The US policy on China is literally like this:
US: "We support a One China Policy"
Press: "Which China would be the One?"
US: "None of your business, next question."
I'm fairly sure the One China Policy explicity states that the PRC is the one China and the US directly refers to that when they speak on the issue. But igwym
@@xsanez_ According to who? The Nationalist Party of Taiwan that used to rule all of China and lost the civil war still exists, it's the Blue party in this video, the Kuomintang. They're the major opposition to the Green Party. They still support the One China Policy, they just support an interpretation where the PRC isn't the one.
@r.brandt2246 According to the US bruh it's written down in legal documentation, they signed the related agreement back when Russia was a common enemy and it hasn't changed since then you can look this all up. OP suggests US policy doesn't state which is the One China which is misinformation (I appreciate the joke tho but just in case)
@@xsanez_He said that because the U.S. switches the China it supports based on political convenience.
Currently their stance is they support the PRC as so long as they resolve the issue peacefully without war.

We went through growing pains. The first couple of elections were... rough. A dude crashed a truck into a district court building to demand a recount because the party he's in lost by a slim margin.
Fun fact: Even with all these transparencies, there were still people in Taiwan (and some influencers) that claim the election was rigged. (Which of course gets them clowned on and potentially getting sued.)
What? You clearly dont know anything about Taiwanese politics! There was a time that a politician brought in pigs blood to throw at the opposition party. If you listen to Taiwanese news they even mock the names of the parties (chinese like wordplay) For instance the people's progressive party was called the "no progress party" and "dangerous party" On Komica, the Taiwan equivalent to 4chan, it's a bloodbath. Having grown up in Taiwan, I'd have to say that praising their schooling is in rather poor taste.
There is quite a bit of humiliation and paddling going on, where teachers take the children in their classes and publicly strike them with wooden paddles, an experience which traumatized a few friends of mine due to the extreme pain and embarrassment it causes. The schools are not designed to encourage students to choose their own futures nearly as much as American schools are, which have elective classes, clubs, and such. Instead, the primary focus is to memorize and score well on exams so you can get a job at a factory, since Taiwan produces so many microchips. So, their clubs are almost always focused on academics, with serious social stigma against people in clubs that focus on recreational activities like dancing or video games. Cram schools are constantly packed, and parents sometimes wear traditional clothing to ensure luck during exam times.
All of this for workers who are far below Americans in innovative and leadership ability, who were only taught to follow directions if they did not attend university and branch out significantly in America. So yes, they do score well, but it is not half the story.
This is really interesting to hear, hopefully Atrioc sees this
American schools aren’t very good at preparing you either, from experience
@@matthewlithgow8578Depends on the state, as most things do.

Philippines has never had a good president post dictatorship. The country hasn't even had a capable president since GMA (which leaves an extremely salty taste in my mouth to say).
I want to say Cory did great, but she opened the floodgates of corruption after not being able to control the former Marcos cronies, who now run an economic oligopoly of the country. I want to say Noy did great, but he couldn't keep his promise of preventing corruption and lost the confidence of the poorer people. They all turned Duterte, and the rest is history.
Marcos is stupid as hell and wants us to go to war. He's also the most corrupt president we had since Estrada. I mean seriously I don't believe his bullshit and no one should. (Unlimited scandals in the government)
@@harperlee9982 Cory is definitely not good. She's not good at governing and there were many politicians at the time who had much better credentials (lawyers, doctors, and journalists) than a housewife.
PNoy though is great especially at the economy (economist, charismatic, and a great budget balancer creating big budget surpluses) like a Philippine Bill Clinton but corruption was scandal even though he was fighting it and it was actually the opposition which has always been in government even now except during his time that was extremely corrupt like Marcos.

