only hope that my honesty will help someone else feel seen in their own experience of the weekend 🥰 it was so fun to meet the people I did! I was shocked to see how many people I walked right past and hadn’t noticed until editing-just goes to show how overwhelming it all really was!! Thanks for watching 💛
@@akaNoraKnits, I swear Vermont Sheep and Wool would totally be your speed. I’m also aiming for New Hampshire Sheep and Wool next year, just calm and so much fun.
Thanks for your honest and balanced (pros and cons) thoughts. I attended with a friend, have been before, this is my fifth time going. Knew it would be crowded, but this year it was over the top ridiculous. Could not even get into most of the booths to browse, got swept along with the crowds through all the buildings, when trying to stop and look at things, the booths were overrun with long check out lines, was not able to enter most booths, too crowded….. could not shop at all. Not fun, I will not be returning. I am heading to my regional show next month, where I know I can browse more comfortably, not have to wait in long lines and be swept along shoulder to shoulder with folks in the aisles. Lovely sweaters, and people were for the most part polite, at Rhinebeck, just not my cup of tea for a shopping venue (my reason for going) any longer. Happy knitting! TFS!
It's called "Knitter's Prom" for a reason. I loved going when I could walk all day. This year we're only going to the New England Fiber Festival at the Big E fairgrounds.
I attended Rhinebeck for the first time last year. I went on a bus with Webs. I had done my research beforehand and knew exactly who I wanted to shop with. I had a budget, but I didn't limit myself. Once I saw who I wanted to, then I was able to just look around. Honestly, I'm glad that businesses are interspersed amongst each other. I wouldn't want to be a hand dyer who has a little business that I run out of my kitchen in the same space as Miss Babs
Thank you for your experience of Rhinebeck. I live in the Uk so not likely to attend. My take on any yarn or craft event is tooooo much to look at. Give me a little wool shop that is full of variety any day. 😊
I am so so with you!! Everyone has their thing, right?? I think in an alternate universe, I would love to be the person who doesn’t buy yarn allll year and then splurges at the festival!! But I enjoy the limited selection of a yarn shop 🥰
So much fun! Usually I go on Saturdays, but this year went on Sunday. It's still just as lively--but calmer--not so much celebrity stuff--but that's fine by me. My FOMO years are behind me. Also, this is the first year I didn't take a class, which used to be the prelaunch of the weekend for me, so it came up quickly. The weather was beautiful (October in NY can be unpredictable), and everyone was in such a great mood--the knitted goods alone is worth the price of admission--so inspiring. The cost has gone up over the years, but when you factor in the work that goes into the Sheep & Wool logistically, parking, clean bathrooms, nice grounds, and sheep dog exhibitions--not bad! I've learned to check out the vendors online before and plan if I'm on the hunt for special items, otherwise, it's all serendipity and inspiration. It's a definitely a great opportunity for handspinners (I still have my fleece from last year). I'm fortunate that I have a great LYS, so usually looking for more of the unique, non-yarn items. Thanks for your review--and I agree with everyone, the camera loves you!!
💜🧶Thanks for your honesty and not just being like "Rhinebeck is the best you MUST attend every year or you're not a real knitter!" (I exaggerate but sometimes it feels that way). I got overwhelmed trying to do yarn shop crawls in the past over the course of several weeks so I was feeling the huge potential for overstimulation just watching. I do appreciate you mentioning budgeting just for entry and food, if someone is inclined. I think I would be super... disappointed???... if I had to spend that and I got too decision fatigued to shop or if I felt like planned projects would be way out of budget. BUT... when you put on the lens of the community aspect that does help shift the focus off "mission shopping." It's good to know I don't have to keep feeling like I'm constantly missing it when I can't go, but that it's just a "nice to maybe do for the experience someday" kind of festival. I'll stick the the relatively smaller ones in Ohio if I get the urge 💜🧶
This was really helpful! The video of the trees and the weather is beautiful! Just looking at the crowds there, I know its not for me, even though its outside and gorgeous! But I'm West Coast and did FLOCK this year so that was great.
I appreciate your review Nora. I am having similar experience with my local fiber festivals, although they are much smaller in scale than the Rhinebeck is. I knit with about 60% neutrals, 40% colour, and I use a bit more commercial than hand dyed yarn. However on these type of festivals I am overwhelmed with colours and “businesses of the designs”. When I am looking for the inspiration both in colour and designs, I like to hit instagrams, you tube channels and Sandnes Garn website. I love attending my weekly knitting group and some “get aways” in the cottage etc. I love being with other knitters but this large market shopping experience is not for me. I take my time picking yarns and colours, and I like shopping in the stores or online.
