Victorinox claims: 100 fires with just one FireAnt. Is that possible? Let's test it!!

- Victorinox launched the FireAnt fire steel set a few weeks ago. In this video I test the performance with different types of tinder. According to the product description, it should be possible to start 100 fires with this micro fire steel. I want to test that!

I've been using the firefly one that replaces the toothpick. It works like a charm.
And because it is longer you get a bigger spark.
If you anyway need to bring fresh tinder from home u can also bring a bigger firesteel with you...
I mean... The Firesteel doesent work with natural materials as he shows.
So why u need it? its so expensive and u need to cary youre own tinder? is it worth it?
A bigger light my fire is less expensive than that.
@@lyronixone4567 he shows it catching natural tinder like fatwood though, and admits if he made the birch finer it might work. Finer material will always catch easier. This product would be a way to have an extra fire starter without taking up extra space in your kit. I like having a ferro rod on me in case my lighter doesn’t work for whatever reason, and this would let me keep it with an edc knife in my pocket without taking up any extra space. A bigger ferro rod will always be more effective than a smaller one, I myself keep a 1/2x5 inch ferro rod in my bag, but that doesn’t mean this is a bad idea to have with how convenient it is to carry.
You know what lights VERY easily, and you should have in your kit or pocket anyways? Gel hand sanitizer. Mostly made of ethyl alcohol, not only does it light from a single spark, it burns for several dozens of seconds, and is wind resistant, giving you plenty of time to build up a fire. It burns with a blue flame, very much like the Steno buffet food warmers. Give it a try today!

I've been teaching some 9 year old Cub Scouts about both knives and building fires. I'm going to have them try using my FireAnt and Firfly to build the fire at our campout this weekend.

Edward Fletcher, I’ve not tried the corkscrew insert, but I do know that the toothpick version doesn’t fit in the RangerGrip series toothpick. Found this out the hard way. I have a snapped one still lodged into mine.
One tinder everyone literally has on them are the clothes your wearing. Fibers from any cotton clothes, like jeans, can be shaved off with your blade giving you a nice little pile of lint.
Gel hand sanitizer. Seriously, give it a try. A squirt will light from a single spark, burns with a blue flame, lasts for several dozens of seconds, and is wind resistant. Plus, you will have clean hands. Give it a try!
One thing to be careful of when burning hand sanitizer is that the blue flame can be very difficult to see.

This was originally put out by a company called Tortoise Gear. The first micro fire steel replaces the toothpick on your knife and then they made these micro steel inserts for the SAK corkscrew. Neat that Victorinox picked up on it. The Tortoise gear ones also have glow in the dark plastic which is neat. No, I wouldn't use these as a primary fire source, but as a back-up, they are hard to beat. Thanks again Felix!
Brendan, I looked at these when I found out about them, but the cost of getting them to the UK made them unviable. I opted for a 4.5mm ferrocium rod in my Swiss champ case. I assume you would recommend them?
Felix didn't mention it, but these glow in the dark too.
@@boola69 I do but there is a 'technique' to striking them. You strike along the top 'thin' edge, not the broad 'flat' edge. Also pull the blade (or striking surface) along the fire steel, don't pull the steel across the blade. But it does throw some sparks when you get it right.
@@brendanking7328 Yeah, I'd seen you used the narrow side on a review. I think I'll just stick to the ferrocerium rod as it takes up little space. BTW cotton balls soaked in Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) make amazing tinder, but you probably knew that.

Aw, I missed the usual “Hello You Tube”. Great video as usual. Looked at these, but they were only available from the States at the time and the shipping to the UK made it unviable.
I had the same problem getting them shipped from the US, but now that Victorinox has picked them up they are much easier to get.

Great video, as always. But, I can't imagine myself needing over 100 "emergency fires." So, why WOULDN'T I use this as my primary fire steel, especially when it is just a backup to my lighter?
27€ for 3 of those. Way to expensive to use them casually in my opinion. Just use a lighter or a normal fire rod as it's way more value for your money.
These are nice to have, but when will you ever be outside with your pocket knife, but no other way to start a fire? For half the price I might get them, as it is they are just a gimmick for me

Again, you hit one out of the park! An American baseball term for hitting a home run and clearing the bases for one to four runs or points. You should make a CD or thumb drive with bow to use each blade on the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, specific to that one style of knife, include a small pocket sized solar charged flash light and sell them in a set or kit. Include your whitting book! You are a genius and you know it! Bravo! Felix Immler, a true living treasure for all of Switzerland!

I've been using fire ants for a while, since the original crowd funding. Very happy with them. The huntsman is almost a complete survival kit with this. I see it as essential EDC.

I have the Fireant and Firefly. I’ve trie both and they seem to work well. I prefer the Firefly because I tend to use the mini screwdriver a good bit. They are expensive but well worth the cost in an emergency. Excellent kit and excellent video. Thanks again for making these videos.

