I continue to be more and more pleased by how concise, logical, and articulate these videos are. Brava.
Fantastic video. It frustrates me beyond belief when people try to tell me I should be more accepting of opinions that aren't my own when 1) they involve matters that affect my life, and 2) the other person holds an opinion that affects my life in a negative way. I lost a "friendship" with a couple of religious people my age - late teens to early twenties - who claimed that they wouldn't "... support sinful acts like what homosexuals perform in bed, or what transgenders (sic) perform on their bodies, but would help [LGBT people] in a fight," as if protecting me from direct physical harm while disrupting my access to HRT, SRS, bathrooms, etc is a flawless moral stance to have. So thank you for placing my frustrations into words that I can now share.
"Both sides are at fault" Is referred to in the debate hemisphere as the "Middle ground fallacy". the idea that people need to compromise even when one side is objectively wrong is a blatant logical fallacy.
I agree with this 100%. As a person who enjoys debating about politics, I always get angry when people ask, "Why do you always talk about politics? They don't affect you as a child." THEY DO MATTER. Politics determine pretty much every aspect of people's lives, and they can affect children's lives too. Almost every time I see comments on Instagram (not the best place to characterize an entire political party, because the noisy internet trolls are the ones I see the most), the person just tells me some random statement that they just pulled out of nowhere to counter what I say. I liked Hillary because her policies looked as if they would benefit not just my family, but all, if not most, Americans. Not to mention, she's good at controlling herself and she doesn't have to rely on other people to defend her for everything she says. Donald Trump says completely stupid and false things, and I know for a fact that he's got to go. He's a danger to this country! I tend to agree to disagree often, but this video actually changed my mind a bit. There are some cases where I agree to disagree, such as crowd size (it's completely irrelevant). I even feel that way with abortion. But after the fallout example, I thought about it some more and I realized that abortion will matter for a lot of women. We can't just walk away and pretend that we can just let people think what they want. Trump is dangerous because his influence is negative. He proposed that we ban Muslims because they could be terrorists, he encouraged his supporters to commit hate crimes against Muslims! His influence is hurting others, and they don't feel safe. He needs to go.
You're my hero
This is what I love about your videos, Lily. I can laugh and have a good time with in a minute, and then have philosophy and pure thought rammed down my throat with glass of water. It's a perfect yin yang, and I for one can't get enough.
That ending joke was excellent. 11/10.
I never heard of the horse show theory till now, and to me like you said, it makes no sense
Lily I didn't know you were native American
Cool
did you every study philosophy, I'm always learning something from your videos thanks Lily
Can we all agree that "if you get into an argument with Lily Peet, you will lose," is a natural law of the universe?
No, because if I ever get into an argument with someone like Lindsay Ellis, I'm going to get completely schooled.
....y'know, I haven't watched your videos in over a year because you got buried under my other subscriptions... but I just watched this one and I'm glad I did. I'm still in high school, so I don't think about politics much because I always feel tired and I'm usually not up to it. But now that I think about it, I don't even regularly think about my own beliefs. I need to, but I don't. Which is why I'm glad I watched this video - it reminded me that no matter how tired I am of life in general, it's still important to think about this stuff.
Alright lily I applaud you for that final joke the full video was anger and seriousness and then you throw that just for sillys and I love also one more thing I don't know if you have done this already but have you considered doing a video or maybe mention in a video about the general topic about the hate that war veterans get because they "are only in it for the thrill" or "they have no reason to be the way they are" you know ignorant shit like that, that as a fellow Canadian I have seen all too often
Lily, you are one of the few people I can listen to about politics without wanting to smash my head into a wall. Given, smashing my head into a wall is basically the same as arguing politics with some people, but that's beside the point. Serious question though, do you have any good tips on how to best try and get through to the conservatives during arguments when all they do is spew buzzwords, morality, religion, and senseless sound-good phrases in response to real points? It's frustrating and I was wondering if you had any ideas.
Don't waste your time having debates with conservatives
I just finished a paper about how it's a woman's right to have abortion and this video makes me feel better because I wish I could have written in more about how people are stupid
Nothing says inaction by making a shit excuse of somehow opposing oppression and hatred in an extreme matter is just "being just as bad as them." Also good Fallout stuff, New Vegas is best :P
I am curious what your thoughts are on your own viewers that agree with you no matter what your actually saying?
I believe I can figure out your opinion from your opinions you've expressed in the past but I'd rather not be the kind of person making radical assumtions about other people opinions.
Those viewers are the reason I filter comments. It's almost always blatantly obvious when a commentor wasn't paying attention to the video.
See this is something I like about you Lily. I feel like I could have a civilized conversation with you about politics. Even if we disagreed on something we would still sit there and listen to the other. I consider myself to be more or less in the middle. I don’t like the majority of the Republican Party but I also don’t like a good bit of the Democratic Party either. I’m in this weird middle ground that idk what to do about.
I don't think we actually could have a civilized conversation because part of being civilized is taking a stand on something and I have nothing but contempts for fence sitters
