It's been 3 years and there's only a handful of "next gen" games. Most games launched are still cross gen so basically built with the PS4 spec as a starting foundation. So I kind of understand why people keep saying next gen. We just barely have any PS5 only games. The PS5 Pro is about to drop too so I hope, developers starts dropping the PS4. It just goes to show how successful the PS4 was/is.
I think this "next gen" refers to Overwatch itself, which from its perspective this game is next gen, as Overwatch 2 stuck on last gen (technologically).
There has to be a legal loophole on this so they earn money despite losses. I never saw an industry(which includes movies) that loses so much money and keeps going doing the same thing. This needs to be investigated.
Ya I saw that lol, when I looked at the overlay I wondered why all the cpu cores were chilling at 0%... and then one core will hit 70~ for a sec then bounce to another at 30-40. It's ridiculous that even at 4k a 4090 is like cmon I need some work
I saw the Steam numbers at like 300 players. People were calling it the new OW killer when they first showed it. OW averages 10X that just on Steam even though most of its PC players are on Bnet.
UE 5.3 and prior. UE 5.4 shipped with multi-threading on a lot of subsystems. Also, the game is happening mainly on the server and, tbh, it isn't doing anything that intensive.
Yeah and I feel like they're being too kind to it. A competitive shooter barely getting past 60-70 FPS on a top of the line system is completely unnacceptable. They crucified Elden Ring for having minor stutters, and that's a slower paced single player game, but are giving a pass to this abominable performance on a competitive shooter. Rare DF L.

Performance is one of the most important aspects for a comp fps game, hero shooter or straight fps. And having massive CPU limitation will mean low end which most fps players use will struggle massively to hit the 144/240/360+fps targets these sorts of players aim for. I feel not only has this game struggled to find a audience, those who try it out will cry poor optimization and drive others away.
For some reason this game is heavily single threaded. Maybe their version of UE5 is that outdated that didn't feature some of the threading fixes as of late.
The performance is just terrible. It is the only competitive FPS on console that straight doesn't support 120Hz. Comparing it to Overwatch to call it a "next-gen" version is nonsense when Overwatch did aim for simplistic graphics precisely to be playable at good performance by virtually anybody. Overwatch even released on Switch, whereas this one can't be maxed out on a 4090 without dropping under 90FPS all the time. Since Eurogamer/DF has marketing agreements with PlayStation, the takes on their games and multiplatforms have been being pretty deceiving.

Saying frame generation is "important for a game like this" an overwatch type multiplayer game given the amount of added latency is definitely a statement. Although I understand the "like this" part was referencing the fact that it is sadly another UE game that doesn't have great CPU utilization

While you can play for Free Apex, Destiny PvP, Overwatch, Paladins or upcoming Marvels Rivals. All for free no reason to buy for 40$ a hero shooter which will have the same 20$ Skins and no identity at all.

Sony under Jim Ryan dismantled all the classic studios that made original, innovative games so they could concentrate on making "safe bet" "profitable" mainstream generic games like "this".
First beta weekend was only for pre-orderers, so I think it was meant to be small. This weekend is open to all. No idea if it'll do any better, but that explains the low player count.

The main problem really comes down to the lengthy development cycle. Firewalk Studios was established in 2018 and thus it's quite likely this game has been in development for 6ish years. Trends have changed so much since then and now the hero shooter genre is totally oversaturated. That's not always an easy thing to predict and it would have been too late to pivot in a meaningful way as they would need new capital and permission from Sony to do as such.

