    Even as a Chinese, I’ve learned so much from your video about the official entertainer system of North Sung dynasty plus background info on the male lead’s academic achievements etc. Please continue with your good work to lift us to a whole new level of appreciation of the drama and culture of that time!

    One of the things I have noticed in the drama is all the different ways social status is reinforced.
    One is through literacy. Sanniang comments that she only knows 100 characters, Zhao Pan er obviously couldn't read the characters on Gu Qianfan's gold bar. We know this because he told her explained to her whst was written on it she wanted it.
    She also could not read the names written into the clothing on The Night Revels. She noticed they were odd but didn't recognise what she was seeing.
    Zhao Pan'er also asks Ge Zhaodi if she can write. She can.
    She also asks her clients to read the note that was slipped in to her accounts book because she cannot read what is there..

    • @tonyc5384
      @tonyc5384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The note slipped into her account book was written in Liao, Zhao Pan'er replaced it with language of Western Xia. Even the guy who inserted the note can't tell the difference. Knowing a second language can save your life. 😁

    The exam system is impressive,.... who knows there were such advanced thinkers in an ancient civilization. Thank you for sharing this precious knowledge, it would take tons of hours Googling to look for something I am not quite sure what or how to look for. Very appreciative of your extra effort to introduce those background stories. It all makes sense.

    I am finally understanding where the current political hierarchy of China comes from. I watched a video explaining how it takes 30-40 years of experience within the political system before you can get to the levels of say, Xi Jinping, that is you must have had the experience of successfully leading, for example, a province with populations or GDP bigger than countries in the west. It's interesting how this system ensures only leaders with solid decades-long experience get to take positions in top levels.
    That said, I love these episodes from you. It gives your viewers an understanding of a culture that spans thousands of years and how it still very much influences the Chinese modern society. Keep going!

    Actually I'm really curious about how would people from different social class get married during this dynasty~ I've read about women from lower class families or jobs were not able to have a "main wife" title if they were to marry a upper class man, to which is similar to Zhao Pan Er and Gu Jian Fan's situation... It's honestly quite sad that the entire caste system made things so hard for people to achieve better lives...

    So so happy that you have finally found (after a long pause since Word of Honor) a drama series that you liked, appreciated and enthusiastic enough to make two special series to teach us a lot about the historical background and cultural education of the Song Dynasty. I am sure that a lot of your audiences (like me, being one of them) learned a lot in these two series.
    Thank you very much for spending so much of your time in doing all the researches and to make these two videos. Two thumbs UP for you!

    Thank you for the much information, AvenueX..this certainly will add up the watching experience (at least mine) 😊 still hoping you're gonna discuss about the building and waterways they use as sets in this awesome drama..imho, they describe how excellent of a person and how great his achievement was as a way to "create" conflict: what will Gu Qianfan choose; his high-rank career that he has fought almost all his life or his future with Pan'er..

    May I ask you why a famous (and really existed) prose writer and poet of that time Ouyang Xiu was portrayed in the drama in such an unfavorable light? The rest of the characters are fictional, aren't they? I tried to find out by myself but couldn't obtain any detractory info.

    The poem sounds really gallant. I like the sound of the 'riding horse' verse. The image when he just turns away and leaves coolly after some massive bloodsheds is also awesome. It's like an image from shonen animes like Rurouni Kenshin, but the feeling is much more brutally real.

I know a lot of the poisons and medicines are complete fiction, but actually there have been a lot of times where I Googled some of these plants and herbs and found out that they're actually used traditionally and have been studied and shown to work. So, I'd definitely watch that if you make it 😀

    Brigitte Lin is my favorite Chinese actress. Liu Yifei is beautiful just like my classmates in high school. The way she acts to captivate or seduce the audience, is how Lin captivated me. Except Lin has piercing eye look. Yang Mi also reminds me of Lin because of her boy characterization. Eternal Love, Fu Yao and Novoland. I wonder in todays, 4K and 8K technology how will Brigitte Lin compare to Liu Yifei and Yang Mi, and also during Lins time.

    I read that there were times that Tan Hua (aka sought flower, as in TGCF Hua Cheng's other title "Crimson Rain Sought Flower") #3 in ke Ju, must be good-looking. The title originally had nothing to do with the exam results but about selecting the two best-looking Jin Shi (palace test takers) to collect flowers to give to #1 guy. Don't know whether an emperor would deliberately give the best looking guy among the top three a lower score to drop his deserved rank from #1 or #2 to #3 just to fit the title.

    Recently, it seems to me that Chinese dramas are losing their dramatic intensity in terms of plots and acting. Directors and screenwriters need a revision of the main dramatic line. Emasculated from earthly passions, the heroes do not touch the strings of the viewer's soul. The strict formulation of characters within the framework of black and white does not meet the realities of the modern world. The viewer wants to see a kindred spirit in the characters, and not an unattainable ideal in the form of highly moral beauties and beauties. People need heroes who will show a mirror image of reality. But this should not be a repetition of the European or American theatrical line. Chinese history has its own guidelines for expressing the subtle nuances of people's emotional experiences from any era.

    Hi AvenueX, thanks for in-depth info on Song dynasty cultural background for this enjoyable drama. I wonder whether you can explain the proverb / saying by Zhao Pan'er replying to Gu Qian Fan which basically meant "if you don't betray me, I won't betray you." I believe this saying was also featured prominently by a unique character in Word of Honour i.e. by one of the 10 Ghosts from Ghost Valley.
    I believe the Chinese words sound like "Chuen pu fu wo, wo pu fu Chuen" or something like it. Can you please explain the origin of such direct and wonderful saying. Thanks.

    • @Blinky.Catttt
      @Blinky.Catttt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just an ancient, formal way of saying exactly what it translates to. There isn't any particular significance to this phrase, anyone can use it whenever they want to add some melodramatic formality into their writing or speech. Its prominence in WORD OF HONOR is purely as result of the plot (I assume, haven't watched it), no the phrase itself.
