i also am drawn to the color and script on the binding of a book... I am 70 now, but when I was 12 years old, my mother took me to a thrift shop and gave me a dollar to spend.. The store had books for 10 cents each.. I bought a set of 10 that each had 3 stories in each book. When I got home and my dad saw them and said " that is the best dollar you will ever spend in your lifetime...... he is gone now but to this day I love books

I found some pressed Lilly’s of the Valley in an old book titled Gems of Life and dated 1880. I loved the green color of the book, never expecting to find anything inside. The flowers are very old, and I’ve put them in a frame to preserve them. Whenever I walk past the flowers in the frame, it always makes me smile. ❤️

When I first moved to California, we went to Knott's Berry Farm and I went into the bookstore there and bought my first copy of Gone With the Wind. I couldn't wait to read it, so I had my nose in the book, looking down, when my mom and I stepped out onto the wooden boardwalk outside the bookstore. I took another step and fell flat on my face in the dirt right in front of this man, who promptly said to my 18 yr old self, "Well, I've had women fall for me before but this is ridiculous!" LOL.

My first old books were given to me when I was about 6 years old by my grandfather. They were from England, and he told me they were very special. He was so much of an Anglophile, he married a woman from “across the pond” and adopted her three sons who came over to the US with her, one of whom is my dad. Despite that my then 4-year-old little sister scribbled all over the books with crayons, I have cherished them and kept them now for over 40 years. Since those first musty-smelling, tattered-edge treasures, I have added to my collection steadily over the years. I feel the same way about them that you do - it’s more the beauty of the patina and the glimpse of the past that makes my heart yearn for these items, not necessarily their monetary value. Thank you so much for sharing this video! You spoke to my heart today! ❤️
I love books. I couldn't hardly read in grade school. When the teacher would call on me to read it was very embarrassing because I stumbled over almost every word. I was determined though that I was goin to become a better reader so I went to the Library and checked out books like Sweet Valley High. I found that I loved them. I couldn't put it down and that yr in school my reading level drastically improved. When I'd get cabin fever I could go anywhere through a book. Thankyou for sharing. I love the smell of old books too. 💕

We love old books! I collect pre Vatican ll missals, mostly 1910 20's 30's. My great Uncle Matthew, who was born blind but was able to have surgery and see collected books and read everyday of his life till the end. We counted over 1500 in his collection. Some quite old. I love the names even addresses and little notes we find in very old turn of the century or before books.
When my family asked me what I’d like to do for Mother’s Day I told them I wanted to go to an antique store and guess what I walked out of there with?! My first stash of old books to start an old book collection and now to see this beautiful video all about old books makes my heart happy.
I joined old world society last night. I’m 65 and have done interior design for many years. I’ve been attracted to this look long before I even knew what to call it. A trick I learned about getting the smell out of old books: I once bought a wonderful old book on eBay, which when it arrived reeked so bad of moth balls I couldn't even handle the book. I had to do something before I could read it! I found this tip for getting the smell out of old books in a book of advice about caring for old books. The tip requires using a large plastic tub with a lid or other large air tight container. Place the book inside the plastic tub, one which is large enough to stand the book upright and fan the pages open. Inside the tub, near the book, place a "solid room air freshener," something like those citrus or lavender or linen fragrance ones you can get in the laundry, bathroom, or cleaning supplies areas of grocery stores. Put the lid on the plastic tub so it's air tight and leave it closed up for at least 3 weeks. Then check to see if the smell of the book is better. If not close the lid back up for a few weeks more. This worked wonderfully for my old book in just 3 weeks. I was actually surprised how well it worked. The moth ball smell was completely removed, and the only smell now years later if a very faint floral smell from the air freshener I used. I've also used this tip to get musty odors out of old fabrics too. ...I love my collection of antique books. They're not especially valuable, but I love them. Back in the 1980s I found a book for sale for 10 cents at a garage sale. Actually I bought several books that day. One of them was just a monthly book club book, but inside was a genuine inscription from the actress Joan Crawford. The garage sale person said the books had belonged to her then deceased aunt who had formerly lived in New York in the 1950s, and who told them stories of the famous people she used to meet there. New York is a long way from my little town in Texas, but the book is still in my possession. Often, I love books more for the stories about them than for the stories written inside them.
Yes to all those reasons! We have my husbands great great grandfathers secretary and it is full of old books. When we had to move my grandma to a nursing home and were cleaning out her house, I snagged quite a few of her old family books, my favorites being a first edition Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, and a schoolbook of my great grandfathers with a rather unflattering pencil sketch of a teacher he didn't like.
Such a lovely Saturday morning video. ♡ I love having old books all over my house. I love to stack them, prop them, and even put them in an actual bookcase from time to time. Haha! My favorite vintage book I own was actually a gift. A beautiful, deep royal blue with a spine title you can read across the room: "Dahlias for every garden." Secondly, the Bible we inherited from my husband's great grandfather is pretty special. 📚 ♡