If almost best possible PC build can't hit 144fps in supposed to be competitive FPS title then the game isn't optimized. Using Unreal 5 is very CPU heavy and needs to be optimized by Epic and game developers who design games that require higer fps than a slow story game.
Needs to be F2P. The cost of entry to then find out it’s not your jam; or you just play for a few weeks isn’t worth a full cost game. Plus getting friends to play is infinitely easier without a cost.
While I get that Lumen and Nanite are a pleasure to see, I think with a compentent baked presentation like this, and with relatively static small scenes, they wouldn't add much of anything to the presentation. If anything Lumen would likely look worse since it tends to be very noisy and imprecise compared to a high resolution lightmap which is baked from a full path traced calculation. Maybe slightly better reflections in places and better shadows for skeletal meshes and moving objects, but overall I think this approach makes the most sense(especially to target a wide audience).I think the end result trumps the method to acheive it. And yeah, I think more and more games will continue to drop Nanite and Lumen in the future due to a push for higher framerates and multiplatform development targeting the lowest common denominator(ie. Steam Deck/XSS/Switch 2?)

In general they have always been mediocre technicians, and as usual depending on what is missing or what is there, they were needed or not needed... It is called adaptability. If it's also on console, even if it's lame it's a pleasure, in fact they didn't beat Immortal, it was terrible but thanks to technologies it became good, now these aren't there and it's immediately good. Consistency cannot be done without (Cit.).

@@Packin-Heat. 💯 people forgot PS made or partnered with goated and varied MP games (or that had full MP modes) in the past, from Socom, Killzone, MotorStorm, MAG to Warhawk, Twisted Metal etc.. That’s why they got these new studios, to have some variety again as they should, if anything having successful MP/GaaS games helps to also invest on the traditional SP games etc..

💯🥱 The first major Sony PvP multiplayer game in over 11 years and they gives us a cartoony 1440p generic hero shooter. When we use to have Killzone 3 which was brutal & tactical. The Last of Us Online which is still popular and thriving. Socom, MAG, Warhawk, Twisted Metal 2012, God of War Online, Resistance 2 online. Mannnnn… PS3 was the best console ever. Back when Sony and other publishers made unique games. Now everything is either a hero shooter or a boring big Ubisoft open world where you do repitive fetch quest for 60hrs, fighting the same enemies, only difference is the size of their health bar.

A competitive shooter should really be able to hit 144hz or more on mediocre hardware. You don’t play those games for graphics. To be CPU at such a low resolution is ok maybe for a single player game but not a game like this.
Most pc gamers I meet on crossplay : "i won't touch a competitive shooter under 120hz preferably 320hz!" "hmm...what's your internet" "idk whatever our wireless is that I share with 2 other people streaming 4k Netflix and another guy seeding and downloading 100+ torrents..."

Multiplayer has been around since the start of video games, with Pong. It's fun and online multiplayer took it to the next level. "live service" is supposed to just make it an ongoing thing that gets updates, new content, server support etc and keeps the studio operational while doing it, in a mutually beneficial way. BUT it's mostly become a dumping ground for get rich quick schemes and lazy cash grabs that no one cares about. This game seems to suck because it's slow, creatively bland, boring, overpriced and is 100% dead on arrival.
It's 4 years into the PS5, man. Game seems like it might play fine overall just don't know what Sony were hoping would happen when showing those trailers. It looks like a game with absolutely no sauce and they overcompensated by making the guy with bearded dragon scales really like hot sauce.

@@Vorexia I wonder why a game like this, is getting a lot of hate for it's character design. Yet Overwatch gets a lot of love from people that follow the lore. Even like League of Legends, Valorant, Dota, etc. any game with a roster of heros all have characters that follow the same archetypes. Just saying but Concord does seem to have decently developed characters, rich in detail. Is it just they are trying too hard to be quirky, ragtag, type characters.