Totally Agree!! My Florida knitting friends went but I didn't join them. But I have access to 5 yarn stores within 30 minutes of my home where they have to drive at least an hour to get to one!! It would not be worth the travel cost to be overwhelmed with yarn choices. I am lucky to have a local wool festival in September with no entry ticket or parking cost. All the money goes toward purchasing yarn and notions directly from the venders.
What a great recap thank you. I wonder if the layout and make up of booths is because the vendors have a choice in where they go?.Also I hear you on the overwhelm. I went from Perth to stephen and penelope and then norway and literally couldn't purchase without a long coffee break or a good lie down ... there was just so much to squish.
Really enjoyed watching this, Nora! Thanks so much for making it. I'm based in the UK and have considered going to Rhinebeck a couple of times - largely due to Instagram FOMO haha - so this was super helpful for me. I completely understand what you mean about all the hand-dyed yarn at festivals. I really appreciate it as an art form and love the idea of it, but find it quite stressful to use in practice (but that might be because I'm neurotic about colour management..!).
Wow! That must have been fantastic .But I guess I will never see that, and thank you so much for showing me on line. We had the Silver Willow Fiber Festival here in Saskatoon this year and I was so impressed. What a surprise that would be to run into you or some of the others Podcasters.
I didn’t even know what Rhinebeck was until I started watching knitTube this year. Thanks for the walk through cause I don’t think I’ll go 😂 So many beautiful things but so many people.
This was helpful to me (planning on going to my first NYW&S festival next year). I think it's easy to get FOMO &try to do all the things. After listening your experience (& others from this year & last year's), it sounds mist reasonable to go to the main festival both days. Your strategy of using day 1 as a reconnaissance day, then buying day 2 also works for bad weather (like last year). It seems it will be easier to relax, take my time & not stress abt hurrying up to fit in other events. With your two day strategy I think there's more time to slow down & really soak in the experience. I wouldn't be as crowd anxious if I knew I was coming back, so I could avoid super-crowded areas & go back later (or at least wait more patiently bc I know I have the time). Doing 2 or 3 satellite festivals sounds like trying to visit 3 amusement parks in a weekend (too much walking, crowds, waiting in line & running around trying to experience everything). Thank you for helping me not try to do it all & instead enjoy the experience!
I joined a knitting freind on a whim at Rhinebeck this year since I'm only about an hour away by car, and I feel similarly to you. I was happy I saw it, but I don't necessarily feel like I need to go again. It was a very overwhelming experience. And the traffic getting out was an absolute nightmare.
You should try the New England Fiber festival, I have been attending this festival for years. This year I decided to also attend Rhinebeck as well, I love it but it was not easy to shop at Rhinebeck but the experience was awesome! However, I made my bigger yarn purchases at NE fiber festival.
That building 31 is my favorite also! I almost missed it too but made 2 separate purchases in there! Thanks for the great video. I do have serious FOMO!
Hi Nora, thank you for your honest opinions on Rhinebeck. I definitely had FOMO but honestly I feel I don't need to go now. I'll just plan on going to the local fiber festival in November in West Springfield at the Big E. Just wondering if you will be going to that fiber festival? If so I hope to meet you! Really enjoy your videos please keep on inspiring everyone.
This was my first year. I attended Indie Untangled, Cakepalooza & NY sheep & wool. I loved Indie! It was so chill, and the venders were great but is definitely geared toward more of the hand dyed yarn markets! I did not super enjoy Cake, I think if I had wanted to see specific vendors then it would have been fine. I was at the 2pm time slot and it was super crowded and not full of the kind of product I was looking for we only used about half our time slot. I also went to both days of ny sheep and wool. I found the crowds Saturday extremely overwhelming but still had a nice time! I definitely appreciated having gone both days so I could think about things overnight and look again. We also got to see more animals and non shopping attractions Sunday! I completely agree that I wish vendors were grouped by type but I understand they want you to look at everything so they mix them up. I’d definitely go to indie & rhinebeck again I’d also love to go to a woolen affair. It was an expensive and fun adventure and also exhausting. I fell asleep early every bought and for the few days after we got home. Definitely good to go in with plans and supplies and maybe an outgoing shopping partner!
