  • In this video we'll go through the process of custom mounting an LED 3rd brake light to any classic car, but specifically the Datsun 280z!
    Join me in the garage as I custom mount an LED light bar into the top of the cabin of my Datsun 280z. This Tutorial can apply to just about any classic car of this era, but today we'll be working on my Datsun 280z. A wide variety of LED lights and light bars can be found on Amazon to suit your style and need. I got my LED lights from a friend on instagram so I'm sorry I don't have an amazon link for this exact setup.
    I purchased a 1"x1" aluminum channel from my local hardware store for the custom installation. Following this I used a series of specialty tools to get this done, this includes wire strippers and cutters, wire crimpers, a soldering iron, and a little patience.
    All that's needed is to have your light mounted how you want, then run the ground wire to a ground found behind the speaker box, then after that you run the Positive wire to the brake pedal sensor. You want to wire this directly to the brake pedal sensor because it will need to send a dedicated signal when pedal is depressed, but not when the running lights are on. If you wired this up to the running lights then it would be fully illuminated when you have the headlights on. You may want that, but that's not what I wanted for this install .
    After that, put your car back together and you're good!

    The fun of old Datsuns when you wanna wire something it’s the equivalent of being a color blind electrician

      I’m going to need to be fully blind if I wanna redo this entire harness 😂

    Wow that looks awesome. Been thinking about doing it to my 300zx, but worried about the red light glaring back into the boot, especially at night. Any suggestions?

      Because I know you said you made the bracket to prevent light from shining inside the car, but it still looks like it does that in the rear

      Yeah it definitely still gets in the cabin, If you wanted to prevent that you’d need to make a bigger angle iron (aluminum) and have it nearly touch the glass, or mount it flush with the rear glass. To be honest I kinda like it that it lights up the rear, mainly because I want people to see me, don’t want to be rear ended!

      @JordanPayneLV I been rear ended twice on my 280's. You want to be seen.

    Do you think some 3m tape would hold the metal on to save drilling the holes?

    • @JordanPayneLV
      @JordanPayneLV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With our heat here in vegas I don’t think the tape would last long but you can try!

      Hey I was thinking about your comment and you could probably use strong magnets if you made the bracket out of steel instead of aluminum

    Could you not run the power wire just to a rear brake light wire?

    • @JordanPayneLV
      @JordanPayneLV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I thought about that but couldn’t find a reliable diagram online so I figured I would go right to the source. Maybe if I redo the harness I would do it that way. Also the rear lights are dual element. So I’m not exactly sure how that works with wiring up a single stage led strip

      @JordanPayneLV the power wire going to the brake light bulb. You can tap in anywhere from there to the brake pedal
