    I have been using Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II for years shooting professionally, as well as for my personal photography projects. I believe E-M1 Mark II is currently the best value mirrorless camera out there, offering amazing image quality, fast and reliable AF performance, powerful image stabilization, rugged body build with weather-sealing, and tonnes of other advanced imaging features (Pro Capture, 50MP high res shot, live composite). It may not be the latest and greatest from Olympus, but it still packs a lot of punch, and with the lowered asking price now, it is so easy to recommend E-M1 Mark II to anyone. You cannot go wrong with this choice.

    For those of you who are asking about the new E-P7 and 8-25mm lens, I don't have any information and was not informed about their release.
    Also, this video was filmed before the total lockdown in Malaysia. Those of you in Malaysia please don't roam around the streets or show yourself out in the open. The police will catch you, send you to prison, fine you RM10000 (USD2500) or both.

      Thanks for the review / overview. I just bought one used here in the USA (arriving today, according to the US Postal Service). I see that in the USA they are discounted right now, so buying one new isn't that much more expensive than the used one I bought. Be well, and I can tell you that when Malaysia (and all the other countries) are able to get enough people vaccinated, it really will be better. Keep reminding friends and families that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

    Bought a used M1mk2 one year ago for a ridiculous price. Paired it with a 12-40 PRO and did some event / wedding. Image quality is superb and the stabilization is crazy. With this kind of gear you don't need to upgrade to be a better photographer, you just need to know how to shoot.

    I can't agree more with you. The E-M1 MII is still a beast, compared to the other cameras on the market.
    I work in a camera store in the Netherlands, and people buy the newest Sony, Nikon and Canon cameras and then tell me the reason why they switched to that specific camera. Most of the time I only laugh and think to myself, "That feature, I had that in 2016 on my MII".

    Well, I moved from the EM 5 Mk II to the EM 1 Mk II, even when the EM 1 Mk III was out. I got a great deal, and I was and still am 100% happy with this fantastic tool. When I am not satisfied with my photos, I am always the one to « blame », never my camera. Like you said, Robin, you can take it with you whatever the weather,, the battery life is incredible, you can shoot at any moment of the day, and the feeling in your hand is that you invited your best friend to take a walk. I do not need more sophisticated features for what I like to shoot. Frankly, with this kind of tool, all you need is monitoring the lens market.

    A video I needed to see today! My venerable pocket street photography camera, the E-PL8, died yesterday. I also have an E-M1 Mark II that I use mostly for bird photography and portraits, and until I save up for another small street camera it's going to be my one-and-only everything camera. But I'm not worried in the least -- it can do anything, and as you say it's SO comfortable to carry around!

    @scd6969 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Robin, I love your channel. Your insights and experience really help me with my decisions on choosing a camera. I am not limited by budget on what camera I can afford, so I really can buy any camera on the market without "breaking the bank". My current setup is 15 years old, pre-MFT era--an E-3. Prior to that, my first DSLR was an E-300, the 2nd camera to use the Four Thirds system. I loved it and thus upgraded to the E-3 flagship, a huge purchase for a college student. I have been shooting with it since and never felt the need to upgrade as I rarely ever print my work, and 10MP is plenty to enjoy on the screen. Photography has always been about the photo, not the equipment. So the E-3 has never failed me in that regard. Anyway I have been long overdue for an upgrade, and have lost confidence with OM System ever since I saw what they did for their first camera the OM-5, which was more or less an incremental iteration to the E-M5 Mark III, and not even enough that would deserve a Mark IV moniker. So really, I see it is just a rebranding effort for OM System. Anyway I digress. I have pondered moving to a new system given to all the amazing developments over the years since my E-3. Sony is the market leader, and I was very close to buying an Alpha 7 IV. But watching your videos over and over, I am convinced MFT is the right choice for me. I am kind of done with lugging around heavy glass, which I have a pretty solid collection of Olympus D.Zuiko Four Thirds lenses. I recently picked up a used Panasonic GX-85 and a couple of MFT lenses (Oly 17mm F1.8, Lumix G 14mm f2.5, and Lumix 20mm f1.7). I was blown away by how light they are and the GX-85 is a great little camera for every day carry. But the ergonomics are terrible, and I can't take it seriously as my main camera. Having to fiddle with tiny buttons and confusing touch screen menus really take the joy away from shooting. Anyway after seeing how amazingly light MFT lenses are, and the best-in-class handling of the E-M1, I have decided to pick up an OM-1I, after considerable reflection. One big benefit is that I don't need to abandon my collection of glass. I tried using them on my Lumix but the performance was less than steller (to put it lightly). I learned that the lenses would work well on OM-D cameras that has PDAF, more specifically, the E-M1 Mark III can make full use of my expensive ED, SHD and SWD lenses. It will be a while before I rebuild my collection of glass, so those lenses will indeed come in handy.
    Anyway, Thank you for setting me back in the right direction after watching Jimmy Chang's video which you referred to in your video. He really reminded me what was most important in choosing gear.

    Nice video clip Robin. Although I now have the EM1 mark iii I also have my mark ii and take both out with me. Tend to use 40-150mm and 60mm macro with this camera. I can even do handheld focus bracketing / stacking with this camera !! A few facilities missing that I like on the mark iii - particularly the ISO button - but it is still a super camera and easy to handle. Although the EM1X is a great camera I have found that for me the EM1 mark ii and iii are excellent, easy manoeuvrability and the low weight is fantastic particularly when hand holding with 150-400mm pro lens !

