With absolutely no familiar characters, which is the dumbest move of all. Nobody will be falling over themselves to buy a game to play characters that they don't have any sentiment for. At least the Overwatch developers were smart enough to use sex appeal to quickly engage player interest. Concord characters have zero sex appeal or heroic traits.
For a Japanese company, you'd think Sony, in their attempt to find live-service success, might get some ideas when they see Chinese and Korean companies printing *billions* selling *anime characters.*
Because if a live-service does well, it’s Fortnite or GTA Online. If a single-player game does well, it’s probably not even gonna do as well as Elden Ring. Those are quite rare. And even if it is… that probably made, what, 1/5 what Fornite did in the same year, if that?

I can't really in good conscience describe "Lawbreakers" as "not original." It was in development well into 2014 and 2015, it just released incredibly late relative to its initial teasers in 2015 as BlueStreak. It had a substantial degree of uniqueness to it as well - in 2015, "class-based FPS with Parkour and anti-gravity" was a lot more promising. Hell, do you have an actual mainstream game that uses anti-gravity as a principle mechanic?
From the handful of images I have seen of the game, it also seems to lack a great amount of visual feedback. The camera is always on a rail breaking any sense of speed or momentum, the health bars are less interactive than my mercury thermometer, and the abilities don't really seem impactful on screen. Maybe the gameplay is more fun than it looks, but I get the feeling that I'm watching a GPT-4 interpretation of Overwatch...
12:15 This is the real issue. They made a hero shooter and I don't want to be any of the "heroes" if that's what you want to call those designs. I don't think anyone wants to be those heroes. Which is why no one is playing this game. A friend of mine once told me "when most people play games they want to play a character that they want to be, or a character they want to f#&%" and I think it's obvious that no one wants to do either to any of these "heroes".
Great point, Marvel Rivals is doing just fine, one of the main reasons is because the heroes are precisely ones that people have fantasized as being for a long time. Overwatch did a very good job as a new IP, with it's cinematics and very appealing character designs. Hero shooters aren't dead, Concord just doesn't have appealing heroes.

For like 3 minutes, I thought "Huh, nice to see a sci-fi game really go all out on alien design. Good, Mass Effect deserves more single player clones, I might... and it's just Overwatch"
Yes, the cinematic trailer was clearly polished with interesting characters and a mysterious premise up until it was revealed to just be another Overwatch style shooter
"When they presented the characters people were stoked and pretty interested" Oh yeah the 30%-70% like to dislike ratio of that trailer perfectly encapsulate that
Nah, that's taking it too far. The Acolyte was written be people who can't write, about an universe they don't care. It's a product both mismanaged AND of low quality. Concord is only the former. You can criticize the art style for being bland and the genre from being over-saturated, but the monetization is _far_ better than anything Blizzard has made in the last two decades and it's clearly made by people who understand how a shooter should play like.
On the trailer: the time spent focusing on character and the environmental details sells itself as Mass Effect meets Guardians of the Galaxy/Firefly, where you play a crew of rebels out in the big bad galaxy. Instead it’s knockoff overwatch?? Make that make sense. They should have looked at the Team Fortress 2 trailers, or Overwatch trailers - where the trailer showcases each character is more of a class than a person.
What I can't get over is how, even if it were a 100 million budget, that it will be spent creating a thing that will get nothing but side-glances from anyone outside a pool of maybe 3000 people. If that. Even Madame Web probably got like a million people to watch it.
I don’t think you or anyone generally understood how corporations work. That like all seeing eye always watching thing is new. Execs don’t care until their money printers stop printing. They took a gamble on this random company they made promises and now they’re about to face layoff karate.
You really hit the nail on the head with the reaction to the trailer and then the developer segment. At the end of the trailer, I thought, "It seems a little cheesy, but looks like it could be really good." Then I heard, "5v5 shooter," and immediately stopped caring.

The thing I've noticed about this game is that people don't HATE it, they just. Don't care. It's yet another pvp team-hero-shooter, and although it looks perfectly decent, that, I think, is the issue. There's not really anything about it that makes it stand out in comparison to what people already have, for less cost. I am fully convinced it is the character design. They made this during peak Marvel burnout during peak hero shooter burnout. If they had you customize a character and bring in different builds like The Finals while keeping that setting and some of the customization, as well as the Destiny 2-style PVP, it might've had a chance. They are trend chasing so hard that everyone can see it.