I am a Latvian. The map of 1971 shows Latvia supporting Taiwan. At that time, we were a part of the USSR. I am sorry, but there is no way we would not officially support the communist government of China at the time.
To be fair… there was the Sino-Soviet split which meant greater tension and hostility between China and the USSR. I still doubt that they would have a diplomatic mission to Taiwan, but the CCP and USSR were on bad terms for the majority of the time they both existed
There was a period where the USSR was beefing with China and tried to ally with nearby countries to surround China. You can see this with Vietnam for example. I wouldn't be surprised if the USSR tried to ally with Taiwan despite being capitalist
Republic of china was one of a few countries to not recognise latvia's annexation by the soviets. That might have something to do with it, but of course that was decades earlier
@@the_sad_wallet1553The Sino-Soviet split was a deception according to KGB defector Anatoliy Golytsyn.
The Sino-Soviet border conflict occurred in 1969, tensions were running hot between USSR and China at that time. There was little trust and much hostility. They were not friends just because they both were run by centrally planned economies.

Here are a few things I've found that can be considered incorrect as a Taiwanese person:
0:19
The turquoise party is more commonly referred as white in color (13:25 Right top). There was even a whole period when people believed that blue and white would work together (藍白合, blue white together) to compete against green. Also, parties aren't official "Blue party" or "White party", but we indeed use colors, mainly blue and green to describe one's stance, just like left and right for the US.
1:18
I wouldn't say there is a "huge broad trust". Many have questioned whether green has made votes up, including a famous youtuber, causing quite a bit of mayhem. Luckily, the two losing parties both accept the election result, and many have discuss how improbable making up votes is.
4:22
百度百科 is a media source from China, they seem to paint these two as more extreme than they really are. The words 台獨 (Taiwan independence) always need to be used carefully. The majority of the Taiwan public want to keep the status quo (John Oliver explained in a video of his), so parties can't expect to win if they take a route too extreme in either direction. Green is indeed closer towards supporting Taiwan independence, but they mainly want to keep Taiwan's values if China threatens, whereas blue may go soft and agree with China so as so we keep peace. There are people who strongly urge true Taiwan independence, but these two are not.
Sorry for the long comment, have a good day :D
Does 藍白 not mean "blue white", as in turquoise? I have no idea about any of the politics, but I'm confused on what you mean.
@@MonocleMonke
If you literally add blue and white together, you get 淡藍(light blue).
I'll simplify the parties as the green party, the blue party, and the white party.
Polls said that the green party would win, so the blue party and the white party considered forming an alliance, where 侯友宜 and 柯文哲 (the two running for president) will work as a pair, with one of the two running for vice president and the other for president. But the parties disagreed on who should have which position, so they ended up running for president separately. If the alliance had happened, we very well could have gotten a different president (the two parties have a combined 60% of the votes). You can read the text at 13:20 for more info.
"White" voters are mostly young people. If there were only green and blue candidates, they would vote for green instead of blue. Many wouldn't vote for Ke if white and blue cooperated. Le would still likely win.
It's impossible to do poll-rigging nowadays. Some sore losers just can't accept the result. It's happens after every elections. It's interesting to know that the info started to appear before the election and right after the election spread through Tik-tok... No wonder...
Interesting video. I would like to add, however, that I heard one academic specializing in Taiwan say that the broad coalition government is pretty likely to result in slow changes. So the status quo in relation to China might remain, at least for some time, and the economical issues facing young people and others might take some time to change, if they do.
I know this to be true in my own country, Sweden, we have a lot of parties.
Basically the three parties have to get along and compromise, and that means any major change, that is required to fix the deep-rooted political or economic issues, will be less sharply oriented. Revolutionary ideas will be rejected, and sometimes you need those to actually change anything. But of course, there are advantages to compromises too, and as you say it is proof of a sound democracy.
It's definitely not a guaranteed solution, I just thought it was nice they got an actual voice. The system shifted to allow new parties a seat at the table. I think that's the only way democracy works sustainably otherwise people get more and more fed up feeling voiceless.
@@atrioc Yeah that makes sense.
@@atrioc It's so much better than in Canada with our ancient FPTP system. Here, the third party (NDP) that's supposed to be holding the government to account just gives warning after warning and says the equivalent of "next time we'll call you out", but they never do. They're getting compared to the "China's final warning" meme, and also compared to South Park because they're "Super Cereal" that they can effect change and hold the Liberals accountable. It's obvious that they're just taking advantage of the status quo. A political system that allows for real swing dynamics is so much better.
That is so funny that they can basically say:
"The country of Taiwan is not recognised"
and
"We hope that Taiwan is not attacked by China"

Most of the people wanted our Taiwan-China relationship to be "Maintain the status now" Which can translate to "Don't change anything"