Great thoughts! I didn’t go this year but I have heard from dozens of friends how mobbed it was on Saturday. I’d like to try a Sunday next year’ curious to know if it was better on Sunday this year. I have only attended on Saturday in the past. I’m glad I went to Rhinebeck before everyone started wearing the same sweater because that was the fun part, seeing all the different styles. Thank you Nora! Also, I LOVE your Halloween spin to your opening, so cute! 🎃🎃
Thank you!! It sounds like Sunday was definitely the way to go this year! Perhaps we all need to urge NYSW to make this a two weekend event 😂 I didn't even think about that with everyone wearing the same sweater! It was really cool to see everyone's interpretation of the same sweater, but I agree that it would be even more fun to see different styles!! Thank you so much 🥰🎃
Great video! I attended Cakepalooza for the first time this year. We went to the first slot and it was not too crowded. We had a good time and I emerged with a mug from GoldenEarthDesigns. Interestingly, you picked up the exact same button design that I got last year! Great taste! I also went to Rhinebeck early Saturday morning but we knew that we would only be there for a couple of hours. We made our way out just before noon. It was fun, but we decided to do something different next year, as we have been going to the Friday events and NY Sheep and Wool Festival for years. There truly wasn’t much new to see and I have the same feeling of overwhelm that you described. The one bright spot which has kept me coming back is seeing yarn friends in their gorgeous makes! 🌞
I can honestly say that Saturday wasn't fun, especially as someone who's disabled and uses a mobility aide to get around. I've been many times and this was the first year I felt like it was just too busy. Sunday was so much better- less people, easier to see the displays, booths etc.
I am so sorry that that was your experience. I can only imagine how tough that must have been for you! I’m really glad that you were able to go back and enjoy yourself on Sunday and I appreciate you sharing this for anyone else it may help in the future!!
I love hearing your recap. I admire your sweet and small purchases. I only really wanted to go this year so I could possibly meet you. So glad your fans came out of the woodwork. Looked like a different experience than last year. Ive been 4 times. 2 times s with a friend, 2 times alone. I liked being alone there because i could move about freely. Are you ever really alone with 40,000 people??.
I just found you and I so enjoyed this! And you used the work BUDGET, yay! Keep it up. If there's one thing we need a reminder of when it comes to events like this, it's that. : )
It would overwhelm me so so much, so so many options. I even get overwhelmed in usual small yarn shops 😂 I'll attend my first local small yarn festival end of november and I can only think of two scenarios either I don't buy anything at all or I ignore my budget and go nuts 🙈
Hi! It was so exciting to meet you in person. I absolutely love your energy and kindness. I was the one with the stroller, food in hand and baby strapped to my chest 😅 I agree that Saturday was extremely crowded, especially with a stroller. It was impossible getting to some areas. I went back on Sunday and the vibe was so much more relaxed, and I was able to get into more booths. I mostly went early Saturday because the other years I attended I never got a souvenir bag. I was able to get one this time but not sure the crowd was worth it. Anyway, super glad I met you and I look forward to continue watching your videos 😊
Aww it was so nice to meet you!! You were totally super-momming and should be so proud of yourself for conquering the day!!! I’m glad you were able to go back and enjoy on Sunday!!! I’m glad you got your souvenir bag too!! 💛
What is wild to know is for other events at Dutchess County Fairgrounds they usually have 30,000 people for Saturday & Sunday; however, for the NYS&W festival, there were 30,000 people on Saturday alone.
We went to Cake and Indie Untangled on Friday this year. It was our first time at Cake and 2nd time at Indie. I love the parking specifically for the event and organization of Indie. They have golf carts to give you rides between the vendors pavilions if you’re needing help with getting between the pavilions. It’s timed but there are food vendors, lots of places to relax if you arrive early or are done shopping . It’s well spread out so it never feels overwhelming. I get overwhelmed easily with crowds so I love the fact Indie is so well organized and spread out. While we liked Cake, we will go to Indie again next year. It’s really fabulous and well done. NYSW (Rhinebeck)was INSANE on Saturday. Sunday was so much better! I ended up just going to the breed talks and hanging outside after getting the three specific things I came for on Saturday. Sunday is when I did looking. I figured if things were sold out ( like show colorways), it wasn’t meant for me to have it. Make a list for specific vendors before Rhinebeck before you get there, go there first on Saturday. Some vendors sell out quickly on Saturday of specific things. I pack lunch and drinks instead of buying food.
