    One thing you can do to get the bike a little lower to the ground is go into the rider configuration mode and put the suspension in off road mode and the other settings to your liking. This will lower the preload on the rear and effectively lower the suspension. That is what I did on my 2016 XRT Explorer, made a world of difference with no loss of on road handling.

    Just picked up a Tiger 900 GT Pro. As this is my first ADV I went with the 900 but may upgrade to the 1200 in another year or two. Still getting used to this style of bike after riding a Roadglide for the past 4 years but so far I am pretty pleased. Got engine guards, hard bags and a handle bar riser coming. Hoping to get in a long trip this summer.

    I got mine 2 weeks ago, and I just love the way that responds on the highway and how light it is, from my previous Tiger 1200 2020. looking forward to adding a lot of miles to it.

    I will add my experience on the 23 GT Explorer which I picked on Oct 6. After the first 100 miles, i had no stalling issues at all and all functions worked as designed. My only complaint is that the windshield allowed too much wind on both shoulders at low highway speeds. It is a very easy bike to ride with the caution that it is tall so I can't flat foot it. Now I'm off for an afternoon ride. C

      I have taken it to 300 miles and had a half gallon left in the tank. So, 315 to 320 is possible, but would never try to do that. Good to know that 300 is possible with a small cushion.

    Highly prejudice here, but I think you'll love the bike. The Sport Bikes of the Sup Ten, the Triumph you have are such great road machines and yet made for sporty travel. I love heading cross continent with mine and suspect you will as well. I'm too old for serious off-road stuff, but this class is offering that potential.

    Good luck.
    My best friend bought a new 2021 Triumph Tiger 900 GTPro and has put 22,000km on it in 18 months.
    In the first 18 months it has spent 4 total months in the shop being fixed cause it's always broken.
    Lots and lots and lots of computer problems. Engine lights on, limp mode, quick shifter + cruise control stopped working and the bike dies for no reason.
    The quality of the triumphs is also a problem.
    At 22,000km he has had to replace his fork seals because they were leaking.
    By comparison my 2019 Super Tenere that I bought in 2020 has 52,000km on it and I've done nothing to it.
    He also already had to replace his front/rear sprockets and chain at only 20,000km.
    Triumphs are Crazy expensive to maintain.
    His 20,000km valve check and oil change was $2,000!!
    By comparison my 40,000km valve check and oil change was $450 on my Tenere.
    In the first 18 months he has spent about $4,000 on regular maintenance to maintain his warranty.
    Thank God he bought the extended warranty....he will need it.
    His Triumph is such a bad bike he will be selling it in the spring and go back to a Japonese motorcycle so he can actually ride it.
    I hope you have better luck with yours.
    Ride safe.

      Been watching your chanel for some years now. I love your common sense approach to picking our bikes. Accept for the bmw 😏. But love the content. Keep it coming. And as far as the triumph goes, great bike. I haven't seen to much go wrong with any of them. Very few issues with the tiger 1200s over the years. Out of all the European bikes out there, the tiger 1200s are probably the most reliable. Now as far as the other triumph models I don't know but I have seen some issues with the other models. But I think you gone enjoy that tiger 1200 for many years to come. Please keep us informed on the maintenance and cost with it. I'm thinking of purchasing one myself. Thanks and have a blessed day...

    Congratulations on the new bike! I have been interested in Triumph motorcycles for a while, but the nearest dealer was over 2 hours away until a few months ago. We now have a dealer in Albany, NY, but I have not had time to visit their showroom. I am glad that the Triumph feels more like a motorcycle. I had tried the BMW 1600 several times and really wanted to like it, but it always felt very appliance like. I prefer something with a different feeling. Perhaps one of the Triumph bikes is in my future?
    I will be interested in how the Triumph progresses over time.
    THANK YOU!
    Jim

      Something like the K1600 or the Goldwing is really comfortable and smooth, but you are right they to take away from that visceral feel of riding. Pros and cons to that or course. We shall see how the Tiger does over time, but so far I am really enjoying it.
      Thanks Jim!

    Great initial review, look forward to updates. I'm currently riding a BMW R1250RT and I'm looking at a 2023 Triumph Tiger GT Pro. I'm going to be test riding it this coming Sat. My BMW has just under 20K miles and has been reliable for the most part but servicing has become insanely expensive and my local BMW dealer is not great, yet is very expensive. My 12K mile service was just under $1100. That is more than I pay to service my MB E450 wagon with a twin turbo 6 cylinder engine. Stay safe.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  ปีที่แล้ว

  • @willbilly2000

    Craig i just put panniers on my pan america im thinking about the top case like you have on your tiger. Does it change the handling? My pan america is a bit top heavy and im not sure about it? But i have a electra glide with tour pack and really like the storage. I was just woundering your take on it being you have had the bmw touring bike with a tour pack on it.I need your expert opinion!! And that new tiger adv sure is a sharp bike, good trade!!

