I agree, but I don't think it's really a classic car at this point. It has grown into something new and different.
Having been in a 240Z, half of the experience (and joy, in my opinion) is the car vibrating lumpily at idle, the overwhelming stench of half-burnt petrol fumes, and arriving at your destination with a mild ringing in your ears.
I love the idea of evolving these cars with new technology, but it's just not quite the same.

    • @bunkaaa8726

Thats fine, you're allowed to not care, but I absolutely care, removing the noise of a 'fun' car is removing 50% of the enjoyment I get from it. I just don't see the point.
An EV van, daily commuter, grocery getter, kid hauler, fine but an EV classic sports car will 100% get boring quickly.

Great opening shot, however to tear the heart and soul out of such an iconic car as the 240Z is simply unforgivable. What is a classic car if not the sum of its parts. The parts that endeared the car to us in the first place. I think it's sad that someone who wasn't here in 1973 couid do this to such a classic. 😢

The thing is, as time goes on, the number of people willing to continually put in the time and money required to keep a classic car running, in it's original guise, becomes less and less. So whilst many of us might find putting an electric drivetrain in something like this a little disappointing, it's probably the only way this car will survive another 50 years... I'm still not completely sold on the idea of ev conversions, but I think I'm slowly coming round... Great video again Jonny 👍🏼

EV restorations are neat and usually really tasteful.
Feels like the self elected cars are those with subpar drivetrains; DeLorean? Murena? Rover Sterling?
Cars should express something of the driver when there’s this level of passion and commitment involved. I’m not a big EV fan but can seriously appreciate the engineering and sense behind this. That Bentley for example, the coach building is what sets that out and not the drivetrain. Seeing that sneak through London will be great!

An early 2000's BMW Z8 would be a VERY tempting project...
...so could you cover the legal stuff one day? Airbags, seatbelts, crumple zones, MOT, indicators & lights etc? Power packs, brakes, suspension, paintwork & interiors are all cool, but how DO you make a huge conversion street legal and is it as expensive as it sounds?

Yeah, I don’t mind that it’s an ev, but first thought was the ‘blue’ light doesn’t suit it.

Wonderful craftsmanship and one of my all time favourite cars. Thanks for sharing. My ultimate electromod would have to be a Lamborghini Espada.
Acres of room for motors and battery packs in a timeless shape.

Now EV's like this I do like. Mainstream mass production EV's don't really excite me. (All too modern & digital) I love this as he's done a brilliant job moulding modern tech with classic looks and surroundings. The car looks superb!
Just the cost is prohibitive for the likes of me. But lovely work.

Wow! That is awesome. I’ve been considering for some time about the possibility of converting my ‘73 BGT.

Oh be still my heart! A big thanks for this episode, Jonny. My first car as a young man was an orange 1972 240Z. I was *so* disappointed with Nissan when they debuted the new Z. Why not electric? Good to see Silent Classics running with it. I'm happy driving my Tesla Model S, but it would be *so* much fun to also have a 240Z EV in the driveway...

    Excellent video Johnny.
It’s brilliant these businesses converting classics are emerging because as cars go EV demand for petrol will decrease and fuel stations will gradually disappear. Also over time the skills associated with repairing combustion engines will become rarer making it difficult to keep a combustion classic on the road. So converting to EV means we’ll keep classic cars on the road. They’ll be more reliable than when they were combustion powered.
If classic EV conversion wasn’t happening in a couple of decades combustion classics will end up as static museum pieces. A few might be seen on the road driven by wealthy collectors who can afford expensive fuel and are able to store that fuel safely. EV conversions are the way to keep classics on the road beyond the ending of fossil fuel.
My choice of conversion would be a 1980s Porsche 911. Or a 924, an underrated design classic. I’d choose the 924 over the 944. I’ve owned examples of both in the past. With EV power a 924 will be faster than an ICE 944 and the 924 is the start of the front engine family with the purity of the 1970s design.

We had one from new on a K plate and I loved that car. The only thing I'd ask for on this one is the spoiler, other than that I love it.
