His eyes are loaded yes! He's incredibly magnetic. And it's not just in this drama. The first drama I ever watched with him was Simmer Down, and he had those eyes there too. Maybe a tad less lustful though, as there's no kissing scenes in that drama.

I just love love LOVE how feminie this whole drama is! from the visual language to the plot and the characters 😭 I can not believe there's finally a historical drama out there that is about some women who are totally "like the other girls", do girly things and ARE strong at the same time. It's so frustrating to see female characters in every single historical drama being so shallow and obviously written from male fantasies like "she hates embroidery and dancing and cooking and every girly thing cause those suck and she is also not gentle and the only man in the world who sees her and loves her is MALE LEAD" lol
Also, It's a really feminist drama but not in a preachy and shove-it-into-your-face way where the characters are screaming about feminism and equality every 5 minutes * coughautumnballadcough *
If all this is true then I'm so interested in the drama
@@WaterKatara It's a pity that the screenwriter just borrowed a certain story created by Guan Hanqing and became the supporting actress in this play. The story that happened to the supporting actress is the real historical event (that is, the girl with the pipa)
And the feminist heroine in the main story line, and the male protagonist who can marry a prostitute... are all created by the screenwriter and do not conform to the real history of the story. Because in ancient China, female musicians were prostitutes. No matter whether the male protagonist was a noble or not, the female protagonist who was a prostitute was her disgrace.
This story is a hypothetical story that meets the needs of feminism, so it appeared like this. In real history, no male aristocrat would fall in love with a prostitute, and only aristocratic girls would be in the eyes of male aristocrats.

Yifei and Chen Xiao both have outstanding appearance. Their chemistry in their eyes are full of love. So many romantic kiss scenes also. Splendid.
For me, the best thing about this drama is that it’s more realistically done, with few of the silly conventions I see elsewhere. The comparison you drew between the Chinese dramatist and Shakespeare was not lost on the director. The heroine washing her hands after a shameful deed is straight out of Macbeth, whereas the scene where she goes out on the balcony and he gazes at her from the boat is a wonderful reminiscence of the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet. I wish the pipa playing were done better, really the actress could have put in some effort. There is also the difference in audio that really shouldn’t be there, this is really a lack in film craftsmanship. I mean, the film is visually gorgeous, has good actors, why neglect the music scenes?
Love the show and the Pipa scenes are the only things that bother me so much as well🤦🏻♀️ Chinese dramas always tend to not care about music playing AT ALL and it does NOT matter if the show is low budget garbage or a very high quality drama with actually proffessional and good production team, historical or modern or even freaking shows about MUSIC...it's kind of offensive to me as a musician tbh lol

Look, I understand that it’s frustrating, as a musician myself. But this time they were historically accurate. pipa is supposed to play in that dynasty.
If only the hand movement could match the music, this would be superb.
I'm not a musician, but I somehow notice she holds the pipa differently from other pipa players in the drama. And she holds it at different angles in different scenes. Is that normal for pipa? Some instruments, like violin, I think the musician has to hold the instrument at the right angle at all time regardless of the music he/she plays.
You know what’s funny? The actress actually had said in their group livestream thing that she had to go learn a bit from a pro to make the pipa playing more realistic 🥲I was so confused when I heard her say that because that was really bothering me too in this otherwise amazing drama!
I love the door closing scene! And I love the almost kiss that turned into hug that TURNED INTO NECK KISS 😭😭😭
I’m just happy that everyone feels unanimously good about something at last. That’s what the entertainment business should be, instead of making people divided and fandom-fight all the time…

Liu YuFei and Chen Xiao together is like a huge strand of fire crackers lit during Chinese New Year, whoever cast them together really deserves an award for "Epic Casting"!. You get an eye-gasm while watching this drama of the beautiful and the handsome. And Chen Xiao, the expression in his eyes deserves an award...even from far, one can "see" the passion for his woman in every glance and every stare! 🤩

YES SAME!!!!! Haha I started watching this drama cuz of Liu YiFei and Chen Xiao, even though I don't usually watch Chinese dramas. Promised myself to finish watching, even if it's crap. But I didn't need to! Their chemistry blows my mind, and I was literally screaming (silently) at 3am last night, KISS ALREADY ASDFSJK (ofc no spoilers 😉) gonna re-watch it until next episode comes out 😭😭😭
I'm especially happy with how they displayed the desires well as they're all adult..finally avenuex has a drama that brings her to hop and being so happy..I'm just waiting for this to end so I can start watching..
I have pointed with Chen Xiao's eyes and smiles eversince I watched The Romance of Condor Heroes,, There's no doubt about his acting skill,, he can be seen to be cruel, annoying, fool, cool, gentle, sweet and cute,, so adorable person he is,, for sure
I just watched the episode where he ducks his head and smiles and he's so freaking adorable when he does it's. You can tell he's smitten. It's epi 13 between min 15-17
THE moment I start watching this drama, I felt cuptivated, Its not a silly drama, the characters have depth,you can feel imiadently the strong chemisty between the actors , at last something intresting to watch!!!!!!!

