I am a retired grandmother now, but I remember my grandmother in the 1960's who only had an 8th grade education could recite poetry that I was learning in high school. Her ability to understand "numbers" was phenomenal. Her knowledge of the bible when I would read to her was incredible. She would say open the bible to any page and I would start reading and she would start reciting. i too love old books but I don't have any as old as your readers. What a wonderful collection to pass on. And if we have taught our children the value of old things, they will cherish those things when you are gone. Peace and blessings.
Hi Heidi, What a wonderful video!! I wished we lived near you!! I homeschooled my son up to 8th grade and then he went to school outside the home for high school. (Our son is in college now.) He is our only child - born in my early 40s. I married a bit later than most and then was blessed to get pregnant a few weeks after our wedding!! In any event, I agree with you about the old school books (and old books in general). When my son went to high school he had a wonderful vocabulary as well as a great knowledge of history. His teachers were so impressed and they asked him where he went to grammar school. He said he was homeschooled and they said...”your mom did a great job!” I was happy to hear that but I can’t take all the credit because it was all the old school books that I had!! You are right....the vocabulary is SO rich and they also help children to learn about life at other times in our history as well as the world’s history. And how wonderful are the Aesop Fables!! What great life lessons they teach. Do children even read them anymore??? God willing, I look forward to sharing all these wonderful books and stories with my grandchildren someday. I am guessing most young people have never heard of Aesop's Fables but I loved them as a kid myself. I had forgotten to mention old cookbooks. I have a couple of them, I still do not use them much but if I need a cook book at all, they are the only ones I will turn to :D

Seems to me many of us who have home schooled have a love of book collecting, expecially old ones...your not alone. I have very old ones also 1857, 1873, it's sad to say that someday books will no longer will be printed. Total treasures before we were dumb downed, outstanding resources. Thanks for sharing!
I have been collecting these types of books for my kids and we read them every day in our homeschool. My favorite are the Harpers readers because they give you information about each passage and author which then I look up and try to find the books of the passages I really like. It is great to see someone else who appreciates these things like I do because in the suburbs I feel kind of like an island 😊
Found a vintage book that I'm guessing is for toddlers called "Farm Animals". It was my first experience reading a vintage children's book as an adult, and I was so impressed with how it accurately described what the animals did and did not dumb it down. I also loved the illustrations and had to get it. Also, so interesting to consider the KJV is scored at a 5th grade reading level, yet so many complain about it being too difficult to read.

So tickled to know I am NOT the ONLY who LOVES these older books!!! When I see them, I too like grab them! It breaks my heart when see "craft" people destroy such history and VALUABLE information all in name of "upcycling"! They have NO IDEA, what they are destroying! It would be one thing if they photocopied it, but they don't. :( I have found a couple of Tennyson poem books. I would love to get some of the old Dick and Jane books. Oh I know,,, that is one of the biggest things that makes so heart breaking! I just wanna cry when I see an old book destroyed for some 'craft'! Books are becoming a thing of the past!
I love these vintage school books. My husband and I were listening to you read the poem and discussing how the modern schools have dumbed down the curriculum for students. Thank you for reminding us how wonderful these old readers are.
I also collect vintage and antique books! Our living room is mostly decorated with them.I love the 1800's Pilgrim's Progress book I have! Thanks for bringing out the wonderful treasures of vintage books!
Loved this video. I too love old books, whether it’s the original or a new printing of an old book. I have my dad’s school readers from the 1920s and I used them along with new copies of the Dick and Jane books and Pathway readers (written by the Amish) for teaching my daughter to read. Another series if you just like reading old books are the Lamplighter books. They are reprints of wonderful old stories from the 1800s and earlier. I find when I read old books, I usually have to keep a dictionary with me to look up old words that we don’t use any more. Reading old books is like opening up a whole other world and takes me back to a kinder gentler day, although I must admit, sometimes it was a rougher crueler world depending on what you are reading.
Nice! I forgot to mention in this one that I also love old cook books - back before they started writing them with "a can of this and a box of that". I have one from 1950 that I got for a quarter.
I found my treasure from a "Friends of the Library" sale. Everything is 50 cents a pound or less. I have no interest in reading on a Kindle. I love the feel of a book in my hands. And old books feel like they have more of a story than the story they print, if that makes sense.

