Mr Immler, I used this technique on a camping trip and found it to be the by far the easiest and most effective way to use a fire starter. Thank you so much for your efforts.
And for putting out dangerous fires, always remember to carry your fireproof Survival-Thumb !! Felix always carries 2 around, in case one gets burned or destroyed while working.
Just to let you know that your viewers also re-watch your older videos. I just watched this again to re-fresh this skill. I thought you also showed how to use another SAK tool than the saw ( the reamer maybe?) for use with firesteel. Maybe that was a different video or I was mistaken. Have a great day.
Two things I just learned. A more efficient and effective use of the fire steel, and a better alternative to replace the missing toothpick from my Swiss Army knife. Thank you
@@FelixImmler Felix, thanks as always for your wonderful videos! I think that discussing your "dream" SAK would make a great video. I'm imagining that you could discuss the combination of tools that you would like as well as new/custom tools that you would like to see added (i.e. spoon carving gouge). Once you have posted your video we could all put the pressure on Victorinox. I promise that I would by TWO Felix Immler Specials!
Just imagine a pocket knife that wasn't made side ways with 50 tools that you could fit in your pocket. Oh yeah! They make small ones and leave the intelligent dessigns to the americans lol Just to be clear though most multi-tools suck ass regardless of brand.
@@edwardfletcher7790 I want to like the Wave. But in the end, it sucks due to the lack of a one hand plier usage and the inset tools are a b!tch to open. I've tested 6 units and it was the same across a couple years. I settled on the SideKick. Spring action pliers, no open problems even if it lost the spring function. Compact and half the price almost. Plus all the other tools were easy to open and the blades have a lock unlike Swiss small multi's. The only other leatherman I have is a Squirt 4 for ferro rods. I know....destroy it for THAT? lol But, that is really easy to pocket over a scrap that kinda jabs you or catches on a bit of fabric. Though a tiny swiss can do a scraper job fine as well so maybe I'll pick up a tiny one.
I absolutely love videos like these where I learn something useful in an entertaining way. I also like the presentation of the Firefly; I upgraded all my Victorinox knives by replacing the tooth-picks with Firefly ferro-rods, as it is easier to improvise a toothpick in the woods with your knife that improvising a combustion device!
You can buy some new scales that hold pen, and make modification to them to open up a hiden compartment, after doing this, you can then keep the tooth picks, the Firefly ferro rods, tweezers and even have a pen :)
I use cotton balls covered in petrolium jelly, vasaline, and tried this technique....geez, why didn’t i ever think of this before! Even using a ferro striker, it worked perfectly! Thanks
It hurts my head how simply obvious and obviously simple that technique is. I've been wasting ferro rods for far too long... No longer will such foolery be had! So efficient. So effective. Thank you.
Just to let you know that your viewer re-watch your videos. I just watched this one again as I somehow thought you also show how to use a different tool than the saw to start a fire with a fire steel. Maybe a different video or I was mistaken. But I do re- watch various videos every now and then just to re-fresh my mind on those skills. 👍👍👍👍
If you use the Firefly, make sure you place your finger toward the tip as Felix said. But ALSO make sure that you are using the thin side as it is stronger in this position and less likely to break. I carry a full kit for survival on long hikes but this is a mini survival kit in your pocket. The Firefly company also make a great Fire Tender that screws into the corkscrew. The only downside is they are a bit costly. I hope this extra info. helps... The Old Marine, Semper Fi !!
Endlich Felixtag.
Swiss army knife is the best survival tool ever, and this technique is the best also because your hands can break the breeze on windy occasions! Good video!!
I think the thumb-on-knife technique you showed works best with harder ferro rods. Most common, cheaper rods are too soft. It’s the difference between a slow, hard-pressure, short stroke (hard rods) and a fast, light-pressure, long stroke (soft rods). I didn’t explain that well, but if you dig around Far North Bushcraft and Survival channel, Lonnie explains it.
Millions of people have been using fire steel for a long time and think they know everything about it, then a nice Swiss guy comes along and thinks about how to make it better and develops the optimal solution.
I have used this way of using my Ferro Rod with my S.A.K. & my fixed blade knife, 100% better technique. Especially when using S.A.K. Saw so it doesn't close up accidentally!!! 👍
Hallo Felix, wieder ein tolles Video. Jedes mal erstaunst du mich aufs Neue. Sehr cool😊. Danke fürs Zeigen. Wünsche dir schöne Feiertage. Alles Liebe und Gute Joe
Thank you for the great demonstrations! Also, I would be interested to hear your thoughts on that Victorinox fixed blade sometime. I like the looks of that knife, but would be curious to hear how it actually performs. Have a great weekend, Felix!
I'll order some Firefly fire starters next time I go to the US, that's a very important feature in a SAK. I'll make sure I use the Immler technique too. It's indeed better than the other methods.
I am glad that you showed us this technique for using the firesteel to get a fire going as it is easier and you only have to use it once to get a fire started. That is a much better use of the firesteel regardless of it's length and I will remember it and use that the next time I want to start a fire.
Thanks, this is a good new way to use a small fire stick. I happen to use a thicker stick that really shoots a ton of sparks. It might be bigger but I think its worth it to get alot more sparks. Its always nice to start a fire on the first scratch...
So oft hab ich den Feuerstahl nicht im Einsatz, aber diese Technik finde ich super und werde ich sicherlich üben! Danke Felix für's Zeigen! LG aus Oberösterreich, Willi