Blue party is mostly China lickers and some few reunificationist
There was really no "middle option" in Taiwan for 50 years, well there were but our system made small party pretty much useless.
Ko wen-je's Cyan party is suddenly popular among young people. Cause their policies feels closest among people like me.
We want Taiwan to be neutral, return the good relationship with China, which has been very bad since Green came up. While keeping independence dignity. The most peaceful balance.
Sun Tzu Art of War said "Going to war should be the last option". By maintaining Neutral, restore a good relationship. We will get the best opportunity to talk with China. And try to solve the problem without a war.
Be realistic, if anything led to war, it is always us young men bad luck. I don't want to die for old liars that corrupt a lot in our Country (both Blue and Green are corrupt that's why people choose cyan).

I think it's a bit dishonest (by omission) to say that only the PRC engages in dollar diplomacy with small countries to get democratic recognition, as Taiwan does much the same thing, including with Nauru, but also with many other small nations in the Pacific, Africa, etc. It is often simply a bidding war between the two and only presenting one side (I believe) implies that Taiwan either doesn't do it, or that it isn't worth mentioning because they are justified when they do it; if that's your opinion, that's cool, but I think it would give viewers a more complete picture to present that information in full and give your opinion explicitly rather than by omission (especially because this information isn't exactly common knowledge).
This was really informative. Thank you.
As a Taiwanese, I have to say I'm rather cautious about the rise of Ko wen-je and his party. There have been several signs that indicates he might not be as justifiable as he claims. This includes the constant flip flops on many topics, endorsing controversial figures, and most importantly, indulging his supporters to spread misinformations about this election.
His entire personality is built on the dissatisfaction of KMT and DPP. I just don't believe this kind of populism is gonna last forever.
could be dpp propaganda though, they do control most of taiwans mainstream media after all
I'm not surprised he can be bad in many things, but this seems to be a quite universal 1 issue election
I do not agree tho
Hey Atrioc, I would love to see a marketing video explaining and walking through the “CDO” financial instruments that caused the 2007-2008 USA meltdown being rebranded into a global commercialized financial instrument. Now called the “Bespoke CDO” I would be interested in hearing your take on this and where you think it will lead us.

i think its really funny how everyone talks about how they are friends with Taiwan without officially recognizing them. thats like if North Korea randomly said they were good friends with Utah
Taiwan is a great country, I spent time on a trip there once
Except the government sucks, there is no investment, same old lousy infrastructure. Ah Democrappy

The only downside of living in Taiwan is the large number of scooters and the fact that I have 1ms ping to League of Legends servers making me want to play more.
its a province of republic of china, not a country.
Some correction no country on planet earth not even Taiwan claims Taiwan is a separate country only that it is the legitimate owner of all of China because changing that goalpost is tantamount to declaring independence
It could be argued that countries with ambassadors to Taiwan recognize it as a separate country, as the us doesn’t have an ambassador there.
ever considered buying some commas from walmart?
@@jamesmoore381 No, they view it as owning all of China, as said above, even if they send an ambassador.