In the fifties a man came to our home selling Collier encyclopedias. Mom and Dad purchased a set and with it came a collection of about 24 books which included the same Huckleberry Finn book you held up. Read them over and over. Thank you for sharing.
Yep! Just in my 27 years of teaching dance, I can tell stories about the huge change in children and their ability to learn basic techniques over the years became worse and worse.

I also collect antique and vintage books. And for the same reasons. We don't have children, but I love children's literature so I have a lot of it. You are correct about the better material for children in the early 20th century. It doesn't begin to compare to the pap that is put out today. I have my grandmother's history book that she used to teach kids in a one-room schoolhouse back in the 30's. The material is much more sophisticated than now. I also love Grace Livingston Hill and have managed to collect most all her books which i reread often when I need an escape from today's culture. Thanks for sharing this video!
My old book collection is cookbooks dating back to before the civil war. Genealogy is more than names and dates. Old cookbooks were not like today’s cookbooks. They were about keeping a home, home medicine, child care, etc. These old books allow me to look into the life and times of my ancestors.

I have a Searchlight recipe book, the earliest copyright 1931 by Arthur Capper I have the 1943 edition. Everything from simple recipes to gourmet and recipes Awesome book that YOU should have if you can find one. I watch a lot of your vids on the herbal tinctures, etc. I've been making those for years and my mother did all the preserving fruit, pickles and such.
I collect old books too and Used to read Grace Livingston Hill too. All i read anymore is educational books. I have some old gospel books my grandfather had as a Baptist preacher that are very old. But my best treasure is a school book my dad had when he was in 3rd grade in 1931. I could go on forever - It is a passion!!!
I found a copy of Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan at my local used bookstore a few months ago. There is a lovely inscription inside written by a Mother to her children in the year of 1883. I appreciate the eloquent writings of the days of yore as well and the beautiful penmanship. Thank you so much for the poem reading!! God bless!! :D
Enjoyed your video. I love books too. I have been purchasing the good classics which are mostly vintage for my grand children for many years, building libraries for them. We were able to send them to a Christian school for elementary years. It became too costly and so e spent a few years homeschooling. We spent many evenings reading together out loud rather than watching tv. They loved it.
I just picked up a physician desk reference to medicine for people over 50 written in 1969. 90% of it is still applicable to my life. Paid $0.99 for an $80.00 book 📚 at the Salvation Army Store!!!
Two 8 ft. Bookcases here dedicated to both old classics and a few new. Love them all! Have you seen the Old Mother Westwinds series by Thornton Burgess? My daughter loved them. Bought them when a school was selling their old books.

We have something in common, I too love old books! And your right, kids today are being dumbed down! My oldest is a late 1800 cookbook. Some of the ingredients I can't figure out what they are. But I feel the spirit of the original owner of it. It is something to think about when holding a book that someone held so long ago! Blessings!

