    wow that is a shock that the Triumph is cheaper to maintain overall. People I know with 2016 and 2018 models say you dont spend a lot unless its a service for a valve check. The GS if you doost of the maintenance yourself is cheap to own as well. Great and informative video. Thanks and stay safe out there

    Really informative video. Appreciate how thorough it is, and the quality of it! It’s good to know how much I have to look forward to paying out. Not too bad in my opinion for a great bike!
    Planned a trip to the “Windy 9” mid Sept. using a lot of the techniques and information that you shared on your past trip. Can only do a long week end though. So I’ll incorporate the Triple Nickel into my route to the hotel. Staying 3 days, leaving the morning of the 4th day. Will only ride 4 of the big routes so I can enjoy it, leave time for sight seeing and such.
    Depending how I feel afterwards, I’ll likely come back in the Spring to finish the routes.
    I’ll have to join your website to get better tutorials on creating routes, gpx files, and moving them to various devices etc.
    Thanks!

    THANK YOU! Those costs fall pretty much in line with what I expected. I would also like the comparison to include the tires for all three bikes. I almost bought the BMW 1600
    GTL, but after looking online at the over all costs including tires, I decided that it seemed a little extreme. I agree that no larger bike that can do long distances is going to be cheap to maintain, but some are double the others.

    I have had clutch issues two times : a first time at approximately 3000 and a second time at 6000 miles. At the dealership they purged each time, but if the problem emerges a third time, I will urge them to replace the slave cilinder which apparently causes the problem. Your reviews are very pleasant and nice indeed ! Lovely ! But meanwhile, mine is for sale in Belgium.

    Great video Craig, love the shirt by the way! I believe Triumph and BMW service costs are pretty pricey and I’ve owned both brands so I have first hand experience! I’ve owned 3 Aprilia’s and service cost here in central Texas are quite reasonable compared to BMW and Triumph.

    When I was shopping for a new touring bike a few yrs back I compared several, maintenance costs in particular to each other. Hands down the Goldwing was the cheapest to maintain long term vs the 2 others i looked at. I currently do all my own maintenance and will continued to do so. Everything but tire changes anyways.
    Whatever I haven't done as far as maintenance goes I will learn to do. Heck the air filter replacement on my bike is a 3hr + job alone. At some point in time I wont be able to do the simple maintenance anymore and will be forced to pay to have it done. Until then...I actually enjoy wrenching on my bike.
    I do the more difficult tasks in the winter months....I did the fork seals and changed to a heavier set of springs last winter... when the bike is in hibernation so I don't have to rush to complete anything. In some cases I have done the maintenance earlier than needed over the winter so as to not have to bother during riding season.
    Bottom line is any bike no matter the brand is expensive to take to any dealer for maintenance.

    Greate vid! I´ve the Tiger Rally Explorer. I´ve the same experience. I bought my bike in Novembre last year and the mileage is now about 24000 km. I also don´t like serve all inspections myself. I did a long travel in my holydays this year. About 7500 km in eastern europe (to turkey from germany). And I´ve also your mind about the dependability of the bike.
    I give the bike to service before start the travel. And I payed for complete service including new wheels about 750 €. I use the "metzeler caroo street". For me a fantastic wheel. And the standing of this wheel is more than 15000 km (without offroad). I will change the clutch handle, because offroad an urban you need the clutch more. The original clutch handle ist not optimal useable if you have always two fingers on. The new clutch handles have better setting options. I will do more offroad. For me is this bike perfect.
    Thanks for this video! It´s exactly my experience. Have good times with your bike and best wishes from Germany. Joachim

    I remember when riding bikes was cheaper than driving cars, but that is no longer the case. When I computed my cost per mile for my LT, it was higher than all of my cars and only cheaper than my K2500HD pickup and only because the pickup gets 14 MPG. Any car that gets more than 25 MPG is likely cheaper to operate than any motorcycle of 1,000cc or larger.

    Well, I have a Tiger 1200 GT Explorer too. It replaced the previous generation of Explorer. Both bikes are, in my experience, very reliable though this new variant is, in my opinion, considerably better. Looks better, handles better, more power, better brakes, fantastic suspension and waaaaay more fun. Great job Triumph. I will say though, I also have a Triumph Rocket 3 TFC, I can honestly say, nothing beats that beauty.

    I have a 2019 K1600GT which I just really enjoy . And as you stated expensive to maintain. Fortunately I’m very mechanical and do all of the scheduled maintenance myself. I purchased the tool to reset the service lights and scan for codes. I was surprised to hear how you were going through tires. I typically get a minimum of 9K and that is to the wear strips. I will admit the valve inspection is a bitch of a job and it usually takes me two days as I like to clean every part as I remove them. I enjoy this work and I’m retired now so I have plenty of time on my hands. My only beef with modern bikes is really the cost of the oil. I totally feel violated paying upward of $17 per quart. Granted it does last 6k miles. As they say you can’t take it with you and I love my bike and riding it. I just completed a 6k trip to Nova Scotia from Tampa FL this June and the bike performs well.