I stumbled upon this drama by accident and I love it so much I paid for Tencent subscription 😭😭😭 Their chemistry is no joke and even scenes without them together are still interesting. I think the leads definitely show that they’re mature actors. I hope there’s more dramas with strong leads like this in the future.

At first, I watched it for liu yifei. And I almost stopped around ep 2 and 3 cuz of plot holes but I continued and it got better. The cp is really good. They made me squeal with joy. The eps where pang er and her ex confront are boring. When ml returned, I was screaming with joy. I really like side characters in this a lot.
yep agreed. there are still minor plot holes which sometimes make me question but overall its very enjoyable to watch

Hate the ex I am all the way up to the end now. I skipped all his parts. And skipped to when Chen Xiao came back. And the side characters are so great. I love Sanniang character and Gu Qianfan's guard the most.

The chemistry in General’s lady i still love from a matured sense and of cos “Untamed” still remains my number 1 Chinese drama
untamed is my number one, and then Word of Honor... and Legend of the Phoenix, and Nirvana of Fire (II, expecially), and Love and Redemption... what a beautiful bunches of stories and tragedy... and passion and struggle there is in Chinese dramaland... (even so many productions are only worth to be discarted at once)...

Im truly enjoying it finally feels like after a long time. After so many poorly done productions. It feels nice!!!! It’s not all perfect but what matters is that it feels real, authentic, the chemistry feels so unique, it feels refreshing because this drama has something I missed after so longs. After Longxi it feels nice for once

I'm SO obsessed with this drama. I can't say how much i'm loving this, but it is fasting becoming my favorite of all times. The songs are beautiful (I'm in love with the OST), their chemistry is amazing, the lead characters are so mature and real, even with their faults, they know how to deal with it, like when Gu addressed Zhao's insecurity and they ACTUALLY spoke of it and compromised, the costumes are great and the sets are REAL no some CGI, I can see the effort to do all of it and it really amazes me. I love to watch your review, couldn't stop giggling and squealing like a teenager during it lol
After I decided to rewatch it, I came back a year after and I need to say: I still didn’t find a greater drama than this. It became my favorite of all time (including other nationalities dramas)
I love her acting. She makes these slight facial expressions that speaks the whole scene and he knows how to pick up from it too. They are wonderful actors

Here you have show us your best, witty and generous intelligence and eloquence and emotional way to express opinions and knowledge. I am so happy to be guided by you, and to have the honour to listen to your witty, cunning, cultivated reviews. I will watch this drama, for sure (once I have finished the drama I am watching now... a -very- old one...). But... there are others, for sure, very handsome and good, really good actors, in my opinion, which could/should be engaged more in "good" drama (costume drama or whatever) as they are by now. One of them is the very talented and not-so recognized, beautiful/beautiful Xu Zheng Xi. You have never (if I am not wrong) spent a word about that very very very good costume drama called The legend of the Phoenix... there, Xu ZhengXi was masterly committed and playing "legendary"... (only one example)... he is also such a good interpreter of "comic" situations... but, even if he is such an handsome and serious actor... he is not born under a lucky star, I suppose....

So fun to see Avenue X so thrilled about this drama! I've also watched up to episode 14, I like that the characters are regular people and not like Crown Prince or top swordsman of jiang hu. I got bored by episode 3 of Who Rules the World for example. And the sparring and debates between the two leads is quite well written I was very amused by their conversations on the ship. Slow build romance done right. Reminded me a bit of Jane Austen, how the leads weren't impressed with each other at first and then slowly got more intrigued and impressed by the other person's strength of character. Very nice.

Agree with all the negatives and positives of this! For a period idol drama, this is what I look for. I got giddy just listening to you being so excited because someone feels the same way as I do when it comes to the opinions on a show - at least first impression-wise. Chen Xiao made me swoon for him once again with that scene of him trying to hide his smile behind that pole! I love the character setup and dynamics of the drama. The way that Liu Yi Fei and Chen Xiao come together feels so natural without a hint of forced sugar made it a lot easier to CRAVE the romance to happen and root for it when it does. I can't wait for more but at the same, I'm so worried I'll be disappointed as we go.
Liu Yifei improves a lot from her younger drama days (it's been 16 years afterall). I watched some of her movies, but never felt special or related to her acting. Like you said, in other dramas she was like a super pretty non-reactive, and that made her character somewhat stick out like a needle left on the cloth. I'm not saying she doesn't act, it's just her acting doesn't resonate with her costar's, and hence doesn't have strong impact on viewers.
But she does well in this drama. I think the chemistry w/ Chen Xiao helps in making her character blend in the narrative, makes it alive and relatable.
I last watched CX in a drama with Angela Baby. I think I have to go dig up some of his later works. He matures well.