I wasn't ready for you to stop reading. LOL So lovely! We have my father in law's first grade reader. He was born in 1929. The book was published in 1932. Also, my grandmother, born in 1887 was a school teacher. She knew we were being dumbed down. She told my mother as such when I was in grade school. She died when I was 9. We have a bunch of old books. The Lake English Classics- Shakespere's The Merchant of Venice Copyright 1900. Several others of his. A collection of his Comedies. We only have two volumes though. Book one and two published in 1944. We have another of his fathers high school books...Dickens The Tale of Two Cities published in 1911. There are too many to mention. One interesting one is The Life of Paul by Benjamin Willard Robinson, Ph.D. copyright 1918 - Fourteenth Impression 1949. Some neither of us can remember which parents they came from. I wish I had old reference books or history books. The "stories" are a changing as you know. Most any book is a treasure. How did we get away from allowing it to be taken from our hands? I love books Heidi. I have schoolbooks of relatives from 1880’s ( I think) that still have work papers in them. I have my Great Grandmother’s home medical book published around 1900. My prized possession is my Great great Grandfather’s obituary which he wrote. It tells his life story from running away from home at 12 to be a cabin boy to his time as Captain of a blockade runner during the civil war. I have several shelves of one of my 5 bookcases filled with older books.lol It sounds like you have some nice books also.
Heidi, When I homeschooled almost 20 years ago I started with a curriculum called Rod and Staff, they are faith based and their readers all included God and creation and the Word of God. I LOVED them. Might be something you are interested in looking into.
I have heard of them, maybe I will check it out. Mostly looking for second hand things right now as I still have most of the school books I used for my two boys :)
I didn’t want you to stop reading. It was a beautiful poem. It even spoke about “covering the land” after plowing as so many nowadays are just understanding! How much better off would we all really be had we not fallen into the trap of “new is better?” It’s heartbreaking really. So much has been lost. I’m so grateful we have folks like you trying to remind us that in a lot ways, the old ways were truly better! Just look at gardening as an example...how much better off would we all be if someone hadn’t gotten too lazy to figure out natural pest/weed management and instead invented RoundUp????? So much we now have to try to fix because of that one disastrous invention. How many teen pregnancies could have been avoided had we not taken God out of our schools? Let alone how some of our churches have been “dumb downed.” Turned into “follow the preacher” instead of “follow God!” I’m ranting. Sorry. TFS Truly enjoyed this. I used to have 2 Danish book of agriculture.(print in 1800's..). how to book...(found in garbage.)... many moves since then.. and not sure where they are now..but they had loads of information .. and I couldn't even read them.. now I could translate with the help of the computer....but the illustrations were superb
Awe! Heidi, I love old books as well. I have some old history books as well from the 1800's and I gave them to my grandson. I collect old Bibles, Dictionaries,medical, English. My Noah Websters dictionary is from 1852, 1875 1924, i have many more as well. Medical book is from 1886 Hymnals 1908, 1888, 1939 It is wonderful that you like old books like me. WOW...That's what I call a poem! FANTASTIC !! I was comfortably sitting with my eyes closed, listening to you read, when SUDDENLY..NOTHING. The batteries died on my phone. Ugh !! HA! HA! I was so comfortable too. 🌞 I'd love to stencil some of the poems sentences across a country coffee table, using milk paints to give it an antique chippy look. It's an absolute shame that our school systems are slyly forcing our children to adhere to their "dumbing down programs!" SMH Anyways....I really enjoyed this video a lot! THANKYOU 🌼
It really is a shame. I believe most college grads would find this poem hard to read, I admit, I stumbled a few times and I think I only read a quarter of it and to imagine, FOURTH graders were reading this at one time! Glad you enjoyed it! :D
I too am a lover of books I have hundreds of old cookbooks and have been collecting classics too also homesteading type books for many years no one ever was interested in them and they were easy to find now it is a little harder
I wonder if they are harder to find because more people are grabbing them up with the resurgence of wanting to learn traditional ways or if they are getting tossed - I sure hope it is the former and not the latter!
I so agree and was warmed by this and felt endorphins forming in my brain ad you read "The Sower"! RCOS (radical change of subject) I've been wanting to ask this, Heidi: would you show us your design of a modest swimsuit? I even think wrist-length sleeves and ankle-length "pants" would be good and protect the skin from sunburns and from having to use sunscreen. Also it’s great to read a old book that tells a fantasy story that in our days are now true! Ie... Jules vernes 20,000 leagues under the sea! We do something you would be interested in. The local historical society owns a schoolhouse built in 1852. Each summer my husband and I get to open the school house and show kids what school was like back then. We do a 3-day session and repeat it 4 times. This summer we are teaching kids a little bit about the writers of the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution. I think we will have to read a bit of Song of the Sower to our kids. My husband is a woodworker and will cut parts for the kids to assemble a wood project. This summer it will be a "writing desk" similar to what Thomas Jefferson would have used. This is not really a desk but a box, perhaps 2 inches tall and 10 x 12 inches across, and hinged for storage of paper and quill. We have a friend who raises birds. She will give us feathers which we will make into quills for the kids.

