The Rise and Fall of V-Cube | Part 2

  • V-Cube had just released the V-Cube 5, 6, and 7, and everyone was happy. So if the cubes were good, why did they collapse so quickly?
    Thanks again to Thom "Kirjava" Barlow for proofreading the script.

    Ah man, I remember the patent infringement being a big deal. I was getting into speedcubing and had just bought a regular Dayan Guhong and lubix lube, and this issue became a huge discussion within the community (I joined speedsolving forums around this time, iirc). I was not happy that the cubing community was arguing so much or in danger of getting divided, as a previous online community that I was a part of (sim racing) had been divided from a lawsuit some years before. I'm glad it has all passed.

      True. They are suing thecubicle.us for tricking people that they sell "knockoffs" that has the same level quality as a Rubik's brand. I laughed so hard when I first knew about it.

    Ah, I remember all of those old V-cube vids from back in the day. I started cubing in 2011 and I remember thinking that V-cube and Rubik's were the only brands for a little while.

  • @ThomasBomb45
    @ThomasBomb45 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I got into cubing right before the controversy, I think. V cubes were all the rage (except the 6x6's clicking mechanism, which was made passable by memyselfandpi's mod). I got v cubes 2,5,6, and 7 and... a dayan guhong. Right before the patent stuff got filed. What a crazy time to be in the twistypuzzles forums!

    Oh man, this is sad. I just dug up my old v cube 5, 6 and 7. 7 was great and the 5 was one of the best 5x5's I'd ever used. I figured they were up to some ridiculous number by now but nope.

  • @malikon6953
    @malikon6953 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They're pretty underrated these days. I have V-Cube 2x2 through 9x9 and while they aren't "speedcubes" they are very well made solid puzzles. Much better than anything Rubiks puts out in terms of quality. And you have to respect that they were the first to figure out how to make 'big cubes'.

    "actually cube4you still exists but they make a great example of a dead cube store. I mean, who actually buys from them anymore? The latest cube they have in stock is the mefferts holey megaminx, and that was added in 2014. Seriously. Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled lesson. "

  • @explosionmonty
    @explosionmonty 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    its so sad, I can remember the time, when they released their first cubes. I got hyped and bought 6x6 and 7x7. It felt so amazing because it was something what didn't exist before. I was also hyped for the following products.. even bigger cubes? wow. But then, only bad business decisions. I didn't need a 3x3, weird color schemes, flags etc. But look now over 10 years later there are the cubesI I have ever dreamed of for so long. Moyu 12x12 stickerless and cubic (not that meh pillowed)... I thought v-cube will deliver but they never did..

  • @moosesandmeese969
    @moosesandmeese969 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    V-cube also never adapted with the times, which is ultimately why people stopped buying them altogether. Shengshou and Moyu started making their own big cubes that were undeniably better than the v-cubes which were complete shit especially out of the box compared to these new ones. They never updated the v-cube 6 design which still had the horrible clicking mechanism, and you always had to mod it yourself. That's despite these new cubes offering what was essentially a pre-modded v-cube that was better than you could ever do yourself. The v-cube 5 still took months to even break in to be at least comparable to new 5x5s. Big cubes today almost feel like turning a 3x3 yet v-cube is still using their 12 year old designs

    Oh boy it's been a while. In my opinion, V-Cube is probably doing fine. They made a smart decision by deciding to go for the normal retail market rather than the speedcubing market in the end. Speedcubing requires constant innovation, and given how long it took them to release each of their cubes, they didn't seem up to that task. The only decent off-the-shelf cubes before V-Cubes came out were actually Rubik's brand, while everything else was really cheap and awful garbage. Now V-Cube competes with them directly rather than the ultra-niche speedcube market.

    The reason why I don't buy vcubes is that they're expensive. I never had a problem with the whole patent infringement thing, but then I wasn't really much of a speedcuber, but more of an enthusiast. I have a few vcubes and more chinese brand speedcube.

    • @PkGam
      @PkGam 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They did it to more than just that one through the years which has a way of making them look like a patent troll. That of course also has a way of hindering progress because stuff that performs better may get attacked while V-cubes themselves stay virtually stagnant in performance because they don't seem to care much about improving their own products. As a result, people aren't happy about V-cubes being priced higher than most others being made yet performing among the worst.
      Also like CrazyBadCuber pointed out, ironically instead of using their own design for their 3x3, they used another company's design (The Dayan Guhong). But doing more digging, people also found that V-cube's design likely wasn't even their own idea to begin with as it is strikingly similar to Eastsheen's (compare their 4x4s), which was publicly patented before Verdes claimed to have thought up the conical design all himself. So those points certainly didn't help V-cube's credibility and public image on their supposed strict stance regarding what they define as "knockoffs" either.
