It’s probably Bungie’s influence. They are heavily focused on game story/lore - the founders believes this is why people play their games, not for their gunplay feel, design and mechanics but for the story 😅
It might be petty but something that bugged the hell out of me was the characters having their little quip and pose every time you respawn. I was playing the chick in the hazmat suit one map and having to keep hearing “hear comes to expert *tap tap*” as I kept dying while trying to learn the mechanics was so aggravating. Even my wife who was just hanging out in the room reading was getting annoyed hearing the same barks over and over. It’s a little thing that just wore me down
That and every single match has a whole cutscene fade to black then cutscene of the ship landing, that gets old real quick, I dont even play OW anymore since the 2 BS but even OW has a quick load to insta pick your character, no wasted time
The reveal trailer looked like some kind of co-op heist game where you'd wander a city getting into trouble. "Okay, this might be cool" The game is a 5v5 arena shooter. "Moving on"
There's also a very good reason they put their least egregious character designs front and center in the cinematic rather than put a spotlight on the more "diverse" ones.
Ankaris has a point. Look at all these failed RTS's bc ppl don't want to use lame looking pieces. Same w a game w lame characters, why spend hours mastering a character you don't like the aesthetic of? It begs the question: are there hero shooters w more bad-a looking characters?
"Story-based 5v5 multiplayer hero shooter" sounds exactly like a word soup combo that only "market analysts" could come up with. You know, the people that think Game Design means "How the characters look". So from the get-go it reeks of being mandated by the upper management, not from some actual idea or passion.
I'm not hearing this mentioned enough. Everyone looks the same beyond 10 meters except for the trashcan bot, big woman, and not-drax. Character silhouettes are very important for this type of game. Overwatch and the upcoming Marvel Rivals game have this nailed down
They spent too much focus on giving the characters correct pronouns. I'm not even kidding, it's in the character select screen. No way I'm supporting another woke garbage.

Kindly point out where I'm wrong about this, I'll wait. Doesn't help the game is just another cookie cutter hero shooter.
Imagine the story of Destiny's seasonal stories, and instead of giving it all at the start, I'm thinking they'll chop it up in 12 segments, so like a TV show.
Fortnite BR story is a mess, but that’s the natural outcome of a live-service game: It will never have a logical, emotional and compelling conclusion or ending.
There is a small possibility that they have built a pipeline that allows them to produce those cutscenes (is just people talking into a room) for cheap. Like they build a system similar to what epic showed of Unreal using a iPhone camera to record the performance of a actor and them in minutes the engine translate that to a meta human character. If they didn't do something like that, there is really no way they can keep it up.
@@sugs0377I haven’t seen anything about this game having PvE outside of the weekly cutscenes. It’s only been shown and advertised as a PvP shooter, even by the devs themselves.
Ralph's track record of calling games unready for launch, with those games proceeding to fail disastrously due to launching in an unfinished state, is pretty spot-on. I hope the studio hears this, listens and pivots quickly.
Its weird that fighting games have learned that if you are asking for a full box price your game needs actual single player content before shooters have
@@micshazam842 His point is that they are improving it and learn from it. Look at SF6,KOF,Guilty Gear,MK,Tekken. They all added and innovated so much with practice tool, story modes, extra modes to play that doesn't mean fighting other people, customization, arcade culture on game virtually. The FG genre had innovated and stpo being lazy with no single player content. They are packed with content nowadays. FG understood their flaws and fix it.
I still think it's kinda crazy that fighting games have out the ass cosmetic monetization while still charging for DLC characters while also charging for the base game but I guess the fighting game fans are just used to it.
Anyone with half a brain could have told this dev team that their idea and timing of said idea was terrible. It’s an Overwatch clone that doesn’t do enough to differentiate itself and comes far too late into the game for people to care about it.
I imagine a big part of it will be the devs probably gave suggestions or warnings through development. But the decision makers decide, and now you’re releasing a half baked totally bland game to a saturated market
Yea, you can't help but feel bad for the developers. Either this was their idea and they were genuinely excited about it, only to be met with complete indifference. Or they were forced to build this and are now watching everything they warned their publisher would happen unfold. In either case I can't imagine the studio is feeling good right now. And with how the industry is, if the game underperforms, it's entirely possible we're talking about the studio getting shut down this time next year.
“This is like a Temu version of Marvel’s iconic Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.” Ok, tangent: it is still absolutely insane to me that the MCU was so successful that they pulled in a relatively unknown comic book run with sentient trees and cyborg “not raccoons” and gave it enough staying power that SkillUp’s calling it “iconic” and I’m in 100% agreement.