oh how i miss reading, just not the same when one has to listen to a book,,i still buy old/vintage books when i have help to do so,, not very many people take the time to take me to sales any more,,mom used to do that but she passed in feb. so i,m alone now,, thank you for the great videos,,real pleasant to listen to like im right in the same room thank you again
I had never thought of removing the smell but I tend to love that musty smell of old books, haha :D Seems to me that pulling them out on a nice day and leaving them open in the sun may help though.
Outside on a dry morning. Ruffle through pages every so often to get air in them. Not too much sun; these old books are somewhat fragile, and the colors will fade and bindings deteriorate more . Best done under a tree, or under a covered patio.
Flyover Pilgrim, yes I have done that, but as you said was afraid to leave them exposed to the sun for long. One thing I have done is tear small pieces of fabric softener sheets off & placed them between the pages.
Another great author is G. A. Henty, they've been republished many times over the years. Think he died 1902, the old series of books are treasured & now republished again
My favorite books: author Harry Combs (that is his name, he's gone now) series: Brules, The Scout and the last in this series The Legend of the Painted Horse. Maybe Mr Rain would love to read this series. I collect Arthur Rackham.
Great video! 2 recommendations...although not really childrens books...first...white goats and black bees by donald grant original date 1911 and the 2nd i just finished and heidi i think you would truly love it is titled a very small farm by william winchester. Hands down best book i have read this year.
I LOVE Grace's books. I think I have 15+ old paperbacks (1965-1975) around the house someplace. Besides romance it's a shows a part of human history. I use to have a Encyclopedia set from the late 1800's. I had to move around a lot in 5 years and got rid of it. I've been sorry I did that for the last 30 years. it was a combination of facts and folklore.

I love old books too, but I just pitched an older children's bible. It was mine when I was young. Just recently went to read some from it to my granddaughter and found it was way watered down and not true to what I understand now. So yeah more power to king James or my German Elberfelder. I wonder how many kids had to memorize that poem in 4th grade 😉 those were the days!!!!
How do I convince my husband that keeping our six-year-old home for school starting in the fall (first-grade) is a great idea to do now and not wait until 5th grade??? Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated thank you I do work from home full-time.
This can be tough depending on how hard a stance on public school your husband is taking. I would recommend showing him statistics of all kinds. Most of the time when it is the husband who is having a hard time with it, it is because they are afraid their kids will turn out "weird". But what I see is kids who public school end up being just another cookie cutter person who is just like everyone else - now THAT is what is weird when we are all designed to be different. Also keep in mind how much safer kids are in their own homes than in the public school let alone the fact the education is far superior than what they can receive in the modern school system. I taught Ballet for 27 years straight in this same town and watched how with each year it seemed that kids became dumber in the sense they had less and less natural creativity and the ability to understand basic movements was severely diminished. What I once was able to teach to kids ages 6-8 eventually was too hard for many kids in the 9-12 age bracket. I was shocked the day when it hit me that kids age 6-8 could not even understand the difference between between moving forward and moving backwards. I could not believe I had to start breaking this very concept down when at one time I did not even need to do this for the 3-5 year olds!
I had one of the original (very very old) children's books, "Black Beauty". Unfortunately, our trailer burned down in 2002 and it was lost. What a shame.
I have some other vintage books in a shed that I had planned to sell soon at a sale. I will go through them and see what you might be interested in. If you are, then I would be willing to give them to you for free, if you can pay the postage--I have no money right now.

Does anyone know how to get a mildew smell out of old books? That would be the one main reason I won't buy a old book.Other than that I lie buying them. :)
There's numerous ways, here's my baking soda method. I sprinkle BakingSoda on the bottom of a plastic bag then stand the hard or soft cover book (on another BS free plastic piece) so pages are open and tie it shut, letting it sit for a day or more. Gel packs work also but I find them not as effective. They get an alternative treatment when I sit outside in the sun & read:)
I collect the old readers also. We homeschooled and I used some of them for homeschooling. The old books definitely have a better vocabulary and a cleaner moral them.
Rain Country it is kinda depressing how education "progressed". 20 year olds then sounded like philosophical scholars, now they need warnings not to eat packets of soap
Word meanings is something you always have to be careful with when looking in history. The word fagots is used often in middle ages, refering to a bundle of sticks. Shows how many trivial things we care about that will have no meaning years later.
Because after years of looking into it, the King James is clearly the most accurate and unadulterated version of the Bible. It is not that hard to understand when people take time to just read and get used to the literal and accurate language. The modern versions are not only dumbed down but side by side comparisons prove that there are many verses that have been removed and many that have literally been changed so much to make the meaning of them opposite of what they originally were. I believe this is the reason there is so much confusion over what the Bible really says. Since switching to KJV only, the word of God has become far more clear to me than every before. Yes, I still stumble over some of the language but when one reads it in context or simply looks up the old English words we no longer use, the meaning becomes clear. This in turn means being able to understand not just more of what the Bible says but also being able to better read and understand other older books written in a similar and more advanced language than what is common to today's English

It breaks my heart when see "craft" people destroy such history and VALUABLE information all in name of "upcycling"! They have NO IDEA, what they are destroying! It would be one thing if they photocopied it, but they don't. :( I have found a couple of Tennyson poem books. I would love to get some of the old Dick and Jane books. I wish I around where I could collect up some of these myself. Bless you Heidi for rescuing and saving these gems!