People aren't tired of hero shooters, concord just looked so bad and, based on people who did play it, absolutely played terribly too Edit: Rivals is also a marvel game, so it's not marvel burnout too, between rivals and deadpool 3
Absolutely. I think part of it is we have been in an extremely solid chunk of time(sake of argument say past 10-15 or so years especially) where design people have been so afraid and running full sprint trying their hardest to not fall into generic bland military hero guy grey soup of prior eras of gaming, so people are just throwing any sort of oblong abstract design and barf of various color palettes and styles despite a lot of clashing. We also have been entrenched in an overload of media(most especially in movies and tv) where the template for personalities and character writing is ungodly shallow and uninspired so everyone just sounds and acts the same as you've seen before. Even going beyond Whedon-ism, we're nearly 20 years with people trying to make every character Tony Stark. I legitimately thought Concord first time I saw it was something an AI came up with because the designs and ways the characters were just seemed so done to death and playing right into what we've seen before. Even for a major product game, they couldn't have come up with something more interesting? On the physical model design I feel like the creators felt like having them look so absurd and jumbled would stick out but it weirdly just makes them seem almost too alike or just not all that appealing.Humans are programmed to patterns and some form of consistency order, oblong shaped Futurama side character rejects with Deadpool wise cracking we've heard 100 times over is not gonna cut it. It doesn't even need to be this bad. Look to the book Darius Kazemi did on Jagged Alliance 2 that had the creators of that game talking about how the goal was making a big playable character roster that yes did fit in the umbrella of action movie tropes and cliches but making them stand out and feel very different and unique which they 100% succeeded on.
That you say that there is an exhaustion of Marvel is a LIE, when we are literally still talking about Marvel, Marvel Rivals is one of the most anticipated games and there is literally hype for Marvel.
They better make this game CO-OP shooting adventure like Left 4 Dead 2 or Payday 2. "A colorful space themed game about a group of silly space adventurer working together to survive the evil space empire". There are way less competitor, compared to PVP Hero shooter.
your talk about the penalty for leaving matches reminded me in world of tanks there was a funny penalty system for friendly fire basically each offence would give exponentially longer penalty so a new player would get booted for like a minute but because it kept growing on your account with each offence the 12 year old accounts would accidentally oneshot a teammate and get banned from the game for 7 months

For real, it looks like each character is a sponge, and your entire ammo cache is needed to just kill one other player.
From the handful of images I have seen of the game, it also seems to lack a great amount of visual feedback. The camera is always on a rail breaking any sense of speed or momentum, the health bars are less interactive than my mercury thermometer, and the abilities don't really seem impactful on screen. Great point, Marvel Rivals is doing just fine, one of the main reasons is because the heroes are precisely ones that people have fantasized as being for a long time. Replace characters with waifu’s to keep the incels quiet? What did they ignore? The pricetag? I don’t know man, this game got so eyeballed upon it was made DOA by influencers and media itself.
@@DMP1982have a better idea I guess. I mean yeah I get what you mean the cash is spent but fuck me dude there has been so many dead live service games in the last half decade that it’s true boneheaded descion making to try and do overwatch again but with uninspired designs. This game looks like the half assed animation they use in movies for someone playing a game and not wanting to pay a company for rights to a game.
@@DMP1982 This "waifu" is for incels is PEAK projection. Know how I know? My wife is a weeb (I don't care for anime personally, against her best efforts I might add) and she LOVES hot female anime characters.
That mindset is definitely a "you" problem.
@@DMP1982 You know there are games that literally just have that (waifus for "incels") and they are super popular and profitable, right?
@LupeKDM It's not about the money, it's about sending a message.
Concord should've been Payday 2 in space cities, and the opposing team plays the cops or another group of robbers, both trying to get the objective. Could've been interesting.
To think this disaster is getting an episode in the upcoming "Secret Level" is beyond me…
If Overwatch never went free to play, maybe? this would’ve succeeded. But what shocks me the most is PlayStation funding 300M for this game. Holy crap that’s insane amount of money for a simple hero shooter lol
We all know we'll get TH-cam videos in 15 years about how this was actually an underrated hidden gem
Watch this game become free to play months after release and then die after a few weeks
Its more entertaining to watch a game like this fail than it is to try and play a game like concord
5:44 I can tell you why, people hate it so Sony is covering it up
I am fully convinced it is the character design.
Spending a lot of money on Animatics. Too. If they wanted to make a Movie... Why did they not make a Movie?
I hate "Story Based" PvP games. The last thing I play a PvP game is for the story
Maybe, burnout is key here, even the live service burnout. But the mechanics dont help at all.
Rivals was beating this game out of the water and it was a closed beta. People aren't tired of hero shooters, concord just looked so bad and, based on people who did play it, absolutely played terribly too
Edit: Rivals is also a marvel game, so it's not marvel burnout too, between rivals and deadpool 3
There are way less competitor, compared to PVP Hero shooter.
your talk about the penalty for leaving matches reminded me
in world of tanks there was a funny penalty system for friendly fire
basically each offence would give exponentially longer penalty
so a new player would get booted for like a minute
but because it kept growing on your account with each offence the 12 year old accounts would accidentally oneshot a teammate and get banned from the game for 7 months
This definitely is a game. No one can deny that.
They'd make more money allowing Bloodborne to be ported to PC then Concord will make in its entire lifetime.
FR I don't understand why they don't just release it on PC. That game is an instant goldmine.
Fyi, this video is now as old as concord's lifespan
"A lot of people interested in concord." Hahahah, oh my man said that seriously.
7:00 20 dollars for 3 days early in a multiplayer only game? I doubt it.
Gameplay wise i think it's look like have alot potential to be popular... IF this game was released 10 year ago and free to play