I mean even before the mcu, the guardians were still a big deal in comics and appeared in multiple TV shows and video games like avengers earth's mightiest heroes and marvel vs capcom 3. It does makes me miss the old version of the guardians before the mcu basically flipped their personalities.
That yellowish main character with the mohawkish hairstyle screams Michael Rooker’s GotG character - even though that’s just kind of a generic scifi/cyberpunk look, in my mind he owns it now
James Gunn put in his dues on nailing how to be a director of very entertaining films on low budgets. He and the team put a lot into GotG - it is the closest to a director driven experience in the MCU.
@@toledochristianmatthew9919 That's because Marvel was promoting them to the masses because they knew their movie was coming. So a talking raccoon and space tree are goofy concepts and massive risk for a blockbuster movie. Marvel does it all the time. Marvel Snap HEAVILY features America Chavez, a nobody character, because she was coming in Dr Strange. MvC had Capt Marvel before her movie, Dr Strange and Dormamu were in MvC3 before his movie. I agree pre mcu Drax being a brilliant savage tactician is better than the movie version. (It's clear Gunn doesn't care about character history/lore) But it's wild that a movie with a talking racoon and space tree made more money than Wonder Woman that year.
I remember being the only person pumped for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie back in high school because I had just read Annihilation When I went to tell about how cool the Guardians were to my friends everyone was like "lol a talking tree? 😂😂😂 a racoon? 😂😂😂 no one cares" Wasn't the only time either, the same thing happened with Ant Man
Every design philosophy and mechanic makes me think that the devs had a couple of men in suits on their team, constantly looking over their shoulders, making changes for them and always repeating, "But the chart says..."
The fact that there's a description that says there's a tutorial mode on the main menu when there isn't a tutorial on the main menu is insane. This game has a TERRIBLE new player onboarding experience. That might be fixed in the game when it launches, but you'd think they'd want to give beta players a good experience to get them to BUY the game when it launches. Insane.
@@14ElmStreet28 I'm not talking about running and aiming. @@SkillUp You're absolutely right about the sound design though. its indeed top notch and I'm glad that that's the case. coming from rainbow six siege and other tactical shooters, it's nice to be able to hear my enemies when they're around the corner.

@@mriguy7989 Yeah, I don't really get it either. I'd understand it if there were some more easy to miss things (like your average breakable boxes in an open-world game) that you might miss otherwise and wouldn't want to and the map would show those as small dots or something, but a radar that shows your enemies only when you're looking at them is odd. Maybe it has some interaction that'd make you want to look at it (like if there's a clone character and the map shows which is real), but still just weird.

"Game about to ship when it's not ready to do so really helps you understand why another game that was 'basically ready to ship' was cancelled" I'm sorry but that is just silly. I'm not saying Hyenas would've succeeded or anything like that necessarily, but one game targeted at a similar market releasing too early in its development doesn't say a thing about another game that didn't end up getting released at all. Maybe Hyenas was Overwatch (1) and it was absolutely ready and polished to excellency but SEGA decided to can it regardless. Most likely not, but it could've been.
All I can think when I see these cutscenes and character designs is "man this would have been a dope Brothers in Arms/Republic Commando-style squad shooter game". Have a nice single player campaign with 13 or so missions, let you play as different members of the crew from mission to mission, give unique and interesting squad commands based on which crew members are currently assigned to your squad, that would have been cool and I probably would have bought it.
I never liked how Hero Shooters have their story completely detached from the actual game, so these weekly story bits are the last thing that would get me to log on.
@@Highlander77Maybe it's about identification with the characters? Seems like a waste for a PvP shooter, but I guess many players don't like to be random, no-named grunts anymore either so some sort of character story is necessary.

I’m just so tired of these “characters” always being so quippy, smarmy, and just generally dickish towards each other. It’s fine once in awhile in a game here or there when it makes sense, but it’s just way too much and they’re insufferable lol.
It's a shame that people will latch to the title of the video, and not the excellent analysis itself. Playing this made me sad. So much talent and technical skill, and for what? I'm hoping it doesn't die early, but I can't see this working as a full priced game.
As much as everyone likes to make fun of Apex Legends and Overwatch, at least the character designers know how to make distinct designs. When looking at their characters, they ooze personality.
