Lore should compliment a story. Be the little dish on the side. Not the main dish. An author or creator should never get too bogged down in it.
It's months later and I just realized something:
Another reason why the "6th Ranger Syndrome" argument doesn't make any sense as an explanation for why Starlight is still a contentious character is the fact that the 6th rangers are often the fan favorite in their respective Power Rangers series. Eric from Time Force, Cam from Ninja Storm, Commander Cruger from SPD, and Trent from Dino Thunder were all 6th rangers, and all of them were fan favorites
The very first sixth ranger (Tommy Oliver) was such a fan favorite that he became the leader of the team, remained leader for 2 more iterations, then became the mentor of a new team almost a decade later. Instead of explaining the mentality of the people that don't like Starlight, that whole "6th Ranger Syndrome" argument only explains the mentality of the people that DO like her, as well as the writers' insistence on shoehorning her into episodes where she doesn't fit.
let's be real, Lily. Lore is important for fanworks. Everyone is always crying for it so they can claim the title of "my fanfiction is more canon than yours". I know I'm kneecapping myself with this comment but someone has to say it.
I love me some good lore but it absolutely isn’t the most important thing
I'd say the hyperfixation on lore would extend back even farther than comic books and could be traced straight to the Silmarillion, or rather Tolkien in general. The Silmarillion was basically just a giant lore dump on a world already given agency by the books prior to it and because that information was easy to ingest, it was acclaimed for being a masterpiece despite just being backstory rather than actual story. Nerds mistook the lore of Tolkien's work to be the most important thing rather than what was actually what made his work so timeless; the theme of love and kinship prevailing in the face of evil and war (gee why does that sound familiar?)
Comic Book continuity predates Tolkien
Your example of the Legend of Zelda being a dungeon crawl first and narrative second got me thinking about how Dungeons and Dragons taught me a lot about writing. I tried to create an overarching narrative, but everyone had way more fun when I focused on the characters first and only created and shared backstory as it became relevant. In a similar vein, the original Star Wars begins with a couple paragraphs that provide only the bare minimum context for what's about to happen, and despite its flaws it feels more alive than a story that drowns the audience in lore. Audiences don't actually want the lore, because then the main story becomes yet another footnote in a history book.
I like to think of lore like candy. It's nice once in a while as a small indulgence, but you can't eat it all day every day. People will of course still get addicted to it and try to, to their own detriment.
I like fandom world building and theorizing, it's fun but I've learned to be careful when it comes to ongoing series because there's a real issue with people getting needlessly upset when it turns out they're wrong despite these being the one who demanded on explanation in the first place. it's ok for a series to leave blanks in it's world it a nice place for the fandom to play why does every little detail have to explained.
the amount of Deep Lore and the focus towards drama-based storytelling in a lot of recent cartoons makes me kinda sad. especially when i thought they were better BEFORE they got all "deep". humor and personality alone can be smart and fun and can absolutely carry a show.
I consider myself to be easily pleased by a lot of things, but even I didn't understand what made the season 7 finale so beloved by people. Snappy redemption and a quick battle of magical tug-of-war... like... what?

This is exactly why I loved this year’s Christmas special (save for the still creepy Sparity relationship) because it didn’t have a shitty, convoluted message that focused on things that aren’t applicable to actual humans. There were no egregiously toxic moments of forgiveness, or Starlight being the unjust voice of reason that makes everyone else look stupid. No big baddie to take down and later redeem. Events flowed naturally for the most part and each event served to the greater theme of the episode. There wasn’t so much world building beyond what was already established, and the world building that did occur served a purpose in the message. Also Shining Armor and Cadence were fucking adorable even though they were on for like two minutes. If Mike Vogel writes more episodes like this, the show can return to its far better monster-of-the-week formula.

A yees, thy freaking lore (sips thy coffee) WHY?!? I have my own headcanons I like lore, but why??? I agree that lore is not the important part but I am utterly confused why people want their headcanons and theories to be real in the show so badly.
Recently my cousin and I watched legend of everfree again with a friend of his. His friend got pissy and when we asked why it was because they "forgot" that Sunset is an Alicorn and Scitwi isnt. When I asked him how he got that idea he said because of the brony notion and ALL THE LORE ON HOW TO BECOME AN ALICORN OF COURSE, after hearing him rant out the evidence both me and my cousin said Fuck you and left.
Man...I really miss Season 1. I believe the series would have been so much more fulfilling and entertaining if the show would have followed the ideas and concepts of Seasons 1 & 2. Honestly the last two season have been such a boring broken record of uninteresting characters and ham stringed plots that I don't even watch the show anymore, merely perusing the few still worthwhile content creators from time to time.
Don't worry Lily people are learning, look at me for example I loved starlight and found alot of songs like for everfree and the magic inside we're good, but as I watched your videos I did learn more how to tell good songs apart from bad songs and good characters from bad ones