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  ปีที่แล้ว

      Adding a top box will affect handling, but how much depends on the bike and how much you store in there. Top boxes can also change the aerodynamics at speed, which is very bike dependent. The BMW had a tendency to move around a bit on the the highway. If I removed the top box, that went away, for the most part.. So far I do not feel that on the Triumph. I primarily added the top box on the Tiger for Cathy, so she could ride with me on occasion. For solo travel, I actually prefer having a flat surface to strap waterproof bags. That is how the Tenere was set up. With that said, the locking top case does come in handy for small things like phones, cameras, your helmet. I try not to put anything heavy up high. If I was doing off-road travel, I would remove the top case and go with soft bags. So I guess the answer is that there are gives and takes. Think about the type of riding you are doing and what will be the most flexible for you. Thanks!

One phone call to Norwich CT saved me 2k for the same bike but only blue from black. Anyhow can't wait to begin my journey on adventure touring bikes! Similar to you, I bought a Tiger 900 Rally Pro, coming off of 7 years of riding a Trophy SE. That had a silky smooth 1215 triple, huge OEM windscreen, and a custom seat by Bill Mayer Saddles. Looking at the much smaller windscreen on the Tiger, I thought for sure that I would be buying an aftermarket one. No need, as I get zero buffeting, just wind on my shoulders (it was virtually still air on the Trophy). The vibration is there, but as you mentioned, I don’t really notice it anymore, even on long trips. And the seat, while not quite like the custom one on the Trophy, is good for 300 miles or so before I really notice it’s there.
    One question for you: You haven’t mentioned the shift assist feature yet. I initially thought it was a bit gimmicky, but find it amazing, and use it most of the time, but never into or out of first gear. It’s almost like flicking a switch as opposed to shifting gears!
    Looking forward to more ride reports!

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback on your Triumphs. It is good to hear that other riders are really enjoying them. I just did a video comparing the Tenere to the new Tiger and in it I mention the shift assist. That is a cool feature, and it works very well. That video will be up in a few weeks as there are a couple more in front of it.

    So I now have 6,000km on mine and the buzzing has pretty much gone. I found that it was more buzzy over 4,000rpm but if you slightly loosen your grip on the bars it will make a huge difference. Was going to go with a set of Grip Puppies or that anti vibe tape but will hold off for now. Personally I love the seat but hate the windscreen, I am going to have to replace it, just too much buffeting.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just got back from a three day trip and I did not notice the buzzing as much. The bike maybe getting broken in or I am just getting used to it. Also, the seat seems to be getting broken in as well, I did not have any butt issues. Interesting about the buffeting. I ran a couple hours on the interstate with crazy people at 80 and did not get any. At those speeds the windscreen does shake a bit, but I felt fine and the bike was solid. I was running the screen at the top

    I own the 2023 Tiger Explorer Rally and its been amazing. I have almost 20k on it with no issues whatsoever. I would recommend if you do any water crossings above the axel that you change the shaft oil soon after as water will get into the oil there but its easy to do and a bottle will last you forever (there is a bulletin on putting some RTV around the seal of the breather which I have done but still water will get in there). I suggest renewing the clutch brake fluid after about 10k as the OEM fluid gets really nasty (not the brake side for some reason) and there is a bulletin on changing it from Triumph.

Because whilst dont doubt quality will be fine from the tailand factory imo a brit bike should be available from a uk factory as bmw do in berlin and happily they are adding more models to the uk factory including the tiger. They are booming right now over 80000 bikes in 21 the old triumph only eber sld 40 odd thousand so i will be considering a tiger maybe next year my preference would be same as yours but in the satin green trim lovely bike dude

    I was the first one in the US to take delivery of the GT Explorer back in July 2022. I got lucky, I traded my 2020 1200 XCX for it in March 2022 and waited all summer with no news on when it would come in. In the mean time I kept walking past the new Speed triple 1200 RR and told my dealer to take the trade of my last Tiger and I would pick it up the next day. As I am loading the RR in my trailer, my GT Explorer showed up and the crate was dropped behind my trailer. I told my dealer that I will pick that one up tomorrow! LOL! 2 new bikes in 2 days! Not touting any brand but I have ridden over 100,000 miles in the last 10 years and spent only about $900 on repairs on my HD touring bike. Maintenance was nothing other than normal. Not bad!!!!! • @LivingOffTheSlab

      You are of course correct, none of these things are cheap and I would not have complained about the BMW if it did not give me trouble. I only spent a $200 on "repairs," everything else was routine. Then you add in UHaul and car rental for a week, that was the killer. I would expect things to go wrong at 60,000 miles, not at 15,000. Hay mate , I don’t think they changed the engine to improve the sound , it was more for low end tuque ( for off road ) as the previous triple you needed to use more clutch - which wasn’t good . So hence the 270 degree crank . The previous triple still the the road series like the new 660 Tiger sport I my option does sound WAY better then the new 270 degree engine. BUT I understand why they done it . And yes have heard about the vibs the 900 is the same . Anyway happy trails 👍