My bushcraft journey started picnicking with my family. It was cold and damp and we couldn't start a fire. It has been an education, to say the least. Others use accelerants to start fires and don't think twice. We, however, pride ourselves on following the basics and letting the fire and fuel work for us.

I have been using the firefly (big brother of the fireant) for two years now - don't miss my toothpick much and have found that even without a saw blade (on my mechanic swiss army) that the punch and can opener spark it very well. lots of fun knowing I have lots and lots and lots of more fires to be started ATB
Great video and proves what a great product it is.
I have one on my SAK but this shows it's even better than I thought. I was cautious to use it except for emergencies but this shows just how many strikes one can get from a single little fire steel.

I say the mini-ferro rod works great as a backup ignition source. Could also use tinder combos- helix tinder with birch bark or any of the others that worked well. Glad to hear The Huntsman SAK is your go-to. It's been my go-to as well for 30 years.

Felix, you are awesome! I probably would not have justified buying these until I saw this video, but my mind is changed. My first Vic SAK was also a gift ~40 years ago (but it was the Champion).
Great video as always, good to see this being put to the test. As a little fire steel you only use in an emergency and still being able to make over 100 fires makes it a very useful addition to the SAK.

From this video the most important take-away was your comment about having the appropriate tinder.
As preparation is the mantra for all who travel in nature and the outdoors, it is clear that part of that is to pack several different sources of tinder material. Fortunately, it is not at all bulky, and one can easily pack enough for hundreds of fires and scarcely notice the weight or bulk of that tinder. As was pointed out even fine birch bark shavings are not always easy to ignite.

Note: If one carries with you in your pack a humble domestic candle, it will make a formidable team with the fire ant! The fire ant gives the initial small flame and once lit, the candle provides the strong sustainable flame to light the fire in almost any conditions.
This video has conclusively exploded some long standing myths and assumptions about starting fires!

I just lucked into a procedure that makes Firefly becoming my most favorite thing! I got a big SAK Ranger Grip 58 Hunter. Then got large Firefly which needed end tapering to fit into SAK. I had used 6 cm. wide 120 grit sanding belt just laying around. I found rubbing FF on piece of belt very entertaining! Dust would accumulate on the belt. When there was enough dust it would erupt into a pyrotechnic display on the belt. It took a relatively long time to grind the square FF to a pointy toothpick profile. I guesstimate that there was enough large flashes to start over 100 fires in just the 2 cm tapering operation. If I carry a 6 cm. x 10 cm. patch of belt I could start an amazing number of fires; + other uses.

Thank you Felix! When I first saw the striker and tinder kit, I thought Victorinox was selling a worthless gimmick, but it does add functionality to the SAK. Great video!
I save the dryer lint from the filter in a bag I hand in the laundry room and use it for fires all the time. It's absolutely amazing for fire tinder, I also keep a large piece of flattened birchbark in my fire kit and a piece of fatwood.

I have been carrying and using the Tortoise Shell brand micro fire stick and helix tender for a year. Loved your review and you are correct as it is only an emergent starter, but man it is handy! One thing I experienced was that the helix tender would wear while in the pocket. So I found out that slipping a big straw over them works well to protect the tinder from the abrasive material in the pocket. I hope this helps other SAK carriers. Keep up the great work!!!!

With the birch bark, try scraping the inner side of the bark obtaining a little pile of the dust to throw a spark at.

Hallo Felix, ich habe einen etwas größeren Not-Firesteel in meinem EDC-Messer integriert. Man ist froh, wenn man so etwas dabei hat, wenn es mal eng ist und es ist auf alle Fälle besser, als gar nix. Wie du in deinem Video gezeigt hast, kommt es aber auch immer sehr auf den richtigen Zunder an.

For even more tinder in your fire making "kit", use some of that tinder paracord to make a lanyard for your knife.

The FireAnt was introduced by Tortoise Gear, and its considerably cheaper in USD from them (you only get 1 tinder per FireAnt instead of 2, however). They also produce the FireFly, which is a ferro rod that replaces the toothpick.

Felix this a great video course on starting a fire with a SAK. I purchased the “Toothpick” version of the fire steel, since I felt the smaller version would not be useful for inexperienced knife users.
My takeaway: Always bring a Tampon to the outdoors.
I thought you were just going to use the tinder that came with it. But in the spirit of "Project Farm" You do the 100 fires... "We're Gonna Test That. Nice Work!, loved all the tinder selections.

Felix, thanks for another great demonstration. I prefer the firefly to the fire ant because it’s longer and will light more fires. Also, the tinder that comes in the fire ant is good but too expensive considering you can easily get other tinder in the outdoors. I wonder why Victorinox is so far only offering the fire ant in its product line. Hopefully they purchase the Tortoise Gear company soon and introduce the firefly too. It’s an excellent addition to a SAK.