Loved this video. I too love old books, whether it’s the original or a new printing of an old book. I have my dad’s school readers from the 1920s and I used them along with new copies of the Dick and Jane books and Pathway readers (written by the Amish) for teaching my daughter to read. Another series if you just like reading old books are the Lamplighter books. They are reprints of wonderful old stories from the 1800s and earlier. I find when I read old books, I usually have to keep a dictionary with me to look up old words that we don’t use any more. Reading old books is like opening up a whole other world and takes me back to a kinder gentler day, although I must admit, sometimes it was a rougher crueler world depending on what you are reading.

Nice! I forgot to mention in this one that I also love old cook books - back before they started writing them with "a can of this and a box of that". I have one from 1950 that I got for a quarter.
I found my treasure from a "Friends of the Library" sale. Everything is 50 cents a pound or less. I have no interest in reading on a Kindle. I love the feel of a book in my hands. And old books feel like they have more of a story than the story they print, if that makes sense.

In the fifties a man came to our home selling Collier encyclopedias. Mom and Dad purchased a set and with it came a collection of about 24 books which included the same Huckleberry Finn book you held up. Read them over and over. Thank you for sharing.

Yep! Just in my 27 years of teaching dance, I can tell stories about the huge change in children and their ability to learn basic techniques over the years became worse and worse.

I also collect antique and vintage books. And for the same reasons. We don't have children, but I love children's literature so I have a lot of it. You are correct about the better material for children in the early 20th century. It doesn't begin to compare to the pap that is put out today. I have my grandmother's history book that she used to teach kids in a one-room schoolhouse back in the 30's. The material is much more sophisticated than now.
I also love Grace Livingston Hill and have managed to collect most all her books which i reread often when I need an escape from today's culture. Thanks for sharing this video!

My old book collection is cookbooks dating back to before the civil war. Genealogy is more than names and dates. Old cookbooks were not like today’s cookbooks. They were about keeping a home, home medicine, child care, etc. These old books allow me to look into the life and times of my ancestors.

I have a Searchlight recipe book, the earliest copyright 1931 by Arthur Capper I have the 1943 edition. Everything from simple recipes to gourmet and recipes Awesome book that YOU should have if you can find one. I watch a lot of your vids on the herbal tinctures, etc. I've been making those for years and my mother did all the preserving fruit, pickles and such.

I collect old books too and Used to read Grace Livingston Hill too. All i read anymore is educational books. I have some old gospel books my grandfather had as a Baptist preacher that are very old. But my best treasure is a school book my dad had when he was in 3rd grade in 1931. I could go on forever - It is a passion!!!

I found a copy of Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan at my local used bookstore a few months ago. There is a lovely inscription inside written by a Mother to her children in the year of 1883. I appreciate the eloquent writings of the days of yore as well and the beautiful penmanship. Thank you so much for the poem reading!! God bless!! :D

Enjoyed your video. I love books too. I have been purchasing the good classics which are mostly vintage for my grand children for many years, building libraries for them.
We were able to send them to a Christian school for elementary years. It became too costly and so e spent a few years homeschooling.
We spent many evenings reading together out loud rather than watching tv. They loved it.
I just picked up a physician desk reference to medicine for people over 50 written in 1969. 90% of it is still applicable to my life. Paid $0.99 for an $80.00 book 📚 at the Salvation Army Store!!!

Two 8 ft. Bookcases here dedicated to both old classics and a few new. Love them all! Have you seen the Old Mother Westwinds series by Thornton Burgess? My daughter loved them. Bought them when a school was selling their old books.

We have something in common, I too love old books! And your right, kids today are being dumbed down! My oldest is a late 1800 cookbook. Some of the ingredients I can't figure out what they are. But I feel the spirit of the original owner of it. It is something to think about when holding a book that someone held so long ago! Blessings!