Whenever I see that games run well with a 4080 or 4090 I can only think, "well at least it's not a dumpster fire!" As a 6700xt owner I'm happy to hear TSR is available. Looks great as an AA method. I'd rather drop to medium settings with 100% TSR than upscale too heavily.
Idk, if the highest end card available only runs this mediocre looking game that doesn't even use any advanced features at 80 fps, I wouldn't call this optimized. UE5 moment I guess.
One advice for everyone: Don't jump to conclusions about the game without playing it first... the game will have an open Beta this week!!! play and draw your own conclusions...don't join the waves of hatred towards the game just because it's fashionable!!!!
Great analysis chaps. To me it looks competent whilst at the same time being largely soulless. It comes across as a mid point interpolation of a bunch of commercially safe cultural memes. I get and respect the effort and skill involved in its creating, I just think both could have been better invested.
I don't like FPS games, and I've never played a hero shooter before But I had a lot of fun with this, even though I wasn't very good at it The hate it's getting from people who have never played it or even own a different console is completely laughable. There is every chance this game fails, but it won't be because it's crap or bad. I appreciate that it does have an upfront cost which limits the microtransactions to cosmetics only rather than a whole series of passes and pay2win

Watch his DF Retro episodes on the Doom, Quake, and Turok series to get a feel of his commentary style. He covers a lot of games on the channel, and I can tell you that what he sees with this game is a lack of creative ingenuity. Seems like John’s gaming tastes are more like mine where he prefers games that are creative and use limitations of tech to their advantage to create a world that you want to get immersed into. You can definitely tell the difference in his enthusiasm when covering games that he can see clearly lack creativity like Concord vs. his recent videos covering some of the latest game trailers for games like Perfect Dark, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (his reaction was in a DF Direct posted on the DF Clips channel), and AstroBot.

It is called adaptability. If it's also on console, even if it's lame it's a pleasure, in fact they didn't beat Immortal, it was terrible but thanks to technologies it became good, now these aren't there and it's immediately good.

That’s why they got these new studios, to have some variety again as they should, if anything having successful MP/GaaS games helps to also invest on the traditional SP games etc..

💯🥱 The first major Sony PvP multiplayer game in over 11 years and they gives us a cartoony 1440p generic hero shooter. When we use to have Killzone 3 which was brutal & tactical. The Last of Us Online which is still popular and thriving. Socom, MAG, Warhawk, Twisted Metal 2012, God of War Online, Resistance 2 online. Mannnnn… PS3 was the best console ever. Back when Sony and other publishers made unique games.
Now everything is either a hero shooter or a boring big Ubisoft open world where you do repitive fetch quest for 60hrs, fighting the same enemies, only difference is the size of their health bar.

A competitive shooter should really be able to hit 144hz or more on mediocre hardware. You don’t play those games for graphics. To be CPU at such a low resolution is ok maybe for a single player game but not a game like this.
You need a faster CPU for low resolutions, not the other way around

Multiplayer has been around since the start of video games, with Pong. It's fun and online multiplayer took it to the next level. "live service" is supposed to just make it an ongoing thing that gets updates, new content, server support etc and keeps the studio operational while doing it, in a mutually beneficial way. BUT it's mostly become a dumping ground for get rich quick schemes and lazy cash grabs that no one cares about.
This game seems to suck because it's slow, creatively bland, boring, overpriced and is 100% dead on arrival.
Overwtach can easily hit 240fps+ though , same with Valorant...which is way more important for a competitive shooters
It's 4 years into the PS5, man. Game seems like it might play fine overall just don't know what Sony were hoping would happen when showing those trailers. It looks like a game with absolutely no sauce and they overcompensated by making the guy with bearded dragon scales really like hot sauce.

@@DisgruntledDoomer John makes most of the DF Retro videos, and I’d say the vast majority of DF content is produced by John. Watch his DF Retro episodes on the Doom, Quake, and Turok series to get a feel of his commentary style.
He covers a lot of games on the channel, and I can tell you that what he sees with this game is a lack of creative ingenuity. Seems like John’s gaming tastes are more like mine where he prefers games that are creative and use limitations of tech to their advantage to create a world that you want to get immersed into.
You can definitely tell the difference in his enthusiasm when covering games that he can see clearly lack creativity like Concord vs. his recent videos covering some of the latest game trailers for games like Perfect Dark, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (his reaction was in a DF Direct posted on the DF Clips channel), and AstroBot.