They forgot the memo that "sex" sells and decided to roll the dice with these character designs. Just look at the First Descendant while it isn't a 10/10 game they fucking know how to sell it and by god it is fucking raking it right now.
I actually disagree. While the pronouns are kinda irrelevant when it doesnt *play* like a story heavy game, the biggest pro for me is the variety and number of characters. Sadly that's the only positive thing i have to say about it.
Well, considering that pretty much all Sony puts out is action/adventure games, it comes as no surprise. They don’t really know how to do anything else.
Literally most games that anyone gives a shit about are that. Because those are the games that sell. Action/adventure and shooters is what most people want.

Yep It’s just greed and many of us would fall into the exact same situation were we CEOs of a gigantic company. Capitalism is really showing its Achilles heel and its greed (obvious I know but don’t recall it being as blatant 30 years ago) Much of the financial corruption they speak of in other countries is just called “lobbying” here Pay enough money to anyone or anything and they will listen to you For example Our TV ads are mostly pharmaceuticals now even though the consumer can’t buy prescription medication, they have to first go through a doctor. Which SHOULD mean there is no real reason for pharmaceutical companies to advertise when locked behind a doctors decision, BUT they own the doctors now so that’s why it’s so important Otherwise it makes no sense to advertise to people who cannot buy your product on their own Hes right about the pre order and all of the other stuff
I dont agree with never pre-order or buy day 1. You just have to be very careful which games you buy day 1. For example, I bought Tears of the Kingdom and pre-ordered it and I got a wooden plaque for pre-ordering. Want to know what I did? I sold that plaque on Ebay for $40! Over HALF of what the game costs. I also bought Ragnarok day 1, Elden Ring, Returnal, etc. You just have to be smart and pick the right companies that have a good track record for polished games at release.
seeing games try to do the overwatch thing right now is really weird, we already went through the "oh we need to make a super monetized small team PVP hero shooter! and make sure it's ALL ABOUT COMPETATIVE!" phase and those games basically died off due to a ton of issues, and one of the major ones that most people are NOT competative players. they play for fun. and now they're just... doing this again? while overwatch 2 is mostly hated by the general gaming base and it seen as a joke? like this phase already flopped it's like if everyone started making halo killers again after infinite failed. what is the plan here?
OW2 flopped only because of an extremely anti consument monetization practises at first and then they tanked it even more by not adding promised PvE mode. Not because it wanted to be competitive, at all really.
The plan seemed to be some overwatch/Destiny-killer bullshit that was thought up back in 2017 and was only finalized into a product now. I love this new era of game development where games will need seven years in the oven only for it's entire concept to become woefully outdated by the time the game is introduced to the world.
This is the only review I’ve watched that said the actually gameplay is fine. Everyone else says it’s clunky, the movement is slow, the TTK is waaaay too long, and that it feels like destiny map design with Rainbow 6 Siege movement.
I’m with that consensus opinion. I don’t know what Ralph saw that the rest of us didn’t but in the 10-12 hours I played of the beta on PS5, the gameplay was a clunky, slow, snoozefest. People could get into 1v3 firefights and have enough time/health to disengage and run away. Precision aiming with the DualSense was absolute ass compared to other shooters.
Skill up literally said everyone I have watched says the gameplay is great… All I think is, you blocked anyone not as woke as you so all you heard was praise.
I'll be honest, if Concord were a SP Immersive sim or an action adventure like the Guardians of Galaxy game I would be really hyped (I enjoyed the cinematic trailer) but as another MP hero shooter, especially so similar looking to Overwatch and the Marvel one, I have no interest in the game.
So, $40 USD for a bog standard hero shooter with its only defining trait being weekly cutscenes that feature annoying characters dropping Marvel quips? Yeah, I'll pass.
If they're going to have variants, I don't understand why it isn't just: pick character -> pick variant passive -> spawn in. Why is it separated like that?? It's like they wanted to make it a bit like character selection in a MOBA but then chickened out.
Yikes, that means peak concurrent player count for Concord's beta was less than half that of Age of Mythology: Retold's beta over the same weekend, which is, very affectionately, a niche RTS that only nerds like myself have the premium edition preordered for. Not boding well for Concord's launch next month then, gameplay aside.
@@chettlar212 True, but AoM:Retold was also a paid beta, and that's the (admittedly beloved) spin-off of a decades old RTS series, and it still got almost triple the numbers Concord did. However you spin it, only a thousand interested parties on PC (maybe less if you account for the 5 keys per pre-order) is and should be pretty worrying for the developer/publisher of such a high-budget game.