We have my father in law's first grade reader. He was born in 1929. The book was published in 1932. Also, my grandmother, born in 1887 was a school teacher. She knew we were being dumbed down. She told my mother as such when I was in grade school. She died when I was 9.
We have a bunch of old books. The Lake English Classics- Shakespere's The Merchant of Venice Copyright 1900. Several others of his. A collection of his Comedies. We only have two volumes though. Book one and two published in 1944. We have another of his fathers high school books...Dickens The Tale of Two Cities published in 1911. There are too many to mention. One interesting one is The Life of Paul by Benjamin Willard Robinson, Ph.D. copyright 1918 - Fourteenth Impression 1949. Some neither of us can remember which parents they came from. I wish I had old reference books or history books. The "stories" are a changing as you know. Most any book is a treasure. How did we get away from allowing it to be taken from our hands?

I love books Heidi. I have schoolbooks of relatives from 1880’s ( I think) that still have work papers in them. I have my Great Grandmother’s home medical book published around 1900. My prized possession is my Great great Grandfather’s obituary which he wrote. It tells his life story from running away from home at 12 to be a cabin boy to his time as Captain of a blockade runner during the civil war. I have several shelves of one of my 5 bookcases filled with older books.lol It sounds like you have some nice books also.
That medical book would really be a wonderful resource and what a blessing you have that obituary, that would be quite the amazing read!
Heidi, When I homeschooled almost 20 years ago I started with a curriculum called Rod and Staff, they are faith based and their readers all included God and creation and the Word of God. I LOVED them. Might be something you are interested in looking into.
I have heard of them, maybe I will check it out. Mostly looking for second hand things right now as I still have most of the school books I used for my two boys :)
I didn’t want you to stop reading. It was a beautiful poem. It even spoke about “covering the land” after plowing as so many nowadays are just understanding! How much better off would we all really be had we not fallen into the trap of “new is better?” It’s heartbreaking really. So much has been lost. I’m so grateful we have folks like you trying to remind us that in a lot ways, the old ways were truly better! Just look at gardening as an example...how much better off would we all be if someone hadn’t gotten too lazy to figure out natural pest/weed management and instead invented RoundUp????? So much we now have to try to fix because of that one disastrous invention. How many teen pregnancies could have been avoided had we not taken God out of our schools? Let alone how some of our churches have been “dumb downed.” Turned into “follow the preacher” instead of “follow God!” I’m ranting. Sorry. TFS Truly enjoyed this. I used to have 2 Danish book of agriculture.(print in 1800's..). how to book...(found in garbage.)... many moves since then.. and not sure where they are now..but they had loads of information .. and I couldn't even read them.. now I could translate with the help of the computer....but the illustrations were superb

My Noah Websters dictionary is from 1852, 1875 1924, i have many more as well. Medical book is from 1886 Hymnals 1908, 1888, 1939 It is wonderful that you like old books like me. I too am a lover of books I have hundreds of old cookbooks and have been collecting classics too also homesteading type books for many years no one ever was interested in them and they were easy to find now it is a little harder
I wonder if they are harder to find because more people are grabbing them up with the resurgence of wanting to learn traditional ways or if they are getting tossed - I sure hope it is the former and not the latter!

I even think wrist-length sleeves and ankle-length "pants" would be good and protect the skin from sunburns and from having to use sunscreen. We do something you would be interested in. The local historical society owns a schoolhouse built in 1852. Each summer my husband and I get to open the school house and show kids what school was like back then. We do a 3-day session and repeat it 4 times. This summer we are teaching kids a little bit about the writers of the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution. I think we will have to read a bit of Song of the Sower to our kids. My husband is a woodworker and will cut parts for the kids to assemble a wood project. This summer it will be a "writing desk" similar to what Thomas Jefferson would have used. This is not really a desk but a box, perhaps 2 inches tall and 10 x 12 inches across, and hinged for storage of paper and quill. We have a friend who raises birds. She will give us feathers which we will make into quills for the kids.

oh how i miss reading, just not the same when one has to listen to a book,,i still buy old/vintage books when i have help to do so,, not very many people take the time to take me to sales any more,,mom used to do that but she passed in feb. so i,m alone now,, thank you for the great videos,,real pleasant to listen to like im right in the same room thank you again