I have been collecting old books for 45 years, they are treasures of art and literature and binding....I have a very old copy of Pilgrims Progress that has some old newspaper inside the spine, which is fascinating.
I'm with you, old books are so special, there's something about them that gets me too. Love your style, BTW! Mine is more vintage boho but heavy on history.

Nothing speaks to me like old books. I’ve collected them since I was in my twenties. Love antique children’s books especially as I used to teach kindergarten and first grade. The smell of an old book store is my favorite perfume. I love gold edges and torn pages...love old journals and sweet autograph books with flowers and poetry. Loved your video!😘😘😘

Old books has to be one of my favorites to collect and style with. For me it's the gorgeous, rich colors and the things written in them. I own books with people's names and messages that date back to the early 1800s. I love imagining the story behind the book...who held it, why did they buy it or was it a gift. And like you said, why did they ever part with it. Just brilliant. Side note-loving some of the new design/decor. Cannot wait for an updated tour. 💋

That was lovely. I too like old books. When I was younger I used to buy children’s old books. My favourite shop was lost in the earthquakes 10 years ago. It was a wonderful old brick building three stories high and packed to the brim with old books. Even stacked on the stairs. Nowadays due to age I read a lot but always buy second hand books online. I love the inscriptions. What a treasure you had finding that little bible with all the little cards inside. Your house looked wonderful. I think a house without piles of books is not a home, just an empty shell. 🥰
Some of our treasured old books are discarded library books. Our daughter recently exclaimed that, "libraries should just keep growing and NEVER throw away old ones!".
We have a library in our home of old and new books. My hubby is a huge reader. I, however, am not. I do have two old books that are of poetry. I got those many years ago as a teen and they are displayed on a shelf that my late father built. My father passed a few days before Christmas of 2020 from a heart attack. It was completely unexpected. He built the shelf for my mom and she gave it to me. So special and those books are just beautiful on one of the shelves. I absolutely love listening to Homemaker Chic while working around the house or farm. ❤️

Love this🌺 yes I love old books. I love the history and the treasure of history behind it. Being on a tight budget for years little old books would bring such a gift. Back yard auctions in my small town in Indiana..a stop at an antique shop and finding a book marked to my price..the colors like you.. the pictures..and on occasion a written letter tucked away. After a few moves I have had to let some go for room and let others enjoy but I still use in decor and have a bin full of some that were hard to part with. A poet by the Name of James Whitcomb Riley became a special book to find when I found out my grandfather used to take him around in a buggy . 🌺 thank you for the reminder today 🌺
This might be my favorite of your videos yet. You pull this off so well. It is a joy to see! I decorate with old books too (for all the same reasons)! There is one old book that is particularly special to me: since we studied Latin in our homeschool, I thought it would be nice to own a Latin Bible. I opted to visit our local used Christian bookstore. In the foreign language section, there was a small, old, worn, navy Latin New Testament. I was thrilled! But when I opened it to the inside cover, my heart skipped a beat. Mostly hidden by the pricing/condition sticker, were the upper strokes of the original owner's signature...and I RECOGNIZED them. Carefully peeling back that label, I found the signature of my great-grandfather! I knew it so well because my father had some of his hand-written sermons in our family archives. There I was, bawling in the bookstore, turning to anyone who would listen and saying, "This book was my great-grandfather's! And I just happened upon it here!" It had been part of his theological library from his years as a preacher. Now, one hundred years later, it has pride of place in his great-granddaughter's home, reminding me and my children of our heritage of faith.
I love and practice your ideas about displaying wonderful books all over the home. Have done it for years and enjoy the times when a friend or relative reaches up for one to read or look at. Such treasures in this computerized world , to have and to hold ... even a musty book is beloved🥰🦉🐾
Beautiful collection Angela. There’s just something about an old book. I have my fathers old pocket prayer book that he carried with him when he was a young man in the army (stationed in Korea). It’s quite old and I treasure it. It has prayer cards with the different saints throughout the book, that my Italian grandma used to send him. ❤️☺️