I'm going to put the Voight 20mm bar risers on and move them back to the second hole which will bring the bars back 26mm, over an inch. 20 mm is the highest you can go on the explorer without buying front brake line extenders. It would be the perfect bike if it didn't vibrate so much. Nice review btw

    Since you got rid of the BMW and Vision that were both larger and PASSENGER friendly, how does your wife like climbing on and off this Triumph? My wife stills rides behind me after 42 years but these adventure bikes are challenging to mount and don’t have the space. Also, does the low seat cause you to bend your legs more? Are lowered pegs available? I also don’t think I would wait 10k miles for an oil change. I sold my last Triumph 1200 SE because the dealer is 2 hrs away and they were calling me in for too many software updates.

    Hi from Calgary, Alberta. I have 50,000kms on my 2020 super tenere. It’s my 2nd ST. I have a $2200 Mai tenancy service coming up in the spring. I’m debating if I should keep my bike and do the service, get another super tenere at $21,000 or get a triumph tiger explorer 1200 for $27,000. Very hard choice! Love the super tenere but I wish they give it an update. Love the explorer triple engine with quick shifter. I had a baby GS and a F800R. No more bmw for me! Can you offer any advice? Thanks and take care.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab

      For sure the required maintenance on these kinds of bikes gets expensive, but it the bike is running well and doing a good job for you, it is far cheaper to do the service than to buy another bike. I am coming up on the 20K mile service for the Tiger and it is going to cost a couple of grand US. These costs are just part of owning a modern motorcycle and while the Triumph is a bit cheaper on a per mile basis (when you include oil changes, etc.) the difference is not that big that I would switch just for maintenance costs. I would also not buy another Tenere, the bike has not changed in the three years you have owned it. Do the maintenance and keep enjoying it.
      On the other hand, if you are just looking for something new and want more power, better brakes, better suspension and all the technology that comes on the Tiger, then that would be a reason to change. All around the Tiger is a better bike than the Tenere and I hear the 2024's are being updated with even more tech (radar cruise, being one thing). So far I have 15K miles on the bike and it has had no major issues. Just a small oil leak from the oil filler cap (solved with an O-ring) and the seat adjustment elastic broke (this is not a good setup). But, those are minor. Everything else has worked great!

  • @LTVoyager
    @LTVoyager ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would be very leery of 10,000 mile oil changes for a couple of reasons. 1. Most manufacturers also include a time limit of no more than 12 months and few of us ride 10,000 miles every year so that may well be the limiting factor on oil change mileage. I tend to ride my BMW 5-7,000 miles a year and that fits nicely with their 6,000 mile/12 month interval. 2. Extended intervals often require use of synthetic oil and special oil filters which often cost twice what conventional oil and filters cost, so the 10,000 miles may not really save you all that much money, particularly if you do your own maintenance as I do. If you are paying a dealer to change your oil, then you will save labor cost with the less frequent changes.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes it is 10k or 1 year whichever comes first. I would always change oil at least once per year prior to storing it for to the winter. Personally, I am not going to worry about this very much. I am going to follow the manufacturers recommendations and enjoy riding the bike.

    • @ernestoluzan

      I purchased 100% synthetic oil (Maxima) and a hi-flo filter. Did my own service. The motor oil, filter and final drive fluid cost me 97 dollars with tax. 60 dollars to reset the the service light. So roughly 165 bucks for an annual service. That’s very reasonable

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ernestoluzan I use conventional oil at about $8/qt and Bosch filters at about $6 each. So, my annual service on my BMW is about $38 (excluding final drive which does not need to be done even close to annually) which is far more reasonable than $165. $127, even at today’s $4/gallon gas, is enough to ride 1,500 miles on my BMW. I’d rather ride 1,500 miles than pay money for oil and filters that add no value.

    • @ernestoluzan
      @ernestoluzan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LTVoyager I’m not sure what you mean by “add no value”. Synthetic oil isn’t a gimmick. Conventional oil, even at shortened intervals has been proven to lose protection additives and cause higher acid levels on your crankcase.
      Dont take my word for it, I send all my oil base types and send a oil analysis in on my truck, motorcycle and atv’s once a year. Time intervals make ZERO Sense. Triumph has a 10k or annual service because they want to make sure people have a line. I’ll sample my oil at one year or 10k whichever comes first to see what my TBN and TAN are. Then and only then, will I set my own oil drain intervals

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ernestoluzan I did not say synthetic was a gimmick. I use it in my cars and trucks since the 1970s as they get operated often at below zero temps or have turbochargers that run very hot. Synthetic adds value in those conditions. My motorcycles seldom run at temps below 30 degrees or above 100 and none of them are turbocharged. Synthetic adds no value in this operating regime. My BMW K1200LT is approaching 100,000 miles running on conventional Castrol oil. The cams look like new and this is with 6,000 mile or annual changes. Using synthetic in my BMW or my KLR650 would be a complete waste of money.