I had never thought of removing the smell but I tend to love that musty smell of old books, haha :D Seems to me that pulling them out on a nice day and leaving them open in the sun may help though.
Outside on a dry morning. Ruffle through pages every so often to get air in them. Not too much sun; these old books are somewhat fragile, and the colors will fade and bindings deteriorate more . Best done under a tree, or under a covered patio.
I was thinking the same on the sun that too much would fade them. Great advice!
Flyover Pilgrim, yes I have done that, but as you said was afraid to leave them exposed to the sun for long. One thing I have done is tear small pieces of fabric softener sheets off & placed them between the pages.

Another great author is G. A. Henty, they've been republished many times over the years. Think he died 1902, the old series of books are treasured & now republished again
My favorite books: author Harry Combs (that is his name, he's gone now) series: Brules, The Scout and the last in this series The Legend of the Painted Horse. Maybe Mr Rain would love to read this series. I collect Arthur Rackham.
Great video! 2 recommendations...although not really childrens books...first...white goats and black bees by donald grant original date 1911 and the 2nd i just finished and heidi i think you would truly love it is titled a very small farm by william winchester. Hands down best book i have read this year.

I LOVE Grace's books. I think I have 15+ old paperbacks (1965-1975) around the house someplace. Besides romance it's a shows a part of human history. I use to have a Encyclopedia set from the late 1800's. I had to move around a lot in 5 years and got rid of it. I've been sorry I did that for the last 30 years. it was a combination of facts and folklore.

I love old books too, but I just pitched an older children's bible. It was mine when I was young. Just recently went to read some from it to my granddaughter and found it was way watered down and not true to what I understand now. So yeah more power to king James or my German Elberfelder.

I do work from home full-time.
This can be tough depending on how hard a stance on public school your husband is taking. I would recommend showing him statistics of all kinds. Most of the time when it is the husband who is having a hard time with it, it is because they are afraid their kids will turn out "weird". But what I see is kids who public school end up being just another cookie cutter person who is just like everyone else - now THAT is what is weird when we are all designed to be different. Also keep in mind how much safer kids are in their own homes than in the public school let alone the fact the education is far superior than what they can receive in the modern school system. I taught Ballet for 27 years straight in this same town and watched how with each year it seemed that kids became dumber in the sense they had less and less natural creativity and the ability to understand basic movements was severely diminished. What I once was able to teach to kids ages 6-8 eventually was too hard for many kids in the 9-12 age bracket. I was shocked the day when it hit me that kids age 6-8 could not even understand the difference between between moving forward and moving backwards. I could not believe I had to start breaking this very concept down when at one time I did not even need to do this for the 3-5 year olds!
I had one of the original (very very old) children's books, "Black Beauty". Unfortunately, our trailer burned down in 2002 and it was lost. What a shame.

There's numerous ways, here's my baking soda method. I sprinkle BakingSoda on the bottom of a plastic bag then stand the hard or soft cover book (on another BS free plastic piece) so pages are open and tie it shut, letting it sit for a day or more. Gel packs work also but I find them not as effective. They get an alternative treatment when I sit outside in the sun & read:)

Word meanings is something you always have to be careful with when looking in history. The word fagots is used often in middle ages, refering to a bundle of sticks. Shows how many trivial things we care about that will have no meaning years later.

Why are you so set on the King James Version of the Bible?There are Bibles written in modern English which makes it more easily understood.
Because after years of looking into it, the King James is clearly the most accurate and unadulterated version of the Bible. It is not that hard to understand when people take time to just read and get used to the literal and accurate language. The modern versions are not only dumbed down but side by side comparisons prove that there are many verses that have been removed and many that have literally been changed so much to make the meaning of them opposite of what they originally were. I believe this is the reason there is so much confusion over what the Bible really says. Since switching to KJV only, the word of God has become far more clear to me than every before. Yes, I still stumble over some of the language but when one reads it in context or simply looks up the old English words we no longer use, the meaning becomes clear. This in turn means being able to understand not just more of what the Bible says but also being able to better read and understand other older books written in a similar and more advanced language than what is common to today's English
Another great tool to use if a KJV word stumps you is a good, old, Webster's dictionary. Not a modern edition.