I was just gifted two books from my grandmother. One was from her childhood and has her name scribbled in the inside cover. The other is a wedding plan book from the 1940s!

A friend bought an old baking cookbook that had notes by just about every recipes...best ever because..I'll never make this again...that sort of note, along with some changes they may have made. After seeing that book, I too started making notes along side the recipe, who knows 100 yrs from now someone who loves old cookbooks may find joy in seeing those notes. Thanks for sharing.

I love this so much! I even recognize a series of small books because the same set is in my mother’s house. My mother passed away March 25th of this year. Her house was home for so many books that span across several generations on both sides of my family. Even books that I enjoyed as a child. There’s no way that my brother and I can house all of them so it’s so hard to go through and decide what to keep. You gave me an idea; maybe we can donate to antique shops so that people like yourself can enjoy them.
Hi Angela! I adore old books as well! I use stacks to raise the height of my lamps in my livingroom. Very old copies of magic gardens and children's book of nature are part of my mantel vinyette with ferns and spring things. I also have my grandfsthers 1883 copy of Riley love lyrics. I have enjoyed collecting old books for most of my life. They do hold the many meanings and purposes you describe, Angela. They fascinate me as artefacts of our lives.
I love Antique books so much I use them to add height to my table lamps and it looks lovely. The colors the feel of the pages and the smell make me so happy. Two of many finds were in the Galena Illinois Antique book store. The first is called Decorum, Treatise On Etiquette And Dress. I found this info so interesting. The second is The Woman Gardner by Frances Perry. Lovely smooth pages along with valuable plant information. Plus the added bonus of colors. There is an author whose books I love that brings you back to the times that were simple. Gladys Tabor is her name and her books a heavenly. Please read them!

What a lovely post! I am lucky to still have my First Communion prayer book and I inherited my great aunt's prayer book as well. I love to find little pieces of the past hidden in the pages of the old books I buy at flea markets or yard sales. It tells you so much about the person who owned them first. Great video, thank you!
I have several antique books but only because they were owned by my great grandmother [a massive linen-bound cookbook from the 1800s], the gift of a red leatherbound gold leaf complete works of Shakespeare - a gift from my grandfather to my grandmother as a wedding gift that she wanted circa June 1926, along with books from my parents' youth and my own. I donated most of my university texts but kept a few math and science courses to date because I have used them as supplementary sources from which I have taught since 1968, but professionally since 1973. The sentimental books are not for reading as they would disintegrate if opened, and my contemporary favorites stink from mold and the absorbed odors from the chem lab, but I keep them because they "spark joy" or at least the memories attached. The only "decorating" with books are that they are within arm's reach -- when tutoring again once things open safely after pandemic.

Several years ago I found a book ca. 1860's. It was leather bound, very fragile due to its age. The subject matter was an all-inclusive school book. It had mathematics, grammar, history etc. I couldn't display it very often because light was obviously ruining what was left of the old-faded and extremely dry, crumbling leather cover. Amazingly the pages within were in quite good condition. When we moved, knowing I wouldn't have a place for it, I decided to donate it to a thrift store for others to enjoy.

There's nothing like holding a book, snuggling up & turning the pages as you sink deeper into the world between the book covers... I appreciate a home that has 📚 books far more than any minimalist interior. Their presence... especially in the home... speaks volumes about the individuals they surround 📚 🤗💙... In my opinion 😘