The only reason I remember this game is *specifically* because SkillUp called it a boring looking disappointment at Summer Game Fest where they were generally at least positive for everything else revealed. I can't even be bothered to remember it even though it's plastered all over the PS5 store
About variant customization “it’s baffling why firewalk would design it like that”. It’s simple: They now can sell the same cosmetic X however many variants for that character exist

Okay so you're essentially having a select your buffs convoluted behind a "class variant". This could be so cool and dramatic. Like you pick your heroes and your set of bufs(lets make them crystal shards) after each won round, your used shard breaks with a nice dramatic animation. You pick your next shard (and optional class) for the next round. As you strive for that victory, your tools twindle and things get more intense. Oh and less convoluted to explain, too. And if it's about restricting buffs, you could restrict the buff shards to roles so you can play those shards with specific classes only. You grind for new shard variants to expand your selection as you progress. Wouldn't that be fund? Oh, and did I mention.....LESS CONVOLUTED!
I can't even bring myself to finish this video. That's how much I could not care about this title. I didn't need a reviewer to tell me not to bother with this. Hopefully Firewall employees are looking for new jobs, cause layoffs here are inevitable at this point.
This game can be summed up with two words “Hot Garbage”! LITERALLY NO ONE ASKED FOR THIS NOR WANTED IT! We all wanted SOCOM, RESISTANCE, OR BLOODBORNE. Did they give us that? No! They gave us this trash. THANKS SONY! 😕😒🙁
Almost all of the cast look like regular ass cosplayers and rubber forehead aliens. Even the environments look like regular places scattered with sci fi props for a movie set. It feels like a knock off of a movie tie in game.
Dude, the whole game is a complete ripoff of every hero shooter that came before it. They even ripped off some stuff from Destiny which isn’t even a hero shooter.
Kind of. I know the big Drax looking guy looked familiar outside Guardians of the Galaxy, but he looks a little familiar to Steel from Paragon. ITZ looks a lot like Zinx as well. They look like an amalgamation of different characters.
Two things that I’ll speak into the void: 1) this game is very fun to play. The shooting is incredibly tight. The character kits allow for varied play styles and team synergies and abilities and their usage make them have purpose as opposed to just spamming them endlessly. Oh your abilities ran out of slot uses? Better get back in the action and get some kills to get some back. As someone who has played a lot of overwatch and destiny, this is a game that would pull off of overwatch (I’m never leaving destiny). 2) if Sony is married to the idea that they have to sell this game, they should at the very least make it free on PS+ for the first month to boost those initial numbers up risk free so word of mouth can spread afterwards
Yea apparently at GDC, Hero Shooters were the "New, hot shit" that most AAA publishers were trying to push. When in reality, the only successful hero shooters far as I can tell is Valorant and Overwatch, both of which at least have working anti-cheat, but only Valorant is even that successful. Meanwhile there's been tons of hero shooter failures.
Why do people think Marvel style humor and storytelling works in 2024? Its such garbage writing and overdone tropes. This one's going to be canceled fast.
So happy the pre-orders were low. Can't imagine people falling for that again and again. Look what the ones who did pre-order are gonna get.. Such a shame. Hopefully over time companies will start to figure it out, but I doubt by the time they do they'll have the funds to come back.
I actually really liked playing it. The presentation and mechanics felt really solid. It was a lot of fun. But I agree with everything said here. They need better publicity for this game and the story needs to be more forward for people to stick around.

Or they were forced to build this and are now watching everything they warned their publisher would happen unfold. In either case I can't imagine the studio is feeling good right now. And with how the industry is, if the game underperforms, it's entirely possible we're talking about the studio getting shut down this time next year.
“This is like a Temu version of Marvel’s iconic Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.”
Ok, tangent: it is still absolutely insane to me that the MCU was so successful that they pulled in a relatively unknown comic book run with sentient trees and cyborg “not raccoons” and gave it enough staying power that SkillUp’s calling it “iconic” and I’m in 100% agreement.

Of course free 2 play is great to get people in the door for sure, but I’m so tired of the free to play monetisation model. So I’m keen to see how that looks for concord, what’s earnable vs paid and what the price is
Doesn't matter if the core system is ass
Imagine excusing paid cosmetics in a paid game.
@@TheTundraTerrorno excusing required
@@TheTundraTerror I didn’t excuse anything. Mtx are gna be there no matter what, I’m just stating what model I’d prefer
Except Concord isn't competing with Helldivers.