I felt this way about WI Sheep and Wool this year. It’s always fun, but for some reason this year I couldn’t focus, all the people. I’ve been to Stitches 5 or 6 times and the crowds there never bothered me. But I realized I might better enjoy just shopping at an LYS with no entry fee. 😃 Of course the LYS doesn’t have two day old baby sheep. 😃
This was my first time going to Rhinebeck for a full weekend and I went with one of my knitting friends and it was lovely! Last year I did a bust trip up from a LYS in PA and that was also a good experience! I will say Saturday and Sunday were really crowded in my opinion, I didn’t think there was a difference in the crowd 😬 but the weather was really nice both days so that probably didn’t help 😅 my friend and I also went to all three events on Friday and we liked Cake and Woolen the most just vendor wise but I totally agree with the space at Cake feeling a little cramped. We also met a new knitting friend who we picked up for Woolen and that was awesome and got to give her a bit of an American experience and we hung out with her on Saturday too! Added a cherry on top to the whole weekend to make another fiber friend 🥰
OMG I love that you combined the community and shopping experience!! It sounds like you all made the most of the weekend and that has to feel so so good!! I'm eager to check out the other Friday festivals too! Thanks for sharing your experience! 💛
I went for the first time on Sunday . I would go again. It was helpful to get my hands on yarn that I usually have to buy online . I was hard getting around ! And I’m not a big fan of crowds .
I've gone for several years but this year I had a specific goal in mind. In one way this made it easier to move quickly through or past many booths. On the other hand, my FOMO had me going back searching for things I might have missed the first time. Exhausting!!! I purchased 2 sweater quantities of Christmas sweater yarn from one new-to-me vendor (Treehouse Knits) at Indie Untangled on Friday and one favorite vendor (Cozy Color Works) at Rhinebeck . Of course I always get trapped in Miss Babs booth (always the busiest booth in my opinion). I hate crowds but for pretty yarn and podcaster sightings.....I will endure, lol.
It was my first time. It was absolutely overwhelming. My local LYS arranged the trip and we got there by motorcoach bus. The crowds were insane. Vendor spaces were tiny and cramped, and were 5 people deep making it incredibly difficult to see merchandise. There was no “flow” to the foot traffic, so many people would just stop abruptly in the middle of a space, and you’d literally smack into them. Some people were towing large wagons with them, making maneuvering that much more difficult. Everything was overpriced. The yellow jacket bees were out by the THOUSANDS. It was just overall a very disappointing experience. Part of the problem was the use of the old animal barns for vendor “stalls”. Yes, this is charming in theory, but not practical in execution. The festival needs more independent tents, more places to sit, and more port-a-potties.
I shop a lot like you. I go with my shopping list, a list of vendors and where they are located, and a map of the festival on a cheat sheet. I can write any notes on that paper, and I also take pictures of specific things that I may want to come back to + the booth banner so I know where to go. I find I generally purchase fiber and tools at the festivals and not a lot of yarn. I dislike being crowded when shopping and some of the yarn booths are so tiny! I do think I like Maryland Sheep and Wool better, but I think that is primarily because I get to go home and sleep in my own bed at the end of the day and not the vendors or layout.
This is my first time watching your podcast and I enjoyed it very much. I really appreciate how you frankly spoke about your Rhinebeck experience. I have attended twice and I have attended many other festivals. I did not go this year. It is overwhelming, but a lot of the, indie dyers you will see again and again at other festivals, so it becomes a bit redundant. I think that this festival has turned into a meet and greet with the well known podcasters, Dyers, and fiber artists. I call them the knitting paparazzi or knitterati. I do prefer a scaled back version. The Maryland sheep and Wool festival in the Howard County Fairgrounds is a smaller version of this style of festival. My favorite is still Vogue Knitting Live in NYC as I lived in NYC for 18 years and still have my best friend there. It is a very different style with a lot of classes from well-known instructors and it has that New York fashion week type of vibe. That can be a little overwhelming for small town knitters and crocheters. But I love it and often I don’t even purchase anything, I attend the classes and meet up with my BFF and we have a fun weekend.
If it wasn't clear, I am happy to have discovered/see in-person so many of the vendors from Cake!
I will be happy to support them from afar for now 😊

That is such a fun part of it! I could definitely see going with strictly fashion intentions in the future!
That's great to know!! Thank you for sharing!!
Agree. Wisconsin was great. This was my first year going too.
We're collecting sheep and wool festivals to go to for the fun of seeing the country in a different way! That sounds like fun!
shhhh!!! dont tell the interwebs.
A planner!! That's totally the way to do it!! I'll definitely give that a try for my next fiber festival!!
@@akaNoraKnitsyes! My overplanning was perfect for this type of event. I did spot you at the festival but wasn’t able to make it over to say hi!
Shala! I won one of your bags (from Nora’s giveaway earlier this year) and it is my most favorite bag. So well-made and pretty. You do great work!
@@alecsgirlthank you so much. That makes my heart so full🩷
EXACTLY
Hi Nora, We drove 6 hours from Ontario Canada and attended all 3 venues. If I went again I would pass on both Cake and Rhinebeck and just do Indie Untangled. They definitely had a good variety of yarns and accessories. There were 4( I think) very large open air barns with plenty of room. They also had golf carts continuously transporting shoppers between buildings. I could have spent all day there. I hope you get to attend it next year, and hope to see you there.