      Tires were lasting about 6k for me. I could maybe have gone maybe to 7k but I was usually heading out on trip so I had them changed at the normal service. I loved riding the K, but mine just had too many problems to justify the costs.

    In my earlier years of owning a variety of on and off-road bikes, I did my own maintenance and repairs and it would never occur to me to take it to a dealer. Usually couldn’t afford it even if I wanted to. That changed with my ST1300 because it had problems and it was expensive. Then I went to Harleys and went back to doing my own maintenance, but they went to an independent shop for any repair stuff, and my 08 Road King was in for engine and suspension upgrades so it could keep up with traffic.
    I anticipated maintenance costs on my K1600, but I didn’t factor in replacing rear tires at nearly every oil change! I could do my fluid changes on it, But plugs, coolant and air filter would take me all day to tear into the bike just to get to them. It has been dead on reliable, so no repair costs. Just $$ to farkle and sort it to fit my 6’5” self. I take it to a BMW dealer for the scheduled maintenance because they are 20 minutes away in the SLC area, and their service department is really good. Just too convenient to pass up. Problem is, they are also a Triumph and Ducati dealer, and I can’t keep my eyes off the tigers and Multistradas!w
    Bottom line since the ST1300, which is the cheapest to maintain? My ‘21 Hyundai Palisade.

    Interesting vid, thanks for sharing the info. I have a 2019 BMW R1250RT. Service intervals are 6K miles. The 6K miles intervals are just over $400 and the large service which is every 12K miles and that puppy goes for $1040. It is a total rip off. I'm in Austin TX and my dealer's labor rate is $145/hr. I'm out of warranty now so going to find an independent and hopefully save some money.

    I'm in AZ, and I spend close to $500 for just the 500 mile service, so this seems reasonable as hell. The only issue we had was the software update. The 20k service difference might be depending on whether they need to do more than just check the valves. My valve check required no setting as they were within spec. If they had to reset then it would cost a lot more.

    I was able to minimize my maintenance costs by purchasing a maintenance contract when I bought my Tiger 900. It cost me $1400 and covered the first SIX services. Paid for itself by the first three, and I didn't have to do any of it myself, although in the past I usually did the same maintenance you do on your bike. FYI, when it's time for another set of tires, you might want to give a set of Dunlop Trailmax Missions a try. I got 17,000 miles out of my first set (seriously!), and the rear tire still had almost half the tread left, but were really flattening out. The front was cupping, as every tire I've had on my bikes will do, but still had some tread left as well. They're very good on dirt & gravel roads as well.
    I'm still thinking of trading my 2017 Trophy SE and the Tiger in on a new 1200, but that 900 is so good I'm having trouble pulling the trigger. I think the 1200 would be better at longer highway trips, which is what I like to do, although not likely as good as the Trophy, which is insanely good. It's just getting too top heavy for me (I'm 66), much more do than the 1200 or the 900. Might just sell the Trophy and keep the 900 - time will tell. Enjoy that bike - Triumph makes a helluva nice product!

    It think most motorcycle owners agree that BMW's are expensive to maintain. It is a given and part and parcel of that ownership. The other side of the coin is how much more expensive is the BMW than other brands and is the cost difference worth the ownership and when, if ever, does it get too prohibitive. For me a few dollars more every year or two is not going to make of break me as it relates to riding what I want. Harley's, Indians, Moto Guzzi, Ducati, Gold Wings, Triumphs and BMW's are all expensive bikes to purchase and maintain. Just because one brand might be a few hundred dollars more or less than another is probably a moot point in terms of ownership. If a person wants a Harley they ride a Harley and so on with the other brands. It costs what it costs and that is the entry fee to ride what we want and stay in motorcycling. I try not to let the cost of ownership influence my decision to ride what I want. I wear KLIM gear and sure I can find less expensive jackets and pants but I want to ride with KLIM stuff. I have some expensive accessories on my bike, and, of course, I could use Chinese knock off parts that cost way less. It is all relative in the end. We do what we want with our money and if we like to ride motorcycles, like you do, it becomes more than just a hobby, it becomes part of our lives and to that end it is worth investing in it. .

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. I would still have the K1600 if it had not had issues. I was willing to pay the price as long as it worked. Unfortunately I got a lemon.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t think BMWs cost much more new. When I was looking at replacing my LT a few years ago, the K1600s and the Gold Wing were within $1,000 of each other in price. Many BMWs come with things standard that other bikes have as options. Once you get the bikes similarly equipped, the BMWs really aren’t much more expensive. However, the service and parts cost is another story and the sparse dealer network is a real pain. I am looking at moving away from BMW for those reasons and the fact that BMW is now making it very hard for owners to maintain and repair their new BMWs.

    I'll gues you have to add another 60% of the 475 $ 10.000 mile service cost, to come to the same 26K miles in total. So a 25O ish dollars plus will bring it around 3000 $ for the same milage. Which is still a fair amount of money less. Thanks for this info.
    I use my bike as a 1st vehicle. Lots of guys on forums are always laughing when you talk about cost of ownership because it is 'just a hobby'. But for real life use I like to know how much I can expect to pay p kilometer.