    @gregm6894 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Robin, you are right on target with this video. Given the prices, especially for a clean used E-M1 Mkll, it is one of the best professional level cameras to be found. I recently upgraded to the E-M1X, which I absolutely love. I still have my E-M1 Mkll and two E-M1 Mkl's and will probably sell the Mkll and one of the Mkl's -- only because I still have a few accessories that use the power port under the hot shoe. I have basically retired from professional work and now am mostly shooting nature/wildlife/birds and some macro.
    One thing I will say about the M1X that has been a real improvement (aside from improved bird tracking) and that is the improvement in image stabilization. Prior to this camera I really needed to use a tripod when shooting with my Oly 75-300mm at full zoom. I now can shoot without a tripod and get very sharp images. I do have the 100-400mm, but go with the 75-300mm when I want to travel light.

    I totally agree. Bought mine new with the 12-40 beginning of December 2020. It immediately gave me the same feeling as my trusted E-1 with the 14-54 back in 2003. It takes quite a while to get one's head around the almost endless configuration possibilities, but once you have, it does whatever you want it to do. It's one of these cameras you want to pick up all the time, if only just for holding it, and that's the hallmark of a great camera. Thank you for keeping us inspired!

Besides E-1, I already had E-M10 and E-M10 Mk II (plus OM-1n, and OM-4). Now I have the legendary digital original and two of the best Mk II:s, E-M10 II and E-M1 II. I love them all, although E-M1 II now is my favourite, with E-M10 II as a fully sufficient alternative when packing really light (especially with the 14-42 EZ and the for its price surprisingly good 40-150 4-5.6).

I love the mki but the mkii is so much more responsive. Focusing is way, way better, especially with moving subjects and the blazing fast shooting modes are mind-blowing. Ergonomics are way better, just placing the 1-2 switch to the left so you can't knock it out of whack with your thumb, the better grip, the little tweaks so everything is just better in reach is a real treat. I'm absolutely smitten by this camera so wholeheartedly concur with you!

    Thank you so much for this video, Robin! I bought this camera exactly today for 999 € (1217 $) together with the 12-45 f4 kit lens - instead of 1899 € (2313 $), which was possible because of a company-internal discount (a so-called "corporate benefit"). I'm very happy with this decision as I was looking quite a while for a reasonable upgrade to my E-M10 Mk. II. And now your video - also from today - confirms me even more in my decision. Best regards from Germany to Malaysia... :)

    I sold my em1 mark ii for an em1x. Simply because the price drop on the em1x was so good recently. But honestly, I probably didn’t need both but I probably should have kept both. The em1 mark ii is such a good value. You can find them used for $600-$700 which is crazy for how great this camera is with firmware updates! If I ever need a second camera, I would happily go back to my em1 mii. Love seeing you, Robin!

    I just picked up An E-M1 mk2 yesterday for £619 brand new (Birthday present to myself). Absolute steal at that price. Might have been superceeded, but for a hobbiest photographer like myself, this will stay with me for a very long time. I bought one a while ago for a very good price (refurbished, less then 1000 clicks, for around €800, as good as new for all pratical purposes), as a very nice step up from my E-M10 III. Been using it a lot ever since, and haven't regretted the decision for one bit, for pretty much the exact reasons you pointed out. I love the ergonomics of the slightly larger body and grip. Fits my (fairly large) hands just that bit better then the smaller E-M10 body. In turn a more firmer/sturdier grip to hold the camera allows for these so-called 'dangerously slow' shutter speeds.

    • @robinwong

    Thank you for this video and your activity! I agree with your viewpoint that the E-M1 Mk.II is the best value MFT body to be available at the moment. I myself own the E-M1 Mk.II and the E-M1X (as I love bird photography and could not resist the 1900€ offer). --- The E-M1 Mk.II still is my favourite body as it is small and lightweight even with the battery grip attached (which actually is nearly always the case). The only and single argument for the E-M1Mk.III WOULD be the 6 hours Live Comp feature for Star Trails - but I can resist the temptation. All other features and characteristics are not indispensable in my regard. Soon another professional camera body will be introduced from OMDS that might be a big step forward, but for so long we can go on enjoying the big fun with the Mark II!

In fact, I like the camera so much, I bought three specifically for environmental and conservation photography and shooting video. Slowly I will increase the glass when the opportunity presents itself. So far it has not failed me. Still learning the feature set on this beast, even though I basically shoot RAW and on manual to keep things simple. But it's always nice to know that if you need something extra, you can fine tune it. Thanks for all your fine content.

    Everything you say about the Mk2 is quite true. My only gripe, being a gear head sort of guy, is that whenever I consider upgrading to a Mk3 or EM1X (not to mention the almost irresistible temptation to go into a different brand), I must admit that the Oly EM1 Mk2s I have are doing way too good a job to be replaced. So I just say, No to all of the temptations

Within 6 months of use I bought a second E-M1X as a back up camera as it was simply the best camera I've ever used for my specific needs. The handling, comfort and ergonomics are simply superb. If you have a chance to try out an E-M1X you will likely enjoy the camera. I was warned about the E-M1X by an associate who owns one... he told me not to borrow or rent one unless I was prepared to get hooked on that body and buy one. He was right!!! Tom