I’m pretty certain I’d be completely overwhelmed by the Rhinebeck experience. Thank you for your honest review.
Oh my gosh I know Cindy from Montana!! How funny!
I have heard that the Maryland sheep and wool is great! And not as crowded
@@courtneylee3352 Thanks! That one is definitely on my list to look into.
Thanks for doing this video - just to see all the amazing knits people are wearing is wonderful! 🙌😍
And I know other people say you should do a bunch of homework beforehand to figure out where you want to hit, but .... that sounds hard lol
I ended up seeing about 4 buildings, buying a bit of yarn, and feeling so overwhelmed we just went back to our hotel.
So worth it for the beauty and community!! I will definitely have to check out Green Mountain Spinnery!! Thank you for the suggestion 🥰
🙂
I so feel you!! I dream of going to Barcelona Knits one day 🤩 you're talking me into Nova Scotia too!!!
I was able to choose better fiber (Corriedale rather than Merino) for beginner spinning too :)
I'm a wheel spinner! I've tried drop spindle spinning and while it was meditative, it was a little too slow for me, haha. What about you?
I always love your videos of trips and your honest opinions Nora.
The weather looked lovely this year
Great video as alwaysI! really appreciate you sharing your experience.
That’s exactly it!! I’m glad that I’m not alone in this sentiment. A checklist is absolutely a great idea!! Thank you so much 🥰
this helped my fomo so much as a west coast knitter
Oh my gosh Nora!! I love how you styled your Beatrix cardi!! It truly is a stunning knit, wow! 😭🩷
Thank you!! 🥰
I’m so hoping to make it to Rhinebeck one of these years 🧶🐑
Thank you!!! I love to hear that and I'm so excited that you've found the joy in knitting!! 💛
You’re so photogenic & I appreciate your honesty.
First time catching your podcast cast and truly agree with perspective with NY sheep and wool. I was warned to go on Sunday and this was my second time on a Sunday. I volunteered at Indie Untangled and loved it. 2 hours are just enough time to shop then relax in the beautiful surroundings. I though about Cake but I'm a lifer of indie now😊
Thanks for sharing your recap of Rhinebeck! I love the buttons you chose, they will be perfect for a future project!
Thank you!!!
Such a refreshing perspective! Having personally attended Rhinebeck 3 times, I agree with your every word.
Thank you! What a great podcast! I actually bought a vida puffer bag because of this video!
Thank you for bringing us along your journey.❤
So sane -- warm, helpful, entertaining, and just... sane. What a beautiful relief in an uncertain, chaotic and hyped-up world.
No lie.
I think you were born to pose for pictures. You are so photogenic and beautiful, absolutely glowing.
But I could definitely do without all the hands flapping about. So distracting.
I agree!
Thank you for this enjoyable tour!
I cant stop staring at all these cute sweaters people wear in your footages 🤩
Hello, it was so nice to see it with your eyes! I don't have such kinde of markets in my country or neighbor countries. I loved it:)
After seeing people post about how crowded the Saturday was, I've been waiting for your video for your pov. ☕
I appreciate that! I hope my honesty will be helpful to those who need it 💛
@@akaNoraKnits The online knitting community needs honesty, there can be a wee bit too much hot air at times
Thank you so much 🥰🎃
@@akaNoraKnits your outfits both days were so good!!!! 😊
I have a tough time getting around on flat ground! Can only imagine how it must have been for you! Yay for your fortitude!!🎉
❤❤❤ I looooove your channel! Do I went to rhineback?! No, I live in Ireland, will I watch the Nora pov?! Absolutely
😂 thank you!!! Thank you so much for watching!!!
I love hearing your recap. I admire your sweet and small purchases. I only really wanted to go this year so I could possibly meet you. So glad your fans came out of the woodwork. Looked like a different experience than last year. Ive been 4 times. 2 times
s with a friend, 2 times alone. I liked being alone there because i could move about freely. Are you ever really alone with 40,000 people??.
I just found you and I so enjoyed this! And you used the work BUDGET, yay! Keep it up. If there's one thing we need a reminder of when it comes to events like this, it's that. : )
Budget is a huge part of my channel ☺️ so happy to have you!!
I was the one with the stroller, food in hand and baby strapped to my chest 😅
I agree that Saturday was extremely crowded, especially with a stroller.
What a great review of the weekend! That's so so helpful to know for the future! Thank you!
I think Sunday is definitely a totally different experience!! I'm really happy that you were successful!