    Thanks for the vid. I'm just about to get my CB650R serviced again in the UK. When anything costs over £200, I always moan and get a discount. What would the consequences be if you ignored the valve check? I think that just for a look at them, the price is extraordinary - as you said, the tolerances are so much better these days. I think I would wait for some strange noises before I had the valves adjusted. This wouldn't destroy the engine and would save a lot of money. Or, you could buy the new HD that doesn't have shims or any other need for adjustment. The labour charge that you quote are really high. I wouldn't even worry about the warranty and I'd go to an independent for servicing. It really is close to larceny.

    There is mounting evidence in the automotive industry that these longer service intervals are very harmful. The industry knows the vehicles will make past the warranty mileage but get some great marketing points. So they issue these silly intervals.
    It's not the breakdown of the oil that's an issue. It's the build up of contaminants that begins to clug small oil passages. Just do a search on Fords eco boost engines. Some have a tough time hitting a 100k. Others 200k no problem. The people who followed the long recommended intervals' engines failed at an alarming rate.
    Oil changes are cheap insurance. Plus it's fun to head in the garage and working on your bike.
    Best of luck

    I have been looking at the 900 Tiger. I like the back lit switches and the rear lights flashing under hard braking. But the valve service is time consuming. It looks like for 2024 valve service is increased from 12K to 18K. I’m used to doing my own service but I have BMW boxers and Harley’s. I don’t see why these “modern” motorcycles couldn’t go 50K between valve checks. I have 60K on my 2015 BMW GSA and clearances are still in spec. The ‘15 is the water head with shim under bucket. Cost of ownership on it and my ‘19 Road King has been a fraction of what you paid because I have been able to do the maintenance myself.
    I could do the valve service on the Tiger but at 65 I would rather be riding than spending a day tearing half the bike apart to do a routine service.

    Try comparing a Ducati. I do my own work on my Triumph Street triple. I don’t think I would have the ability to maintain the Ducati. It’s over $1000 to check the valves every 8000 or 18,000, depending on the bike. Otherwise, I would like to purchase one.

      I do not know of any major differences. Not sure if the EU version has the extra shutoff switch. The bike gets around 40 miles per gallon (40-42). I can go 300 plus on the 8 gallon tank. Last ride the warning light came on at 303 with 45 remaining... according to the bike.

    Gosh, owning a motorcycle is so cheap! LOL!!! Curious which tires you will go to on your Triumph when you change them. You certainly must be paying NE prices, I thought things were pricy here in the SF Bay Area. My 6K services on my GA are about $375, tires were about $700 and the 18K will be in the neighborhood of $1,700 at the SF BMW dealer. I did always like the Triumphs before I bought my GSA, only thing was that it was so top heavy plus the heat on my left leg was unbearable. Hopefully those have be fixed since the 2018 models. Riding to Canada with a buddy up the Highway 1 coastline just after Labor Day on the GA.

  • @LTVoyager
    @LTVoyager 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The problem with going to the longest valve check interval is that it gives a false answer. The reason being that you have used up part of the valve change interval on the bikes with shorter intervals, but you haven’t accrued the cost for that. The only way to accurately compare is to do a cost per mile for each of the services and then add up the cost per mile. Would it make a difference in your comparison? I can’t say for sure, but I suspect if you accrue the cost of the part of the next valve service that you have consumed on the BMW and Triumph, the Yamaha might be closer.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have to pick a number to stop, I picked 26K. If I push the Tiger out to 26K and say it used 60% of the next scheduled service at 30K ($750) that would add another $450 approx. I could go out further, but then I have to do that will all the bikes.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LivingOffTheSlab Actually, you don’t have to pick a number to stop at if you normalize the costs per mile using the mileage where each bike’s service is repetitive. It is like cash accounting compared to accrual accounting.
      Using your figures, I calculate the cost per mile to be as follows: BMW 24 cents, Yamaha 16 cents and Triumph 14 cents. Now, this is skewed slightly by the non recurring initial service costs, but otherwise, you can now compare the costs without regard to the miles between major services assuming that the services are completely repetitive every 18,000 miles for the BMW, every 26,000 miles for the Yamaha and every 20,000 for the Triumph. Since the Yamaha’s major service comes halfway between oil changes (that was stupid on Yamaha’s part), I did add half of the 4K service cost to get a true per mile cost at the 26K point. Since a major part of the Yamaha cost is oil changes easily done at home, I would say that for most of us the Yamaha is the least expensive to maintain by a good margin. These results aren’t too surprising as it is pretty well known that you have essentially three categories of bikes in regards to maintenance and repair cost. You have Harley and BMW in a class of their own. You have most of the European brands in the middle. And you have the Japanese brands at the low end. Your numbers pretty much confirm that, particularly if you are willing to do your own oil changes. I am quite surprised that Yamaha calls for 4K oil changes as my Kawasakis have all been 6K miles as is my current BMW.