There's no way you called a 1:1 ripoff of the Hunter dodge, tripmine, and throwing knife (full animations included) "borrowing" Ralph LMAO
It’s pretty standard nowadays for anything Sony says or does to get a free pass from game journalists and content creators. 🤷🏻♂️
@@mriguy7989Oh really? How was the reception for the Knack games again?
Tbf aren’t these devs directly from Bungie? Maybe he meant they were borrowing from their previous selves 🤣
@@randomguy6679 apparently you don’t know what the word “nowadays” means. 😂🤦🏻♂️
@@mriguy7989 Didn’t Stellar Blade get mixed reviews and didn’t Ralph shit on The Last of Us 2?
"Concord is coming out in 5 weeks"
I genuinely didn't know that, nor cared.
No one cares about how much you care. Why watch a video about something you don't care about? Nothing better to do?
@@racingbeats1493 Because skill up is good at making videos, and sometimes my opinion on things can be swayed if someone has enough positive thing's to say about something.
This was not the case, and my opinion stand's That I didn't care before, and now still don't. And even since commenting helps the video, here we are.
oh, and 17 people liked my comment so far, so people kind of do care.
Very interested in seeing how this game will perform against the upcoming Marvel Rivals. Both are new hero shooters, but Rivals seems like it will be free to play and will feature characters people already like.
Don't see how Concord stands a chance against that, not to mention other multiplayer games that already exist.
Right tbh this isn’t gonn pull me from Val or overwatch
And like u said marvel rivals looks promising and can’t wait for that
But 40 bucks for this idk ,
It's disgusting how much money is wasted on this slop
But he’s got a charming affinity for hot sauce!
No minimap? You have a mini-map though
The guy who looks like Yondu also collects bobble head type things…
I can't even bring myself to finish this video. That's how much I could not care about this title. I didn't need a reviewer to tell me not to bother with this. Hopefully Firewall employees are looking for new jobs, cause layoffs here are inevitable at this point.
This game can be summed up with two words “Hot Garbage”!
LITERALLY NO ONE ASKED FOR THIS NOR WANTED IT! We all wanted SOCOM, RESISTANCE, OR BLOODBORNE. Did they give us that? No! They gave us this trash. THANKS SONY! 😕😒🙁
It feels like this exact game came out 5 or 6 times already...
I think you were a little mistaken about the crew bonuses. The Crew bonus only applies to your CREW in the match... not the other players.
Almost all of the cast look like regular ass cosplayers and rubber forehead aliens. Even the environments look like regular places scattered with sci fi props for a movie set. It feels like a knock off of a movie tie in game.
I have a hunch about which studio might close next year.....
And well deserved.
Does anyone else see a few simularities between the character design and paragon?
Dude, the whole game is a complete ripoff of every hero shooter that came before it. They even ripped off some stuff from Destiny which isn’t even a hero shooter.
Kind of. I know the big Drax looking guy looked familiar outside Guardians of the Galaxy, but he looks a little familiar to Steel from Paragon. ITZ looks a lot like Zinx as well. They look like an amalgamation of different characters.
this game looks like if someone who absolutely fucking hate hero shooters were forced to make one lmao
The makers hate gamers.
I like how Linus's news channel tried to frame this as "Oh it's just good haha" casually gaslighting people like they usually do
Two things that I’ll speak into the void:
1) this game is very fun to play.
2) if Sony is married to the idea that they have to sell this game, they should at the very least make it free on PS+ for the first month to boost those initial numbers up risk free so word of mouth can spread afterwards
this game will be shut down in a year
Strong LawBreakers energy.
This is Foamstars all over again.
Why do people think Marvel style humor and storytelling works in 2024? Its such garbage writing and overdone tropes. This one's going to be canceled fast.
Developers need to start asking themselves, "who is our game for? Who are we appealing to?"
So happy the pre-orders were low. Can't imagine people falling for that again and again. Look what the ones who did pre-order are gonna get.. Such a shame. Hopefully over time companies will start to figure it out, but I doubt by the time they do they'll have the funds to come back.
"to their credit, the levels are functional playspaces" oh man that's just dire
The characters move when I tilt the stick forward. The guns fire when I hit the trigger
Wow. They should arrest the designer for being criminally passive aggressive towards the asperger's community.
I actually really liked playing it. The presentation and mechanics felt really solid. It was a lot of fun. But I agree with everything said here. They need better publicity for this game and the story needs to be more forward for people to stick around.
Flight... of.. the Concords?