I love seeing you delve into this venn-diagram of marketing and geopolitics
Still a dip-on-water observation, if you dive into Taiwanese society, you will find a completely different picture.
In fact, Taiwan is just a pawn of the United States to some extent. Whoever the United States prefers politically will be elected. The United States once openly intervened in the event through media and public opinion before the election, and none of the three candidates dared to say no.
And the nowadays DPP, in policy, has become more and more like their opponents, I mean the one on the other side of the strait. The year before last, they forcibly shut down a television station that raised opposition to them, and this year, they launched intense political censorship and questioning of Taiwanese tourists who had ever been to China.
So on the surface, from an American point of view, Taiwan's democracy seems to be working perfectly, but in fact, from a Taiwanese point of view, Taiwan's democracy is seriously regressive. But Of course, I agree, Ko is a game changer.
Thank you for giving me this information. Would've never gotten it otherwise! Very interesting!
0:45 worth noting for one the nationalist party (who were obviously far right) didnt just claim Taiwan. They claimed all of China. they never really surrendered their whole goal was to bide their time in Taiwan while anxiously currying favor with Western countries to hopefully get them to wage war against China so that they could “undo” the civil war and control mainland china.
For the weebs: they were kinda like the main antagonist who was banished by some hero 500 years ago and spent its time gathering strength before it came back for the final battle trope.
It’s also worth noting that in the 70s China tried to end the civil war once and for all but the US put their navy outside Taiwan more or less and threatened essentially a global war if China did that. So like in reality Taiwan was captured by a ferverent right wing militia that “lost” a civil war and Chinas never been able to officially take back control bc the US stepped in. The only analogy I could really make is if like January 6 people ran away to Hawaii and when the FBI tried to arrest them, the Chinese military stepped in.
I’m not sure I agree with that analogy - the Kuomintang (KMT) WERE the government of China before and during WW2
The January 6th people are about as far removed from being the seat of power as I am financially from Bill Gates
It’s more like if the Confederates had won the civil war and the Union fled to Hawai’i
Like Hasan said, it’s like if during the Civil War Texas had fully seceded while still being confederates, but had become an actual decent country over time despite the absolutely dogshit start.
Ignorant American here, I know you're absolutely correct about the far-right party that captured Taiwan and the US's interference, but it's hard not to feel they were justified given how brutal Mao's regime and the CCP's screwups ended up being.
@@TriforceWisdom64 I mean when you research what the KMT was doing during WW2 and before even, it is not hard to understand why most Chinese people sided with Mao back in the day. Plus Taiwan is pretty much a colonial state, or at least was back then, since a north Chinese elite came to dominate the original south Chinese and Austronesian aboriginals, imposing its culture on them the same way it is happening to the Uyghurs today.
Taiwanese American with a BA in Political Science here, just wanted to add something to all of this: this video is largely correct. The OTHER REASON why China wants to take Taiwan is because they see Taiwan as a constant challenge to its legitimacy. "Taiwan" was one of the founding nations of the League of Nations (now NATO) before its membership was revoked and given to China, up until the 1990's, the blue party (Kuomingtang) still drove the narrative that China belongs to Taiwan, and that one day Taiwan will take back the mainland.
What was League of nation is now UN, NATO is a military alliance of various North Atlantic nations setup specifically to counter soviet union... BA in political science?
and taiwan is not a founding member of league of nation, the league formed in 1920, which the "Island of Taiwan" at the time is a colony of Japan.
as for UN, ROC, a government representing China was 1 of the founder, not Taiwan, ROC remain to own that "legitimacy" even after losing most of mainland China, and in 70s that PRC officially replace ROC as the legitimate representation of China, i would doubt legitimacy is a reason for unification at all.
KMT drove the narrative that ROC is the legitimate government of China, and that Taiwan is a province under ROC's China, so today all the Taiwanese blablabla about military airplane flying here and there... just 50 years ago, ROC is the 1 keep flying military airplane over mainland China and claim they going to attack and take back mainland, they never claim Taiwan own China, because that would be very mentally ill, since in their very own governmental structure, Taiwan is a province.
i not even from mainland China nor raise under the red flag or whatso-ever, common sense and history books are available everywhere, it sure is funny trying so hard to push a single narrative.
Small correction on your history lesson:
Taiwan was a Chinese Province, however, the Empire of Japan managed to annex Taiwan after they defeated China in the Sino-Japanese War, and Taiwan was free as an independent nation after WW2.
It baffles me that people think singing your vote out loud during an election is somehowngood and democratic. Even more in a country as heavily monitored as Taiwan with a history of being founded by literal fascist military exiles.
Here in Argentina we used tonhave that and people realized it made corruption significantly easier because it lets those in power know exactly who you voted for and use that against you. Secret ballot exists to protect the integrity of the voters, letting them choose freely without outside pressure!
I think a little clarification is needed for you dear two-party state citizens: This third party does not always decide when the major parties are tied, instead a coalition is founded with a coalition agreement and the coalition agrees on a mix of its goals at the beginning of the legislative period and then votes always closed (although proposed laws etc. are usually discussed in the coalition before the vote)

While its very understandable to hear hype for a swing party/coalition from an american, as a brit, I am very cautious. In the uk and in europe in general, we have seen many coalition governments either become crippled by indecision, or renege on the promises of the smaller party.
